    Abstract: What makes some multiethnic states integrate and others descend into civil war? Ishiyama and Breuning extend traditional explanations centered on socioeconomic, cultural, and historical factors to argue that the actions of leaders of ethnic segments-too often ignored-are also critical determinants of policy outcomes. Applying a framework derived from comparative politics and IR theory, the authors explore two sets of empirical cases: the emergence of new nationalisms in old European democracies (the United Kingdom and Belgium) and the reemergence of old nationalisms in several new democracies (Bulgaria, Slovakia, Estonia, and Latvia). Their work sheds crucially important light on an issue that is one of the most prominent in world politics today

    Abstract: "This volume explores the shifts in how civil disobedience has come to be theorized, defined, understood and practiced in contemporary politics. As social activism takes increasingly global forms, the goals of individuals and groups who view themselves as disobedient activists today can be defined in broader cultural terms than before, and their relationship to law and violence can be ambiguous. Civil disobedience may no longer be entirely nonviolent, its purposes no longer necessarily serve progressive or emancipatory agendas. Its manifestations often blur the lines established in "classic", philosophically justified, and self-regulatory forms as epitomized in mass nonviolent protests of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, and theories of Arendt, Rawls and Dworkin. How civil disobedience operates has changed over the years, and this volume unpacks its many contemporary lives. It discusses new theoretical and political dilemmas and paradoxes through empirical cases and practical examples from Europe, the US, and South Asia, which enables a "mirroring" perspective for the challenges and complexities of civil disobedience in different parts of the world.     Abstract: This book reflects on the complex and contested idea of South Africa, drawing on a wide range of disciplinary perspectives. Ever since the delineation of South Africa as a country, the many diverse groups of people contained within its borders have struggled to translate a mere geographical description into the identity of a people. Today the new struggles for South Africa' and to become South African' are inextricably intertwined with complex challenges of transformation, xenophobia, claims of reverse racism, social justice, economic justice, service delivery, and the resurgent decolonization struggles reverberating inside the universities. This book covers the genealogy of the idea of South Africa, exploring how the country has been conceived of by a broad group of actors, including the British, Afrikaners, diverse African nationalist traditions, and new formations such as the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Black First Land First (BLF), and student formations (Rhodes Must Fall & Fees Must Fall). Over the course of the book, a broad range of themes are covered, including identity formation, modernity, race, ethnicity, indigeneity, autochthony, land, gender, intellectual traditions, poetics of South Africanness, language, popular culture, truth and reconciliation, and national development planning. Concluding with important reflections on how a colonial imaginary can be changed into a free and inclusive postcolonial nation-state, this book will be an important read for Africanist researchers from across the humanities and social sciences

    Abstract: "Since the 1980s the study of genocide has exploded, both historically and geographically, to encompass earlier epochs, other continents, and new cases. The concept of genocide has proved its worth, but that expansion has also compounded the tensions between a rigid legal concept and the manifold realities researchers have discovered. The legal and political benefits that accompany genocide status have also reduced complex discussions of historical events to a simplistic binary--is it genocide or not--a situation often influenced by powerful political pressures. Genocide addresses these tensions and tests the limits of the concept in cases ranging from the role of sexual violence during the Holocaust and state-induced mass starvation in Kazakh and Ukrainian history to what the Armenian, Rwandan, and Burundi experiences reveal about the uses and pitfalls of reading history and conducting politics through the lens of genocide.     Abstract: While the nation-state gave rise to the advent of museums, its influence in times of transculturality and post-/decolonial studies appears to have vanished. But is this really the case? Both political elites and everyday citizens are divided into rival and mutually antagonistic partisan camps, with each camp questioning the political legitimacy and democratic commitments of the other side. Does this polarization pose threats to democracy itself? What can make some democratic institutions resilient in the face of such challenges? Democratic Resilience brings together a distinguished group of specialists to examine how polarization affects the performance of institutional checks and balances as well as the political behavior of voters, civil society actors, and political elites. The volume bridges the conventional divide between institutional and behavioral approaches to the study of American politics and incorporates historical and comparative insights to explain the nature of contemporary challenges to democracy. It also breaks new ground to identify the institutional and societal sources of democratic resilience

    Abstract: Der Sammelband stellt die Frage nach den Erscheinungsformen und Ausdrucksweisen des Antisemitismus in der Musik. Als „negative Leitidee der Moderne“ ist Antisemitismus in sämtlichen Musikrichtungen zu finden und wird auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen vermittelt: sei es durch Songtexte, Albumcover, Musikvideos, Bühnenauftritte, durch die Musikform bzw. des Stils an sich oder die ideologische und strukturelle Einbindung von Musiker:innen in die extrem rechte Szene bis hin zur Beeinflussung ganzer Musikszenen durch die antisemitische BDS-Kampagne. In den Aufsätzen geben die Autor:innen daher einen Überblick zu aktuellen Entwicklungen und liefern Analysen und Einschätzungen zu den mannigfaltigen antisemitischen Verstrickungen in der Musik.     Abstract: This anthology addresses the question of how anti-Semitism appears and is expressed in modern music. As a ‘negative guiding idea of modernity’, anti-Semitism can be found in all musical genres and is conveyed on different levels, be it through song lyrics, album covers, music videos, stage performances, through the musical form or style itself, or the ideological and structural integration of musicians into the extreme rightwing scene, all the way to the influence of entire music scenes through the anti-Semitic BDS campaign. In the essays in this book, the authors therefore give an overview of current develop-ments and provide analyses and assessments of the manifold anti-Semitic manifestations in music. With contributions by Lukas Geck, Maria Kanitz, Annica Peter, Jan Schäfer, Jakob Baier, Kai E. Gibt es eine "postsowjetische Identität", ein gemeinsames Selbstverständnis der Menschen in diesen Ländern, das sich zugleich als Bewältigung der sowjetischen Vergangenheit und als ein Aufbruch zu neuen Orientierungen verstehen lässt? Gibt es – jenseits von Nationalismus, Romantisierung oder Abrechnung – eine postsowjetische Vision der künftigen Gesellschaften, die sich vom Blick auf die Vergangenheit lösen kann? Welcher Menschentypus folgt dem "homo sovieticus" und wieviel vom Sowjetmenschen besteht noch fort in diesem? Wie schlagen sich die wirtschaftlichen, politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Umbrüche der postsowjetischen Gesellschaften nieder in der Sicht der Bürger*innen auf ihre Lage, in ihren Erwartungen, Hoffnungen und Idealen, in ihrem Lebenssinn und ihren Wertorientierungen? Finden die jüngeren Generationen die Freiheit und den Mut für neue Utopien und woher nehmen sie das Fundament für diese?     Abstract: Спустя тридцать лет после распада Советского Союза кажется оправданным подвести итоги и изучить вопрос о том, какие изменения претерпели в настоящее время бывшие советские республики и какие политические модели и ценности, передающие смысл жизни, принесла история преобразований. Есть ли "постсоветская идентичность", у людей этих стран общее представление о себе, которое можно трактовать как примирение с советским прошлым, так и как путь к новым ориентациям? Есть ли – помимо национализма, романтизации или расправы с прошлым – постсоветское видение будущего общества, которое может отвлечься от взгляда на прошлое? Какой тип человека следует за «homo sovieticus» и сколько в нем еще осталось от советского человека? Как экономические, политические, социальные и культурные потрясения в постсоветских обществах отражаются на взглядах граждан на свое положение, на их ожидания, надежды и идеалы, на их смысл жизни и их ценностные ориентации? Найдёт ли молодое поколение свободу и смелость для новых утопий и что они возьмут за основу при их формировании?
