Abstract: This landmark book provides a comprehensive anthropological introduction to contemporary Central Asia. Established and emerging scholars of the region critically interrogate the idea of a 'Central Asian World' at the intersection of post-Soviet, Persianate, East and South Asian worlds. Encompassing chapters on life between Afghanistan and Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Xinjiang, this volume situates the social, political, economic, ecological and ritual diversity of Central Asia in historical context. The book ethnographically explores key areas such as the growth of Islamic finance, the remaking of urban and sacred spaces, as well as decolonizing and queering approaches to Central Asia. The volume's discussion of More-than-Human Worlds, Everyday Economies, Material Culture, Migration and Statehood engages core analytical concerns such as globalization, inequality and postcolonialism. Far more than a survey of a 'world region', the volume illuminates how people in Central Asia make a life at the intersection of diverse cross-cutting currents and flows of knowledge. In so doing, it stakes out the contribution of an anthropology of and from Central Asia to broader debates within contemporary anthropology.

Abstract: "Provenance research on collections from the Global South in Europe is now unavoidable in the fields of museum studies and cultural policy, yet no scholarly work has scrutinized the collections of the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren (Belgium) as a whole. While the institution's history has been the subject of study, this book provides new frameworks for interpretation in light of current debates. Structured around two axes - the heritage field in historical and contemporary Belgian and Congolese contexts, and the more specific case of the Tervuren museum's collections -, this edited volume gives a broad overview, explores new trends, and presents the challenges facing museums today, with recent and unpublished research, interviews, and artistic contributions in English or French."--

Abstract: "Cultural Heritage Management in Africa explores the diversity of Africa's cultural heritage by analysing how and why this heritage has been managed, and by considering the factors that continue to influence management strategies and systems throughout the African continent. Including contributions from prominent scholars and heritage professionals working across Africa, the volume presents critical, contemporary perspectives on the state of heritage in the area. Chapters analyse the practices that emanated from different colonial experiences and consider what impact these had - and continue to have - on the management of African heritage. It also critically examines the ideological influence of independence movements on the African continent's management and remembering of heritage, and considers whether there are any differences in heritage management between countries that experienced armed conflicts and those that did not. The volume will be the first to critically assess the state of heritage management now, at a time when vital conversations about the balance between heritage and development is ongoing and the actions of new players have begun to impact the management and practice of heritage in the region. Cultural Heritage Management in Africa will be essential reading for those engaged in the study of museums and heritage, development, archaeology, anthropology, history and African studies. It will also be of interest to heritage and museum professionals who wish to learn more about the decolonisation of heritage"--

Abstract: "While historically focusing on the object, the study of ethics in conservation has expanded to consider the human aspect of conservation work. This book offers a flexible framework to guide decision-making in line with this development, offering an inclusive, compassionate approach to collections care. This edited volume contributes theories and international examples for advancing conservation practice and providing best practice for the field that center people in conservation of cultural heritage and collections care. The first part examines the ethical theory that underpins conservation decision-making by challenging outdated norms, introducing updated methods, and demonstrating new ways to approach compassionate collections care. The second part considers the challenges of human-centred ethics in conservation practice, while the final part provides real-world examples and case studies of these best practices in action, including successful challenges to colonial authority. By presenting both theoretical and practical aspects of prioritizing people, this volume establishes the need for rethinking conservation approaches while demonstrating how to do so effectively. Combining theory and practice, Prioritizing People in Ethical Decision-Making and Caring for Cultural Heritage Collections is valuable reading for conservation professionals, including collections managers, conservators, curators, and registrars. It will also benefit students working in Cultural Heritage Conservation, Museum studies, and Heritage Studies, as well as those taking courses in Art History and Anthropology"--

Abstract: "Going beyond strictly legal and property-oriented aspects of the restitution debate, restitution is considered as part of a larger set of processes of return that affect museums and collections, as well as notions of heritage and object status. Covering a range of case studies and a global geography, authors aim to historicize and bring depth to contemporary debates in relation to both the return of material culture and human remains. Defined as contested holdings, differing museum collections ranging from fine arts to physical anthropology provide connections between the treatment and conceptualization of collections that generally occupy separate realms in the museum world"--

Abstract: "Multilingual China comprises frontline empirical research into a range of important issues that arise from the presence of 55 official ethnic minority groups, plus China's search to modernize and strengthen the nation's place in the world order. Topics focus on the dynamics of national, ethnic minority and foreign languages in use, policy making and education, inside China and beyond. Micro-studies of language contact and variation are included, as are chapters dealing with multilingual media and linguistic landscapes. The book highlights tensions such as threats to the sustainability of weak languages and dialects, the role and status of foreign languages (especially English) and how Chinese can be presented as a viable regional or international language"--

Abstract: "The present volume is a pioneering collection of poetry by the outstanding Kenyan poet, intellectual and imam Ustadh Mahmmoud Mau (born 1952) from Lamu island, once an Indian Ocean hub, now on the edge of the nation state. By means of poetry in Arabic script, the poet raises his voice against social ills and injustices troubling his community on Lamu. The book situates Mahmoud Mau's oeuvre within transoceanic exchanges of thoughts so characteristic of the Swahili coast. It shows how Swahili Indian Ocean intellectual history inhabits an individual biography and writings while also portraying a unique African Muslim thinker and his poetry in the local language, which has so often been neglected as major site for critical discourse in Islamic Africa. The authors' approaches highlight the relevance of local epistemologies as archives for understanding the relationship between reform Islam and local communities in contemporary Africa. The selected poetry is clustered around the following themes: jamii: societal topical issues, ilimu: the importance of education, huruma: social roles and responsabilities, matukio: biographical events and maombi: supplications. Prefaced by Prof. Rayya Timamy (Nairobi University), the volume includes contributions by Jasmin Mahazi, Kai Kresse and Kadara Swaleh, Annachiara Raia and Clarissa Vierke"--

Abstract: "Qummut Qukiria! celebrates art and culture within and beyond traditional Inuit and Sámi homelands in the Circumpolar Arctic — from the recovery of traditional practices such as storytelling and skin sewing to the development of innovative new art forms such as throatboxing (a hybrid of traditional Inuit throat singing and beatboxing). In this illuminating book, curators, scholars, artists, and activists from Inuit Nunangat, Kalaallit Nunaat, Sápmi, Canada, and Scandinavia address topics as diverse as Sámi rematriation and the revival of the ládjogahpir (a traditional woman’s headgear), the experience of bringing Inuit stone carving to a workshop for inner-city youth, and the decolonizing potential of Traditional Knowledge and its role in contemporary design and beyond. Qummut Qukiria! showcases the thriving art and culture of the Indigenous Circumpolar peoples in the present and demonstrates its importance for the revitalization of language, social well-being, and cultural identity."--

Abstract: Revolusi! explores the history of the Indonesian struggle for independence between 1945 and 1949. Central to this are the fighters, artists, diplomats, politicians, journalists, men, women and children, who experienced the revolution first hand. Dutch and Indonesian authors show how the ideal of a free Indonesia was fervently pursued; how it was fought over, how negotiations took place, how propaganda was carried out and how the revolution changed people’s lives. In this way Revolusi! presents a range of personal and collective experiences, told from multiple points of view: from Indonesian and Dutch perspectives as well as those of the groups and individuals in between, with an eye towards the international power arena. The contemporary works of art, historical objects, propaganda posters, films, photographs and archival documents that accompany these stories testify to a turbulent past.

Abstract: "The 2003 UNESCO Convention on the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage was a major step in addressing concerns about musical diversity and vitality on a global scale. 180 nation-states have ratified the Convention to date. Many have developed policies to address the sustainability of their music practices. On the eve of its twentieth anniversary of the Convention, 14 experts were invited to reflect on two decades of approaching music as Intangible Cultural Heritage. In introducing the contributions to this volume, this chapter introduces the genesis of the Convention, its most prominent features, its workings and successes, and the challenges that have arisen from using this framework to address threats to music sustainability worldwide"--

Abstract: The galang collective convenes regularly to discuss the role of museums and other cultural institutions in the past and present colonisation of First Nations people. It's a sovereign space to share culture and creative practice, and challenge narratives of sovereignty, decolonisation, identity, power and language. galang 01 brings together transcripts of the collective's powerful and moving conversations with individual members' contributions. Essays from Léuli Eshraghi, Liisa-Rávná Finbog and Biung Ismahasan explore the representation of First Nations art and culture; Mayunkiki and her collaborator Kanoko Tamura exchange a series of text messages that range across Indigenous identity, struggle and support; Brook Garru Andrew gives us an insight into his creative process with poems and sketches from his journals; and Emily McDaniel, Director First Nations at the Powerhouse, reflects on yindyamarra in the museum. First Nations designer Jenna Lee has designed the book as an object that has no beginning or end to reflect the circularity of time and stories that fold and turn on themselves. A companion volume, galang 02, will be published in November 2022. galang volumes 01 and 02 are published in collaboration with the Powerhouse Museum and Garru Editions

Abstract: This volume focuses on recent developments in the investigation of the role of microbes associated with historic materials. Contributions from world-renowned scientists describe the latest advancements in the role of microorganisms in the degradation, treatment and protection of cultural heritage materials and objects including ceramic tiles, stained glass, stone and wooden buildings, paintings and library materials. These developments range from the use of third-generation sequencing to detect organisms that are present in the microbiome of colonized parchment, to the ecological approaches being used to investigate microbial colonization of archaeological sites, to the use of bacteria to clean wall paintings. To conclude each section, we have included a synopsis of current research illustrating recent developments

Abstract: "Knowledge Within: Treasures of the Northwest Coast looks into seventeen of the numerous sites in the Pacific Northwest region with major collections of Northwest Coast Indigenous material culture, bringing attention to a wide range of approaches to caring for and exhibiting such treasures. Each chapter is written by one or more people who work or worked in the organization they write about. Each chapter takes a different approach to the invitation to reflect upon their institution: some narrate a history of the institution, some focus on particular pieces in the collection, and some consider the significance of the work currently being done for the present and future. They do more than fill in the gaps and background of an already existing discussion. They show that these are places and moments in a much longer story, still ongoing, with many characters--individuals, institutions, communities, artworks, treasures--on different, although often parallel or intersecting, journeys."--

Abstract: "The Routledge Handbook of Chinese Medicine is an extensive, interdisciplinary guide to the nature of traditional medicine and healing in the Chinese cultural region, and its plural epistemologies. Established experts and the next generation of scholars interpret the ways in which Chinese medicine has been understood and portrayed from the beginning of the empire (third century BCE) to the globalisation of Chinese products and practices in the present day, taking in subjects from ancient medical writings to therapeutic movement, to talismans for healing and traditional medicines that have inspired global solutions to contemporary epidemics. The volume is divided into seven parts: Longue Durée and Formation of Institutions and Traditions Sickness and Healing Food and Sex Spiritual and Orthodox Religious Practices The World of Sinographic Medicine Wider Diasporas Negotiating Modernity This handbook therefore introduces the broad range of ideas and techniques that comprise pre-modern medicine in China, and the historiographical and ethnographic approaches that have illuminated them. It will prove a useful resource to students and scholars of Chinese studies, and the history of medicine and anthropology. It will also be of interest to practitioners, patients, and specialists wishing to refresh their knowledge with the latest developments in the field"--

Abstract: "What did a woman who lived and worked under slavery know about her ‘owner’ in the Dutch Republic? What did an owner of a sugar factory in Amsterdam know about the circumstances under which the sugar he processed was grown? And what did a freedom fighter on Curaçao know about the struggle for equal civil rights in Europe? Under Dutch rule during the colonial era, more than a million men, women and children from Asia and Africa were enslaved and shipped to the other side of the world. Very little is known about their lives. Using a variety of sources, Slavery provides a portrait of ten people from this period: people who suffered under the slavery system, people who rose in resistance against it and people who profited from it. This broad palette of individual experiences reveals diverse facets of the Dutch history of slavery and gives us a unique isight into the societal reality of the time"

Abstract: "Music is typically encountered as a cultural surface. Songs emanate instantaneously and almost magically from our computers and phones. Tools for playing and making music, such as recordings and guitars, wait for us in stores, ready for purchase with no assembly required. And when we're done with this stuff, we can kick it to the curb, where it disappears effortlessly and without a trace. Day-to-day musical enjoyment seems so simple, so easy, so automatic. But it isn't. This book digs beneath such surface-level encounters to reveal the infrastructural dimensions of music and listening. It takes nothing for granted about the manufacture, delivery, or disposal of music's material and human bases. These infrastructural phenomena encompass the interrelated material, organizational, and ideological systems that facilitate three main phases in the social life and social death of musical commodities: (1) resources and production, (2) circulation and transmission, (3) failure and waste. The book asks how these three phases influence and respond to aesthetic conventions, material-environmental realities, and political-economic conditions in both industrializing and industrialized parts of the world. Although sawmills, mineshafts, power grids, telecoms networks, transport systems, and junk piles may seem peripheral to musical culture, Audible Infrastructures shows that all these humble things and their ordinary people are actually pivotal to what music is, how it works, and why it matters. Undertaking a concerted archaeology of music's media infrastructures is thus a means of understanding society and of knowing ourselves-and it is a step toward the reorientation of our musical cultures"--

Abstract: "The essays in this book analyze aspects of colonialism through investigations into the art, popular literature, material culture, film, and exhibitions that represented, celebrated, or were created for France's colonies across the seas. These studies draw from documents and media-photographs, albums, postcards, maps, posters, advertisements, and children's games-related to the nineteenth- and twentieth-century French Empire"--

Abstract: "Across Africa, artists increasingly turn to NGO sponsorship in pursuit of greater influence and funding, while simultaneously NGOs-both international and local-commission arts projects to buttress their interventions and achieve greater reach and marketability. As such, the key values of artistic expression become "healing" and "sensitization" measured in turn by "impact" and "effectiveness." Such rubrics obscure the aesthetic complexities of the artworks and the power dynamics that inform their production. Clashes arise as foreign NGOs import foreign aesthetic models and preconceptions about their efficacy, alongside foreign interpretations of politics, medicine, psychology, trauma, memorialization, and so on. Meanwhile, each community embraces its own aesthetic precedents, often at odds with the intentions of humanitarian agencies. The arts are a sphere in which different worldviews enter into conflict and conversation. To tackle the consequences of aid agency arts deployment, the volume assembles ten case studies from across the African continent employing multiple media including music, sculpture, photography, drama, storytelling, ritual, and protest marches. Organized under three widespread yet under-analyzed objectives for arts in emergency-demonstration, distribution, and remediation-each case offers a different disciplinary and methodological perspective on a common complication in NGO-sponsored creativity. The Art of Emergency shifts the discourse on arts activism away from fixations on message and toward diverse investigations of aesthetics and power negotiations. In doing so, this volume brings into focus the conscious and unconscious configurations of humanitarian activism, the social lives it attempts to engage, and the often-fraught interactions between the two"--

Abstract: "This volume brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous repatriation practitioners and researchers to provide the reader with an international overview of the removal and return of Ancestral Remains. The Ancestral Remains of Indigenous peoples are today housed in museums and other collecting institutions globally. They were taken from anywhere the deceased can be found, and their removal occurred within a context of deep power imbalance within a colonial project that had a lasting effect on Indigenous peoples worldwide. Through the efforts of First Nations campaigners, many have returned home. However, a large number are still retained. In many countries, the repatriation issue has driven a profound change in the relationship between Indigenous peoples and collecting institutions. It has enabled significant steps towards resetting this relationship from one constrained by colonisation to one that seeks a more just, dignified, and truthful basis for interaction. The history of repatriation is one of Indigenous perseverance and success. The authors of this book contribute major new work and explore new facets of this global movement. They reflect on nearly 40 years of repatriation, its meaning and value, impact and effect. This book is an invaluable contribution to repatriation practice and research, providing a wealth of new knowledge to readers with interests in Indigenous histories, self determination, and the relationship between collecting institutions and Indigenous peoples"--

Abstract: Barkcloth or tapa, a cloth made from the inner bark of trees, was widely used in place of woven cloth in the Pacific islands until the 19th century. A ubiquitous material, it was integral to the lives of islanders and used for clothing, furnishings and ritual artefacts. 'Material Approaches to Polynesian Barkcloth' takes a new approach to the study of the history of this region through its barkcloth heritage, focusing on the plants themselves and surviving objects in historic collections. This object-focused approach has filled gaps in our understanding of the production and use of this material through an investigation of this unique fabric's physical properties, transformation during manufacture and the regional history of its development in the 18th and 19th centuries. The book is the outcome of a research project which focused on three important collections of barkcloth at The Hunterian, University of Glasgow; Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. It also looks more widely at the value of barkcloth artefacts in museum collections for enhancing both contemporary practice and a wider appreciation of this remarkable fabric. The contributors include academics, curators, conservators and makers of barkcloth from Oceania and beyond, in an interdisciplinary study which draws together insights from object-based and textual reseach, fieldwork and tapa making, and information on the plants used to make fibres and colourants.0This book will be of interest to tapa makers, museum professionals including curators and conservators; academics and students in the fields of anthropology, museum studies and conservation; museum visitors and anyone interested in finding out more about barkcloth.

Abstract: "PLAYING FOR KEEPS is an edited volume of essays exploring the global dimensions of musical improvisation. The editors are interested in what they call the "aftermaths" associated with improvisational music practices: the various ways musical improvisation can respond in the aftermath of trauma, and the imagined possibilities that lie in the wake of improvisatory performance. The volume is presented as global case studies, each offering an example of how musical improvisation can foster communal responses to the realities of colonialism, imperialism, and war. By turning its attention to the global scale, this volume seeks to complicate the notion, popular within North American contexts, that improvisation necessarily leads to liberation. Instead, the editors seek to situate improvisation within local contexts, and, by examining how improvisational music practices are enmeshed in local and global power structures, point to improvisation as a site of potentiality. The volume is comprised of twelve chapters, with an introduction by the editors. Chapter One, Matana Roberts's poem "manifesto," stages improvisatory practice on the page in the form of a response to the Preamble of the United States Constitution. In chapter 2, Stephanie Vos examines the communal response to the burglary of the Zimology Institute in South Africa-an institute dedicated to educational programs about musical improvisation-which itself took the form of an improvisational music performance. Chapter 4, an interview with jazz musician and composer Vijay Iyer, examines Iyer's collaborative project Holding it Down, a performance of poetry and music that explores the experiences of US veterans of color. This chapter, in particular, complicates notions of improvisation, as Iyer claims that both oppressed people and their oppressors use improvisatory practices to accomplish their respective goals. In Chapter 8 Darci Sprengel documents the use of Tarab, a practice of "deep listening" that dissolves the distinction between self and other, by Mini Mobile Concerts (MMC), an improvisational concert group active in post-Mubarak Egypt. In particular, Sprengel focuses on how the improvisational practices of MMC addressed the topic of sexual assault, thereby renegotiating the gendered public space of the street. Chapter 9, an interview with Reem Abdul Hadi and Odej Turjman of the Al Mada Association for Art-Based Community, examines how Palestinians in the Occupied West Bank and Palestine use music imp ...

Was bedeutet Partizipation? Wie lassen sich Konzepte eines weltweit geteilten und zu teilenden Erbes („shared heritage“) in die kulturelle Bildung integrieren? In dem Band sind Beiträge aus den Kunstgeschichte(n), der Kunstvermittlung, Geschichtswissenschaft, Kulturanthropologie, Musikwissenschaft und den Museum Studies versammelt. Gemeinsamer Gegenstand sind die kulturellen Verflechtungen von Objekten, Wegen und Akteur*innen in einer mobilen Welt

Abstract: "This book presents innovative and creative ethnographic perspectives on the intersection between art, anthropology, and contested cultural heritage resulting from ethnographic and artistic research by the TRACES project (an interdisciplinary research project funded by the EU's Horizon 2020 programme involving a collaboration between institutional partners in 11 European countries). The case studies in this volume critically assess and evaluate how and in which arrangements artistic/aesthetic methods and creative everyday practices contribute to strengthening communities both culturally and economically. They also explore the extent to which these methods emphasize minority voices and ultimately set in motion a process of reflexive Europeanisation from below which unfolds within Europe and beyond its borders. At the heart of these ethnographic case studies is the development of a new way of transmitting contentious cultural heritage, which responds to the present situation in Europe of unstable political conditions and a sense of Europe in crisis. With chapters looking at difficult art exhibitions on colonialism, death masks, Holocaust memorials and skull collections, the contributors articulate a response to the crisis in current economic-political conditions in Europe and advances brand new theoretical groundwork on the configuration of a renewed European identity. Through combining studies of heritage within museums, this volume will appeal to students and scholars of anthropology, heritage and museum studies, and visual culture"--

Bringing together international curators and researchers from the fields of art and cultural history, it provides new research and perspectives on the curatorial process and bridges the traditional gap between theoretical and academic museum studies and museum practices. Abstract: "Moving Spaces: Creolisation and Mobility in Africa, the Atlantic and Indian Ocean addresses issues of creolisation, mobility, and migration of ideas, songs, stories, and people, as well as plants, in various parts of Africa, the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean worlds. It brings together Anglophone, Francophone and Lusophone specialists from various fields - anthropology, geography, history, language & literary studies - from Africa, Brazil, Europe, and the Indo-Pacific. It is a book which, while opening new perspectives, also intriguingly suggests that languages are essential to all processes of creolisation, and that therefore the latter cannot be understood without reference to the former. Its strength therefore lies in bringing together studies from different language domains, particularly Afrikaans, Creole, English, French, Portuguese, and Sanskrit. Contributors include Andrea Acri, Joaze Bernardino, Marina Berthet, Alain Kaly, Uhuru Phalafala, Haripriya Rangan, Fernando Rosa, António Tomás and Shaun Viljoen"--
