Abstract: "Many believed the twentieth century would be the century of the child: an era in which modern societies would value and protect children, sheltering them from violence and poverty. Yet this hopeful vision was marred by the harsh realities of migration, displacement, and armed conflict. Small Stories of War grapples with the meanings and memories of childhood and wartime by asking new questions about lived experience. Spanning the First World War to the early twenty-first century and featuring chapters about Canada, Australia, Germany, the former Yugoslavia, Rwanda, and northern Uganda, this volume asks how young people encountered and responded to armed conflict. How did children, youth, and their families make sense of war in the violent twentieth century? How have they shared their stories and experiences of violence and trauma? Analyzing a broad range of sources including family letters, oral history, and children’s artwork, contributors offer important insights into the production of historical knowledge with and about young people. Engaging with cutting-edge debates about emotions, temporality, space, and young people as political actors, Small Stories of War offers compelling new research and an interpretive toolkit that will benefit scholars from across the social sciences and humanities."

Abstract: "A troubling development of the brutal century recently passed has been the growing use of children for war. World War I became the first "total war" of modern times. To engage in war on immense scale authorities believed everyone must participate. That included children. Relentless campaigns of propaganda in both world wars focused special attention on kids. The immense scope of total war grew to dominate children's lives, their daily existence militarized by a world preoccupied by conflict. But we have often ignored wartime contributions of children. What were they expected to do? How were they persuaded to do it? How did it contribute to the war? In what ways did it affect their lives? What did they think about that? This history attempts to respond by examining activities of home-front children in the United States during both world wars. The revised edition considers recent research to extend a discussion of children's experiences in war. It includes an examination of comic books, considers fitness standards, and expands a discussion of Boy Scouts and other groups for children. It also moves the work beyond the United States to consider activities of children in twenty-first century wars, as observers and, tragically, as participants. The fully referenced text should be of interest to students of war and childhood. But it is also written for a general audience interested in how children respond to war. Many Americans experienced war as children, and many others have parents who did. This book is also for them"--

Abstract: This book is the first in-depth exploration of grandparents' relationships with adult children and grandchildren in divorced families. It asks what part grandparents might play in public policy and whether measures should be taken to support their grandparenting role. Do they have a special place in family life that ought to be recognised in law?

Abstract: What is it like to be a child growing up in Britain these days? Is it a happy time, or is there too much to worry about? What are the best and worst aspects of being a child today? Children these days draws on the accounts of over two thousand children, and five hundred adults, to examine the present day meaning of childhood and its implications for policy and practice. Key questions addressed by the study include how is childhood perceived? What is it like to grow up and become an adult? What are the influences and controls on young people? Are young people protected or over-protected? How much do young people and adults respect and talk to each other? To what extent is Britain a child-friendly society? The book provides unique evidence on children's and adults' views of childhood, and draws conclusions on the attitudes and policies to be challenged and developed in the 21st century. It will make a significant contribution to contemporary debate and discussion on the future of childhood. Children these days is essential reading for policy makers, practitioners, academics, researchers, and students on childhood studies, social sciences, and social policy courses. It has been written in a style that means it is also accessible to others with a more general interest in children and childhood

It takes an intersectional approach that regards migrant and refugee children in terms of gender, race and ethnicity, nationality and citizenship. Abstract: "The tragedies and reckonings around racism that have rocked the country have created a specific crisis for parents and other caregivers: how do we talk to our children about it? How do we guide our children to avoid repeating our racist history? While we work to dismantle racist behaviors in ourselves and the world around us, how do we raise our children to be antiracists? After he wrote the National Book Award-winning Stamped from the Beginning, readers asked Ibram Kendi, "How can I be antiracist?" After the bestsellers How to Be an Antiracist and Antiracist Baby, readers began asking: "How do I raise an antiracist child?" Dr. Kendi had been pondering the same ever since he became a teacher--but the question became more personal and urgent when he found out his partner, Sadiqa, was pregnant. Like many parents, he didn't know how to answer the question--and wasn't sure he wanted to. He didn't want to educate his child on antiracism; he wanted to shield her from the toxicity of racism altogether. But research and experience helped him realize that antiracism has to be taught and modeled as early as possible--not just to armor our children against the racism still indoctrinated and normalized in their world, but to remind adults to build a more just future for us all. Following the model of his bestselling How to Be an Antiracist, Kendi combines vital scholarship with a compelling personal narrative of his own journey as a parent to create a work whose advice is grounded in research and relatable real-world experience. The chapters follow the stages of child development and don't just help parents to raise antiracists, but also to create an antiracist world for them to grow and thrive in"--

Abstract: This textbook introduces readers to the academic scholarship on the history of childhood and youth in sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular focus on the colonial and postcolonial eras. In a series of seven chapters, it addresses key themes in the historical scholarship, arguing that age serves as a useful category for historical analysis in African history. Just as race, class, and gender can be used to understand how African societies have been structured over time, so too age is a powerful tool for thinking about how power, youth, and seniority intersect and change over time. This is, then, a work of synthesis rather than of new research based on primary sources. This book will therefore introduce mainstream scholars of the history of childhood and youth to the literature on Africa, and scholars of youth in Africa to debates within the wider field of the history of children and youth

Abstract: "In Kids Those Days: Children in Medieval Culture, Lahney Preston-Matto and Mary Valante have organized a collection of interdisciplinary research into childhood throughout the Middle Ages. Contributors to the volume investigate childhood from Greece to the "Celtic-Fringe," looking at how children lived, suffered, thrived, or died young. Scholars from myriad disciplines, from art and archaeology to history and literature, offer essays on abandonment and abuse, fosterage and guardianship, criminal behavior and child-rearing, child bishops and sainthood, disabilities and miracles, and a wide variety of other subjects related to medieval children. The volume focuses especially on children in the realms of religion, law, and vulnerabilities"--

Abstract: This book raises important questions and presents important findings on socio-cultural representations and embodiments of the child and childhood. At the start of the twenty-first century, new anxieties constellate around the child and childhood, while older concerns have re-emerged, mutated, and grown stronger. But as historical analysis shows, they have been ever-present concerns. This innovative and interdisciplinary collection of essays considers examples of monstrous children since the sixteenth century to the present, spanning real-life and popular culture, to exhibit the manifestation of the Western cultural anxiety around the problematic, anomalous child as naughty, dangerous, or just plain evil. The linkage between children and horror, or horror-full children, would seem an almost natural connection to make given its popularity in contemporary horror films and novels. However, the intersection between the two categories has a long history going back beyond the more obvious Gothic reimaginings of the nineteenth century with its under-age ghostly terrors revealing that the idea of the 'little horror' is seemingly an inherent demarcation within society between adults and those that are viewed as 'not adults'. However, the anomalous child can also be seen in a positive light, and that resistance to easy categorization can be embraced by wider society as a force for change. Greta Thunberg, a singularly focused individual, 16 years old at the time of writing, has consistently refused to act as desired by the adult society around her in pursuit of gaining recognition of the urgent need for action in regard to environmental change. The book takes an inter- and multidisciplinary approach, drawing upon fields as diverse as sociology, psychology, film, and literature, to study the role of the child and childhood within contemporary Western culture and to see the ways in which each discipline intersects and influences the other, all through a historical lens

Abstract: A major goal of this volume is to create a forum for the integration of three areas: theory and research on the effects of exposure to political violence (EPV), intervention to aid victims of EPV, and the prevention of EPV. It notes the lack of application of social science research and theory to prevention of EPV.

Abstract: Visiting five continents and covering 220 years, our journey into modern Jewish childhood begins with birth and ends at the time of bar or bat mitzvah. Jewish children, their history and their images, are described by scholars from the fields of demography, history, linguistics, film studies, literature, religious studies, and psychology. Among the questions they probe are: How did Jewish children experience immigration? What did they contribute to modern ethnic and national Jewish cultures? What was their fate during times of war? In the aftermath of war, how did they go about rebuilding their lives, and how did they recollect and interpret the events of their interrupted childhood?

Abstract: Introduction. Sentiment and self-control : approaching childhood in the age of revolutions -- Reading serially : the new enlightenment youth periodical for the new youth subject -- Telling tales : folklore transformed for middle-class child readers -- Reading the world : German children's place in geographic education -- Writing home : letters as a social practice -- Writing the self : growing up with diaries -- Furnishing their own age
Abstract: "How did we come to imagine what "ideal childhood" requires? Beginning in the late eighteenth century, German child-rearing radically transformed, and as these innovations in ideology and educational practice spread from middle-class families across European society, childhood came to be seen as a life stage critical to self-formation. This new approach was in part a process that adults imposed on youth, one that hinged on motivating children's behavior through affection and cultivating internal discipline. But this is not just a story about parents' and pedagogues' efforts to shape childhood. Offering rare glimpses of young students' diaries, letters, and marginalia, Emily C. Bruce reveals how children themselves negotiated these changes. Revolutions at Home analyzes a rich set of documents created for and by young Germans to show that children were central to reinventing their own education between 1770 and 1850. Through their reading and writing, they helped construct the modern child subject. The active child who emerged at this time was not simply a consequence of expanding literacy but, in fact, a key participant in defining modern life"--

Abstract: "The book proposes a new academic concept, "Cultural Reverse" ([Chinese characters]), referring to the phenomenon that the older generation started to learn from the younger generation since the 1980s in China, and analyzes the multiple causes and social impacts of this trend. Following on from the first volume, this second volume further analyzes the multiple causes of cultural reverse, including rapid social change, the influence of peer groups, and the impact of the media. Then, in a broader context, the author discusses the complex interdependence of and conflict among the state, society and youth. He tells a story of the transformation of Chinese youth over the past hundred years, and names this "one-place" (fast-changing China) and "one-time only" (unrepeatable) phenomenon "China feeling". The innovative content of the book pushes the barriers of the academic field. Scholars of Chinese sociology and general readers interested in contemporary Chinese society will find this book to be essential"--

Abstract: "For all that is known about the depth and breadth of African American history, we still understand surprisingly little about the lives of African American children, particularly those affected by northern emancipation. But hidden in institutional records, school primers and penmanship books, biographical sketches, and unpublished documents is a rich archive that reveals the social and affective worlds of northern Black children. Drawing evidence from the urban centers of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, Crystal Webster's innovative research yields a powerful new history of African American childhood before the Civil War"--

Abstract: "Communication Begins with Children: A Lifespan Communication Sourcebook seeks to transform the field of Communication arguing the field must stop neglecting and segregating children and instead adopt an age-inclusive lifespan approach that fully includes and fully considers children in all communication theorizing, research and education from infancy and throughout the human lifespan. One-size-fits-all, adult-centric communication theorizing, researching, and educating is inadequate and harms the communication field's potential as a social force for positive change for all communicators. The volume contains four sections (Foundations, Relational Communication Development, Digital Communication Development, and Navigating Developmental Communication Challenges) that showcase state-of-the-art chapters about the history of children's relational and digital communication studies, methods used to study children's communication, media literacy development, communication and children's health, and much more. A must read for all communication researchers, educators, and students and an important addition to advanced and graduate level human and digital communication courses"--

Abstract: The datafication of everything -- Datafication as a practice of the self -- Mediatized parenting as datafied parenting -- Mediatized homes as datafied homes -- The mediatized peer network -- The mediatized school and the datafication of education -- Datafied childhoods, datafied futures?
Abstract: "What are the consequences of growing up in a datafied world in which social interaction is increasingly dependent on digital media and everyday life is shaped by algorithmic predictions? How is datafication being normalized in children's everyday life? What are the technologies, contexts and relations that enhance children's datafication? What are the meanings of data practices for parents, teachers, and children themselves? These are some of the questions that Mascheroni and Siibak address in Datafied childhoods: Data practices and imaginaries in children's lives. When the data-driven business model emerged twenty years ago, we could not have imagined how pervasive data extraction would have become in the context of everyday life, including the "institutional triangle" of children's lives (the home, the school and the playground). Today, the COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the datafication of everyday life and our reliance on data-relations. Yet, we still know little about the nature, meanings and consequences of the data practices in which children, and the adults around them, engage. This book tries to fill in this gap in two ways. First, drawing on the authors' knowledge of children and media studies and their own research on children's, families' and teachers' interactions with multiple technologies (IoT and IoToys, artificial intelligence, algorithms, robots) in different contexts (home, school and play), it promotes a non-media-centric and child-centered approach. Second, in so doing it encourages further scholarly inquiry into the everyday as the analytical entry point to understand how datafication is transforming parenting, education, childhood and thereby the children"--

By examining cultural products geared towards teaching children American identity, Playing With History highlights the changes and constancies in depictions of the American story and ideals of citizenship over the last one hundred years. The book examines political and ideological messages sold to children throughout the twentieth century, tracing the messages conveyed by racist toy banks, early governmental interventions meant to protect the toy industry, infences and pressures surrounding Cold War stories of the western frontier, and the fractures visible in the American story at a mid-century history themed amusement park. This engaging analysis culminates in a look at the successes and limitations of the American Girl Company empire"--

Abstract: "Jeanne Pitre Soileau, winner of the 2018 Chicago Folklore Prize and the Opie Prize, vividly presents children's voices in What the Children Said: Child Lore of South Louisiana. Including over six hundred handclaps, chants, jokes, jump-rope rhymes, cheers, taunts, and teases, this book takes the reader through a fifty-year history of child speech as it has influenced children's lives. What the Children Said affirms that children's play in south Louisiana is acquired along a network of summer camps, schoolyards, church gatherings, and sleepovers with friends. When children travel, they obtain new games and rhymes, and bring them home. The volume also reveals, in the words of the children themselves, how young people deal with racism and sexism. The children argue and outshout one another, policing their own conversations, stating their own prejudices, and vying with one another for dominion. The first transcript in the book tracks a conversation among three related boys and shows that racism is part of the family interchange. Among second grade boys and girls at a Catholic school another transcript presents numerous examples in which boys use insults to dominate a conversation with girls, and girls use giggles and sly comebacks to counter this aggression. Though collected in the areas of New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Lafayette, Louisiana, this volume shows how south Louisiana child lore is connected to other English-speaking places: England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, as well as the rest of the United States"--

Abstract: The planet is dying. Our earth’s climate has reached a point where it can no longer regulate itself. Fires, floods, and natural disasters are sweeping countries across the world. What does it mean to be a child citizen in the Anthropocene? Can we teach children a posthuman civics that can care for the more-than-human world? Extending on the concepts of ‘little publics’ and ‘posthuman citizenships’, this book progresses these notions with a view to modelling, and better understanding, posthuman publics and civics. Using experimental methodologies, the authors develop original, robust ways of understanding children's subcultural civic practices founded on care for the more than human.

Abstract: Brian Butlers grandmother was taken from her family in 1910. She was 12 years old. Twenty years later her daughter, Brians mother, was taken.Thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, like Brian Butlers, have been coping with the trauma of child removal for more than a century. Beyond Sorry describes the growth of the grassroots movement that exposed the truth about Australias shameful removal policies and worked towards justice.Born in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, the movement was joined by nearly a million non-Indigenous Australians in the 1998 Sorry Day Journey of Healing campaigns which paved the way for the Federal Parliaments unanimous apology in 2008.Brian Butler and John Bond call on the Australian government and community to take further steps to help complete the journey of healing for Stolen Generations people, bring about real reconciliation and prevent the continuing separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and communities

Abstract: What does childhood mean in contemporary Thailand? What constitutes childhood in a slum? How does childhood figure in the construction of national citizenships? Rich in ethnographic detail, this fascinating, engaging and illuminating study explores the daily lives, constraints, and social worlds of children born in the slums of Bangkok, and their ways of defining themselves in relation to a range of governing technologies, state and non-state actors, and broad cultural politics. It does so by interrogating the layered meanings of "childhood" in slums, schools, Buddhist temples, Christian NGOs, state and international aid organisations, as well as social media. 0Giuseppe Bolotta's analysis employs "childhood" as a prism to make sense of broader socio-political, religious, and economic transformations in Thai society. By examining the competition between different Thai and foreign actors to define and control the world-view formed by these children, he demonstrates how Bangkok slums are political arenas within which local, national and global social forces and interests converge and clash. At the same time, this analysis highlights the roles played by Bangkok's poor children in processes of social change, considering how young people's efforts to make sense of themselves in an era of authoritarian rule reflect the broader tensions facing the urban poor in this complex moment of Thai history. 0The book shows how "marginal childhoods" and the "cultural technologies of childhood" - schools, religious agencies, NGOs - reflect both endemic inequalities in Thailand's larger socio-political structure and global transformations in transnational childhood governance [...].

Abstract: "A searing, deeply candid memoir about a young woman's journey to understanding her complicated parents--her father a Vietnam veteran, her mother an Okinawan war bride--and her own, fraught cultural heritage. Elizabeth's mother was working as a nightclub hostess on U.S.-occupied Okinawa when she met the American soldier who would become her husband. The language barrier and power imbalance that defined their early relationship followed them to the predominantly white, upstate New York suburb where they moved to raise their only daughter. There, Elizabeth grew up with the trappings of a typical American childhood and adolescence. Yet, even though she felt almost no connection to her mother's distant home, she also felt out of place among her peers. Decades later, Elizabeth comes to recognize the shame and self-loathing that haunt both her and her mother, and attempts a form of reconciliation, not only to come to terms with the embattled dynamics of her family but also to reckon with the injustices that reverberate throughout the history of Okinawa and its people. Clear-eyed and profoundly humane, Speak, Okinawa is a startling accomplishment--a heartfelt exploration of identity, inheritance, forgiveness, and what it means to be an American"--

Abstract: European colonization of other continents has had far-reaching and lasting consequences for the construction of childhoods and children's lives throughout the world. Liebel presents critical postcolonial and decolonial thought currents along with international case studies from countries in Africa, Latin America, and former British settler colonies to examine the complex and multiple ways that children throughout the Global South continue to live with the legacy of colonialism. Building on the work of Cannella and Viruru, he explores how these children are affected by unequal power relations, paternalistic policies and violence by state and non-state actors, before showing how we can work to ensure that children's rights are better promoted and protected, globally

Abstract: Introduction. Sentiment and self-control : approaching childhood in the age of revolutions -- Reading serially : the new enlightenment youth periodical for the new youth subject -- Telling tales : folklore transformed for middle-class child readers -- Reading the world : German children's place in geographic education -- Writing home : letters as a social practice -- Writing the self : growing up with diaries -- Furnishing their own age.
The active child who emerged at this time was not simply a consequence of expanding literacy but, in fact, a key participant in defining modern life"

Abstract: This book offers a new approach for theorising and undertaking childhood research. It combines insights from childhood and generational studies with object-oriented ontologies, new materialisms, critical race and gender theories to address a range of key, intractable challenges facing children and young people. Bringing together traditional social-scientific research methods with techniques from digital media studies, archaeology, environmental nanoscience and the visual arts, After Childhood: Re-thinking Environment, Materiality and Media in Children's Lives presents a way of doing childhood research that sees children move in and out of focus. In doing so, children and their experiences are not completely displaced; rather, new perspectives on concerns facing children around the world are unravelled which dominant approaches to childhood studies have not yet fully addressed. The book draws on the author's detailed case studies from his research in historical and geographical contexts. Examples range from British children's engagement with plastics, energy and other matter, to the positioning of diverse Brazilian young people in environmental and resource challenges, and from archaeological evidence about childhoods in the USA and Europe to the global circulation of children's toys through digital media. The book will appeal to human geographers, sociologists, anthropologists, education studies scholars and others working in the interdisciplinary field of childhood studies, as well as to anyone looking for a range of novel, interdisciplinary frames for thinking about childhood

Abstract: "In this richly detailed work Meredith Bak explores how the historical legacy of optical toys figures into the formation of children's media culture. Bak's analysis draws on her own archival research, as well as scholarship in a variety of disciplines including film and cinema studies, media archeology, history, literature, and childhood studies. The book is organized around a close analysis of the use and context for nineteenth and twentieth optical media -- the thaumatrope, phenakistoscope, zoetrope, praxinoscope, movable toy books, kaleidoscope, and stereoscope. While these mechanisms are fascinating in themselves, they are often seen merely as precursors to more fully developed film and cinema technologies. Bak restores these devices to their original context - middle-class nurseries and living rooms - and reveals how the types of play that they encouraged were engaged with changing ideas of childhood, the psychology of vision, and the education of the senses. One reviewer remarks, "The author's article length work is already being cited by colleagues in the field of Film and Media Studies, particularly the capaciousness of its innovative approach to media formats that link historical forms to contemporary media.""--

Abstract: ""In the Netherlands, a small group of biracial citizens has entered its eighth decade of lives that have been often puzzling and difficult, but which offer a unique insight into the history of race relations in America. Though their African American fathers had brought liberation from Nazi tyranny at the end of World War II, they had arrived in a segregated American military that derived from a racially divisive American society. Decades later, some of their children could finally know of a father's identity and the life he had led after the war. Just one would be able to find an embrace in his arms, and just one would arrive at her father's American grave after 73 years. But they could now understand their own Dutch lives in the context of their fathers' lives in America. This book relates their experiences, offering fresh insight into the history of American race relations."-Provided by publisher"--

Abstract: Based on the author's viral New York Times op-ed, a heartfelt celebration of the tomboy phenomenon and its implications for girlhood explores its origins in a Victorian ideal and role in shaping history, science and culture
Abstract: "In Tomboy, Davis explores the evolution of tomboyism from a Victorian ideal to a twenty-first century fashion statement, honoring the girls and women--and those who identify otherwise--who stomp all over archaic gender norms. She highlights the forces that have shifted what we think of as masculine and feminine, delving into everything from clothing to psychology, history to neuroscience, and the connection between tomboyism, gender identity, and sexuality. Above all else, Davis's comprehensive deep-dive inspires us to better appreciate those who defy traditional gender boundaries, and the incredible people they become." -- Amazon.com

Proceeding roughly from causes to consequences - from early life experiences to adolescent and teen experiences - each chapter focuses on a different domain, explains the laws and policies that create or exacerbate racial disparity in that domain, reviews relevant psychological research and its implications for those laws or policies, and calls for next steps. Chapter authors examine how race and ethnicity intersect with child maltreatment (including child sex trafficking, corporal punishment, and memory for and disclosures of abuse), child dependency court decisions, custody and adoption, familial incarceration, the "school to prison pipeline," police/youth interactions, jurors' perceptions of child and adolescent victims and defendants, and U.S. immigration law and policy"--

Abstract: Refiguring childhood stages a series of encounters with biosocial power, which is a specific zone of intensity within the more encompassing arena of biopower and biopolitics. Assembled at the intersection of thought and practice, biosocial power attempts to bring envisioned futures into the present, taking hold of life in the form of childhood, thereby bridging being and becoming while also shaping the power relations that encapsulate the social and cultural world(s) of adults and children. Taking up a critical perspective that is attentive to the contingency of childhoods -- the ways in which particular childhoods are constituted and configured -- this book offers a transversal genealogy that moves between past and present while also crossing a series of discourses and practices framed by children's rights (the right to play), citizenship, health, disadvantage, and entrepreneurship education. The overarching analysis converges on contemporary neo-liberal enterprise culture, which is approached as a conjuncture that helps to explain, and also to trouble, the growing emphasis on the agency and rights of children. It is against the backdrop of this problematic that the book makes its case for refiguring childhood, focusing on the how, where and when of biosocial power

Abstract: The focus of this Element is on the environment and how it is implicated in children's development.A very broad array of social and physical features connected to children's home life and to the neighborhoods where children live, including multiple aspects of parenting, housing characteristics and the increased prevalence of media in daily life are addressed.Attention is also given to the broader social, economic, and geographic contexts in which children live, such as neighborhood surroundings and conditions in less developed countries. There is a focus on how various aspects of the home context (e.g., crowding) and key parental characteristics, such as mental illness and substance abuse problems, affect the behavior of parents. Consideration also given to how various forms of chaos and instability present challenges for parents and children and how those circumstances are implicated in both children's development and caregiver behavior

Abstract: Natural selection has operated as strongly or more so on the early stages of the lifespan as on adulthood. One evolved feature of human childhood is high levels of behavioral, cognitive, and neural plasticity, permitting children to adapt to a wide range of physical and social environments. Taking an evolutionary perspective on infancy and childhood provides a better understanding of contemporary human development, predicting and understanding adult behavior, and explaining how changes in the early development of our ancestors produced contemporary Homo sapiens
