Abstract: "This volume tracks the complex relationships between language, education and nation-building in Southeast Asia, focusing on how language policies have been used by states and governments as instruments of control, assimilation and empowerment. The individual chapters each represent one of the countries in the region, namely Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Written by established and well-known scholars of language, education and politics in Southeast Asia, the chapters examine the place of minority or non-dominant languages in nation-building agendas and practices, as well as their impact both on the linguistic ecology of specific countries and on the cultural, socio-economic and political well-being of their speakers. With a recent worldwide push towards multilingual education as one way to address the cultural, political and economic marginalization of millions of people around the world, this volume also examines the possibilities and challenges of implementing mother tongue-based education programmes in the region"..

Description / Table of Contents: With the notable exception of the application of the metonymy model to explain stereotyping (Kristiansen, 2001), sociolinguistic language attitudes research has typically focused exclusively on explicit attitudes toward foreign accents without providing a cognitive model to explain how such attitudes are formed. At the same time, researchers in other fields have proposed the use of specific cognitive processing models such as the Elaboration Likelihood Model (Petty & Cacioppo, 1986) to explain the cognitive processes underlying reactions to foreign-accented speakers, without isolating foreign

Abstract: How is language used in Egyptian public discourse to illuminate the collective identity of Egyptians? How does this identity relate to language form and content? This book explores these questions by drawing on sources including newspaper articles, caricatures, blogs, patriotic songs, films, school textbooks, TV talk-shows, poetry, and novels. As well as furthering our understanding of the relationship between identity and language, it yields insights about the intricate ways in which media and public discourse help shape and outline identity through linguistic processes

Abstract: "No one sees and synthesizes the theoretical connections between diverse strands of sociolinguistic research better than Allan Bell. His Guidebook to Sociolinguistics is comprehensive, up-to-date, and especially rich in fresh examples and perspectives." John R. Rickford, Stanford University "The Guidebook to Sociolinguistics offers … integrated exercises derived from Bell's extensive research background and allows readers to experience both the operational details of primary analysis and the theoretical constructs that underlie the field of sociolinguistics. It's the perfect introduction!" Walt Wolfram, North Carolina State University "Allan Bell brings his great wealth of experience as researcher, teacher and editor of the Journal of Sociolinguistics to tell us not just what sociolinguistics is but how sociolinguistics is done. Best of all, he shows how we can do sociolinguistics ourselves." Jenny Cheshire, Queen Mary, University of London "Bell has provided a detailed and authoritative road map to sociolinguistics. Carefully structured, clearly written, lively and accessible throughout, the Guidebook introduces all the major traditions of sociolinguistics, pin-pointing the most important sources and perspectives, supported by a wealth of practical examples and exercises." Abstract: While linguistics traditionally focused on a language use oriented towards the written norm, this bookemphasizes the interactional use of language. On a theoretical and empirical basis, the author develops linguistic concepts to analyzeboth spoken and written interactional language. Byillustrating the relevance of syntactic structures of interactional language, the book also contributes to areas of applied linguistics, such as grammar writing and German as a second language

Abstract: "How do people organize their body movement and talk when they interact with one another in the material world? How do they coordinate linguistic structures with bodily resources (such as gaze and gesture) to bring about coherent and intelligible courses of action? How are physical settings, artifacts, technologies, and non-linguistic sign-systems implicated in social interaction and shared cognition? This volume brings together advanced work by leading international scholars who share video-based research methods that integrate semiotic, linguistic, sociological, anthropological, and cognitive science perspectives with detailed, microanalytic observations. Collectively they provide a coherent framework for analyzing the production of meaning and the organization of social interaction in the complex and heterogeneous settings that are characteristic of modern life: ranging from ordinary and bilingual conversation to family interaction, and from daycare centers to work settings such as airplanes, clinics, and architects' offices, and to activities such as auctions and musical performances. Several chapters investigate how participants with communicative impairments (aphasia, blindness, deafness) creatively build meaning with others. Embodied Interaction is indispensable for anyone interested in the study of language and social interaction. This volume will be a point of reference for future research on multimodality in human communication and action"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: The graphic design of texts has become a linguistic object in its own right. To date, however, it has rarely been considered from a sociolinguistic perspective. The present volume attempts to fill this gap by offering the first comprehensive sociolinguistic theory of visual communication. It shows how "meaning" is generated through graphic variation, based on collective communicative knowledge and social attribution processes

Note: "This brief, student-friendly introduction to the study of semiotics uses examples from 25 iconic locations in the United States. From Coney Island to Las Vegas, the World Trade Center to the Grand Canyon, Berger shows how semiotics offers a different lens in understanding locations taken for granted in American culture. He recasts Disneyland according to Freud, channels the Mall of America through Baudrilliard, and sees the Washington Monument through the lens of Barthes. A seasoned author of student texts, Berger offers an entertaining, non-threatening way to teach theory to undergraduates and that will fit ideally in classes on cultural studies, American studies, social theory, and tourism."--Page 4 of cover

Description / Table of Contents: America Where? Transatlantic Views of the United States in the Twenty-first Century gathers essays by distinguished American Studies scholars from both sides of the Atlantic. The articles address changing representations of 'America' in their many and mutual transnational exchanges, both in the Americas and in Europe. Atlanticism, neo-liberalism, transnationalism, borders, racism, prisons, labor, war and intercultural relations compose the range of approaches to be found in this book. While paying close attention to the geopolitical, social, and cultural fabric of the United States as a nation in its intercultural, cross-border time-spaces, this work brings to question the location of 'America' in our time. How does this 'America' - both the material, secular nation in the economic and political world, and the mythical, sacred, and spiritual entity, enormously charged with symbolic power - present itself today in the Western and Eastern Hemispheres? The book's provisional answer is that the most productive «America» is to be found in the conversations that the cultures of the United States encourage and engage in, both nationally and internationally

Abstract: No concept has been more central to the emergence and evolution of identity studies than social justice. In historical and theoretical accounts, it crystallizes the progressive politics that have shaped the academic study of race, gender, and sexuality. Yet few scholars have deliberated directly on the political agency that notions of justice confer on critical practice. In Object Lessons, Robyn Wiegman contemplates this lack of attention, offering the first sustained inquiry into the political desire that galvanizes identity fields. In each chapter, she examines a key debate by considering the political aspirations that shape it. Addressing Women's Studies, she traces the ways that "gender" promises to overcome the exclusions of "women." Turning to Ethnic Studies, she examines the deconstruction of "whiteness" as an antiracist methodology. As she explores American Studies, she links internationalization to the broader quest for noncomplicity in contemporary criticism. Her analysis of Queer Studies demonstrates how the commitment to antinormativity normalizes the field. In the penultimate chapter, Wiegman addresses intersectionality as the most coveted theoretical approach to political resolution in all of these fields.

Abstract: In the global economy, linguistic diversity influences economic and political development as well as public policies in positive and negative ways. It leads to financial costs, communication barriers, divisions in national unity, and, in some extreme cases, conflicts and war--but it also produces benefits related to group and individual identity. What are the specific advantages and disadvantages of linguistic diversity and how does it influence social and economic progress? This book examines linguistic diversity as a global social phenomenon and considers what degree of linguistic variety mi.

Abstract: This book studies discourses and linguistic choices in both ex-colonized and ex-colonizer communities as each copes with the outcomes of colonialism. The construction of identities, the translation of religious texts, the discursive construction of nations, the use of indigenized varieties of colonial languages, and the emergence of diaspora communities are salient topics in postcolonial linguistics, and are treated here with great expertise by the authors. The book complements and expands upon traditional descriptions of multilingualism

Note: Includes bibliographical references and index , This monograph examines the ideological legacy of the metaphors, "mother tongue" and "native speaker," by historicizing their linguistic development. Early nation states constructed the ideology of ethnolinguistic nationalism, a composite of national language, identity, geography, and race that generated the philologies of (early) modernity and their genetic and arboreal "families" of languages. Enracination of language persists today. Scholarly recognition of the biological metaphors that racialize language will help to combat continued ethnolinguistic discrimination
