    Abstract: Essays on Marxism and Asia begins with the largely forgotten prophet of ancient Iran Zarathushtra, remembered and immortalised by Friedrich Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra. In contrast to the infamous clash of civilisation thesis, this book argues for a humanist theory of civilisations and studies the Parsis or Persians who left Iran to settle in India and make it their home. It claims that Parsis, despite being a migrant community, took strength from their Persian heritage and civilisation and rose to become the architects of industrial modernity in India. This book locates this humanist theory in the larger genre of the Asiatic mode of production with caste as its sub- text. It then takes a phenomenological reading of caste in India and says that India is afflicted by a very strange illness called silent blindness' where humanity is silenced and blinded in front of the caste apparatus. It then analyzes how capitalism and modernity fashioned caste in the image of capitalism and how the Indian right- wing imagined its fascistic politics of race and racial superiority based on the image of caste hierarchy. The problem in India has been that the liberals could not take caste seriously so as to confront it and then annihilate this violent apartheid structure. This, the book argues, has led to the rise of fascism in India. The book concludes with positing two different strands of secularism, namely liberal or bourgeois secularism which merely separates religion and the state (but mixes these when required) and revolutionary secularism which humanises religion and politics first in order to find the human and class content in both. In doing so, the authors surface the feelings of strangeness and challenges to norms of practice that were part of many people's experiences, highlighting the profound affective responses that accompanied the disruption to usual cultural forms of sociality and ritual in the wake of the COVID outbreak and restrictions on movement. Exploring the meanings and politics of memory contests in Turkey, the book asks what it means for museums to imbue the past with political agendas through spectacular, emotive representations. Providing an in-depth examination of emotional practice in two Turkish museums that present contrasting representations of the national past, the book analyses relationships between memory, governmentality, identity and emotion. The museums discussed celebrate Ottoman and Early Republican pasts, linking to geo- and party politics, people's senses of who they are, popular memory culture, and competing national stories and identities vis-à-vis Europe and the wider world.     Abstract: Das vorliegende Buch erklärt mithilfe des Konzepts der emotionalen Qualität einer Politikidee, weshalb die deutsche Bevölkerung die Rente mit 67 stärker ablehnte als andere, ebenso einschneidende Rentenreformen. Dafür werden zunächst die Geschichte des Reformvorhabens (der Politikidee) rekonstruiert, die Umstände der Verabschiedung des Reformgesetzes analysiert und dessen Abstraktionsgrad bestimmt. Den Mittelpunkt des Arguments bildet die diskurslinguistische Mehr-Ebenen-Analyse der Topoi in den Rechtfertigungen der Regierung für ihr Reformhandeln. Der Autor kommt zu dem Schluss, dass die von Politik und Bevölkerung in Deutschland althergebrachte Ablehnung des späteren Ruhestands nicht mehr kurzfristig durch eine Post-Entscheidungskommunikation der Regierung aufzubrechen war. Der Autor Marcus Zachäus ist als Lehrkraft für besondere Aufgaben am Institut für Soziologie der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen tätig und forscht im Bereich der Politischen Soziologie und politischen Kommunikation.

    Abstract: This book discusses the interrelationship between practices of collective self-interpretation, in this case national identity construction, and integration policies, using the example of Denmark and Sweden. Though both countries are considered to be socially progressive and modern, not least by themselves, the author makes the novel and provocative argument that both Denmark and Sweden are caught in a (discourse) paradox when it comes to integration policy, which stands in the way of successful immigrant integration. The author uses an innovative approach to reconstruct the Danish and the Swedish national identity by using social studies schoolbooks and novels as research material, thereby adding an interdisciplinary dimension to the book. About the author Marilena Geugjes is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Applied Sciences in Wiesbaden, Germany. She earned her doctorate in Political Science at Heidelberg University. Her research focuses on migration and integration policy, local politics, and the role of the police. .

Ebenso wird das Wohnen in institutionellen und gemeinschaftlichen Kontexten thematisiert. Obwohl soziologisch ausgerichtet, wird dieses Handbuch von Autor*innen aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen getragen. Adopting a comparative approach, the author explores different processes of identity construction across several age and ethnic minority groups, to develop a theory of European identities in which ethnic identities can be seen as a missing link in explaining relationships between different national, regional and supranational identities.     Abstract: "As China Studies has grown as a discipline, it has also tended to be dominated by the major international powers, particularly China itself, and the USA. It is important to remember, however, that there is a rich and diverse history of China Studies elsewhere, especially in Southeast Asia. The Philippines is one such country. China studies experts from the Philippines encompass a broad spectrum of individuals, including activists and social workers, as well as university experts, think tank analysts, diplomats and journalists, and thus contribute a valuable new perspective. This book seeks to therefore provide a deeper understanding of the Philippine approach to China, revealing the unique and complex connections between China Studies, ethnic studies, and policy studies. It highlights that the Philippines, as an epistemological site, complicates China as a category and Sinology as an academic agenda. Thus, the community can embrace nuances in research, as well as in life, to enable reconsideration and reconciliation of binaries.     Abstract: Corinna Oschatz zeigt am Beispiel des Klimawandels, was Rezipienten aus den Medien über Politik lernen. Anhand eines Mehrmethodendesigns aus einer Inhaltsanalyse und einer zweiwelligen Panelbefragung untersucht sie, wie die Medien über zentrale wissenschaftliche und politische Aspekte des Klimawandels berichten, welche Medien Rezipienten nutzen, um sich zu informieren, und zu welchen Aspekten sie Wissen erwerben. Die Befunde zeigen eine Schere zwischen der Berichterstattung und der Informationsnutzung: Während Onlinemedien am häufigsten über den Klimawandel berichten, informieren sich die Rezipienten vor allem in den öffentlich-rechtlichen Nachrichten und der Regionalpresse. Sie lernen insbesondere etwas über die Folgen des Klimawandels, wenn sie diesbezügliche Informationen in Printmedien nutzen.     Abstract: This edited collection offers an empirical exploration of social memory in the context of politics, war, identity and culture. With a substantive focus on Eastern Europe, it employs the methodologies of visual studies, content and discourse analysis, in-depth interviews and surveys to substantiate how memory narratives are composed and rewritten in changing ideological and political contexts. The book examines various historical events, including the Russian-Afghan war of 1979-89 and World War II, and considers public and local rituals, monuments and museums, textbook accounts, gender and the body. As such it provides a rich picture of post-socialist memory construction and function based in interdisciplinary memory studies.
