    Abstract: The concept of the generation in today's German culture and literature, and its role in German identity. In the debates since 1945 on German history and culture, the concept of generations has become ever more prominent. Recent and ongoing shifts in how the various generations are seen -- and see themselves -- in relation to historyand to each other have taken on key importance in contemporary German cultural studies. The seismic events of twentieth-century German history are no longer solely first-generational lived experiences but are also historical moments seen through the eyes of successor generations. The generation, seen as a category of memory, thus holds a key to major shifts in German identity. The changing generational perspectives of German writers and filmmakers not onlyreflect but also influence these trends, exposing both the expected differences between generational views and unexpected continuities. Moreover, as younger artists reframe recent history, older generations like the 1968ers are also contributing to these shifts by reassessing their own experiences and cultural contributions. This volume of new essays applies current discourse on generations in German culture to contemporary works dealing with major sociohistorical events since the Nazi period. Muslim tombstones are not only understood as an expression of the individuality of the deceased created by their family and loved ones; they are also the result of the expectations of the diverse representatives of the majority within society.

    Abstract: "This book interrogates the patterns and discursive structures that have generated the seeming urgency of Muslims' integration. Focusing on Germany, it problematizes the grounds on which politics of integration are justified and reasoned upon, and thereby investigates divergent operations of power vis-à-vis Muslims and Islam in a formally liberal-secular society. The integration paradigm in Germany has been predicated on an imperial knowledge regime, in which Islam figures as the external friend or enemy of an imagined Christian secular. This book analyzes three kinds of integration practices as symptomatic sites for the multifaceted dimensions of power in this paradigm: the scientific measurement of Muslims' degrees of integration which are correlated with their degrees of religiosity; the politics of recognition promoted by state-organized dialogue with Muslims; and the threat of sanction, found in the regulations of citizenship and explicitly in citizenship tests. Centrally, the book argues that the paradigm of integration navigates between universalist claims and particularistic-racial and religious-reenactments of a secular nation-state framework at moments in which this very framework is crumbling."

    Abstract: Kautschuk war das wichtigste Exportprodukt Kameruns, denn um 1900 steckte Kautschuk bzw. Gummi weltweit in Dichtungen, Reifen, Kabeln und zahlreichen Gegenständen des Alltags. Die starke Nachfrage nach diesem Rohstoff löste zwischen 1890 und 1913 einen globalen Kautschukboom aus, der auch die deutsche Kolonie Kamerun prägte. Dieses Buch ist die erste Studie, die die tatsächlichen Arbeitsbeziehungen in einer afrikanischen Kautschukökonomie analysiert. Das koloniale Geschäft mit Kautschuk war keineswegs nur auf Zwang und Gewalt gebaut. Vielmehr nutzten Afrikanerinnen und Afrikaner die Nachfrage nach Kautschuk und Arbeitskräften für ihre eigene soziale Mobilität. Europäische Unternehmen konnten auf eine Vielzahl von ganz unterschiedlicher Arbeitsformen zurückgreifen, welche die Afrikaner und Afrikanerinnen selbst auch für ihre eigenen Interessen nutzten. Was entstand, war eine koloniale Arbeiterschaft, die die europäischen Arbeitgeber wie auch die afrikanischen Gesellschaften herausforderte

    Abstract: -- Annika Lems joined the Institute of Social Anthropology in 2015 to participate in the Swiss National Science Foundation's project "Transnational Biographies of Education: Young Unaccompanied Asylum Seekers and their Navigation through Shifting Social Realities in Switzerland and Turkey." Her book is strengthened by her work in this collaborative storytelling project and the extensive periods of participant observation that gave her insight into how young people navigate their ways through landscapes of extreme uncertainty and change. -- The Indiana University Worlds in Crisis series is a newly established series at IU Press and will be a hub for groundbreaking work on the causes of, experiences within, and responses to forced migration. Focusing on refugees, internally displaced people, asylum seekers and the aid system that surrounds them, the series will move beyond mere pathos to investigate the complexity of lived experiences of displacement. -- This is a strong contribution to the WIC series' focus on the everyday lives of refugees, in this case unaccompanied minors, and its aim to explore the complexity of their lived experiences of displacement, inclusion, and exclusion. -- The audience includes students and scholars studying forced migration, refugee studies, asylum seekers, refugee education, and the anthropology of education more broadly.

    Abstract: A proposal that we think about digital technologies such as machine learning not in terms of artificial intelligence but as artificial communication. Algorithms that work with deep learning and big data are getting so much better at doing so many things that it makes us uncomfortable. How can a device know what our favorite songs are, or what we should write in an email? Have machines become too smart? In Artificial Communication, Elena Esposito argues that drawing this sort of analogy between algorithms and human intelligence is misleading. If machines contribute to social intelligence, it will not be because they have learned how to think like us but because we have learned how to communicate with them. Esposito proposes that we think of “smart” machines not in terms of artificial intelligence but in terms of artificial communication. To do this, we need a concept of communication that can take into account the possibility that a communication partner may be not a human being but an algorithm—which is not random and is completely controlled, although not by the processes of the human mind. Esposito investigates this by examining the use of algorithms in different areas of social life. She explores the proliferation of lists (and lists of lists) online, explaining that the web works on the basis of lists to produce further lists; the use of visualization; digital profiling and algorithmic individualization, which personalize a mass medium with playlists and recommendations; and the implications of the “right to be forgotten.” Finally, she considers how photographs today seem to be used to escape the present rather than to preserve a memory.

    Abstract: Unter den zahlreichen Arbeitsmigranten, die in den 1960ern und 1970ern nach Deutschland zugewandert sind, waren auch Kroaten. Mehrere Hunderttausend Menschen kroatischer Herkunft sind in Deutschland geblieben und leben dort noch heute. Die Studie umfasst rund vierzig Jahre der multilokalen Lebensweise verschiedener Generationen. Ihr Leben hat sich zwischen zwei Orten, einem im Herkunftsland und anderem im Aufnahmeland, abgespielt und oft werden beide als Zuhause angesehen. Die Selbstaussagen der Migranten und ihrer Nachkommen thematisieren ihre Sicherheitswünsche und Rückkehrpläne, Familienstrukturen, Formen der lokalen Eingliederung und Zugehörigkeitsgefühle. Die Studie bietet einen neuen Blick auf die kroatische Migration nach Deutschland und eröffnet neue Perspektiven auf die Frage nach Integration von Zuwanderern allgemein.

    Abstract: Seit Gründung der DDR griff die SED massiv in städtische Belange ein. Die Abschaffung kommunaler Selbstverwaltung sowie eine zentrale Bau-, Kultur- und Geschichtspolitik bedeuteten den offenen Bruch mit urbanen Traditionen. Städte, einst Orte bürgerlicher Selbstverwaltung, sollten nun in einer sozialistischen, antibürgerlichen Gesellschaft aufgehen. Das städtische Selbstverständnis und lokale Erinnerungsbestände erwiesen sich allerdings immer wieder als resistent gegenüber parteipolitischen Vorgaben. Deutungs- und Gestaltungsanspruch der Staatspartei waren in den historisch gewachsenen Städten nicht widerstandslos durchzusetzen. Besonders bei den in der Bevölkerung beliebten Stadtjubiläen, wo SED und Stadtgesellschaft ihre Werte und Normen gleichermaßen inszenieren wollten, trafen staatliche und städtische Bedürfnisse nach Selbstdarstellung direkt aufeinander. Die Studie untersucht das Spannungsfeld von stadtbürgerlichem Eigensinn und absolutem Herrschaftsanspruch der SED vor dem Hintergrund der lokalen Jubiläumskultur in der DDR. Gefragt wird, inwiefern die Städte der Idee einer sozialistischen Gesellschaft folgten und ob kommunale Selbstdarstellung von Nähe oder von Distanz zur SED-Ideologie zeugte. Die Studie analysiert eine große Zahl von Fallbeispielen auch über Sachsen hinaus und erlaubt anhand der Untersuchung der Einflussnahme auf den jeweiligen Stadtraum valide Rückschlüsse auf das komplexe Herrschafts- und Gesellschaftssystem der DDR.

    Abstract: Mitte Mai 2021 wurde von den Sonderbeauftragten Deutschlands und Namibias als Ergebnis von neun Verhandlungsrunden seit Ende 2015 ein "Versöhnungsabkommen" paraphiert. Als bislang einzigartigen Schritt einer ehemaligen Kolonialmacht erkennt dieses Abkommen den in Südwestafrika verübten Völkermord politisch und moralisch an. Die vereinbarte "Geste der Anerkennung" wird seither in beiden Ländern kontrovers diskutiert. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt dieser Band die verschiedenen Perspektiven vor und lässt dabei unterschiedliche Stimmen aus Politik, Zivilgesellschaft und Kultur in Deutschland und die Sicht der Betroffenen in Namibia zu Wort kommen. Damit soll die Bandbreite der Meinungen und Versuche zur Bearbeitung der kolonialen Hinterlassenschaften am Beispiel des deutsch-namibischen Beziehungsgeflechts, aber auch im Umgang mit der Erinnerung an Massengewalt und Genozid in der Geschichte insgesamt dokumentiert werden.

    Abstract: While the nation-state gave rise to the advent of museums, its influence in times of transculturality and post-/decolonial studies appears to have vanished. But is this really the case? With case studies from various geo- and sociopolitical contexts from around the globe, the contributors investigate which roles the nation-state continues to play in museums, collections, and heritage. They answer the question to which degree the nation-state still determines practices of collection and circulation and its amount of power to shape contemporary narratives. The volume thus examines the contradictions at play when the necessary claim for transculturality meets the institutions of the nation-state.With contributions by Stanislas Spero Adotevi, Sebastián Eduardo Dávila, Natasha Ginwala, Monica Hanna, Rajkamal Kahlon, Suzana Milevska, Mirjam Shatanawi, Kavita Singh, Ruth Stamm, Andrea Witcomb.
