Was geschieht in ihren Köpfen?

Abstract: In this book we explore, simultaneously, both the social psychology of time and the temporal aspects of social psychological processes. The social psychology of time refers to how people understand time in their own cultural time and place, and how they make use of time in human social endeavors. The temporal aspects of social psychological processes refer to how temporal processes--some obvious, some little noticed--affect the social psychological processes and human actions through which people live out their lives. Chapters also cover how temporal factors play a fundamental and often overlooked role in many key methodological areas of psychology, including causality, internal and external validity, comparisons of empirical information gained by different research strategies, and theories of measurement and error. Abstract: This is the first book to bring together recent scholarship on the history of psychology and race. Throughout the history of the field, psychological discourse has been shaped by social concerns, and its discourse on race is no exception. Psychologists have both promoted and fought against racism, and a nuanced historical account requires analysis of both dimensions. The contributors seek to understand the relationship between the changes in the field and broader social change by mapping the changing discourse for "defining difference" through race. Topics covered include essentialism and the history of the concept of race, ideas of race in the work of nineteenth-century and twentieth-century psychologists, psychological discourse on topics such as "mixed-race" people, political uses of racial research, changes in textbook presentations of race and intelligence, and international perspectives on psychology and race. Contributors also examine the prominence and persistence of American research on racial differences in intelligence as well as the work of Kenneth Clark and Horace Mann Bond in combating racism in science and society. This important volume increases readers' understanding of the link between racial studies and social attitudes in our time. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved)

Abstract: Given business and industry's increased reliance on teams in organizational settings, it is critical that all those who are interested in improving training and performance better understand teams. During the past decade, cognitive science has substantially influenced the study of team performance. The contributors to this volume describe the many ways in which team cognition is being used as an organizing framework to guide research into factors that affect team performance. Abstract: In this collaboratively authored work, five distinguished sociologists develop an ambitious theoretical model of "cultural trauma"—and on this basis build a new understanding of how social groups interact with emotion to create new and binding understandings of social responsibility. Looking at the "meaning making process" as an open-ended social dialogue in which strikingly different social narratives vie for influence, they outline a strongly constructivist approach to trauma and apply this theoretical model in a series of extensive case studies, including the Nazi Holocaust, slavery in the United States, and September 11, 2001

Abstract: In helping establish a new field of study in the organizational sciences, POS, this book examines a variety of positive dynamics in businesses and organizations that give rise to extraordinary outcomes. Positive Organizational Scholarship does not adopt one particular theory or framework, but encompasses any phenomenon that leads to positive, nurturing results. Abstract: As scientists toil in the fields of their disciplines, they rarely enjoy opportunities to step back from their work and evaluate where their efforts have taken them. Assessing a field's scientific progress, however, is critical if it is to have any hope of making meaningful advances. The time has come for a systematic self-examination of the state of the field of organizational behavior. Where has it been? Where is it now? And where is it going? The present book poses these questions to raise the self-consciousness of organizational scholars, causing them to question the field's values

Abstract: How is it that cultures come into existence at all? How do cultures develop particular customs and characteristics rather than others? How do cultures persist and change over time? Most previous attempts to address these questions have been descriptive and historical. The purpose of this book is to provide answers that are explanatory, predictive, and relevant to the emergence and continuing evolution of cultures past, present, and future. Most other investigations into "cultural psychology" have focused on the impact that culture has on the psychology of the individual. The focus of this book is the reverse. The authors show how questions about the origins and evolution of culture can be fruitfully answered through rigorous and creative examination of fundamental characteristics of human cognition, motivation, and social interaction. They review recent theory and research that, in many different ways, points to the influence of basic psychological processes on the collective structures that define cultures. These processes operate in all sorts of different populations, ranging from very small interacting groups to grand-scale masses of people occupying the same demographic or geographic category. The cultural effects--often unintended--of individuals' thoughts and actions are demonstrated in a wide variety of customs, ritualized practices, and shared mythologies: for example, religious beliefs, moral standards, rules for the allocation of resources, norms for the acceptable expression of aggression, gender stereotypes, and scientific values. The Psychological Foundations of Culture reveals that the consequences of psychological processes resonate well beyond the disciplinary constraints of psychology. By taking a psychological approach to questions usually addressed by anthropologists, sociologists, and other social scientists, it suggests that...

Abstract: Ideas on sustainable development, examined by psychologists, sociologists, architects, and designers are presented in this text. Sustainable development involves satisfying the needs of the present generation without compromising the chances for future generations. Quality of life thus plays an important part in determining how we can achieve sustainable development. What are the perspectives for the 21st century? "People, Places and Sustainability" presents novel approaches to traditional issues of people-environment studies and environmental psychology, looked at in the light of sustainability. The contributions brought together in this book cover the main issues addressed by the International Association of People-Environment Studies (IAPS), which includes psychologists, sociologists, architects, and designers. The book is divided into four main sections, dealing with: urban change and sustainability; community attachment and identity; proximal and specific spaces; and global and environmental issues.

Abstract: The management of and communication about risks has become a major question of public policy and intellectual debate in the modern world. The social amplification of risk framework describes how both social and individual factors act to amplify or dampen perceptions of risk and through this create secondary effects such as stigmatisation of technologies, economic losses or regulatory impacts. This volume, edited by three of the world's leading analysts of risk and its communication, brings together contributions from a group of international experts working in the field of risk perception and risk communication. Key conceptual issues are discussed as well as a range of recent case studies (spanning BSE and food safety, AIDS/HIV, nuclear power, child protection, Y2K, electromagnetic fields, and waste incineration) that take forward the state-of-the-art in risk amplification theory. The volume also draws attention to lessons for public policy, risk management and risk communication practice

Abstract: This text presents an account of human development that looks at both the differences and similarities among cultures. Beyond demonstrating that "culture matters," Rogoff focuses on how culture matters in human development - what patterns help make sense of the cultural aspects of human development? Rogoff integrates research and theory from several disciplines, including cross-cultural psychology, sociocultural research, linguistic and psychological anthropology, and history. The volume examines multiple aspects of development, including childrearing, gender differences, interdependence and autonomy, developmental transitions, maternal attachment, parental discipline, and cognition and culture

Abstract: In this volume, gender is seen as a communicative achievement and as a social category interacting with other social parametres such as age, status, prestige, institutional and ethnic frameworks, cultural and situative contexts. The authors come from a variety of backgrounds such as sociology of communication, anthropological linguistics, sociolinguistics, social psychology, and text linguistics. Masculinity and femininity are conceived of as varying culturally, historically and contextually. All contributions discuss empirical research of communication and the question of whether (and how) ge

Abstract: The path adolescents take from childhood to adulthood is a product of social, economic, political, and technological forces. These forces may facilitate youth's preparation to become healthy adults, or they may leave youth unprepared for adulthood. Knowledgeable projections are vital in shaping the agenda for research; for alerting educators, policy makers, and practitioners to new issues; and for formulating thoughtful responses to emerging dilemmas. This book focuses upon the future of adolescence in postindustrial societies. The authors identify some ominous societal changes that will affect youth: unstable job markets, competition for public resources due to an aging population, and widening income gaps between 'information workers' and low-skill workers. But they also observe opportunities created by information technology, innovations in health service delivery and criminal-justice rehabilitation, and the resourcefulness of a new generation. This volume examines these and other macro-structural changes that will impact adolescents' lives and their futures as adults

Abstract: The relative deprivation construct has been widely used in the social sciences to explain phenomena from experiencing psychosomatic stress to participating in urban riots. It is currently a valuable tool in research, being used especially to understand processes of social identity and responses to disadvantage by both disadvantaged minorities and privileged majorities. Originally published in 2001, this book assembles chapters by leading relative deprivation researchers in order to present comprehensive synthesis of knowledge. Featuring integrative theoretical and empirical work from social psychology, sociology, and psychology, the book provides a highly detailed reference work. It is relevant to researchers in intergroup relations, prejudice, racism, social identity, group processes, social comparison, collective behavior, and social movements. The book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the topic and its practical application

Abstract: Between Culture and Biology brings together biological, psychological and cultural perspectives on development. It argues that the biological bases of behaviour and cultural context should be approached in an integrated fashion to properly understand ontogenetic development and that both the cultural and biological demain provide constraints and opportunities for development

Abstract: This work presents Sapir's most comprehensive statement on the concepts of culture, on method and theory in anthropology and other social sciences, on personality organization, and on the individual's place in culture and society. Extensive discussions on the role of language and other symbolic systems in culture, ethnographic method, and social interaction are also included. Ethnographic and linguistic examples are drawn from Sapir's fieldwork among native North Americans and from European and American society as well. Edward Sapir (1884-1939), one of this century's leading figures in American anthropology and linguistics, planned to publish a major theoretical state - ment on culture and psychology. He developed his ideas in a course of lectures presented at Yale University in the 1930s, which attracted a wide audience from many social science disciplines. Unfortunately, he died before the book he had contracted to publish could be realized. Like de Saussure's Cours de Linguistique Générale before it, this work has been reconstructed from student notes, in this case twentytwo sets, as well as from Sapir's manuscript materials. Judith Irvine's meticulous reconstruction makes Sapir's compelling ideas - of surprisingly contemporary resonance - available for the first time.

Abstract: Human dignity, the ability to establish a sense of self-worth and self-respect and to enjoy the respect of others, is necessary for a fully realized life. Working with dignity is a fundamental part of achieving a life well-lived, yet the workplace often poses challenging obstacles because of mismanagement or managerial abuse. Defending dignity and realizing self-respect through work are key to workers' well-being; insuring the dignity of employees is equally important for organizations as they attempt to make effective use of their human capital. In this book Randy Hodson, a sociologist of work and organizational behavior, applies ethnographic and statistical approaches to this topic, offering both a richly detailed, inside look at real examples of dignity in action, and a broader analysis of the pivotal role of dignity at work
Abstract: Four faces of working with dignity -- Toward a theory of dignity -- Measuring the subtle realms of work -- Deflecting abuse and mismanagement -- Avoiding overwork -- Defending autonomy -- Negotiating employee involvement -- Coworkers, for better or worse -- Worker dignity and well-being -- Dignity, agency, and the future of work

Abstract: Fuses the work of scholars in educational, developmental, clinical, social, and personality psychology in this exploration of the question "How can constructive and prosocial behavior be promoted and destructive and antisocial behavior be controlled?" This collection of empirically grounded chapters explores theory and experimental findings on what influences prosocial and antisocial expression, adding to the debates about whether media violence causes real violence or whether catharsis is good. This text aims to give scientists and practitioners a new perspective on the context within which these behaviors thrive: how empathy develops, how self-control in childhood predicts adult behavior, how age and sex influence bullying, whether early intervention can prevent delinquency, and how school success lays the groundwork for constructive lives. Abstract: We are spurred into action by our troubles and fears; but all too often our action fails to address the true causes of our worries. When trying to make sense of our lives, we tend to blame our own failings and weaknesses for our discomforts and defeats. And in doing so, we make things worse rather than better. Reasonable beings that we are, how does this happen and why does it go on happening?〈br /〉 〈br /〉 〈br /〉 These are the questions addressed in this new book by Zygmunt Bauman - one of the most original and perceptive social thinkers writing today. Abstract: Rulers of all kinds, from feudal monarchs to democratic presidents and prime ministers, justify themselves to themselves through a variety of rituals, rhetoric, and dramatisations, using everything from architecture and coinage to etiquette and portraiture. This kind of legitimation - self-legitimation - has been overlooked in an age which is concerned principally with how government can be justified in the eyes of its citizens. In this book, Rodney Barker argues that at least as much time is spent by rulers legitimating themselves in their own eyes, and cultivating their own sense of identity, as is spent in trying to convince ordinary subjects. Once this dimension of ruling is taken into account, a far fuller understanding can be gained of what rulers are doing when they rule. It can also open the way to a more complete grasp of what subjects are doing, both when they obey and when they rebel

Intended for students from undergraduate level upwards, the book provides a wide-ranging overview of the cultural perspective on human development, with illustrations from pre-natal development to adulthood.
