    Kurzfassung: "Citizenship is a fantasy of political community without others. How is it faring in today's world of authoritarianism, failed states, and climate crisis? In a world where democratic experiment is, by now, a networked and global proposition? What might we learn from music - and from ethnomusicology? The relationship between the idea of citizenship and music is long-standing, but it has not yet been looked at from a perspective informed by postcolonialism and today's decolonizing debates. The case studies in this volume are, consequently, drawn from across Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe. Its first chapter locates the current ethnomusicological interest in citizenship in broad critical landscape, focusing on approaches to audience, media, voice and performance. The second surveys a growing body of recent ethnomusicological literature on citizenship, theorized in terms of identity, technocracy, and intimacy. The third comprises case studies developing an approach to citizenship and political subjectivity beyond conventional liberal categories, defined by mobility ('the citizen on his bike'), collectivity ('the citizen in the crowd') and activism ('the citizen in the square'). The conclusion offers an argument about the implications for citizenship studies of today's thinking in ethnomusicology, musicology and sound studies, reflecting on the hardening rhetoric of political belonging in Europe."

    Kurzfassung: "Focused on research within Africa and the African diaspora, contributors to this volume think through the painful iterations of trauma, systemic racism, and the vestiges of colonial oppression as well as the processes of healing and emancipation that emerge from wounded states. Their chapters explore an acoustemology of intimacy, woman-centered eroticism generated through musical performance, desire and longing in ethnographic knowledge production, and listening as intimacy. On the other end of the spectrum, authors engage with and question the fetishization of race in jazz; examine conceptions of vulgarity and profanity in movement and dance-ethnography; and address pain, trauma, and violation, whether physical, spiritual, intellectual, or political. Authors in this volume strive toward empathetic, ethical, and creative ethnographic engagements that summon vulnerability and healing. They propose pathways to aesthetic, discursive transformation by reorienting conceptions of knowledge as emergent, performative, and sonically enabled. The resulting book explores sensory knowledge that is frequently left unacknowledged in ethnographic work, advancing conversations about performed sonic and somatic modalities through which we navigate our entanglements as engaged scholars"--

    Kurzfassung: This Element demonstrates how a combination of stimulated recall and collaborative autoethnographic strategies can be applied to artistic and scholarly work at the intersection of ethnomusicology and practice-led-research. The authors relate recently collected material from fieldwork in Vietnam to the long-term method development within the Vietnamese/Swedish group The Six Tones, of which three authors are the founding members. The discussion centers around the inter-subjective forms of stimulated recall analysis, developed through the creative work of this innovative intercultural music ensemble. The aim of this Element is to create a decolonized methodology-for both music performance and research-and it provides a detailed account of this method development starting in 2006. Furthermore, the authors discuss how this practice was successfully shared with three master performers in the south of Vietnam as part of a collaborative project in 2018-2019

    Kurzfassung: "During the early medieval Islamicate period (800-1400 CE), discourses concerned with music and musicians were wide-ranging and contentious, and expressed in works on music theory and philosophy as well as literature and poetry. But in spite of attempts by influential scholars and political leaders to limit or control musical expression, music and sound permeated all layers of the social structure. Lisa Nielson here presents a rich social history of music, musicianship and the role of musicians in the early Islamicate era. Focusing primarily on Damascus, Baghdad and Jerusalem, Lisa Nielson draws on a wide variety of textual sources written for and about musicians and their professional/private environments -- including chronicles, literary sources, memoirs and musical treatises -- as well as the disciplinary approaches of musicology to offer insights into musical performances and the lives of musicians. In the process, the book sheds light onto the dynamics of medieval Islamicate courts, as well as how slavery, gender, status and religion intersected with music in courtly life. It will appeal to scholars of the Islamicate world and historical musicologists."--

    Kurzfassung: Anfang der 1920er Jahre erreichte Jazzmusik Europa und verbreitete sich innerhalb kürzester Zeit durch Hörensagen, amerikanische Musikerinnen und Musiker und später auch Schallplatten in Deutschland. Die Musik wirbelte das kulturelle Leben und seine Diskurse in einem Maße auf, dass die kulturelle Elite um den Fortbestand der europäischen musikalischen Traditionen bangte: Jazz wurde einerseits vehement abgelehnt und andererseits euphorisch begrüßt und als Ausdruck von Freiheit verstanden.Dieser "Jazzaufprall" in den Jahren zwischen 1924 und 1929 wird in der Studie anhand von zeitgenössischen Betrachtungen beleuchtet: Was passierte mit den unterschiedlichen Dimensionen des Stadtlebens? Wie wurden die fremde Kultur und die Musik in die bestehenden kulturellen Szenen eingeordnet? Und inwiefern konstruierten sich in Berlin durch diesen internationalen Einfluss neue Facetten einer urbanen Identität?

    Kurzfassung: "Gold, Festivals, and Music in Southeast Brazil: Sounding Portugueseness is a study of the musical legacy of the 18th century Brazilian gold rush that integrates ethnographic research of the main genres of former mining communities in Brazil -- from liturgical music in the style of European art music to Afro-Brazilian musical expressions. Its content and structure are informed by Norbert Elias' idea of the civilizing process, which is explored regarding its relevance in interpreting sociocultural processes and choreo-musical expressions in the small town Morro Vermelho. The book's innovative feature is its focus on a little-known area to non-Brazilian scholars,and its focus on the colonial and European heritage in Brazil. Morro Vermelho's cultural traditions have received relatively limited attention. The Catholic festival of Our Lady of Nazareth provides a setting for the documentation and analysis of the musical setting and is thus placed at the centre of the discussion. It leads through the vast writings on Brazilian identity and challenges the view on Brazilian-ness as constructed in terms of the mixing of races. Norbert Elias's concept of the "civilizing process" structures the book and is relevant for understanding the cultural sphere of the festival of Our Lady of Nazareth. The book combines discourses of Portugueseness with historical sources and observations from fieldwork and community building in the virtual world. The focus on the music to support social constructions of "Portugueseness" is supported with evidence from diverse data sources: music (literature and fieldwork recordings), original interviews, marketing materials and historical narratives. The combination of archival, ethnographic and bibliographic research methods attempts a seamless narrative.     Kurzfassung: 〈i〉Music Scenes and Migrations〈/i〉 brings together new work from Brazilian and European scholars around the themes of musical place and transnationalism across the Atlantic triangle connecting Brazil, Africa and Europe. Moving beyond now-contested models for conceptualizing international musical relations and hierarchies of powers and influence, such as global/local or centre/periphery, the volume draws attention instead to the role of the city, and in particular, in producing, signifying and mediating music-making in the colonial and post-colonial Portuguese-speaking world. In considering the roles played by cities as hubs of cultural intersection, socialization, exchange and transformation; as sites of political intervention and contestation; and as homes to large concentrations of consumers, technologies and media, Rio de Janeiro necessarily figures prominently, given its historical importance as an international port at the centre of the Lusophone Atlantic world. The volume also gives attention to other urban centres, within Brazil and abroad, towards which musicians and musical traditions have migrated and converged - such as São Paulo, Lisbon and Madrid - where they have reinvented themselves; where notions of Brazilian and Lusophone identity have been reconfigured; and where independent, peripheral and underground scenes have contested the hegemony of the musical 'mainstream'. 〈br〉〈br〉The contributions to the volume are grouped according to three key thematic areas: Colonial and post-Colonial transnationalisms, migrations and diasporas; relocating Rio de Janeiro; and demetropolitanizing the musical city: other scenes, industries, technologies

    Anmerkung: Combining approaches from reception studies and historical musicology, this book demonstrates how the representation of music at exhibitions drew the press and public into debates about music's role in society. International exhibitions were among the most significant cultural phenomena of the late nineteenth century. These vast events aimed to illustrate, through displays of physical objects, the full spectrum of the world's achievements, from industry and manufacturing, to art and design. But exhibitions were not just visual spaces. Music was ever present, as a fundamental part of these events' sonic landscape, and integral to the visitor experience. This book explores music at international exhibitions held in Australia, India, and the United Kingdom during the 1880s. At these exhibitions, music was codified, ordered, and all-round 'exhibited' in manifold ways. Displays of physical instruments from the past and present were accompanied by performances intended to educate or to entertain, while music was heard at exhibitors' stands, in concert halls, and in the pleasure gardens that surrounded the exhibition buildings. Music was depicted as a symbol of human artistic achievement, or employed for commercial ends. At times it was presented in nationalist terms, at others as a marker of universalism. This book argues, by interrogating the multiple ways that music was used, experienced, and represented, that exhibitions can demonstrate in microcosm many of the broader musical traditions, purposes, arguments, and anxieties of the day. Its nine chapters focus on sociocultural themes, covering issues of race, class, public education, economics, and entertainment in the context of music, tracing these through the networks of communication that existed within the British Empire at the time

    Kurzfassung: "Republicans and Democrats increasingly distrust, avoid, and wish harm upon those from the other party. To make matters worse, they also increasingly reside among like-minded others and are part of social groups that share their political beliefs. All of this can make expressing a dissenting political opinion hard. Yet digital and social media have given people new spaces for political discourse and community, and more control over who knows their political beliefs and who does not. With Democracy Lives in Darkness, Van Duyn looks at what these changes in the political and media landscape mean for democracy. She uncovers and follows a secret political organization in rural Texas over the entire Trump presidency. The group, which organized out of fear of their conservative community in 2016, has a confidentiality agreement, an email listserv and secret Facebook group, and meets in secret every month. By building relationships with members, she explores how and why they hide their beliefs and what this does for their own political behavior and for their community. Drawing on research from communication, political science, and sociology along with survey data on secret political expression, she finds that polarization has led even average partisans to hide their political beliefs from others. And although intensifying polarization will likely make political secrecy more common, she argues that this secrecy is not just evidence that democracy is hurting, but that it is still alive; that people persist in the face of opposition and that this matters if democracy is to survive"--

In street dances, recording sessions, and global genres such as the riddim, notions of originality include reliance on shared knowledge and authorship as an interactive practice. It examines the debates over language among the elite of this region during a period of extraordinary social and political change in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Language debates closely reflect power relations among different sections of society, such as those delineated by nation, ethnicity, region, religion, caste, class, and gender. They are intimately linked with the process by which individuals and groups of people try to define and project themselves in response to changing political, economic, and social environments. Based on rich historical sources, including official records, periodicals, literary texts, memoirs, and private papers, this book vividly shows the impact that colonialism, nationalism, and the process of nation-building had on the ideas of language among different groups, as well as how various ideas of language competed and negotiated with each other.     Kurzfassung: "Republicans and Democrats increasingly distrust, avoid, and wish harm upon those from the other party. To make matters worse, they also increasingly reside among like-minded others and are part of social groups that share their political beliefs. All of this can make expressing a dissenting political opinion hard. Yet digital and social media have given people new spaces for political discourse and community, and more control over who knows their political beliefs and who does not. With Democracy Lives in Darkness, Van Duyn looks at what these changes in the political and media landscape mean for democracy. She uncovers and follows a secret political organization in rural Texas over the entire Trump presidency. The group, which organized out of fear of their conservative community in 2016, has a confidentiality agreement, an email listserv and secret Facebook group, and meets in secret every month. By building relationships with members, she explores how and why they hide their beliefs and what this does for their own political behavior and for their community. Drawing on research from communication, political science, and sociology along with survey data on secret political expression, she finds that polarization has led even average partisans to hide their political beliefs from others. And although intensifying polarization will likely make political secrecy more common, she argues that this secrecy is not just evidence that democracy is hurting, but that it is still alive; that people persist in the face of opposition and that this matters if democracy is to survive"--

    Kurzfassung: Der Kalte Krieg wurde kälter, der Kampf um die politisch-ideologische Lufthoheit zwischen Ost und West heftiger. Aber zugleich geschah in den späten 70ern und 80ern Erstaunliches. Der deutsch-deutsche Kulturaustausch geriet heftig in Bewegung - ausgerechnet in dem Bereich, der als besonders sensibel galt: der Pop- und Rockmusik. DDR-Bands wie City, Pankow und Puhdys wurden erstmals auf BRD-Tour geschickt, Karat traten bei "Wetten, dass...?" auf, ließen Hunderttausende von West-Mark nach Ost-Berlin fließen. Im Gegenzug durften Westkünstler wie Udo Lindenberg, Peter Maffay und Rio Reiser in der DDR spielen, rockten Die Toten Hosen semilegal in Ostkirchen. Es ging um Propaganda und Devisen, versteckte Botschaften, politische Manöver. Joachim Hentschel erzählt hier zum ersten Mal die ganze Geschichte dieser Zeit, spricht mit Zeitzeugen und beleuchtet die Hintergründe: Wer waren die Strippenzieher?     Kurzfassung: Der Sammelband stellt die Frage nach den Erscheinungsformen und Ausdrucksweisen des Antisemitismus in der Musik. Als „negative Leitidee der Moderne“ ist Antisemitismus in sämtlichen Musikrichtungen zu finden und wird auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen vermittelt: sei es durch Songtexte, Albumcover, Musikvideos, Bühnenauftritte, durch die Musikform bzw. des Stils an sich oder die ideologische und strukturelle Einbindung von Musiker:innen in die extrem rechte Szene bis hin zur Beeinflussung ganzer Musikszenen durch die antisemitische BDS-Kampagne. In den Aufsätzen geben die Autor:innen daher einen Überblick zu aktuellen Entwicklungen und liefern Analysen und Einschätzungen zu den mannigfaltigen antisemitischen Verstrickungen in der Musik. Mit Beiträgen von Lukas Geck, Maria Kanitz, Annica Peter, Jan Schäfer, Jakob Baier, Kai E. Schubert, Niels Penke, Marcus Stiglegger, Timo Büchner, Melanie Hermann, Marc Grimm, Nico Unkelbach, Nicholas Potter, Nathalie Friedländer, Tom D. Uhlig.
    Kurzfassung: This anthology addresses the question of how anti-Semitism appears and is expressed in modern music. As a ‘negative guiding idea of modernity’, anti-Semitism can be found in all musical genres and is conveyed on different levels, be it through song lyrics, album covers, music videos, stage performances, through the musical form or style itself, or the ideological and structural integration of musicians into the extreme rightwing scene, all the way to the influence of entire music scenes through the anti-Semitic BDS campaign. In the essays in this book, the authors therefore give an overview of current develop-ments and provide analyses and assessments of the manifold anti-Semitic manifestations in music.     Kurzfassung: "The Musical Heritage of Al-Andalus is a critical account of the history of Andalusian music in Iberia from the Islamic conquest of 711 to the final expulsion of the Moriscos (Spanish Muslims converted to Christianity) in the early 17th century. This volume presents the documentation that has come down to us, accompanied by critical and detailed analyses of the sources written in Arabic, Old Catalan, Castilian, Hebrew, and Latin. It is also informed by research the author has conducted on modern Andalusian musical traditions in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon and Syria. While the cultural achievements of medieval Muslim Spain have been the topic of a large number of scholarly and popular publications in recent decades, what may arguably be its most enduring contribution – music – has been almost entirely neglected. The overarching purpose of this work is to elucidate as clearly as possible the many different types of musical interactions that took place in medieval Iberia and the complexity of the various borrowings, adaptations, hybridizations, and appropriations involved"--

    Kurzfassung: "A major common misconception in scholarship on Kurdish journalistic discourses is that Kurdish intellectuals of the late Ottoman period cannot be portrayed as Kurdish nationalists. This theory prevails because of the belief that they not only endorsed and promoted Pan-Islamism and Ottoman nationalism instead of Kurdish ethnic nationalism, but also because they allegedly eschewed political demands and instead concerned themselves with ethno-cultural issues to articulate forms of ?Kurdism? rather than ?Kurdish nationalism.?00Refuting this underlying misconstruction of the nexus between Pan-Islamism, Ottomanism, and Kurdish nationalism, this book argues, based on empirical findings, that the Kurdish periodicals of the late Ottoman period served as a communicative space in which Kurdish intellectuals negotiated and disseminated an unmistakable form of Kurdish nationalism. It claims that hegemonic Ottomanist and Pan-Islamist political thought were used in pragmatic ways in the service of burgeoning Kurdish nationalism, but were rejected altogether when they were no longer useful to fostering Kurdish nationalism"--Page four of cover

    Kurzfassung: "During the early medieval Islamicate period (800-1400 CE), discourses concerned with music and musicians were wide-ranging and contentious, and expressed in works on music theory and philosophy as well as literature and poetry. But in spite of attempts by influential scholars and political leaders to limit or control musical expression, music and sound permeated all layers of the social structure. Lisa Nielson here presents a rich social history of music, musicianship and the role of musicians in the early Islamicate era. Focusing primarily on Damascus, Baghdad and Jerusalem, Lisa Nielson draws on a wide variety of textual sources written for and about musicians and their professional/private environments -- including chronicles, literary sources, memoirs and musical treatises -- as well as the disciplinary approaches of musicology to offer insights into musical performances and the lives of musicians. In the process, the book sheds light onto the dynamics of medieval Islamicate courts, as well as how slavery, gender, status and religion intersected with music in courtly life. It will appeal to scholars of the Islamicate world and historical musicologists."
