    Abstract: Die zahlreichen Schicksale der Verfolgten des Nationalsozialismus sind faktenreich belegt, stehen aber im Spannungsfeld zur regionalen Erinnerungskultur nach 1945. Was bedeuten diese Spannungen heute? Maria Anna Willer untersucht Strukturen und Prozesse der Ausgrenzung in der Face-to-Face-Gesellschaft eines Dorfes am bayrischen Alpenrand zur Zeit der NS-Herrschaft und beleuchtet dessen Erinnerungskultur. In Anlehnung an Foucault beschreibt sie im Modell eines »Dispositivs der NS-Verfolgung« die engmaschigen Strukturen der Kontrolle und Überwachung sowie Widerstand und Hilfeleistungen als Kategorien der NS-Diktatur auf dem Dorf. Es zeigt sich: Nach 1945 ist eine Kontinuität der Ausgrenzung erkennbar, wenn die Erinnerung an Opfer der NS-Verfolgung verdrängt wird.

At a time of intensified interest in issues of race and racism, the burgeoning influence of corporations like AncestryDNA and 23andMe has sparked debates about the commodification of identity, the antiracist potential of genetic science, and the promises and pitfalls of using DNA as a source of 'objective' knowledge about the past. This book engages these debates by looking at the ways genomic ancestry testing has been used in Brazil and the United States to address the histories and legacies of slavery, from personal genealogical projects to collective racial politics.

    Abstract: Dieser Band enthält fünf Abhandlungen zur Geschichte, ethnologischen Konnotation, ästhetischen Hochbewertung, ökonomischen Veränderung und Neuentdeckung von traditioneller beziehungsweise vernakularer ruraler Architektur. Die Beiträge behandeln historische Siedlungsgebiete mit deutschsprachigen Minderheiten im ostmitteleuropäischen und osteuropäischen Raum. Es wird versucht nachzuzeichnen, auf welche Weise die historisch gebauten Bauern-, Hirten- oder Fischerhäuser ausgestattet wurden, wo und warum sie in der akademischen Bildungssphäre einen ästhetischen und repräsentativen Wert zugesprochen erhielten, wie ihre Verdrängung während der Epoche des Sozialismus vor sich ging und wann sie unter neuen wirtschaftlichen und lebensweltlichen Prämissen als temporäre oder auch dauerhafte Wohngebäude neu entdeckt wurden. Die Wiederentdeckung bzw. Neubelebung erfolgte und erfolgt aktuell unter verschiedenen Aspekten. Neben das Motiv der Erhaltung des Erbes der Minderheitenkulturen und seiner nichtmusealen Identitätspräsentation treten nun die Nachhaltigkeitseffekte der Bauweise mit lokal-/regionaltypischen Materialien und Handwerkstechniken (etwa Holzbauweise) sowie eine im Computerzeitalter neugewonnene Attraktivität des ländlich-ruhigen Wohnens in den Vordergrund.     Abstract: Im Anschluss an bisherige Forschungen zu Heimatzeitschriften der Deutschen in und aus dem östlichen Europa am IVDE Freiburg rückten in den letzten Jahren Fragestellungen zu ihrer visuellen Gestaltung ins Blickfeld. Erste Untersuchungen waren der Gestaltung von Titelseiten, medienspezifischen Werbeanzeigen oder beteiligten Akteuren gewidmet. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes nähern sich dieser Thematik an und ergänzen bisherige Ergebnisse mit neuen Aspekten. Neben Überlegungen zu Brüchen und Kontinuitäten bei der visuellen Konstruktion von Periodika, die an Vorgängerzeitschriften in den Herkunftsgebieten anknüpften, werden Bildmotive, Bild-Text-Bezüge und unterschiedliche Deutungskontexte bei Kunstwerken und Fotografien diskutiert. Weitere Beiträge erörtern ausgewählte Gesichtspunkte der Geschichte der Fotografie in den Ländern der Böhmischen Krone und der Bildmotive in der Amateurfotografie vor 1945 sowie die Reproduktion solcher Aufnahmen in Heimatzeitschriften nach 1945. Auch Fragen der frühen fotografischen Reportage in den 1950er-Jahren und des fotografischen Blickes von Heimatreisenden werden beleuchtet. Ein Bericht über die Neuerungen des Online-Handbuchs Heimatpresse sowie der Fotografen- und Künstlerdatenbank schließt den Sammelband ab.Mit Beiträgen von Elisabeth Fendl, Bernadette Gebhardt, Michael Hirschfeld, Petr Karlíček, Sandra Kreisslová, Hans-Werner Retterath, Jiří Riezner und Pavel Scheufler.

    Abstract: Pollsters and pundits armed with the best public opinion polls failed to predict the election of Donald Trump in 2016. Is this because we no longer understand what the American public is? In this book, Susan Herbst argues that we need to return to earlier meanings of 'public opinion' to understand our current climate. Herbst contends that the idea that there was a public - whose opinions mattered - emerged during the Great Depression, with the diffusion of radio, the devastating impact of the economic collapse on so many people, the appearance of professional pollsters, and Franklin Roosevelt's powerful rhetoric. She argues that public opinion about issues can only be seen as a messy mixture of culture, politics, and economics - in short, all the things that influence how people live.

    Abstract: Venedig und sein Karneval waren in der Vormoderne für Reisende aus ganz Europa ein großer Anziehungspunkt. Nach dem Untergang der Republik 1797 verlor das Fest allerdings an Bedeutung. Erst am Ende der 1970er-Jahre kam es zu einer dauerhaften und öffentlichkeitswirksamen Wiederbelebung dieser Veranstaltung. Die vorliegende Studie rekonstruiert die Geschichte des venezianischen Karnevals und beleuchtet dabei insbesondere die jüngsten Entwicklungstendenzen. Auf der Grundlage eines mehrjährigen Beobachtungsprozesses wird die Relevanz des Festes für die Stadtbewohner thematisiert, seine touristische Vermarktung beschrieben sowie seine Inszenierung als (post)modernes Event analysiert.

Mit diesen Ansätzen sowie der Rekonstruktion widerständiger Praktiken wird nicht nur die Analyse und Kritik vergangener, sondern auch gegenwärtig dominanter Diskurse über Flucht und Migration eröffnet.

Welche Maßnahmen wurden damals ergriffen, um die Vielsitzer mit ihren Wohlstandsbäuchen zum Sporttreiben zu animieren? Mit welchen Werten wurde ein solcher Sport für alle von nun an verbunden? Im Zusammenspiel unterschiedlicher Quellengruppen wird in der vorliegenden Studie der Versuch unternommen, diese einst von großer medialer Aufmerksamkeit begleitete Aktion zu rekonstruieren und in ihrer Bedeutung für die Entwicklung des Freizeitsports in der 2.     Abstract: This book uncovers an unfamiliar vision of political violence that nonetheless prevailed in modern French thought: that through "redemptive violence" the people would not rend but regenerate society. It homes in on invocations of popular redemptive violence across four historical moments in France specifically: the French Revolution, Algeria's colonization, the Paris Commune, and the eve of the first World War. In each of these cases, the book reveals how French thinkers experienced democratization as social disintegration. Yet, before such danger, they also proclaimed that virtuous violence by the people could repair the social fabric. The path leading from an anarchic multitude to an organized democratic society required, not violence's prohibition, but its virtuous expression by the people.

    Abstract: Licia do Prado Valladares's classic anthropological study of Brazil's vast, densely populated urban living environments reveals how the idea of the favela became an internationally establishedand even attractive and exoticrepresentation of poverty. The study traces how the term 'favela' emerged as an analytic category beginning in the mid-1960s, showing how it became the object of immense popular debate and sustained social science research. But the concept of the favela so favored by social scientists is not, Valladares argues, a straightforward reflection of its social reality, and it often obscures more than it reveals.The established representation of favelas undercuts more complex, accurate, and historicized explanations of Brazilian development. It marks and perpetuates favelas as zones of exception rather than as integral to Brazil's modernization over the past century.

    Abstract: Considering yodeling as a musical device in American music, this text investigates in parallel two ways of understanding various meanings associated with yodeling: as the connotative functions of yodeling within specific musical texts and as the ideological implications of its use. It aims to provoke a reflection on the concept of singing and received cultural ideas associated with it. Starting with the premise that music is a discursive practice that is itself inseparable from a critical verbal discourse about music, the work interrogates the relationship between yodeling and predominating musical orthodoxy. Through a critical examination of that relationship, the book explores numerous examples of yodeling in American music, questioning why it achieved prominence and status in some genres and not in others and attempting to account for the relatively low prestige accorded to music featuring yodeling.

    Abstract: In 2007, while researching mountain culture in upstate South Carolina, anthropologist John M. Coggeshall stumbled upon the small community of Liberia in the Blue Ridge foothills. There he met Mable Owens Clarke and her family, the remaining members of a small African American community still living on land obtained immediately after the Civil War. This intimate history tells the story of five generations of the Owens family and their friends and neighbors, chronicling their struggles through slavery, Reconstruction, the Jim Crow era, and the desegregation of the state. Through hours of interviews with Mable and her relatives, as well as friends and neighboyrs, Coggeshall presents an ethnographic history that allows members of a largely ignored community to speak and record their own history for the first time.

    Abstract: Since 2004, the Baby Doll Mardi Gras tradition in New Orleans has gone from an obscure, almost-forgotten practice to a flourishing cultural force. The original Baby Dolls were groups of black women, & some men, in the early Jim Crow era who adopted New Orleans street-masking tradition as a unique form of fun & self-expression against a backdrop of racial discrimination. Wearing short dresses, bloomers, bonnets, & garters with money tucked tight, they strutted, sang ribald songs, chanted, & danced on Mardi Gras Day & on St. Joseph feast night. Today's Baby Dolls continue the tradition of one of the first street women's masking & marching groups in the United States. They joyfully & unabashedly defy gender roles, claiming public space & proclaiming through their performance their right to social citizenship.

    Abstract: 'Aloha' is at once the most significant and the most misunderstood word in the indigenous Hawaiian lexicon. For Kanaka Maoli people, the concept of 'aloha' is a representation and articulation of their identity, despite its misappropriation and commandeering by non-native audiences in the form of things like the 'hula girl' of popular culture. Considering the way aloha is embodied, performed, and interpreted in native Hawaiian literature, music, plays, dance, drag performance, and even ghost tours from the twentieth century to the present, Stephanie Nohelani Teves shows that misunderstanding of the concept by non-native audiences has not prevented the Kanaka Maoli from using it to create and empower community and articulate its distinct Indigenous meaning.

As with the birth of photography, digital reproduction has created new possibilities for the duplication and consumption of images, offering greater dissemination and access. But digital reproduction has also stoked new anxieties concerning authenticity and ownership. From this contemporary vantage point, 'After Uniqueness' traces the ambivalence of reproducibility through the intersecting histories of experimental cinema and the moving image in art, examining how artists, filmmakers, and theorists have found in the copy a utopian promise or a dangerous inauthenticity - or both at once.

Bringing together Jewish cultural studies, examining how Jews have negotiated Jew-Gentile difference, and critical animal studies, analyzing the functions served by asserting human-animal difference, this monograph focuses on the writings of primarily Germanophone authors, including Sigmund Freud, Heinrich Heine, Franz Kafka, Gertrud Kolmar, H. Leivick, Felix Salten, and Curt Siodmak. It ferrets out of their nonhuman-animal constructions their responses to the bestial answers upon which the Jewish and animal questions converged and by which varieties of the species 'Jew' were depicted.

    Abstract: Die Geschichte der europäischen Expansion und Kolonialisierung kann ohne den Rückgriff auf Lastenträger nicht vorgestellt werden: Sie waren es, die das räumliche Vordringen europäischer Entdecker überhaupt ermöglichten. Alle Kontinente waren vom Trägerwesen betroffen, doch über das Schicksal der Träger_innen selbst ist bisher wenig bekannt. Die internationale Beiträgerschaft des Bandes verschränkt kultur-, medien- und sozialgeschichtliche Fragestellungen und dokumentiert erstmals die zentrale Rolle, die den Träger_innen in ökonomischer, politischer und gesellschaftlicher Hinsicht zukam.

    Abstract: The fiery transformation of the dead is replete in our popular culture and Western modernity's death ways, and yet it is increasingly evident how little this disposal method is understood by archaeologists and students of cognate disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. In this regard, the archaeological study of cremation has much to offer. Cremation is a fascinating and widespread theme and entry-point in the exploration of the variability of mortuary practices among past societies. Seeking to challenge simplistic narratives of cremation in the past and present, the studies in this volume seek to confront and explore the challenges of interpreting the variability of cremation by contending with complex networks of modern allusions and imaginings of cremations past and present and ongoing debates regarding how we identify and interpret cremation in the archaeological record.     Abstract: How the International Committee of the Red Cross emerged triumphant from the dark days of World War II - to forge a new identity and a new role in the post-1945 world. The intriguing and remarkable story of one of the world's oldest, most prominent, and most revered aid institutions - and how it survived its ambiguous relationship with the Nazis. From the brink of dissolution in 1945 to the triumph of the Geneva Conventions in 1949, a tale encompassing the Nuremberg Trials, runaway Nazis, and furious battles with Communist critics on the eve of the Cold War. Torn between defending Swiss neutrality and battling Communist critics in the early Cold War, the Red Cross leadership in Geneva emerged from the world war with a new commitment to protecting civilians caught in the crossfire of conflict. Yet they did so while interfering with Allied de-nazification efforts in Germany and elsewhere, and coming to the defence of former Nazis at the Nuremberg Trials.     Abstract: Suffering and Happiness in England 1550-1850 pays tribute to one of the leading historians working on early modern England, Paul Slack, and his work as a historian, and enters into discussion with the rapidly growing body of work on the 'history of emotions'. The themes of suffering and happiness run through Paul Slack's publications; the first being more prominent in his early work on plague and poverty, the second in his more recent work on conceptualframeworks for social thought and action. Though he has not himself engaged directly with the history of emotions, assembling essays on these themes provides an opportunity to do that.     Abstract: Although Herodot's dictum that "Egypt is a gift of the Nile" is proverbial, there has been only scant attention to the way the river impacted on ancient Egyptian society. Egyptologists frequently focus on the textual and iconographic record, whereas archaeologists and earth scientists approach the issue from the perspective of natural sciences. The contributions in this volume bridge this gap by analyzing the river both as a natural and as a cultural phenomenon. Adopting an approach of cultural ecology, it addresses issues like ancient land use, administration and taxation, irrigation, and religious concepts.
