    Abstract: This is an open access book which focuses on different aspects of education, employment, and successful integration of migrants in three countries: Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. The chapters in this book reflect on these issues from micro, meso and macro perspectives; some are based on interviews with migrants and people who work with them, others on documents and literature about migration. There are different pathways for skilled migrants to vocations. Some start working in their previous vocations after arriving in the new environment. Some re-enter their professions but on a lower level. Some can re-train themselves in a new vocation, and some will go to further education, as studies in different chapters of this book suggest. Common for successful integration seems to be several intertwined factors: the target language competence, strong motivation and agency, supporting networks and supporting persons, as well as structural opportunities of the new environment. The book’s editorial board takes an eclectic view, hoping to start an academic debate about what ‘successful integration’ means. While discussions about the integration of migrants tend to focus on integration failures, there are millions of migrants, in different countries, who have successfully integrated into their new societies

    Abstract: This volume presents a novel, theoretical, micro-analytical model – the 3A Methodology – for assessing the quality of school education. Drawing on philosophers as well as theoretical and pedagogical traditions from European and American contexts, the authors construct a model that is relevant to teachers, researchers, and teacher educators regardless of cultural setting. The chapters explain the 3A Methodology as a specific research tool developed to study classroom situations in the form of case studies, revealing findings that demonstrate prototypical failures (didactic formalism) that threaten to compromise the quality of learning as well as prototypical didactic virtues that verifiably support students’ learning.     Abstract: Extracurricular internships are a constant component of teacher training in Germany, despite their geographically and historically diverse organisation. A discussion of their contribution to the professionalisation of prospective teachers is still lacking, as is an attempt to present the variety of possible designs. This volume addresses both gaps by first discussing from a theoretical perspective the significance of extracurricular internships in the context of continuous professional development in teacher training programmes. Based on the professional internship in North Rhine-Westphalia, exemplary insights are then given into various university internship concepts and diverse projects and collaborations, and initial empirical findings on the contribution of extracurricular practical experience are presented. Las habilidades interpersonales forman un conjunto de comportamientos y hábitos necesarios para garantizar una adecuada interacción, mejorar las relaciones personales y alcanzar los objetivos de la comunicación; es decir, transmitir o recibir correctamente un mensaje, una información o una orden; son útiles para construir equipos de trabajo eficientes y mejorar las bases de la comunicación interna. Por otro lado, saberse desenvolver en estas habilidades interpersonales, sobre todo en el plano de la educación superior posibilita enormemente el trabajo de aprendizaje por el efecto de bienestar en el desarrollo de su actividad, de su quehacer diario. En ese entender, nos permite establecer vínculos y relaciones estables y efectivas con las personas; es así que su desarrollo implica la capacidad de reconocer nuestras emociones y las de los demás, así como la posibilidad de saber regularlas en las relaciones con los otros. Sin embargo, parece ser relegado, mal interpretada o no ser considerada adecuadamente en el marco de la práctica docente en la educación básica, y se limita a trasladar la tarea a escenarios futuros del estudiante como el nivel universitario o de educación superior donde es llevada a cabo por expertos en temas específicos. Lo contrario invitaría a la desmitificación de ciertos paradigmas de la investigación escolar, en los que se brinde apoyo al estudiante como agente de generación de conocimiento, se aleje al estudiante de la formación principalmente in situ, se dinamice la formación en investigación a través de la práctica, y se permite al docente reflexionar y cuestionar la información revisada, y aprender a problematizar los elementos que están en su entorno. La IEI Glorioso San Carlos busca facilitar espacios de encuentro y debate de opiniones entre docentes y estudiantes como fuente de investigación, privilegiando la iniciativa y la creatividad del estudiante y su lugar expectante entre la enseñanza y la investigación, considerando como objetivo de la investigación el hacer y producir. Cada uno de los ensayos de este resumen aborda un tema que fue elegido libremente por cada participante quienes fueron fortalecidos en la competencia escribe diversos tipos de textos y en el uso de herramientas de investigación como: uso adecuado del Word, uso del aplicativo Mendeley, búsqueda de información (bases de datos), citas y referencias en APA7, entre otros.     Abstract: When King’s Digital Lab was established in late 2015 it was conceived as both a craft factory (working with colleagues to produce digital outputs) and a technical experiment (a site where the intersection of technology and the humanities could be explored). Significant progress has been made on both of those fronts: dozens of projects have been enabled, operational white papers have been shared, and research outputs have explored the intellectual and philosophical aspects of the laboratory environment. It is now possible to move beyond the techniques that enabled this success and use insights from the philosophy of technology to explore long-standing concerns about the role of technology in society. In doing so, the laboratory would become an applied techno-philosophical experiment. More radically, it could rehabilitate the use of technical objects in the humanities and reject technophobia as not only unproductive but unethical.     Abstract: This chapter advances a novel theoretic-methodological approach to the analysis of qualitative data. The aim is to achieve a deeper understanding of the relationship between social inequality and educational outcomes in post-colonial rural Southern contexts. It operationalises the Habitus Listening Guide (Arnot & Naveed, 2014) derived from Bourdieu’s theory of cultural reproduction and contemporary narrative theory. The chapter describes the application of four listenings using a dialogic, multi-layered, analysis of interview transcripts. It uncovers the polyphonic voices of four members of Munawar Hussain’s family, describing the impact of the rural social structure on their educational and occupational biographies. Inter-narrativity is generated through repeated listenings of the social structure, of paired father-mother and son-daughter and then of father-son and mother-daughter narratives, and a final mythic-ritual listening which makes audible when religious beliefs are called into play. These beliefs either contribute to the maintenance of poverty and social inequality, and yet inspire strategies to disrupt power structures through education as a religious duty. Each listening reveals the dialectic relationship between the hierarchal post-colonial social order and its school system, and the family’s gendered and generational educational aspirations, strategies, and outcomes

Zum einen entwickelte sich ein großes Potential für Prävention, Intervention und längst überfällige Aufarbeitung. Zum anderen kommt es zu einem gesellschaftlichen Generalverdacht gegen pädagogische Fachkräfte. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt die Arbeit die Frage: Vor welchen Herausforderungen stehen pädagogische Fachkräfte der Heimerziehung angesichts des neuen, öffentlichen Diskurses über sexuelle Gewalt gegen Schutzbefohlene? Anhand von sechs Gruppendiskussionen mit Teams, aus der Heimerziehung, wird mittels der Dokumentarischen Methode rekonstruiert, dass die Fachkräfte sich im Zuge des öffentlichen Diskurses unter Generalverdacht gestellt fühlen. Empirisch kann gezeigt werden, dass das Thema sexuelle Gewalt durch diesen und fünf weitere Anlässe für die Fachkräfte relevant wird (Ausbildung, biografische Betroffenheit, institutionelle Bedingungen, Tatverdacht/Gewalttaten und kindliche Bedürfnisse nach Versorgung und Nähe). Der subjektiv wahrgenommene Generalverdacht geht für die Fachkräfte einher mit der Angst vor Repressalien gegen die eigene Person oder Kolleg*innen. Kindliche Bedürfnisse nach Nähe werden für die Fachkräfte vor dem Hintergrund zum Risiko. Gehen sie den Bedürfnissen fachlich angemessen nach, glauben sie Gefahr zu laufen, sexueller Gewalt bezichtigt zu werden. Sie stehen vor einem professionellen Dilemma und müssen den Schutz der eigenen Person gegen die Nähebedürfnisse der Kinder und Jugendlichen abwägen. Die Folge ist distanziert(ere)s und technokratisches Handeln, welches je nach konzeptioneller Perspektive unprofessionell und im Hinblick auf die Bedürfnisse der Kinder und Jugendlichen verletzend sein kann. Um der Herausforderung zu begegnen, haben die Fachkräfte Bewältigungsstrategien entwickelt. Diese sind davon abhängig, (1) ob die Fachkräfte sich vorstellen können, dass eine*r ihrer Kolleg*innen sexuelle Gewalt verübt, (2) inwieweit sich Fachkräfte für ein Nähebedürfnis der Kinder und Jugendlichen verantwortlich fühlen (familienanalog vs. nicht familienanalog) und (3) wie sich der Umgang der Organisation mit der medialen Thematisierung darstellt. Als ein weiterer Ergebnisstrang kann in der Arbeit gezeigt werden, dass sexuelle Gewalt durch eigene Kolleg*innen nicht, bzw. nur sehr schwer vorstellbar ist. Diese „Undenkbarkeit“ ist in die Sprache der Beforschten eingeschrieben. Die Arbeit zeigt, wie dieser fehlende Wahrnehmungshorizont das Handeln der Fachkräfte beeinflusst. Compositionally, this expression consists of raised eyebrows and pursed lips; sequentially, it is produced in response to a claim made by a co-participant. Instances from both institutional and mundane interaction are examined here. These show participants may or may not be gazing at their co-participant; the expression is not necessarily designed to get uptake. In this respect, this facial expression resembles Goffman’s ‘response cries’ in being produced in the presence of others, but not necessarily designed to get responses from those others. Response relevance is seen to be shaped as much by sequential position as features of composition. This facial expression is shown, when analysed in its sequential environment, to constitute an embodied display of scepticism

    Abstract: It is a well-known fact that the Haitian education system is marked by school segregation as a corollary of social segregation (Joint, 2008; Tardieu 2017; Abraham, 2019). This system of educational apartheid maintains the structural exclusion of disadvantaged and vulnerable children from quality education. In other words, it maintains the learning gap between children from urban and rural areas; between learners from upscale neighborhoods and those from slums; between those of 'well-educated' parents and those of uneducated and impoverished parents. But what about children with disabilities? What kind of reception or educational relationship is provided in the education system for children with physical disabilities or learning disabilities? The results of this research mainly revolve around four key notions, namely: social representations, the social model of disability, pedagogical relations and cognitive justice. They highlight the weight of the social representations of people with disabilities on the forms of educational relationships built and practiced at school. While expectations are high in terms of human resources and adapted teaching materials, this study reveals that all public education policies guided by the principles of inclusion and cognitive justice must act upstream on the underlying thought patterns. These constitute deep obstacles to the intellectual and social emancipation of children with disabilities

    Abstract: The history of public education in Haiti has been characterized by an idealistic notion of extending the enlightenment of education throughout the country. This notion is reflected in the establishment of an important legal arsenal which, since the 19th century, has defined three main principles of the Haitian school system. These three principles have been a constant throughout the history of the country. They were intended to promote the expansion and democratization of schools in Haiti. Despite pompous speeches from its political leaders, Haiti has failed to catch up with the expansion and democratization of schools. Its educational system faces many challenges, including the problem of access to school, the lack of physical infrastructure and the shortage of qualified teaching staff. These challenges have extended the exclusion and inequality which stem from the contempt of the Haitian elites for the education of the people, in particular those in the countryside, and in an economic model based on food, not industry

    Abstract: The aim of this volume is to identify, explore and compare expressions of populism in the Romance-speaking part of the world. The volume includes studies from different academic disciplines such as discourse analysis, cultural and media studies. Populist discourses are generally characterized by a deep polarization of positions and a disproportionate reliance on accusations. Populist discourses frequently reinforce existing antagonisms and undermine the traditional political argumentative style, based on the factual confrontation of opinions in the public space. Populist leaders often present themselves as the unfettered spokespersons of the people with whom they form a community of “us” in the struggle against “them”. This accords with the strong polarization mentioned earlier. The rise of populist discourses in many countries over the past decades could be due to changes in political communication. The constant and overwhelming dissemination of information in all types of media, the consequent relativization of truth, as well as a less clear political division on a left-right scale, could favor political alternatives based on personality and the highly polarized messages we see today. The question of how to reach voters in today's media buzz is a much bigger question today than it was a few decades ago, and the exposure of faces and comments has increased exponentially, which in itself can promote a certain kind of politicians. In fact, there is a strong emphasis on the leadership of populist movements, which is also a recurring theme in this book, alongside the impact of the new media landscape on political discourses. In this light, some of the recurring themes in the thirteen studies included in the volume are the denunciation – by populist voices – of the corruption of the so-called elites as well as their inability to solve concrete political and economic problems. It is also about the escalation and reinforcement of populist discourses as an expression – an act – of extreme criticism, even hatred, against traditional political leaders. These populist voices are looking for scapegoats and claiming proximity to the people, represented in the discourse as an authentic and uniform group. Other recurring themes are the emphasis on traditional values, national symbols, ethnicity, and nostalgia for a bygone era, which are effective subjects for eliciting feelings and fostering a sense of togetherness. The interplay between some of these issues is explored in more detail in the book. The chapters of the book indeed show to what extent populist discourses introduce a system based on characteristics such as unilaterality, through the designation of a threat and/or a common enemy, and on the strong focus on the rejection of the legitimacy of the adversary

    Abstract: The monograph reflects and scientifically and methodologically substantiates ways to solve urgent problems of the theory and practice of training officers of the National Police in terms of the quality of higher education in the context of the imperative of human-dimensional meanings, taking into account studies of Ukrainian psychological, pedagogical, legal comparative studies. In the most general form, the material is presented regarding the strategic guidelines for the quality of education in the WHE with special learning conditions in the context of Ukraine's integration into the European educational space. Philosophical and methodological approaches to solving existing disagreements in the field of human measurement of the quality of police education in Ukraine and abroad are studied in integral connection with the corresponding concepts of human development; leadership theories; the genesis of personnel work on professional training and evaluation of the activities of police officers in the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. Features of the human-measurement training of officers of the National Police of Ukraine are explained on the basis of the provisions of the modern post-non-classical methodology of science, a general scientific holistic approach, humanistic pedagogy, as well as the methodological foundations for the implementation of international standards of ethical behavior in the activities of police officers, which is an objective need of the current Ukrainian education system in general and in particular, a prerequisite for the prevention of corruption offenses, the vitality of virtue in society. The productivity of reflexive practices of self-organization of the personality of future police officers is substantiated as a condition for the development of psychological resilience. The book proves the necessity and prospects of research and implementation in the theory and practice of police education of the concept of Ukrainian general scientific methodology regarding the unity of the formation and development of a Human on the basis of the cognitive-emotional-volitional triad of components of the value experience of the individual. Based on the real originality of the formation of the value experience of a police officer in the process of professional training, constructive practice, the general theoretical and methodological origins and meaningful lines of practical improvement and further personal and professional growth of a police officer in their official activities as mechanisms for protecting human rights and freedoms in the activities of law enforcement officers are identified. The novelty of the approaches is associated with the use of the key foundations of psycho-pedagogical support and the development of pedagogical skills of HEI teachers with special learning conditions, the activities of mentors to harmonize the professional training of the applicant's personality in the system of departmental education, the use of a criteria approach for assessing learning outcomes, the design features of police work programs in the context of the scale of human-dimensional meanings evaluating the quality of higher education The constructiveness of this perspective is distinguished, first of all, by a holistic combination and use as the latest achievements of the psychological, pedagogical, legal, neurophysiological branches of scientific knowledge to explain the newly formed pedagogical phenomena of the modern educational sphere in the aspect of innovativeness of markers for assessing the quality of educational and research activities education; and the understanding that universal human and nation-creating value orientations as a special social basis of the culturological worldview should be extrapolated into the global function of modern education, which should determine and realize its social power that characterizes civilizational development in different historical epochs. In this context, the issues of introducing the axiological essence, designing, implementing and evaluating the relevant educational programs for training officers of the National Police are specified.     Abstract: This edited volume focuses on the thorny and somewhat controversial issue of teaching (and learning) interculturality in a way that considers the notion from critical and reflexive perspectives when introduced to students. Comprised of three parts, the book discusses the nuts and bolts of teaching interculturally, considers changes in the teaching of interculturality, and provides pedagogical insights into interculturalising the notion. It studies both teaching im-/explicitly about interculturality and how to incorporate interculturality into teaching practices or into an institution. By sharing varied cases and theoretical reflections on the topic, the editors and contributors from different parts of the world aim to stimulate more initiatives to enrich the field instead of delimiting it, especially in complement to and beyond the 'West' or 'Global North', and also to build up further reflexivity in the way readers engage with interculturality in education. This will be a must-read for teachers and researchers of intercultural communication education at different educational levels, as well as anyone interested in scholarship on education for interculturality

    Abstract: Manuscripts in this monograph are sorted into five categories: 1. Case Reports: a description of living as a bedridden patient; structured interviews with severely affected ME/CFS patients; how past events contribute to severe ME/CFS; a comparison of moderately ill, severely ill, and very severely ill; case reports of ME/CFS in children. 2. A healthcare provider’s view of managing ME/CFS patients. 3. Characterization of the Severely and Very Severely Affected: (1) the most troubling symptoms; (2) disease severity diminishes capacity for exercise, (3) operationalized definitions of the severely ill and very severely ill; (4) the usefulness of a modified Korean Chalder Fatigue Scale Questionnaire; (5) cardiac dimensions and function in patients; (6) an easier tilt test; and (7) review of sleep studies. 4. Progress in Diagnosis and Treatment: (1) objective measures for grading ME/CFS; (2) a sitting tilt test for orthostatic intolerance; (3) the benefits of IVIgG; (4) risks and protective factors in suicidality; (5) malnutrition and overcoming it; (7) partnerships between patients, caregivers, and providers, and the use of technology; (8) a holistic model of care, “Compassion in Practice; and (9) the effects of suffering, utilizing a four-phase model. 5.
