    Abstract: This open access textbook introduces and defines digital humanism from a diverse range of disciplines. Following the 2019 Vienna Manifesto, the book calls for a digital humanism that describes, analyzes, and, most importantly, influences the complex interplay of technology and humankind, for a better society and life, fully respecting universal human rights. The book is organized in three parts: Part I “Background” provides the multidisciplinary background needed to understand digital humanism in its philosophical, cultural, technological, historical, social, and economic dimensions. The goal is to present the necessary knowledge upon which an effective interdisciplinary discourse on digital humanism can be founded. Part II “Digital Humanism – a System’s View” focuses on an in-depth presentation and discussion of the main digital humanism concerns arising in current digital systems. The goal of this part is to make readers aware and sensitive to these issues, including e.g. the control and autonomy of AI systems, privacy and security, and the role of governance. Part III “Critical and Societal Issues of Digital Systems” delves into critical societal issues raised by advances of digital technologies. While the public debate in the past has often focused on them separately, especially when they became visible through sensational events the aim here is to shed light on the entire landscape and show their interconnected relationships. This includes issues such as AI and ethics, fairness and bias, privacy and surveillance, platform power and democracy. This textbook is intended for students, teachers, and policy makers interested in digital humanism. It is designed for stand-alone and for complementary courses in computer science, or curricula in science, engineering, humanities and social sciences. Each chapter includes questions for students and an annotated reading list to dive deeper into the associated chapter material. The book aims to provide readers with as wide an exposure as possible to digital advances and their consequences for humanity. It includes constructive ideas and approaches that seek to ensure that our collective digital future is determined through human agency

    Abstract: "Queering Desire" explores, with unprecedented interdisciplinary scope, contemporary configurations of lesbian, bi, queer women's and non-binary people's experiences of identity and desire. Taking an intersectional feminist approach and incorporating new and established identities such as non-binary, masculine of centre (MOC), butch and femme, this collection examines how the changing landscape for gender and sexual identities impacts on queer culture in productive and transformative ways. Within queer studies, explorations of desire, longing and eroticism have often neglected AFAB, transfeminine and non-binary people's experiences. Through twenty-five newly commissioned chapters, a diverse range of authors, from early career researchers to established scholars, stage conversations at the cutting edge of sexuality studies. Queering Desire advances our understanding of contemporary lesbian and queer desire from an inclusive perspective that is supportive of trans and non-binary identities.     Abstract: Biographical note: Gabriele Rosenthal ist emeritierte Professorin für Qualitative Methoden an der Sozialwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Göttingen.
    Abstract: Wie stellen Menschen die Ereignisse in ihrer Lebensgeschichte und der Geschichte ihrer Familie(n) dar, wenn sie davon erzählen? Wie stehen das Erzählen und das Erleben in der Gegenwart im Zusammenhang mit dem Erleben und dem Erzählen in der Vergangenheit? Dieses Buch beantwortet diese Fragen mit einer theoretisch-empirischen Untersuchung der gegenseitigen Wechselwirkungen von Erinnern, Erleben und der Präsentation des Erlebten zu verschiedenen Zeitpunkten eines Lebensverlaufs und der damit zusammenhängenden Verläufe der Kollektivgeschichten. Die Autorin greift in dieser mittlerweile klassischen Studie vor allem Ansätze der Phänomenologie sowie der Gestalttheorie auf – und in der Zeit seit der 1. Auflage (1995) zunehmend auch der Figurationssoziologie nach Norbert Elias. The book explores the potential of a research agenda which links narrower definitions of translation with broader notions of transfer, transmission, and relocation across temporal and cultural borders, investigating the nuanced theoretical and conceptual dimensions at the intersection of memory and translation. The volume explores memories of violent pasts legacies of war, genocide, dictatorship, and exile across different genres and media, including testimony, autobiography, novels, and graphic novels. The collection engages in central questions at the interface of these two areas of study, including whether traumatic historical experiences that resist representation can be translated, what happens when texts that negotiate such memories are translated into other languages and cultures, and what role translation strategies, translators, and agents of translations play in memory across borders. The volume will be of particular interest to students and scholars in translation studies, memory studies, and comparative literature"--

    Abstract: "The book follows the movements of the concept of "woman" from the Early modern to the post-colonial age, through the words of women who challenged its patriarchal definition. The concept of "woman" is doubly polemical. It affirms sexual difference as political difference, while denying the universal character of modern political concepts which represent the unity of the political and social order, exposing its fundamental division. At the same time, "woman" is a concept marked by differences - of race, class, culture - that continually redetermine its content. To make the history of the concept of "woman" is thus to affirm a different perspective on history itself, a partial perspective that lays the groundwork for the feminist critique of the present

The volume examines how anti-rape narratives, Feminichy scandals, #MeToo movements, and menstrual activisms, amongst a host of other performative feminist dissent and their discursive medialities create 'affective digital feminisms' which both break with and continue the residual and emergent practices within feminisms in India. It looks at digital womanspeak from India and focuses on vernacular forms of dissent, through which the author aims to decolonize feminist imaginaries from their moorings in the West. The author explores new digital, cultural, and social geographies where politically untamed women use their precarity to unsettle deep sexist structures and mount a gendered critique of the political economy of the nation state.     Abstract: "With the vast majority of healthcare and social workers identifying as women, the vanguard of the COVID-19 response was distinctly gendered. In Conscripted to Care, Julia Smith introduces us to the women who faced the worst effects of the pandemic and the inequities it exposed. Through clear prose and fascinating critical analysis, she documents their largely unseen contributions and sacrifices, both professionally and domestically. Drawing on interviews and focus groups with nearly 200 women from a range of backgrounds and occupations, Smith reveals how structural inequality put women on the frontlines of the pandemic response, yet with inadequate resources and little voice in decision-making. Women not only shouldered the triple burden of paid work, unpaid care, and mental load, but also increased emotional labour. While some women were categorized as "essential," others remained in the shadows--all faced unsustainable workloads, moral distress, and burnout, while continuing to demand better services for those in their care. An analysis of Canada's COVID-19 response from the perspective of those who staffed it, Conscripted to Care presents crucial lessons for those interested in public health and how it relates to gender and economic equality, as well as public policy."--

    Abstract: In the eighteenth century, the printing press enabled the rise of an independent press--the Fourth Estate--that helped check the power of governments, business, and industry. In similar ways, the internet is enabling the empowerment of a more independent collectivity of networked individuals--the Fifth Estate. Dutton uses estate theory to illuminate the most important power shift of the digital age. He argues that this network power shift is not only enabling greater democratic accountability in politics and governance but is also empowering networked individuals in their everyday life and work.

    Abstract: This book offers a new explanation of obedience and defiance in Milgram's lab. Examining one of the largest collections of Milgram's original audiotapes, Hollander and Turowetz scrutinize participant behavior in not only the experiments themselves, but also recordings of the subsequent debriefing interviews in which participants were asked to reflect on their actions. Introducing an original theoretical framework in the sociology of morality, they show that, contrary to traditional understandings of Milgram's experiments that highlight obedience, virtually all subjects, both compliant and defiant, mobilized practices to resist the authority's commands.     Abstract: "People looking for entertainment in Cincinnati in 1856 had many options. Choices ranged from high culture to shows barely above the level of the tawdry. Among their options that summer was a "Wild Woman" display, which purported to exhibit a young woman captured while living a feral life beyond the US frontier. The show consisted of an uncommunicative woman clothed in rags chained to a bed. It was almost assuredly a hoax. Nevertheless, the exhibitor's tale used a fascination with the frontier and the idea of "whiteness in danger" to appeal to enough people to keep the show open for over two months. It ended at the behest of local activist women who used their influence to prompt a Cincinnati judge to examine the exhibit. The court then used force to subdue, render unconscious, and undress the Wild Woman before several male doctors, who advised her admission to an asylum. The judge then declared her insane.
    Abstract: She remained silent throughout the ordeal, leaving doctors to invent a series of rather bizarre and decidedly gendered case histories to explain her mental incapacitation. In his fascinating history of the "Wild Woman," Michael Pierson uses the exhibit and its captive female to explain a great deal about the United States in 1856, especially the importance of gender to understand political allegiances and access to power. The divisive politics of the era led to much disagreement among patrons about the silent woman. Democrats and Republicans saw different women when they looked at her. They could not agree on who she was, what she meant, or what they should do with her. Partisan editors, judges, and doctors projected their own ideas about women and men onto the blank screen of the mute woman and revealed themselves as well as the divided nature of their country. They also repeatedly demonstrated how much power men had over women in the process.
    Abstract: As much as this is a story about the looming civil war, it is also about the nascent woman's rights movement and the necessity of women's political and social empowerment. The Wild Woman of Cincinnati took on many meanings during her moment as a star, but all of them come back to the harsh reality that the city and the nation allowed the exhibitor to "own" her as his "pet" and to display her without any evidence that she had granted consent"--
