Abstract: Constructing Motherhood and Daughterhood Across the Lifespan explores the complex dynamics between mother and daughter over the lifespan. The editors believe that these vital family roles are socially and communicatively constructed, shaped, and molded as mothers and daughters navigate, respond to, and negotiate cultural and familial discourses. Aimed at undergraduate students, this timely book includes course activities and discussion questions in every chapter and a complete term syllabus to enhance a professor’s teaching, providing a smooth route for adoption as a course text. The book also builds on and contributes to the critical and theoretical research in family communication, media studies, and gender studies, delving into the nuanced communication surrounding motherhood and daughterhood in the United States.
Abstract: “This trailblazing book is unparalleled on the current market. This highly-accessible compilation deftly translates cutting-edge research on mother-daughter communication for the undergraduate and graduate classroom. The inquiry-based format of the imminently readable chapters invites students into researchers’ processes of discovery and meaning-making. Moreover, this volume pedagogically advances the communication discipline. Based on fifteen years of teaching experience, the final chapter provides an invaluable guide for instructors interested in developing their own courses on mother-daughter communication. I heartily recommend this text!”Elizabeth A. Suter, Director of Graduate Teaching Instructors, University of Denver...
Abstract: “In this volume, editors Allison M. Alford and Michelle Miller-Day and the chapter authors explore communication and negotiating mother-daughter dyads in a breadth of family types and across all points in the lifespan. This insightful array of chapters points to the centrality of daughters and mothers in the network of primary and external family relationships and the different challenges of family identity and enactment from parenting, to navigating change, to later years as families, and often daughters, provide care for family members. Editors Alford and Miller-Day share a goal of stimulating courses focused on the topic and end the volume with practical resources as a starting point. Whether adopting the book for a whole course or a specialization within a family course, this collection will be a treasure for students, scholars, and practitioners.”Dawn O. Braithewaite, Ph.D., Willa Cather Professor of Communication Studies and Chair, University of Nebraska-Lincoln...
Abstract: “This book offers important insights that illustrate the significance of how mothers and daughters interface with each other. Often, books either emphasize the mother’s point of view or concentrate on the daughters’ perspective in relation to the mothers. This book, crafted by Allison M. Alford and Michelle Miller-Day, gives the reader a different vantage point to understand a complicated relationship between mothers and daughters. The authors advocate for examining motherhood and daughterhood as socially constructed.“The perspective Alford and Miller-Day ascribe allows fluidity in the way relationships between and among mothers and daughters are defined. Through the element of communication, the authors illustrate the meaning of motherhood and daughterhood across the lifespan.“To accomplish these goals, the book presents a number of contexts that reflect multiple aspects of change and recalibration of mother-daughter relationships in everyday life. For example, this book helps readers consider outside influences such as the significance of media representation of mothers and daughters and new technologies. They identify life issues such as coping with pregnancy and disabilities, as well as navigating difficult conversations such as sexuality and stages of life.“Overall, this book is rich with insights that are easily assessable and clear about the way communication functions to yield a better understanding of the mother-daughter relationship. This is a must-read for the general public and for researchers interested in this area of inquiry.”Sandra Petronio, Director, Communication Privacy Management Center; Senior Affiliate Faculty, Charles Warren Fairbanks Center for Medical Ethics; Professor, Department of Communication Studies, School of Liberal Arts, Indiana University – Purdue University, Indianapolis; National Communication Association Distinguished Scholar...

Abstract: African American Studies: The Discipline and Its Dimensions is a comprehensive resource book that recounts the development of the discipline of African American Studies and provides a basic reference source for sixteen areas of knowledge of the discipline: anthropology, art, dance, economics, education, film, history, literature, music, philosophy, psychology, religion, sociology, political science, science and technology, sports and religion. African American Studies defines bodies of knowledge, methodologies, philosophies, disciplinary concepts, contents, scope, topics scholars have concerned themselves, as well as the growth, development, and present status of the discipline. African American Studies validates that African American Studies is a unique and significant discipline—one that intersects almost every academic discipline and cultural construct—and confirms that the discipline has a noteworthy history and a challenging future. The various bodies of knowledge, the philosophical framework, methodological procedures, and theoretical underpinnings of the discipline have never been clearly delineated from an African-centered perspective.
Abstract: “Nathaniel Norment, Jr has produced an impressively vital, thoroughly researched, and engagingly written overview of African American Studies. He illuminates the significant African American contributors to the development of Black culture, history, politics, and liberation movements with special focus on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. African American Studies: The Discipline and Its Dimensions explores and provides insights into Black life, struggles, creativity, and the endless social movements for freedom and justice. The impressive bibliography, primary documents, and profiles of African American leaders and creative artists will encourage readers to delve even deeper into the Black past and to participate in the continuing quest for freedom and justice. This textbook places African American Studies on a solid foundation and insures its continuation as a dynamic field of intellectual inquiry.”—Darlene Clark Hine, John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor of History, Michigan State University...
Abstract: “Nathaniel Norment, Jr.’s African American Studies: The Discipline and Its Dimensions is a comprehensive anthology on various streams in disciplinary and interdisciplinary African American Studies from an African-centered perspective. His approach is to address some of the gaps in African American Studies by illuminating some of the new trends, theories, and methods that have emerged. Professor Norment, a well-known, respected scholar in his own right, provides a view of African American experiences that looks more fully at the wholeness of African peoples from the perspective of those people. This book stands as an asset for students at all levels.”—Tara Green, Linda Carlisle Excellence Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies, Professor and Former Director (2008–2016) of African American and African Diaspora Studies at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro...
Abstract: “Confronted with a volume this size the knee jerk reaction is to use terms such as ‘definitive,’ ‘comprehensive,’ and ‘indispensable’. With African American Studies: The Discipline and Its Dimensions these have been earned and are well deserved. Nathaniel Norment, Jr engages a subject that is broad in scope, evolving in complexity, steeped in scholarly debates, and now a half-century old in its current phase. After a learned and balanced discussion of the origins and development of African American Studies in the broadest sense, Professor Norment devotes seventeen chapters to areas and disciplines where it is both relevant and has had an impact. This book is such a treasure trove of persons, events, organizations, facts and analysis that it should be on the desk of every professor and teacher in the field from middle and high schools through undergraduate and graduate institutions. The bibliographies are reliable starting points for additional reading and research for teachers and students alike. Clear in its point of view, free from the factual errors, polemics and out right falsehoods that can appear on some. internet sites, African American Studies: The Discipline and Its Dimensions is a trustworthy resource. Well done, Professor Norment. Well done.”—John H. Bracey, Professor and former Chair, W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies, University of Massachusetts, Amherst...
Abstract: “African American Studies: The Discipline and Its Dimensions (by Nathaniel Norment, Jr., a professor with decades of experience) is a roadmap to the evolution of Black Studies, past and future. He rends his way through the history and development of a complex and comprehensive account, connecting African American Studies to other bodies of knowledge to reveal and display the elusive underbelly and underpinnings of the discipline, exposing its variety of parts of the discipline and what they mean, painting the contours of the difference between Black Studies and the study of blackness while incorporating and integrating the multidiscipline. After poring over the manuscript in recent months, I can testify that it is a monumental snapshot of a fountain of knowledge as well as a new pedagogy for the elevation and empowerment of those who lost their roots in the tangled horror and mean and rushing waters of the Middle Passage to a strange land and corrosive centuries of enslavement and inhumane destruction as segregated and marginalized chattel. This book will bolster the academic and public appreciation of the history of the field and is likely to become the number one bible of African American studies, a multifaceted blueprint, for years to come.”—Nathan Hare, professor, sociologist, psychologist; the first person to coordinate/chair a Black Studies program at a U.S. university (San Francisco State University); co-founder of The Black Think Tank with Julia Hare and co-founder of The Black Scholar: A Journal of Black Studies and Research with Robert Chrisman...
Abstract: "African American Studies: The Discipline and Its Dimensions is an ambitious and successful project. Wonderfully balanced and nicely nuanced, the text examines a variety of conventional academic disciplines through the lenses of the Black experience, as well as Black scholars who study the black world. Nathaniel Norment, Jr. has brought together various elements of African American Studies as an intellectual enterprise that seeks a comprehensive exploration of that field of study grounded in an African-center perspective. In a single text, he contributes to our understanding of the limits of traditional Western conceptions of knowledge, as well as the unswerving commitment of black scholars and African American Studies to advance counterarguments, theories, and methodologies related to the ongoing struggle for Black freedom and liberation.”—Floyd W. Hayes, III, retired Senior Lecturer, Center for Africana Studies, Johns Hopkins University...
Abstract: “African American Studies: The Discipline and Its Dimensions is a rare text with as much depth as breadth. It stands alone as a comprehensive guide to the history, present and future of the fields of African American and Africana Studies and is a highly readable, engaging indispensable resource for teachers, students and the all others who want to better understand the breathtakingly interdisciplinary contributions of Black Studies to higher education and the world at large.”—Noliwe Rooks, Professor, Africana Studies, and Director, American Studies, Cornell University...
Abstract: “Nathaniel Norment, Jr.’s African American Studies: The Discipline and Its Dimensions is the most comprehensive mapping of the field to date. Ambitious and learned, this text grounds Black thought in an African context before demonstrating how Black intellectuals have engaged, challenged and transformed Eurocentric bodies of knowledge housed in conventional Western disciplines. Ranging over sixteen areas including, but not limited to, philosophy, anthropology and history, this work is sure to shape our understanding of, and debates about, African American Studies for generations. It is a brilliant achievement, a singular contribution.”—Farah Jasmine Griffin, William B. Ransford Professor English and Comparative Literature and African American Studies, Columbia University...

Abstract: This book explores the relation between food production and place. Food production has traditionally shaped the character and self-conceptions of regions giving rise to a recognised linkage between certain foods and geographical areas. In the age of globalisation, it is inevitable that global food production will affect regional foods and eating habits. The contributors ask whether this also has a bearing on regions’ self-identity. Although industrialisation has had a major impact on food availability, food safety, and eating habits, industrially-produced food is increasingly regarded as «unhealthy food» in contrast to local food which is seen as being «good for the body». The volume includes discussions about how consumers deal with perceived risks associated with industrial production. They uncover a sense of alienation engendered by the invisibility of food production and food management processes and furthermore reflect on the notion of «hidden ingredients» which might influence consumers’ imagination about food and food production in general.

Abstract: This book offers new perspectives on transnational citizenship, memory and strategies of development. Beginning with an exploration of belonging and cultural memory, the book turns to a series of case studies in order to examine the ways in which citizens actively engage with their state of origin through narratives of remembrance. In the Haitian case, community engagement is primarily a grassroots movement in spite of the early creation of a Ministry of Haitians Abroad (MHAVE). The Jamaican case, however, differentiates itself by having a top–down structure promoted by an administration that actively seeks to engage Jamaicans abroad by way of solidarity funds. By treating simultaneously two geopolitical entities, Francophonie and the Commonwealth, this study offers a unique, comparative perspective on a complex web of family networks, spiritual bonds and entrepreneurial cross-border practices at the core of a common Caribbean culture of resilience and self-reliance. The findings on the relationship between memory, citizenship and the State challenge the existing assumption that communities abroad become increasingly assimilated into the new society, whereas, in fact, the idea of a transnational citizenship has become increasingly prevalent. This evolution is enhanced by memory, which acts as a powerful dynamic engine to deconstruct citizenship while connecting beyond borders.
Abstract: «Clara Rachel Eybalin Casséus’s Geopolitics of Memory and Transnational Citizenship is an exciting interdisciplinary work bringing together memory studies, archival work, ethnographic interviews, and a decolonial praxis. Eybalin Casséus’s politics of re-reading otherwise begins in pre-Columbus Haiti, an alternative longue durée perspective which passes through colonial Saint-Domingue, arrives in the present-day Caribbean and its many diasporas, and points to alternative transnational Caribbean futures. Her comparative focus on diasporic Haitian and Jamaican expat «associations» (organizations) connects histories in Haiti, Jamaica, France, England, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Cuba and Italy, putting South-South networks in dialogue. This allows for on-the-ground comparisons between La Francophonie and the Commonwealth, as well as productive discussions and alternative considerations regarding idées reçues around so-called British Multiculturalism and French Intégration. She reads circularity as «the sum of mobilities» and brilliantly brings postcolonial theoretical concepts such as creolization and Tout-monde back to earth, while demonstrating the ways in which colonial and postcolonial traffic move in multiple directions. Eybalin Casséus’s work offers not just palimpsests of memory, but productive matrices, via: the museum, the archive, the port, the association, the movement of capital and its resulting displacements, the map, the ship, the sacred, the neighbor, the exile, the hurricane, the earthquake, the migrant, the host, the guest, and the silences. It is a welcome addition to Caribbean Studies.» (Professor Megan C. MacDonald, EURIAS Residential fellow, 2018-2019 / IMéRA - Institut d'études avancées d'Aix-Marseille Université and Assistant Professor of English and Comparative Literature, Koç University, Istanbul)«With this engaging volume about transitional networks of Caribbeans in the diaspora, the author presents an insightful analysis of contributions to development as well as social and political participation in the homeland and host land. Clara Rachel Eybalin Casséus enriches the literature on decolonised knowledge by successfully studying individual and collective memories of the colonial past, and therewith contributes to discussions about Colonization and Chinafication in the Global South. It is a valuable volume to the literature of CARICOM member states. Advisable to academics, politicians, policymakers and those interested in the Caribbean and the Global South.»(Dr Betty Sedoc-Dahlberg, Ph.D. Social Sciences U. of Amsterdam/The Netherlands. Past and last Rector Magnificus of the University of Suriname)«In her latest monograph, Clara Rachel Eybalin Casséus demonstrates expertise in the pioneer field of cultural and political geography. While this discipline is relatively new, the subject matter is acutely newsworthy: it is about migrants and diasporas. The quality of Clara Rachel Eybalin Casséus's study of migratory geographies is that she studies not only the relation between immigrants or their descendants with their host states --- which is how scholars usually conduct research on migration --- but she also studies the relationship of emigrants with their land of origin after the move has occurred. The result is a remarkably interesting comparative study of collective representations connecting France and the UK to Caribbean islands (Haiti and Jamaica). The study is based on field research including thorough investigations of communities and organizations in the aforementioned countries and interviews of hundreds of individuals, besides analysing rich primary and secondary archival sources and field trips to Guadeloupe, Martinique and French Guiana. The purpose was to test transnational networks between families and associations in the Hexagon and its overseas territories with a focus on the associational activism of Haitians, whether in the French Antilles or the Hexagon and beyond in the Global South. Clara Rachel Eybalin Casséus opens rich new perspectives in her successful attempt to answer questions about: multiple loyalties, notions of citizenship and transnational politics in a geopolitical space, and the representations of belonging. Clara Rachel Eybalin Casséus's book will be most useful as a model of research methodology for anyone studying migration.»(Professor Oleg Kobtzeff, Fellow, Royal Geographical Society and Associate Professor, Political & Environmental Geography, American University of Paris)...

Abstract: This book is an empirical study of a central European city focused on the political process. The authors use the example of the city of Wroclaw to present a condition of the urban public sphere in the context of local governance. Contemporary specificity of the public sphere is a result of a long process of system transformation in this part of Europe as well as of the impact new global challenges have had on the political process in self-governmental institutions. The book presents the practice of governance as a form of the political in both institutional and civic spheres of the city. The cases provided (related to politics of memory, the symbolic, sports, subcultures and urban movements) show how circulations of governance practices are created and how they influence the institutional borders of the political.

Abstract: The last several years have seen mass uprisings and dynamic social movements across the globe, from the onset of the Arab Spring in 2011, to the Black Lives Matter movement following Michael Brown’s death in Ferguson, Missouri in 2014. There is no doubt that social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter accelerated and facilitated these uprisings, providing a way for people to organize and express themselves despite government repression. From Tahrir Square to Ferguson: Social Networks as Facilitators of Social Movements attempts to answer the question of whether these movements could have succeeded before the advent of the Internet age. From political protest to regime change, social movements have become increasingly digital. Taking on the current political climate from an international perspective, From Tahrir Square to Ferguson: Social Networks as Facilitators of Social Movements attempts to address the issues of a growing social media audience facing a wide variety of social and political issues.

Abstract: Cities are where the majority of people in the world live. As such, it is critically important to understand cities when seeking to address quality-of-life issues. While the concentration of people in cities presents many complex issues that warrant attention, the focus of this book is on urban communication and human interaction as regulated by municipal governments. Thirteen scholars—whose backgrounds range from community organizing, to law, telecommunication, architecture, city planning, art, policy studies, and urban communication—examine public communication venues and opportunities, all of which are impacted by municipal regulation. Whether it is the selective funding of public art, the establishment of architectural standards for public buildings, the regulation of signage, public assembly, food trucks, or telecommunication access, the authors in Urban Communication Regulation: Communication Freedoms and Limits contend that urban policy and regulation shape communication in cities. Through zoning, funding, "private law," and a host of other means, the regulation of communication has significant impacts on the quality of life for those who live in cities. The essays in this volume focus on many of these impacts, and suggest both why and how municipal regulation can improve the quality of urban communication.

Abstract: Girlhood, Beauty Pageants, and Power: Trailer Park Royalty explores the phenomenon of child beauty pageants in rural communities throughout the American South. In a bricolage of post-structural feminism, critical ethnographies, critical hermeneutics, and cultural studies lenses, this book analyzes how the performance of participants—most from a lower socio-economic bracket—and the power exercised by beauty pageant culture work to formulate girls’ identities. Girlhood, Beauty Pageants, and Power also examines how depictions in popular culture through film, videos, documentaries, and television shows add to the dialogue. Author Elisabeth B. Thompson-Hardy suggests rural pageant culture works to create girlhood identity and shapes the way participants view the world and themselves—through intricate cultural work in terms of gender and class. This book is intended for students and teachers who are interested in dissecting rural girlhood and development, Southern American beauty standards, and the effect of the media on girls’ identities.
Abstract: “Occasionally a book like Girlhood, Beauty Pageants, and Power: Trailer Park Royalty appears and opens complicated conversations that are intriguing. Conceptualizations of female identity and beauty pageants dwell in this text within the context of Southern place. The analysis swirls with a bricolage of critical traditions. Elisabeth B. Thompson-Hardy deftly negotiates the relationships among language, social institutions, beauty pageants, subjectivity, class, power, and place. This book is a major contribution to fields as diverse as cultural studies, gender studies, and place studies. It is a first-rate scholarly contribution. Read it.”—William M. Reynolds, Associate Professor of Curriculum, Foundations, & Reading, Georgia Southern University...

Abstract: This book sheds new light on the role global migrant communities played in the context of imperial expansion. It offers two systematic chapters and seven case studies which deal with the Japanese, German, African, Chinese and Khoja diasporas. By comparing different diasporic formations with each other and in their relationships to colonial imperialism, the volume challenges the paradigm that imperialist ideologies always originated in the European mother countries of imperial expansion and highlights the multi-directionality of the imperial discourse which crossed diasporas, empires and colour lines. The volume seeks to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the dynamics of global community formation in the context of imperial expansion.

Abstract: Living in the country is trendy - the contributions found in this book examine the rural environment as a projection screen as well as a space to explore and to negotiate social developments.

Abstract: Environmental argument is ‘about’ far more than meets the eye. How people (mis)understand each other during environmental debates is affected by conflicts between values and ways of life which may not be directly connected with the environment at all. This book offers sociological evidence from three contrasting societies – Ireland, Germany and China – to explore how diversity of cultural context affects deliberation about the physical world. What can we discover by examining environmental debates through the lens of interculturality? When people disagree about flood management, building motorways or extracting gas, what difference does it make if they have diverse experiences of neighbourly relations, how to use time or how to imagine a good life? What is going on at intersections between cultures to influence the trajectories of environmental debates? The book disinters taken-for-granted practices, feelings and social relationships which affect environmental arguments, in scientific and artistic debate as well as in politics and policy-making. Importantly, the book makes visible the effects of cultural difference on people’s approaches to arguing itself. If public arguing is shaped by specific habits of feeling or imagination, how does that impact on theories of democracy? Do we need new kinds of arguing to cope with environmental crises? What elements of arguing are decisive in the ways people come to see environmental decisions as wise choices?...

Abstract: What does it mean to be white in a society that proclaims race meaningless, yet is deeply divided by race? In the face of pervasive racial inequality and segregation, most white people cannot answer that question. In the second edition of this seminal text, Robin DiAngelo reveals the factors that make this question so difficult: mis-education about what racism is; ideologies such as individualism and colorblindness; segregation; and the belief that to be complicit in racism is to be an immoral person. These factors contribute to what she terms white racial illiteracy. Speaking as a white person to other white people, DiAngelo clearly and compellingly takes readers through an analysis of white socialization. Weaving research, analysis, stories, images, and familiar examples, she provides the framework needed to develop white racial literacy. She describes how race shapes the lives of white people, explains what makes racism so hard to see, identifies common white racial patterns, and speaks back to popular narratives that work to deny racism. Written as an accessible overview on white identity from an anti-racist framework, What Does It Mean to Be White? is an invaluable resource for members of diversity and anti-racism programs and study groups, and students of sociology, psychology, education, and other disciplines. This revised edition features two new chapters, including one on DiAngelo’s influential concept of white fragility. Written to be accessible both within and without academia, this revised edition also features discussion questions, an index, and a glossary.
Abstract: Praise for the First Edition of What Does It Mean to Be White?: «Rarely will one find an analysis of whiteness (and the problems associated with it) that is as comprehensive as this one. From incisive and wide-ranging critiques of how white folks deflect, deny, and evade the topic of racism, and the implications of our own racial identity and position, to an absolutely on-point interrogation of how racism and whiteness influence white teachers-in-training, and thus, the larger educational process, Robin DiAngelo demonstrates the kind of clarity of thought so needed on this important subject.» (Tim Wise, Author of White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son and Dear White America: Letter to a New Minority)...

Abstract: The Cold War left indelible traces on the city, where polarities on the global stage crystallized and intersected with political and social dynamics predating and bypassing the Blocs. This collection taps into the rich fabric of memories, histories and cultural interactions of thirteen cities worldwide and the lived experience of urban communities during the long Cold War: activated and mobilized by atomic technologies, taking tourist photographs, attending commercial fairs, enjoying the cinema and the ballet, singing in choirs, paying respect in local cemeteries, visiting museums, and responding to town councils, unions and the local press. Literature, film, photography, the press, the monument, the cemetery, the factory, the ruin, the archive and the natural ecosystem are some of the key frameworks of cultural production elucidated here with a view to countering and exploding received myths about the Cold War.

Abstract: The book is an intellectual and political response to Thomas Sankara’s challenge to the African people to dare to invent their own future, an echo of Patrice Lumumba’s call for them to write their own history. Exploring the history of Africa’s underdevelopment and the short-circuiting of the Pan-African movement, it argues for the revival of Pan-Africanism as a force for change and calls for a worthy successor to the Fifth Pan-African Congress. As a background to this argument and call, the book revisits Pan-Africanism’s history and founding ideals and conducts ruthless forensic examinations of the de facto Bantustanization of much of Africa and parts of the Caribbean, the ‘alternative development’ fiascos of the late twentieth century, the contemporary ‘globalization’ and ‘democratization’ of African projects by imperialist interests, the ‘Pan-Africanisms’ of imperialism’s active collaborators and other obstructions to the decolonization of Africa and African development. Finally, recognizing that the plights of many Afro-Latinos, Afro-Indians, Afro-Arabs and other ‘lost’ or neglected ‘tribes of Africa’ – as well as those of the victims of ‘black-empowered’ predators – call out for urgent Pan-Africanist responses, the book contains numerous start-up project ideas for action-oriented Pan-Africanists.

Abstract: How can the examination of action groups, such as the one discussed in this book, help to initiate a discussion of environmental conflicts as societal conflicts? In this work, which is an ethnographic study of a protest born in Istanbul during the late 1990s, the author suggests that the peculiarities of a protest-group should be viewed as social, political and cultural rather than issue-specific. The book offers a close ethnographic examination of the protest, studying it as a product of the particular character of Turkish public life. It illustrates the particular character of the protest itself as a product of the identities evolving, the activities taking place and the community that these have created amidst the struggle. It is a contribution to the anthropology of collective action and brings together recent studies of the anthropology of social movements, environmentalism and urban settings, with wider literature on social movements, civil society and urban studies and anthropological and sociological studies on Turkey.

Abstract: Since Auschwitz, and more and more frequently today, places that were theatres of mass suffering and other atrocities are becoming common features of our cultural landscape. What should we do with these places? Keep them as they were, to remind us of what actually took place there, as ideal museums of past evils? Or should we transform them and, if so, into which forms and according to which principles? Which pasts do these places transmit, and how? This volume uses an innovative semiotic methodology to analyse selected key trauma sites. The author demonstrates that these places can become, once properly interrogated, privileged observatories capable of throwing light upon the many different conflicts, forms of social control, and power relationships that underlie any politics of memory. The selfsame notions of trauma and memory become, in this way, rewritten in quite a different light: far from any kind of naturalistic definition, they emerge as painful «knots» within which many of the most crucial questions in the contemporary world are intertwined.
Abstract: «Overall, Landscapes of Memory is a fascinating exploration of a wide variety of sites, referencing many in brief alongside the dominant chapter leaders. [...] this is an important study of a range of trauma sites and demonstrates not only that there is much for us to learn about sites beyond the familiar European selection, but that each site can teach us something about trauma and a population’s response to it more generally.»(Glyn Morgan, European History Quarterly 48(3) 2018)...

Abstract: The revolution in media technologies and the political upheavals intertwined with them demand a new media ethics. Given the power of global media corporations and the high-speed electronics of media technologies worldwide, more and more people are either brought together through dialogue and communication technologies or assimilated by them into a dominant culture. In cultural conflict all over the world, people tend to emphasize absolute differences when they express themselves, and under conditions of censorship and oppression citizens are increasingly prone to violence. To take seriously dramatic technological changes in a complicated world of cultural diversity, media ethics does not simply need to be updated but moved forward in a new intercultural direction. The Ethics of Intercultural Communication presents a futuristic model for doing so. Focusing on Oriental and Western cultures, the book’s key case studies are China, North America, and Europe, where intercultural issues are relevant to an increasingly borderless world. Chapters focusing on a single nation or culture analyze findings from a cross-cultural perspective. Comparative studies appeal to transnational theories and norms. Multi-ethnic voices in any community are increasingly understood as essential for a healthy society, and the media’s ability to represent these voices well is an important arena for professional development and for enriching media codes of ethics. The news media are responsible for mapping the profound changes taking place and this book teaches us how.

Prostitution seems to be as old as humanity itself and is consequently not described as the «oldest profession» without cause. This anthology is an interdisciplinary, chronological and regional extensive approach to analyze the phenomenon. It provides a broad historical, sociological, cultural, and gender perspective on prostitution for the academic as well as the interested reader alike. It examines the role of prostitutes in society, the reception of the profession per se and the conditions due to which it is established.

Over the last sixty years, Europe has been built as a political, legal and economic space. Nevertheless, this process has not been accompanied by the construction of a European public sphere, despite the will of its founders, who wanted to create a European cultural area, recognized as such by its citizens. Now that, through the internet and social networks, the European public space is in the process of reconfiguring, it is time for a comprehensive reflection – both historical and methodological – on this space. When did a European public space appear for the first time in history? What were the institutions, events, developments from the Middle Ages, helped design and perceive Europe as a common sphere – a public space? How, and by whom, was occupied public space in Europe at different times in history? How geographical discoveries and encounters with other cultures have they strengthened the perception of Europe as a common and public? How will the European public space be set in the future? This book gathers essays from specialists (historians, philosophers, legal historians, sociologists) at Labex EHNE, Écrire une Histoire Nouvelle de l’Europe.

Abstract: How did American cities change throughout the 20th and early 21st century? This timely publication integrates research from American Literary and Cultural Studies, Urban Studies and History. The essays range from negotiations of the »ethnic city« in US literature and media, to studies of recent urban phenomena and their representations: gentrification, re-appropriation and conversion of urban spaces in the USA. These interdisciplinary and intercultural perspectives on American cities provide unique points of access for studying the complex narratives of urban transformation.

Abstract: Post-9/11 Representations of Arab Men by Arab American Women Writers: Affirmation and Resistance examines the portrayals of Arab masculinities in novels published after September 11, 2001, by women of Arab descent in the United States. The book provides a historical account of the mainstream representations of Arab masculinities in the United States, using them as a contrast to the realities experienced by Arab men in the American diaspora. Considering the construction of male and female Arab American identities, this book illustrates the role of feminism in Arab American literature written by women and its influence on women’s depictions of Arab men. Through an analysis of representative works by Diana Abu-Jaber, Laila Halaby, and Randa Jarrar, among others, this volume demonstrates how Arab American women’s anti-racist and anti-sexist struggles inform their nuanced portrayals of Arab men. This book will be essential for professors and students of ethnic American literatures in general and Arab American studies in particular, as well as for those interested in women’s studies and masculinity studies.

Abstract: From race, sex, class, and culture, the multidisciplinary field of Internet studies needs theoretical and methodological approaches that allow us to question the organization of social relations that are embedded in digital technologies, and that foster a clearer understanding of how power relations are organized through technologies. Representing a scholarly dialogue among established and emerging critical media and information studies scholars, this volume provides a means of foregrounding new questions, methods, and theories which can be applied to digital media, platforms, and infrastructures. These inquiries include, among others, how representation to hardware, software, computer code, and infrastructures might be implicated in global economic, political, and social systems of control. Contributors argue that more research needs to explicitly trace the types of uneven power relations that exist in technological spaces. By looking at both the broader political and economic context and the many digital technology acculturation processes as they are differentiated intersectionally, a clearer picture emerges of how under-acknowledging culturally situated and gendered information technologies are impacting the possibility of participation with (or purposeful abstinence from) the Internet. This book is ideal for undergraduate and graduate courses in Internet studies, library and information studies, communication, sociology, and psychology. It is also ideal for researchers with varying expertise and will help to advance theoretical and methodological approaches to Internet research.

Abstract: This book argues for – and carries out – what the author terms Heightened Performative Autoethnography (HPA). The common theme throughout the volume involves resisting oppressive and hegemonic spaces within paradigms, and hence seeking epistemological liberation. The text methodologically and conceptually situates this newly proposed variant of autoethnography, while contextualizing and justifying its «performed or enacted» theme involving resistance against the oppressiveness of paradigms. The book concludes with an analysis and commentary, demonstrating how this particular theme, and HPA as a research and writing repertoire, are able to meaningfully respond to the eighth moment of contemporary qualitative research, which calls for a critical and social justice agenda directed at empowerment, equity, liberation, and related issues. Heightened Performative Autoethnography could be used in upper-level undergraduate classes and graduate courses within the social sciences, humanities, and education, for courses on critical theory, contemporary research methodology, performative studies, narrative writing, and related subjects.
Abstract: «An inventive, well-researched text about auteothnography and performance, capitalism and post/colonialism, activism and revolution. I especially appreciate Sughrua’s discussion of paradigmatic resistance, epistemological liberation, and social justice.» (Tony E. Adams, Northeastern Illinois University)...

Abstract: Parallel to the abolition of Atlantic slavery, new forms of indentured labour stilled global capitalisms need for cheap, disposable labour. The famous coolie trade – mainly Asian labourers transferred to French and British islands in the Indian Ocean, Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas, as well as to Portuguese colonies in Africa – was one of the largest migration movements in global history. Indentured contract workers are perhaps the most revealing example of bonded labour in the grey area between the poles of chattel slavery and free wage labour. This interdisciplinary volume addresses historically and regionally specific cases of bonded labour relations from the 18th century to sponsorship systems in the Arab Gulf States today.

Abstract: Italy is one of the most recent immigratory destinations in Europe, having long been one of the continent’s most important sources of emigration. Due to its strategic position in the Mediterranean, the Italian peninsula is a crossroads of complex transnational movements and represents a unique and dynamic context for the study of contemporary migration and its representation through the diverse channels of media, literature and film. The product of a two-year interdisciplinary research project into representations of migration to Italy, this volume brings together scholarly contributions from the fields of migration studies, linguistics, media, literature and film studies as well as essays by practitioners and activists. It provides both a multi-faceted snapshot of how diverse representations of immigration capture experiences and affect decision-making dynamics and an in-depth study of how media, literature and cinema contribute to the public perception of migrants within the destination culture.

Abstract: Over the last decades Clifford Geertz’ interpretive anthropology has played an important role in the field of socio-cultural anthropology. The study presents the critical reception of his thoughts in Western countries and Polish anthropology. Interpretive anthropology is based on the category of interpretation and the concept of thick description: the assumed indexical nature of reality and the possibility of unraveling its order through semiotic analysis has influenced the epistemological reflection in anthropology, the approach to theory, fieldwork and the research process.

Abstract: The guiding theme of the book is a traditional institution of Tajik culture: mahalla – neighborhood. For centuries it has sustained the existence of Tajik culture, and in times of the greatest religious persecution in the USSR it has helped Islam to survive. In this book the author does not limit himself to the description of mahalla and the explanation of its social functions; a significant part of the book is constituted by a comparison of mahalla with the concept of civil society existing in contemporary Western culture. For this reason, the book examines differences between Eastern and Western cultures, in which the specificity of the first is collectivism, and the second individualism. The author’s considerations are based on two pillars: firstly, he has great knowledge on theoretical literature and field studies while secondly an important role has been played by the fact that he has spent a large part of his life as a resident of mahalla in Tajikistan before beginning his studies in the West. This very fact has allowed him to meet Western civil society as an observer. Precisely, the experience of living in these different societies permits the author to formulate his own opinions and conclusions, sometimes surprising to the reader.

Abstract: With developments in media technologies creating new opportunities and challenges for social movements to emerge and mobilize, this book is a timely and necessary examination of how organized labour and workers movements are engaging with this shifting environment. Based on extensive empirical research into emerging migrant and low-wage workers movements and their media practices, this book takes a critical look at the nature of worker resistance to ever-growing global corporate power in a digital age. Situating trade unionism in historical context, the book considers other forms of worker organizations and unionism, including global unionism, social movement unionism, community unionism, and syndicalist unionism, all of which have become increasingly relevant in a digitized world-system. At a time when the labour movement is said to be in crisis, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in the state of the labour movement, the future of unions, and the possibilities for challenging corporate exploitation of workers today.
Abstract: «The book will be useful for students of trade union and labour movement studies, politics, activism and media studies.»(Mike Wayne, European Journal of Communication 31/6 2016)...

Abstract: The «Korean Wave», or Hallyu phenomenon, has brought South Korean popular culture to the global population. Studies on Korean visual culture have therefore often focused on this aspect, leaving North Korea sidelined and often considered in a negative light because of its political regime. Korean Screen Cultures sets out to redress this imbalance with a broad selection of essays spanning both North and South as well as different methodological approaches, from ethnographic and audience studies to cultural materialist readings. The first section of the book, «The South», highlights popular media – including online gaming and television drama – and concentrates on the margins, in which the very nature of «The South» is contested. «The South and the North» examines North Korea as an ideological other in South Korean popular culture as well as discussing North Korean cinema itself. «The Global» offers new approaches to Korean popular culture beyond national borders and includes work on K-pop and Korean television drama. This book is a vital addition to existing scholarship on Korean popular culture, offering a unique view by providing an imaginary unification of the two Koreas negotiated through local and transnational popular culture flows.

Abstract: «What do you think is meant by the term ‘post-racial’ and how far do you think we’ve come, as a country, toward achieving it?» Helen Fox, a white teacher and scholar, asked variations of this question to 87 high school and college students, educators, administrators, community organizers, international visitors, and tribal leaders across the country. Their stories reveal how far we are from a «post-racial» ideal – even in the most liberal of communities. Despite her long experience as an anti-racist educator, Fox was surprised to learn how deeply the lives of people of color continue to be shaped by race, and how hard they have to work to ignore or overcome assumptions, remarks, exclusion, and at times, blatant hostility from whites. The kinds of racism they experience depend on their gender, their religion, their geographical location, their skin tone, their forms of speech and expression, their socioeconomic class, their aspirations, their determination to be outspoken or stoic, the kinds and amount of contact they choose to have (or can’t escape having) with whites, and of course, their ascribed race. Despite our nation’s «post-racial» climate, racialized assumptions, beliefs, and denials affect everything, from the reach of the national media down to the smallest community: the street where one lives, the friends one attempts to make, the social club, the study group, the classroom. As an art educator remarked, «The ‘post-racial’ reminds me of the post-modern – the fracturing of things. It’s not like our society has finally come together – unless we’ve come together as a fractured society and we’re feeling the prickliness of the broken shards.»...

Abstract: Discourses about food, especially on social media, affect the dietary choices of many people on a daily basis all over the world. In recognition of this phenomenon, the selection of 25 ethnological essays in this volume explores the effects of the digital age on post-modern food culture. It examines the influence of the Internet as a provider of a seemingly limitless flow of information and discourse about food sources, production, distribution and consumption. It also analyses the attitudes towards food in the context of ecological, environmental, ethical, health, and everyday lifestyle issues – at local, regional and global levels.

Abstract: The urgent need for the study of exclusive identities in conflict is ever more apparent in a globalizing world in which societies are becoming multicultural and complex and in which inter-cultural contact and the co-existence of languages and cultures comes increasingly to bear on the construction of plural identities. The present book considers perversion in the construction of identity and the perverse usage of identity in areas such as social cohesion – xenophobia, racism, ostracism, rejection, ageism, marginalisation – and the mismanagement of linguistic identity, language groups and associated discriminatory practise arising out of historical and culturally based discrimination. The texts were submitted in an international meeting held in the Institute for Identities and Societies of the University on Lleida (Catalonia, Spain) in November 2012.

Abstract: The third in a trilogy on communication and ethnopolitical conflict, this book focuses on multicultural groups significantly divided by politics and religion. These groups have become «fiercely entangled»; that is, they are inescapably politically, socially, and culturally interdependent. Using the Israeli Palestinian conflict as the primary example, Ellis offers a timely analysis of how communication can begin to untangle these groups. Group differences lead to cultural differences – some of the most difficult aspects of a conflict. This book examines the nature of group differences as well as solutions-based conflict resolution that is embedded in theories of communication and democracy. Ellis argues that resources are unequally distributed and differences are the norm. Politics is used to manage these differences and although communication is the fundamental tool of conflict management, there are other components in resolving conflicts that complement communication approaches. Dialogue and deliberation are posed as workable responses to untangling these differences and managing intractability.
Abstract: «In a globalizing world, any ethnic group that does not control a state is in danger of cultural extinction. In this thought-provoking book, Don Ellis takes up the question of how a democratic state should communicate with and about its ethnic minorities.» (Rick McCauley, Bryn Mawr College) «Don Ellis’ Fierce Entanglements grapples with the problems of ethnopolitical conflict in multicultural societies where resources and privileges are contested. He examines problems and prospects of cultural differences and power from a communication perspective. He shows how dialogue and deliberation are needed to begin to work through such entanglements and give shape to this important literature.» (Richard Buttny, Syracuse University) «The book’s breadth, as evident in its drawing from macro negotiation and diplomacy, meso intergroup and intercultural communication, and micro interpersonal relationships, makes it a tour de force and a must-read for scholars involved in any realm of conflict management.» (Linda L. Putnam, University of California, Santa Barbara)...

Abstract: This book investigates nationalisms and the emergence of national identities among the Indigenous peoples across North America. It examines the many difficulties which the Native communities have had to face in order to assert themselves as nations, as well as looking at the ambiguity of the term 'nation' within First Nations-government relations. The volume gives a broad perspective on the historical development of Native American nationalism and also explores a variety of political, educational, sociological, cultural and even literary viewpoints. The experiences of the Indigenous peoples are compared with the experiences of other Aboriginal groups across the globe, in order to enrich our understanding of global indigenous nationalisms. The contributors to this volume represent the perspectives of a variety of different First Nations and a wide range of disciplinary fields, from history, anthropology and political science to communications, law, linguistics and literary studies.
