    Abstract: This book explores the history of reggae in modern Britain from the time it emerged as a cultural force in the 1970s. As basslines from Jamaica reverberated across the Atlantic, so they were received and transmitted by the UK's Afro-Caribbean community. From roots to lovers' rock, from deejays harnessing the dancehall crowd to dub poets reporting back from the socio-economic front line, British reggae soundtracked the inner-city experience of black youth. In time, reggae's influence permeated the wider culture, informing the sounds and the language of popular music whilst also retaining a connection to the street-level sound systems, clubs and centres that provided space to create, protest and innovate. Liner Notes for the Revolution offers a startling new perspective on these acclaimed figures-a perspective informed by the overlooked contributions of other Black women concerned with the work of their musical peers. Zora Neale Hurston appears as a sound archivist and a performer, Lorraine Hansberry as a queer Black feminist critic of modern culture, and Pauline Hopkins as America's first Black female cultural commentator. Brooks tackles the complicated racial politics of blues music recording, song collecting, and rock and roll criticism.     Abstract: "In Everyone Loves Live Music, Fabian Holt takes us through transformations in musical performance culture that explain how live music became the wildly popular industry it is today--and what these changes mean for fans. Holt looks at two realms of live music subject to the same commercializing trends: rock clubs, a feature of everyday life in major American and European cities and blowout musical festivals, venues for over-the-top experiences. As both clubs and festivals are being bought up and managed by a shrinking number of corporate entities such as Live Nation, they are becoming increasingly homogenous, showcasing a narrow roster of mostly Anglophone musicians. While many of the clubs and festivals Holt studies began as highly local scenes, they have fallen prey to media conglomerates, affecting the social worlds not only of fans, but of the cities and neighborhoods that are home to these musical cultures. As a result, Holt shows, our social worlds are transforming as particular forms of music, place, lifestyle, and leisure come to dominate our cultural lives"

    Abstract: In the early years of the Cold War, Western nations increasingly adopted strategies of public diplomacy involving popular music. While the diplomatic use of popular music was initially limited to such genres as jazz, the second half of the 20th century saw a growing presence of various popular genres in diplomatic contexts, including rock, punk, reggae, and hip-hop.This volume illuminates the interrelation of popular music and public diplomacy from a transnational and transdisciplinary angle. The contributions argue that, as popular music has been a crucial factor in international relations, its diplomatic use has substantially impacted the global musical landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries.

    Abstract: DDR und Heavy Metal? Wolf-Georg Zaddach rückt eine in der Forschung lange Zeit vernachlässigte Jugendkultur in den Fokus und erläutert - erstmalig in diesem Umfang - die alltäglichen Praktiken und Entwicklungen der Heavy Metal-Szene im DDR-Sozialismus der 1980er-Jahre. Die empirische Grundlage hierfür bieten bisher unveröffentlichte Quellen wie Songtexte auf Karteikarten, Fan-Briefe und Akten der »Stasi« (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit). Es kommen aber auch zahlreiche Zeitzeugen wie die Macher der Kultradiosendung »Tendenz Hard bis Heavy« sowie diverse Fans und Musiker zu Wort.

    Abstract: Plague, a devastating and recurring affliction throughout the Renaissance, had a major impact on European life. Not only was pestilence a biological problem, but it was also read as a symptom of spiritual degeneracy and it caused widespread social disorder. Assembling a picture of the complex and sometimes contradictory responses to plague from medical, spiritual and civic perspectives, this book uncovers the place of music - whether regarded as an indispensable medicine or a moral poison that exacerbated outbreaks - in the management of the disease. This original musicological approach further reveals how composers responded, in their works, to the discourses and practices surrounding one of the greatest medical crises in the pre-modern age. Addressing topics such as music as therapy, public rituals and performance and music in religion, the volume also provides detailed musical analysis throughout to illustrate how pestilence affected societal attitudes toward music

    Abstract: Migration war immer ein wichtiger Aspekt der Geschichte der europäischen Integration. Die bestehende Literatur hat dieses Thema hauptsächlich von einer nationalen und sozioökonomischen Perspektive betrachtet. Dieses Buch jedoch integriert solche fragmentierten Analysen, betrachtet sie aus einem weiteren Blickwinkel und ordnet sie im breiteren Zusammenhang des sozialen und demografischen Wandels Europas sowie der politischen und wirtschaftlichen Geschichte der europäischen Integration ein.Das Buch untersucht die Auswirkungen der EU-Migrationspolitik auf die politischen und wirtschaftlichen Außenbeziehungen Europas und erkennt die Migration aus osteuropäischen Ländern vor 1989 als Teil der europäischen Integration an.Indem das Buch zeigt, dass die Migrationspolitik und ihr Einfluss auf europäische Gesellschaften nur im Zusammenhang der EU-Rahmenbedingungen vollständig verstanden werden können, trägt es wesentlich zur Migrationsforschung im Allgemeinen bei.Mit Beiträgen von:Giulia Bentivoglio, Marcel Berlinghoff, Cristina Blanco Sío-López, Elena Calandri, Alice Cunha, Yves Denéchère, Pawel Jaworski, Slawomir Lukasiewicz, Willem Maas, Guia Migani, Simone Paoli, Dimitris Parsanoglou, Yvette Santos, Beatrice Scutaru, Jacek Tebinka, Moshik Temkin, Giota Tourgeli und Roberto Ventresca.
    Abstract: Movement of people has been a key feature in the whole history of European integration. While existing literature has mostly adopted national viewpoints and a socioeconomic perspective, this book integrates these existing fragmented analyses, views them from a broader perspective and places them in the wider context of the social and demographic transformation of Europe and the political and economic narrative of continental integration. It highlights the impact made by EC/EU immigration policies on the external political and economic relations of Europe and acknowledges that pre-1989 migration from East European countries is part of European integration. By showing that migration policies and their impact on European national societies and economies cannot be fully understood without taking into account the EC framework, this book, therefore, contributes to migration studies as a whole.

As a companion to the ground-breaking The Power of Black Music, this text brilliantly situates emerging, morphing, and influential black musics in a broader framework of cultural, political, and social histories. Grappling with subjects frequently omitted from traditional musical texts, "The Transformation of Black Music" is guided by more than just the ideals of inclusivity and representation. This work covers overlooked topics that include classical musicians of African descent, and builds upon the contributions of esteemed predecessors in the field of black music study.     Abstract: 25 Jahre Mauerfall und zehn Jahre EU-Osterweiterung - diese politisch bedeutsamen Ereignisse haben auch die historische Osteuropaforschung grundlegend verändert. Wie sehr die Beiträger_innen des Bandes infolgedessen durch die Etablierung der Historischen Kulturwissenschaften, die Öffnung vorher verschlossener Archive und nicht zuletzt vorher ungekannter Reisefreiheiten profitiert haben, zeigen ihre Stadtgeschichten: Auf der Basis kulturhistorischer Fragestellungen etwa zur Musealisierung und Monumentalisierung, zur Repräsentativität oder zur Multikulturalität im osteuropäischen urbanen Raum geben sie Einblicke in die Geschichte von Metropolen wie Prag, Baku, Moskau oder St. Petersburg und regionalen Zentren wie Lemberg oder Irkutsk
    Abstract: 25 years after the fall of the wall and ten years after the eastward expansion of the EU - these politically significant events have also fundamentally altered historical research on Eastern Europe. The extent to which the contributors to this volume have benefitted as a result of the establishment of historical cultural studies, the opening of previously sealed archives and more importantly, from a hitherto unknown freedom of movement, is shown in their urban histories: based on cultural-historical interrogations into »museification« and monumentalization, on representativeness or multiculturalism in the Eastern European urban sphere, they offer insights into the history of metropolises like Prague, Baku, Moscow or St Petersburg, and regional centers like Lviv or Irkutsk

    Abstract: Singing together is a tried and true method of establishing and maintaining a group’s identity. Identity, Intertextuality, and Performance in Early Modern Song Culture for the first time explores comparatively the dynamic process of group formation through the production and appropriation of songs in various European countries and regions.     Abstract: In this book, David Bello offers a new and radical interpretation of how China's last dynasty, the Qing (1644–1911), relied on the interrelationship between ecology and ethnicity to incorporate the country's far-flung borderlands into the dynasty's expanding empire. The dynasty tried to manage the sustainable survival and compatibility of discrete borderland ethnic regimes in Manchuria, Inner Mongolia, and Yunnan within a corporatist 'Han Chinese' imperial political order. This unprecedented imperial unification resulted in the great human and ecological diversity that exists today. Using natural science literature in conjunction with under-utilized and new sources in the Manchu language, Bello demonstrates how Qing expansion and consolidation of empire was dependent on a precise and intense manipulation of regional environmental relationships

Jahrhundert eines der zentralen programmatischen Motive in Literatur, Malerei, Film und Musik bildet.Im Zentrum dieses Bandes stehen ausdrücklich musikalische Deutungen. Die Beiträge geben Einblick in die Vielfältigkeit künstlerischer Stadterfindungen und untersuchen anhand unterschiedlicher Metropolen-Porträts differenzierte Reaktionen auf das Städtische, Optiken und Ausdrucksformen sowie die Vergangenheit und Gegenwart urbaner Imaginationen.
    Abstract: The design and deciphering of the urban take place at multiple levels of social configurations and artistic perceptions simultaneously. The city has thus served as way of life, projection, image, and imaginary habitat, which has shaped one of the key programmatic themes in literature, painting, film, and music since the 19th and 20 centuries.Expressly musical interpretations are central to this volume. The articles provide insight into the diversity of artistic urban inventions and examine them on the basis of different cities - portraits of differentiated reactions to the municipal, scope, and forms of expression as well as past and present urban imaginations.

    Abstract: »Man muß absolut modern sein!« - Diese Prämisse stand wie ein Leitstern über zahlreichen Avantgarde-Bewegungen der 1910er- und 1920er-Jahre. Vom Salon auf die Straße, aus den esoterischen Zirkeln ins Leben, bevorzugt ins Nachtleben: Als Grenzgänger zwischen den kulturellen Lebenswelten ging der neue Künstlertypus im legeren Anzug und mit eingeklemmtem Augenzwickel zum proletarischen Boxkampf oder ins populäre Varieté. Er spielte in einer Jazzband, sammelte Schallplatten, tanzte Foxtrott sowie Charleston und erhob mithin nicht nur die Reklame zum künstlerischen Prinzip, sondern verstand es auch geschickt, die erprobten PR-Strategien der Unterhaltungsindustrie für seine eigenen Zwecke zu nutzen. Auf diesen Spuren folgt Anke J. Hübel den Protagonisten der damaligen Avantgarde-Bewegungen und widmet sich dabei insbesondere der vielschichtigen Beziehung, die die Künstler mit der seinerzeit äußerst populären Jazzmusik eingingen. Der interdisziplinär angelegte Essay ist gleichermaßen ein Stück Medien- wie auch Zeitgeschichte.

    Abstract: »Man muß absolut modern sein!« - Diese Prämisse stand wie ein Leitstern über zahlreichen Avantgarde-Bewegungen der 1910er- und 1920er-Jahre. Vom Salon auf die Straße, aus den esoterischen Zirkeln ins Leben, bevorzugt ins Nachtleben: Als Grenzgänger zwischen den kulturellen Lebenswelten ging der neue Künstlertypus im legeren Anzug und mit eingeklemmtem Augenzwickel zum proletarischen Boxkampf oder ins populäre Varieté. Er spielte in einer Jazzband, sammelte Schallplatten, tanzte Foxtrott sowie Charleston und erhob mithin nicht nur die Reklame zum künstlerischen Prinzip, sondern verstand es auch geschickt, die erprobten PR-Strategien der Unterhaltungsindustrie für seine eigenen Zwecke zu nutzen.Auf diesen Spuren folgt Anke J. Hübel den Protagonisten der damaligen Avantgarde-Bewegungen und widmet sich dabei insbesondere der vielschichtigen Beziehung, die die Künstler mit der seinerzeit äußerst populären Jazzmusik eingingen. Der interdisziplinär angelegte Essay ist gleichermaßen ein Stück Medien- wie auch Zeitgeschichte
    Abstract: »One must be absolutely modern!« - this premise hung like a guiding star above numerous avant-garde movements of the 1910s and '20s. From the salon to the street, from esoteric milieux into life, preferably the night-life: as border-crossers between cultural lifeworlds, in a casual suit and with a tightly clamped monocle, the new artist type headed out to proletarian boxing fights or to popular variety shows. He played in a jazz band, collected records, danced the foxtrot and the Charleston, and raised as such not just the claim of the artistic principle, but he also knew how to cleverly use proven PR strategies from the entertainment industry for his own purposes. Anke J. Hübel goes looking for traces of this amongst the protagonists of the avant-garde movements of the time, and in doing so, focuses in particular on the multilayered relationship which the artists had with the extremely popular jazz music of the time. This interdisciplinary essay is equal parts a work of media history, and of modern history more broadly

    Abstract: This is the first comprehensive comparative study of religions in the history of American jazz, and of jazz's contributions to American religions. Going beyond extant biographical studies of individual exemplars, or cursory attention to either 'spirituality' or jazz in the civil rights movement, the book argues for the centrality of religious experiences to any legitimate understanding of jazz, while also suggesting that attention to jazz opens up new interpretations of American religious history.
