    Abstract: Als "Stellvertreter des Kaisers" standen die Gouverneure an der Spitze der kolonialen Verwaltungsapparate in Afrika und Ozeanien. Sie waren somit eine der wichtigsten Akteursgruppen bei der Konsolidierung der europäischen Herrschaft und der Realisierung imperialer Zielsetzungen. Jürgen Kilian nimmt 25 Gouverneure im Rahmen eines kollektivbiographischen Ansatzes in den Blick. Dabei untersucht er ihre während der Sozialisation im Kaiserreich erzeugten Denkweisen und Handlungsdispositionen, ihre Deutungsmuster angesichts der Landschaften und Menschen in den Kolonien sowie die Bandbreite gouvernementaler Herrschaftspraktiken im Kontext von kolonialer Staatlichkeit - ein einzigartiger Einblick in die Elite der deutschen Kolonialverwaltung

    Abstract: Der Kolonialismus prägte die deutsche Gesellschaft nachhaltig. So schlug er sich auch in der Erfahrungsbildung der Menschen zur NS-Zeit nieder. Im Fokus der Studie steht die Kriegserfahrung deutscher Soldaten in Nordafrika, wo die Wehrmacht über zwei Jahre Krieg in einem kolonialen Raum führte. Sabine Küntzel zeichnet anhand von soldatischen Briefen, Tagebüchern, Bildern und anderen Zeugnissen ein vielfältiges Bild von exotistischen und kolonial geprägten Wahrnehmungen des nordafrikanischen Raums und seiner Menschen, die lange Zeit keinen Platz in der Erinnerung hatten. Zugleich wird deutlich, wie rassistische Fremd- und Weltbilder das gewaltvolle Handeln der Soldaten anleiteten. Die Studie liefert damit einen wichtigen Beitrag zu einer Kulturgeschichte des deutschen Militärs an der Schnittstelle von europäischem Kolonialismus und Weltkrieg

    Abstract: Das Verhältnis von Christentum und Kolonialismus ist vielschichtig und häufig undurchsichtig. Ohiniko M. Toffa entwickelt eine neue epistemische Lesart der deutschen Missions- und Kolonialgeschichte in Togo. Anhand der Missionskonzeption des Missionsinspektors Franz Michael Zahn wirft er einen diskursanalytischen Blick auf die unterschiedlichen Ordnungen, Entscheidungen und persönlichen Überlegungen. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf den daraus abzuleitenden Werten und Normen. Diese Herangehensweise bringt eine neue Kolonialmoral hervor und liefert somit wichtige Anstöße für eine Dekolonialisierung des Wissens

Constant Kpao Sarè widmet sich afrikanischen Dingen wie zum Beispiel Tempeln, Pyramiden, Kopfschädeln oder Kaffee und deren (post-)kolonialem Potential in der Literatur.Dabei verfolgt er die Entwicklungen der gegenwärtigen deutschsprachigen Afrika-Literatur bis in den kritischen Realismus zurück und zeigt: Literarische Dinge entfalten, offensichtlich zügiger als die Mimikry des kolonisierten Menschen selbst, ein subversives Potential und operieren interkulturell. Es gelingt ihnen so, den Geltungsanspruch kolonialer Asymmetrien ästhetisch zu suspendieren und zu einem symbolischen "Verstehen" einzuladen

In analytischen Vignetten, die verschiedene Regionen sowie die nationale und internationale Dimension des Bürgerkrieges untersuchen, gibt Jan Pospisil einen Einblick in die südsudanesische Konfliktrealität.

    Abstract: Global Religious and Secular Dynamics' offers a global historical perspective that integrates European theories of modern secularization and competing theories of global religious revival as interrelated dynamics. In the first section Casanova examines the emergence of the modern religious/secular binary system of classification within a critical review of Émile Durkheim?s and Max Weber?s divergent theories of religion. The modern system of classification is contrasted with the pre-axial one, in which all reality was organized according to the binary sacred/profane, and with the post-axial one, which was organized according to the binary transcendent/immanent. The second and third sections contrast the internal European road of secularization without religious pluralization with the external colonial road of global intercultural and religious encounters, particularly in Asia, that led to the global system of religious pluralism. The final section examines the contemporary intertwinement of religious and secular dynamics through the globalization of the immanent frame and the expansion of global denominationalism

    Abstract: "The present volume is a result of an international symposium on the encounters between Jesuits and Protestants in Asia and the Americas, which was organized by Boston College's a href=http://www.bc.edu/content/bc/centers/iajs.html〉Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies at Boston College /a in June 2017.In Asia, Protestants encountered a mixed Jesuit legacy: in South Asia, they benefited from pioneering Jesuit ethnographers while contesting their conversions; in Japan, all Christian missionaries who returned after 1853 faced the equation of Japanese nationalism with anti-Jesuit persecution; and in China, Protestants scrambled to catch up to the cultural legacy bequeathed by the earlier Jesuit mission. In the Americas, Protestants presented Jesuits as enemies of liberal modernity, supporters of medieval absolutism yet master manipulators of modern self-fashioning and the printing press.     Abstract: In Islam and Gender in Colonial Northeast Africa, Silvia Bruzzi provides an account of Islamic movements and gender dynamics in the context of colonial rule in Northeast Africa. The thread that runs through the book is the life and times of Sittī ‘Alawiyya al-Mīrġanī (1892-1940), a representative of a well-established transnational Sufi order in the Red Sea region. Silvia Bruzzi gives us not only a social history of the colonial encounter in the Eritrean colony, but also a wider historical account of supra-regional dynamics across the Red Sea, the Ethiopian hinterland, and the Mediterranean region, using a wide range of fragmentary historical materials to make an important contribution towards filling the gap that currently exists in women's and gender history in Muslim societies.

    Abstract: In 'Cultural and Theological Reflections on the Japanese Quest for Divinity', John J. Keane offers an explanation of Japanese divinity ('kami') using sociology, anthropology, linguistics, literature and history. He presents an overview of how the Japanese have sought to love and serve their 'kami' - a quest that rivals the interest that the West gives to God. The principles of interreligious dialogue are applied to the meaning of kami and a plea is made for a dialogue that respectfully accepts differences between the cultures and the theologies of Eastern and Western thought. Important cultural themes are discussed as a part of this quest, such as the emperors of Japan and the Japanese Tea Ceremony. The work also challenges the understanding of 'kami' as highlighted by Akutagawa Ryunosuke and Endo Shusaku

    Abstract: Historically, entrepreneurs have always played a central role in the development of nation states. Aside from rentier states, which depend extensively on the availability of mineral resource rents, most economically prosperous nations in the world have strong, innovative and competitive business enterprises and entrepreneurs as the bedrock of their economic development and prosperity. It was arguably because of the above historical fact that the World Bank in 1989 declared that entrepreneurs will play a central role in transforming African economies.     Abstract: Sind antimuslimische Diskurse Ausdruck einer aktuellen Form des Rassismus? Anhand von Fallbeispielen - darunter auflagenstarke Buchpublikationen, Zeitungsartikel, Webseiten und Zuschriften an muslimische Verbände - geht Yasemin Shooman den antimuslimischen Narrativen und ihren Funktionen nach. Sie untersucht die artikulierten Selbst- und Fremdbilder ebenso wie die Rolle historischer Bezüge und arbeitet das Repertoire dominanter antimuslimischer Stereotype und Topoi heraus. Die empirische Analyse trägt auch zur Theoriebildung in dem relativ jungen Forschungsfeld bei und zeigt, dass eine Rassifizierung religiöser Zugehörigkeit zu beobachten ist, die auf dem Ineinandergreifen der Kategorien Kultur, Religion, Ethnizität, Geschlecht und Klasse basiert.
