    Abstract: Was migration to Germany a blessing or a curse? The main argument of this book is that the Greek state conceived labor migration as a traineeship into Europeanization with its shiny varnish of progress. Jumping on a fully packed train to West Germany meant leaving the past behind. However, the tensed Cold War realities left no space for illusions; specters of the Nazi past and the Greek Civil War still haunted them all. Adopting a transnational approach, this monograph retargets attention to the sending state by exploring how the Greek Gastarbeiter’s welfare was intrinsically connected with their homeland through its exercise of long-distance nationalism. Apart from its fresh take in postwar migration, the book also addresses methodological challenges in creative ways. The narrative alternates between the macro- and the micro-level, including subnational and transnational actors and integrating a diverse set of primary sources and voices. Avoiding the trap of exceptionalism, it contextualizes the Greek case in the Mediterranean and Southeast European experience

    Abstract: "At the turn of the millennium, Middle Eastern and Muslim Germans had rather unexpectedly become central to the country's Holocaust memory culture--not as welcome participants, but as targets for re-education and reform. Since then, Turkish- and Arab-Germans have been considered as the prime obstacles to German national reconciliation with its Nazi past, a status shared to a lesser degree by Germans from the formerly socialist East Germany. It is for this reason that the German government, German NGOs, and Muslim minority groups have begun to design Holocaust education and anti-Semitism prevention programs specifically tailored for Muslim immigrants and refugees, so that they, too, can learn the lessons of the Holocaust and embrace Germany's most important postwar democratic political values. Based on ethnographic research conducted over a decade, Subcontractors of Guilt explores when, how, and why Muslim Germans have moved to the center of Holocaust memory discussions. Esra Özyürek argues that German society "subcontracts" guilt of the Holocaust to new minority immigrant arrivals, with the false promise of this process leading to inclusion into the German social contract and equality with other members of postwar German society. By focusing on the recently formed but already sizable sector of Muslim-only anti-Semitism and Holocaust education programs, this book explores the paradoxes of postwar German national identity"--

    Abstract: Seit dem Ersten Weltkrieg galten Massenkommunikation und Propaganda als integrale Faktoren des politischen und militärischen Geschehens. Damit wuchs der Bedarf an systematischer Expertise und wissenschaftlicher Erforschung. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges und im Kalten Krieg wurde die Planung, Beobachtung und Analyse von Propaganda zu einem wichtigen Feld strategischer Wissensproduktion. Im Wege einer dreiseitig verflochtenen Wahrnehmungs- und Beziehungsgeschichte untersucht Benno Nietzel, welche Rolle Kommunikationsexperten und Wissenschaftler in der Propaganda dreier Länder spielten: in den Vereinigten Staaten, in Deutschland und der Sowjetunion. Verschiedene Akteursgruppen konkurrierten jeweils um Gehör, Einfluss und Zuständigkeiten auf dem Gebiet der Propaganda. Aus ihren Erfolgen und ihrem Scheitern ergibt sich eine alternative Geschichte von Verwissenschaftlichungsprozessen und Expertentum im 20. Jahrhundert, die von Ungleichzeitigkeiten, Gegenläufigkeiten und Widersprüchen gekennzeichnet ist

    Abstract: Racism is once again an issue in Germany. Few studies have addressed the changing manifestations of racism in West Germany and in post-1990 Germany. The essays in this collection trace an arc of continuity from post-1945 völkisch ideology to the beginnings of right-wing terrorism, to the consequences of legislation concerning foreigners, and to issues of identity politics.
    Abstract: Rassismus ist ein vieldiskutiertes Gegenwartsthema – doch die spezifisch deutschen Aspekte und Brüche in der jüngeren Geschichte des Phänomens sind noch kaum erforscht. Nach einer ausführlichen Skizze und Analyse der westdeutschen Rassismushistorie durch den Herausgeber nimmt der Band in chronologischer Gliederung exemplarische Facetten in den Blick. Die Beiträge schlagen einen Bogen von den Kontinuitäten völkischen Denkens nach 1945 und den Anfängen des Rechtsterrorismus hin zu den Fragestellungen, die das frühe 21. Jahrhundert betreffen. Analysiert werden u. a. das sich verändernde linke wie rechte Rassismus-Verständnis nach 1968, die Aporien der frühen Rassismus-Forschung und des Multikulturalismus, sowie die Ära der "völkischen Ekstase" nach der Wiedervereinigung. Brennende Asylbewerberunterkünfte und die NSU-Mordserie zeigten, wie virulent der Rassismus in Deutschland noch ist, der in den identitätspolitischen Debatten jüngst unter neuen Vorzeichen thematisiert wird.

    Abstract: Seit dem Ersten Weltkrieg galten Massenkommunikation und Propaganda als integrale Faktoren des politischen und militärischen Geschehens. Damit wuchs der Bedarf an systematischer Expertise und wissenschaftlicher Erforschung. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges und im Kalten Krieg wurde die Planung, Beobachtung und Analyse von Propaganda zu einem wichtigen Feld strategischer Wissensproduktion. Im Wege einer dreiseitig verflochtenen Wahrnehmungs- und Beziehungsgeschichte untersucht Benno Nietzel, welche Rolle Kommunikationsexperten und Wissenschaftler in der Propaganda dreier Länder spielten: in den Vereinigten Staaten, in Deutschland und der Sowjetunion. Verschiedene Akteursgruppen konkurrierten jeweils um Gehör, Einfluss und Zuständigkeiten auf dem Gebiet der Propaganda. Aus ihren Erfolgen und ihrem Scheitern ergibt sich eine alternative Geschichte von Verwissenschaftlichungsprozessen und Expertentum im 20. Jahrhundert, die von Ungleichzeitigkeiten, Gegenläufigkeiten und Widersprüchen gekennzeichnet ist.

    Abstract: 'Another India' tells the story of the world's biggest religious minority. Weaving together vivid biographical portraits of a wide range of Indian Muslims--elite and subaltern, secular and clerical, activist and apolitical--it brings the experience of the country's Muslims under a single focus; and, by throwing light on the Indian Muslim condition during the first thirty years of independence, reflects on the true character of democratic India. What we have here is a rather different picture from received accounts of the 'world's largest democracy'. Challenging traditional histories of Nehru's India, Pratinav Anil shows that minority rights were neglected right from independence. Despite its best intentions, the Congress regime that ruled for three decades was often illiberal, intolerant and undemocratic. Muslims had to contend with discrimination, disadvantage, deindustrialisation, dispossession and disenfranchisement, as well as an unresponsive leadership. Anil demonstrates how the Muslim elite encouraged depoliticisation, taking up seemingly noble but largely inconsequential causes with little bearing on the lives of ordinary members of the community. There was no room for mass protests or collective solidarity in this version of Muslim politics. Another India explores this elite betrayal, whose consequences are still felt by India's 200 million Muslims today

    Abstract: Die Journalistin Franziska Grillmeier ist 2018 auf die griechische Insel Lesvos gezogen, wo sich zwischenzeitlich das größte Fluchtlager Europas befand. In ihrem Buch nimmt sie auch die Momente zwischen den Schlagzeilen in den Blick, taucht tief in die Lebenswirklichkeit der geflüchteten Menschen ein und zeigt, wie sie sich nach ihrer Ankunft in Europa erneuten Traumatisierungen widersetzen müssen. Grillmeier bewegt sich in Moria, in der Hafenstadt, im Norden der Insel und reist an weitere europäische Grenzorte, an denen die Systematik der Ausgrenzung ähnlich funktioniert. Im Mittelpunkt des Buches stehen die Geflüchteten selbst, die in zahllosen Gesprächen zu Wort kommen und deren Lebenswege erzählt werden. Die Autorin zeigt, was das Lagerleben mit einem Menschen macht - und reflektiert zugleich, wie das Inselleben auf sie selbst zurückwirkt: Während Grillmeier als Beobachterin aus freien Stücken kommen und gehen kann, endet dort für die Geflüchteten die Erzählung des offenen Europas. Auch die Kriminalisierung der humanitären Hilfe, der Abbau der Pressefreiheit, die Überlastung der Inselbewohner:innen und der Zynismus der Politik in Brüssel und Athen spielen eine zentrale Rolle. „2018 zog die Journalistin Franziska Grillmeier nach Lesbos – auf jene Insel, auf der sich das damals größte Fluchtlager des Kontinents befand: Moria. Warum teilen sie die Sichtweise des Westens nicht, zum Beispiel gegenüber Russland? Dieses Buch zeigt die Unterschiede der Wahrnehmung internationaler Politik im Westen und im Globalen Süden auf. Ein besseres Verständnis dieser Unterschiede wird immer drängender, je mehr die USA und Europa an ihrer einstigen Dominanz verlieren. Das Buch diskutiert, warum die Staaten des Globalen Südens so handeln, wie sie es tun, warum deren Skepsis gegenüber dem Westen so tief sitzt - und warum in der neuen Vielfalt auch Chancen liegen. Keine der drängenden globalen Herausforderungen kann mehr durch den Westen allein gelöst werden. Der russische Angriffskrieg gegen die Ukraine hat auch unseren Blick auf den Globalen Süden verändert. Es herrscht Verwunderung darüber, dass die westliche Positionierung gegen Russland in Staaten wie Indien oder Südafrika nicht geteilt wird. Dabei ist dem Globalen Süden längst eine neue strategische Bedeutung zugefallen. Neue politische Allianzen mit den Staaten des Globalen Südens sind notwendig. Doch wer dort Unterstützung sucht, muss deren Motive und Interessen verstehen. Im Globalen Süden ist Multipolarität, also eine Ordnung, in der keineswegs nur die USA und Europa, sondern auch China, Indien, Südafrika oder Brasilien und mancherorts sogar Russland eine wichtige Rolle spielen, ein positives Zukunftsszenario. Weil sie vielen Ländern Autonomie verspricht, indem sie Entscheidungsspielräume eröffnet, wo vorher keine waren. Im Globalen Süden wird die internationale Politik daher ganz anders gesehen als im Westen, wo man den Abschied von der alten Machtordnung als "unübersichtlich" und damit potenziell bedrohlich wahrnimmt. Dabei eröffnen sich Chancen, dort wo viele bislang vor allem Risiken sehen. Denn die fundamentalen Interessen Europas in Wirtschaft, Politik und Ökologie überschneiden sich mit denen vieler Staaten des Globalen Südens

Über den Zeitraum von 1977-1999 betrachtet Nadine Sylla, wie der Asyldiskurs der Bundesrepublik Konstruktionen des Eigenen hervorbringt.     Abstract: Bisherige Arbeiten zur Migrationsgeschichte verbleiben entweder im nationalen Rahmen oder untersuchen transnationale Organisationen und Prozesse. Kaum finden sich Studien, die diese Ebenen kombinieren. Im vorliegenden Band werden nun Migrationsprozesse und Migrationspolitik in 13 Ländern Europas von der Nachkriegszeit bis in die Gegenwart untersucht. Dabei geht es zum einen um die Migrationsprozesse selbst, um staatliche und behördliche Regulierungsversuche und deren Auswirkungen sowie um die Reaktionen der Einwanderungsgesellschaften und die der Migranten. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der Perspektive der Nationalstaaten, um Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede, Parallelen und Sonderwege zu identifizieren, Vergleiche zu ermöglichen und transnationale Prozesse zu erkennen. Vor allem zwischen den west- und osteuropäischen Ländern lassen sich dabei unterschiedliche Phasen erkennen zwischen Nachkriegs- und postkolonialer Migration, Arbeitsmigration, Binnenmigration, vor allem in der Sowjetunion, Ein- und Auswanderungsprozessen nach dem Zusammenbruch der Sowjetimperiums und der Migration aus den Bürgerkriegsstaaten, vor allem aus Syrien und Afghanistan, nach 2010.

    Abstract: Politics in the United States has become increasingly polarized in recent decades. Both political elites and everyday citizens are divided into rival and mutually antagonistic partisan camps, with each camp questioning the political legitimacy and democratic commitments of the other side. Does this polarization pose threats to democracy itself? What can make some democratic institutions resilient in the face of such challenges? Democratic Resilience brings together a distinguished group of specialists to examine how polarization affects the performance of institutional checks and balances as well as the political behavior of voters, civil society actors, and political elites. The volume bridges the conventional divide between institutional and behavioral approaches to the study of American politics and incorporates historical and comparative insights to explain the nature of contemporary challenges to democracy. It also breaks new ground to identify the institutional and societal sources of democratic resilience

    Abstract: "Republicans and Democrats increasingly distrust, avoid, and wish harm upon those from the other party. To make matters worse, they also increasingly reside among like-minded others and are part of social groups that share their political beliefs. All of this can make expressing a dissenting political opinion hard. Yet digital and social media have given people new spaces for political discourse and community, and more control over who knows their political beliefs and who does not. With Democracy Lives in Darkness, Van Duyn looks at what these changes in the political and media landscape mean for democracy. She uncovers and follows a secret political organization in rural Texas over the entire Trump presidency. The group, which organized out of fear of their conservative community in 2016, has a confidentiality agreement, an email listserv and secret Facebook group, and meets in secret every month. By building relationships with members, she explores how and why they hide their beliefs and what this does for their own political behavior and for their community. Drawing on research from communication, political science, and sociology along with survey data on secret political expression, she finds that polarization has led even average partisans to hide their political beliefs from others. And although intensifying polarization will likely make political secrecy more common, she argues that this secrecy is not just evidence that democracy is hurting, but that it is still alive; that people persist in the face of opposition and that this matters if democracy is to survive"--

    Abstract: "This book interrogates the patterns and discursive structures that have generated the seeming urgency of Muslims' integration. Focusing on Germany, it problematizes the grounds on which politics of integration are justified and reasoned upon, and thereby investigates divergent operations of power vis-à-vis Muslims and Islam in a formally liberal-secular society. The integration paradigm in Germany has been predicated on an imperial knowledge regime, in which Islam figures as the external friend or enemy of an imagined Christian secular. This book analyzes three kinds of integration practices as symptomatic sites for the multifaceted dimensions of power in this paradigm: the scientific measurement of Muslims' degrees of integration which are correlated with their degrees of religiosity; the politics of recognition promoted by state-organized dialogue with Muslims; and the threat of sanction, found in the regulations of citizenship and explicitly in citizenship tests. Centrally, the book argues that the paradigm of integration navigates between universalist claims and particularistic-racial and religious-reenactments of a secular nation-state framework at moments in which this very framework is crumbling."

    Abstract: "This book interrogates the patterns and discursive structures that have generated the seeming urgency of Muslims' integration. Focusing on Germany, it problematizes the grounds on which politics of integration are justified and reasoned upon, and thereby investigates divergent operations of power vis-à-vis Muslims and Islam in a formally liberal-secular society. The integration paradigm in Germany has been predicated on an imperial knowledge regime, in which Islam figures as the external friend or enemy of an imagined Christian secular. This book analyzes three kinds of integration practices as symptomatic sites for the multifaceted dimensions of power in this paradigm: the scientific measurement of Muslims' degrees of integration which are correlated with their degrees of religiosity; the politics of recognition promoted by state-organized dialogue with Muslims; and the threat of sanction, found in the regulations of citizenship and explicitly in citizenship tests. Centrally, the book argues that the paradigm of integration navigates between universalist claims and particularistic-racial and religious-reenactments of a secular nation-state framework at moments in which this very framework is crumbling."

    Abstract: "In Markets of Civilization Muriam Haleh Davis provides a history of racial capitalism, showing how Islam became a racial category that shaped economic development in colonial and postcolonial Algeria. French officials in Paris and Algiers introduced what Davis terms "a racial regime of religion" that subjected Algerian Muslims to discriminatory political and economic structures. These experts believed that introducing a market economy would modernize society and discourage anticolonial nationalism. Planners, politicians, and economists implemented reforms that sought to transform Algerians into modern economic subjects and drew on racial assumptions despite the formally color-blind policies of the French state. Following independence, convictions about the inherent link between religious beliefs and economic behavior continued to influence development policies. Algerian President Ahmed Ben Bella embraced a specifically Algerian socialism founded on Islamic principles, while French technocrats saw Algeria as a testing ground for development projects elsewhere in the global South. Highlighting the entanglements between race and religion, Davis demonstrates that economic orthodoxies helped fashion understandings of national identity on both shores of the Mediterranean during decolonization"--

Central to her argument is Derrick Bell’s work on racial realism, who argued that the subordination of black people in America is permanent. Racial Realism includes historical topics, such as Reconstruction, race in the 20th century, and recent events like #BlackLivesMatter, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the killing of George Floyd. As the author lays out, at various times in American history, black people felt a sense of hopefulness and optimism that America would finally extend treasured American values to them only to find themselves marginalized.     Abstract: Der Sonderband beleuchtet den Zusammenhang von Migration und Demokratie aus konzeptuellen und empirischen Perspektiven, um die Herausforderungen und Chancen der zunehmenden Politisierung des Themenfeldes umfassend einordnen und bewerten zu können. Im ersten Teil werden die strukturellen Spannungen demokratischer Gesellschaften hinsichtlich ihrer inneren und äußeren Grenzziehungen ausgeleuchtet. Im zweiten Teil stehen aktuelle politische Debatten und ihre Bedeutung für ein demokratisches, postmigrantisches Zusammenleben im Zentrum. Die Beiträge im dritten Teil fokussieren auf Dynamiken der Infragestellung von Ausschlüssen und untersuchen, inwiefern Konflikte um Migration und insbesondere Praktiken migrantisierter Akteurinnen und Akteure zur Demokratisierung der Demokratie beitragen können.

    Abstract: "When SNCC leader Stokely Carmichael first called for "Black Power" on a Civil Rights march in 1966 he not only gave name to a movement that shaped one of the most significant periods of the African American freedom struggle in the USA. His background as son of migrants from Trinidad and Tobago also gives an indication on the international dimension of the Black Power movement. Black Power was informed by the ideas of Afro-diasporic intellectuals and Pan-Africanists such as W.E.B. DuBois, Marcus Garvey, Frantz Fanon, and Malcolm X. Deeply rooted in practices of Black transnationalism, Black Power heralded a new era of African American defiance, militancy, and cultural awareness, which transcended the U.S. and left its footprints throughout the Hemisphere, providing marginalized communities beyond national and cultural boundaries with meaningful symbols of resistance and self-affirmation in the face of racial oppression. Black Power's hemispheric impact encouraged the emergence of musical genres, antiracist movements, and border-crossing networks of solidarity among Afro-descendants in the Caribbean, Latin and North America, and continues to be a source of inspiration for the political and cultural expressions of the Black Americas in the 21st century as manifested by the Black Lives Matter movement. This compilation of essays by scholars and activists intends to fill an important gap by addressing Black Power within a historical, polyvocal and multi-locational approach shedding light on manifestations of Black Power from Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Jamaica, Panama, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, the United States and their entanglements"--

    Abstract: In Markets of Civilization Muriam Haleh Davis provides a history of racial capitalism, showing how Islam became a racial category that shaped economic development in colonial and postcolonial Algeria. French officials in Paris and Algiers introduced what Davis terms "a racial regime of religion" that subjected Algerian Muslims to discriminatory political and economic structures. These experts believed that introducing a market economy would modernize society and discourage anticolonial nationalism. Planners, politicians, and economists implemented reforms that both sought to transform Algerians into modern economic subjects and drew on racial assumptions despite the formally color-blind policies of the French state. Following independence, convictions about the inherent link between religious beliefs and economic behavior continued to influence development policies. Algerian president Ahmed Ben Bella embraced a specifically Algerian socialism founded on Islamic principles, while French technocrats saw Algeria as a testing ground for development projects elsewhere in the Global South. Highlighting the entanglements of race and religion, Davis demonstrates that economic orthodoxies helped fashion understandings of national identity on both sides of the Mediterranean during decolonization

    Abstract: Many governments face similar pressures surrounding the hotly debated topic of immigration. Yet, the disparate ways in which policy makers respond is striking. The Comparative Politics of Immigration explains why democratic governments adopt the immigration policies they do. Through an in-depth study of immigration politics in Germany, Canada, Switzerland, and the United States, Antje Ellermann examines the development of immigration policy from the postwar era to the present. The book presents a new theory of immigration policymaking grounded in the political insulation of policy makers. Three types of insulation shape the translation of immigration preference into policy: popular insulation from demands of the unorganized public, interest group insulation from the claims of organized lobbies, and diplomatic insulation from the lobbying of immigrant-sending states. Addressing the nuances in immigration reforms, Ellermann analyzes both institutional factors and policy actors' strategic decisions to account for cross-national and temporal variation.

    Abstract: In Show Time, Lee Ann Fujii asks why some perpetrators of political violence, from lynch mobs to genocidal killers, display their acts of violence so publicly and extravagantly. Closely examining three horrific and extreme episodes-the murder of a prominent Tutsi family amidst the genocide in Rwanda, the execution of Muslim men in a Serb-controlled village in Bosnia during the Balkan Wars, and the lynching of a twenty-two-year old Black farmhand on Maryland's Eastern Shore in 1933-Fujii shows how "violent displays" are staged to not merely to kill those perceived to be enemies or threats, but also to affect and influence observers, neighbors, and the larger society. Watching and participating in these violent displays profoundly transforms those involved, reinforcing political identities, social hierarchies, and power structures. Such public spectacles of violence also force members of the community to choose sides-openly show support for the goals of the violence, or risk becoming victims, themselves. Tracing the ways in which public displays of violence unfold, Show Time reveals how the perpetrators exploit the fluidity of social ties for their own ends.

    Abstract: The origins and development of the modern American emergency stateFrom pandemic disease, to the disasters associated with global warming, to cyberattacks, today we face an increasing array of catastrophic threats. It is striking that, despite the diversity of these threats, experts and officials approach them in common terms: as future events that threaten to disrupt the vital, vulnerable systems upon which modern life depends.The Government of Emergency tells the story of how this now taken-for-granted way of understanding and managing emergencies arose. Amid the Great Depression, World War II, and the Cold War, an array of experts and officials working in obscure government offices developed a new understanding of the nation as a complex of vital, vulnerable systems. They invented technical and administrative devices to mitigate the nation’s vulnerability, and organized a distinctive form of emergency government that would make it possible to prepare for and manage potentially catastrophic events.Through these conceptual and technical inventions, Stephen Collier and Andrew Lakoff argue, vulnerability was defined as a particular kind of problem, one that continues to structure the approach of experts, officials, and policymakers to future emergencies
