    Abstract: Was migration to Germany a blessing or a curse? The main argument of this book is that the Greek state conceived labor migration as a traineeship into Europeanization with its shiny varnish of progress. Jumping on a fully packed train to West Germany meant leaving the past behind. However, the tensed Cold War realities left no space for illusions; specters of the Nazi past and the Greek Civil War still haunted them all. Adopting a transnational approach, this monograph retargets attention to the sending state by exploring how the Greek Gastarbeiter’s welfare was intrinsically connected with their homeland through its exercise of long-distance nationalism. Apart from its fresh take in postwar migration, the book also addresses methodological challenges in creative ways. The narrative alternates between the macro- and the micro-level, including subnational and transnational actors and integrating a diverse set of primary sources and voices. Avoiding the trap of exceptionalism, it contextualizes the Greek case in the Mediterranean and Southeast European experience

    Abstract: This book offers a critical analysis of global mobilities across China and Italy in history. In three periods in the twentieth century, new patterns of physical mobilities and cultural contact were established between the two countries which were either novel at the time of their emergence or impactful on subsequent periods. The first two chapters provide overviews of writings by Italians in China and by Chinese in Italy in the twentieth century. The remaining chapters cover: Republican Chinas relationships with Italy and Italian Fascist colonialism in China during the 1920s1930s; Italian travelers to China during the Cold War from the 1950s to the 1970s; migrations between China and Italy during the 2000s2010s. In analyzing these cultural mobilities, this book opens a new line of inquiry in Chinese-Italian Cultural Studies, which has been dominated by historical study, and contributes a significant case study to the scholarship on global cultural mobilities

    Abstract: This thesis contributes to our understanding of the increasing polarization of societies. The first chapter focuses on immigration inflows as driver of polarization.     Abstract: Detroit’s shrinking size has resulted in an overabundance of single-family homes in this single-family home metropolis. On the one hand, the abandoned houses have led to Detroit being declared bankrupt, while on the other hand, it has paved the way for other ways of working and living with and using houses and vacant lots that may not make an immediate profit on the real estate market and may be considered “unreal” estate (Herscher, 2012), but that keep people together as a neighborhood and community. This thesis looks at the circumstances in which residents become homeowners and how as homeowners, artists and immigrants ascribe value to single-family homes and how they make place with their homes in a neighborhood context. The focus is on homeowners’ everyday practices that determine the value of single-family homes when the latter is not considered use value or economic value in a real estate market, but recognized as a social and cultural value.

    Abstract: This book explores the interaction between three key aspects of everyday life-language, writing, and mobility -with particular focus on their effects on language contact. While the book adopts an established view of language and society that is in keeping with the sociolinguistic paradigm developed in recent decades, it differs from earlier studies in that it assigns writing a central position. Sociolinguistics has long concentrated primarily on speech,but Florian Coulmas shows in this volume that the social importance of writing should not be disregarded: it is the most consequential technology ever invented; it suggests stability; and it defines borders. Linguistic studies have often emphasized that writing is external to language, but thediscipline nevertheless owes its analytic categories to writing. Finally, the digital revolution has fundamentally changed communication patterns, transforming the social functions of writing and consequently also of language

    Abstract: Traditional wage labor has experienced a significant decline in industrialized countries over the past few decades. The spread of temporary work, the proliferation of subcontracting arrangements, the use of artificial intelligence (AI), the shipment of manufacturing jobs overseas, and the employment of foreign contract workers are among the key factors driving this decline. The result is a rise of labor insecurity and fragmentation among increasingly diverse forms of flexible labor arrangements. This book examines this important transformation by considering the impact of foreign contract labor on temporary migrant workers in their places of employment and home communities. It assesses work as a source of value in capitalist, reproductive, domestic, and cultural economics, and argues for a new, work-centric field of economics. Rich in examples, it is a sophisticated anthropological appreciation of the many forms that work can take and what these forms mean for the creation of value in people's lives

    Abstract: How do parents cooperate with each other, what value do they attach to their interaction and how is the degree of cooperation related to social status? The study takes a close look at the social relationships among various groups of Chinese parents at a Chinese Mandarin language school in a metropolitan city in Germany. Taking an ethnographic approach, it captures a vivid picture of the parental social interactions in and outside the Chinese school setting. The study reveals the significance of social interactions, discussing it in relation to the parents’ socioeconomic backgrounds and individual migrant trajectories.

    Abstract: Die Identität von Migrant*innen und ihre Zugehörigkeit zu einer Minderheit oder zur Mehrheitsgesellschaft ist ein kontroverses politisches Thema, das Einblicke in die Herausforderungen der Integration und des sozialen Zusammenhalts bietet. Ausgehend von einem zweidimensionalen Modell der ethnischen Identität fragt das Buch nach der Rolle des sozialen Status für die Identifikation von Migrant*innen mit ihrer Herkunftsgruppe und der Mehrheitsbevölkerung. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf Unterschieden zwischen den Generationen, der Sichtbarkeit von Migrant*innen, der Diskrepanz zwischen den Status und der Situation im Aufnahmeland. Die Ergebnisse zeigen Formen ethnischer Identität, die über die klassische Annahme der gegenseitigen Ausschließlichkeit hinausgehen, was auf eine Minderheitenidentität bei Migrant*innen mit niedrigem Status und eine Mehrheitsidentität bei Migranten mit hohem Status hindeutet. Migrants’ minority and majority identity are controversial political topics, which disclose challenges of integration and social cohesion. Based on a two-dimensional model of ethnic identity, the book asks about the role of social status for migrants’ identification with their origin group and the majority population. It focuses on intergenerational differences, migrant visibility, status mismatch, and exposure in the receiving country. Results reveal forms of ethnic identity beyond the classical assumption of mutual exclusiveness, which suggests that minority identity primarily relates to lower status positions and majority identity to higher status positions.The book thus contributes to the important discussion about migrant assimilation and alternative forms of incorporation.

Vereinfachte und deterministische Annahmen, wonach der Klimawandel Massenmigration verursacht und Einwanderung Ressourcenknappheit und Konflikte fördert, haben Narrative von Migration als Sicherheitsrisiko erzeugt. Forschung in diesem Feld zeigt jedoch, dass die jeweiligen Zusammenhänge komplex und kontextspezifisch sind. Diese Dissertation integriert umfangreiche Fallstudiendaten und trägt somit zu einem generischen Verständnis und überregionalen Bild des Umwelt-Migrations-Nexus bei. Der Fokus liegt auf den Mechanismen, durch die Umweltwandel menschliche Mobilität beeinflusst, der relativen Bedeutung von Migration als Anpassungsstrategie, und den Kontexten, die Ressourcenkonflikte in Zielregionen fördern. Die Ergebnisse widerlegen deterministische und vereinfachte Annahmen und betonen die Schlüsselrolle von sozialen und politischen Faktoren auf multiplen Skalen.
    Abstract: The dynamics between environmental change and human migration have become a highly politicised and debated topic. Simplified and deterministic assumptions of climate change causing mass migration and of immigration promoting resource scarcity and conflict have generated alarmist narratives of migration as security threat. However, scientific evidence shows that environment-migration linkages are complex and context-specific. By integrating rich data from local case studies, this dissertation contributes to a generic understanding and trans-regional picture on the environment-migration nexus. It focuses on the mechanisms through which the environment influences human mobility, the role and relative significance of migration as an adaptation strategy, and the contexts which are conducive to resource conflicts in migrant-receiving areas. The findings refute deterministic and simplistic assumptions and underline the crucial mediating role of social and political factors at various scales.

    Abstract: At the dawn of the new millennium, immigration means a new beginning for many Cabo Verdean youth who arrive in Boston, Massachusetts. This new generation of Cabo Verdeans, however, faces different sets of challenges—ranging from family separation and reunification, to emerging street violence, to “sweeps” that culminate in deportation. This book chronicles the journey of Cabo Verdean young men as they negotiate their feelings around family, school, and neighborhood contexts. Ambrizeth Helena Lima discusses in depth the factors within these contexts that compel some of the young men to thrive and succeed, and others to spiral into a cycle of violence and eventual deportation. Lima also shows the young men’s vulnerability in their urban neighborhoods, as one of them declares that in this journey “you’re on your own.” The young men in her book discuss their dreams, love for their family and culture, and the struggle to become “American.” As with other racialized immigrant youth from places as diverse as the Caribbean and South Asia, these young men face racial, ethnic, and gender stereotypes that are grounded in America’s white/black racial rationalization process. Their journey is marked with emotional and psychological upheaval as they strive to find a path that leads to the better life that America promised them

Puritan leaders believed firmly that nations, colonies and towns were all 'bodies politic', that is, living and organic social bodies. However, if a social body became distempered because of scarce resources or political or religious discord, it became necessary to create a new social body from the old in order to restore balance and harmony. The new social body was articulated through the social ritual of land distribution according to Aristotelian 'distributive justice'. The book will trace this process at work in the founding of Ipswich and its satellite town in Massachusetts

    Abstract: How to study a media object on the web that is at the same time a documentary, a reportage, and a game which combines both fiction and non-fiction elements? Nicole Braida digs into the discursive and material structures and infrastructures of serious games, text-adventures, newsgames, interactive maps and data visualizations, in which refugees and migrants become the subject of humanitarian discourse. Although the goal is to arouse empathy towards migrants, these »interactive practices« distinguish who is vulnerable and who is not. It supports the idea of a »migratory crisis«, which, the author argues, is actually the symptom of a deeper crisis of the humanitarian system itself.

Er fragt nach Transfers und Wechselwirkungen maritimer Aktivitäten. Alle diese Fragen rücken gerade das in den Mittelpunkt, was zwischen den landbasierten Machtzentren lag. Der Band bestimmt damit die Frühe Neuzeit als maritime Epoche.

    Abstract: The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) is the central executive authority on migration and integration policy in Germany. Vinzenz Kratzer analyses the Federal Office's research output between 2005 and 2015 with a joint perspective of Ethnography and Political Science. In the wake of political reforms after the »paradigm change« around the turn of the millennium, the development of practically relevant knowledge can be traced. While governmental researchers were able to establish themselves in the bureaucracy with some success, they bought this influence with uncontroversial, depoliticized knowledge production, while the production of seemingly politically irrelevant knowledge - most importantly on racism and discrimination - is underdeveloped.

    Abstract: "In China, strong economic growth over the past four decades, accelerated urbanisation and multiple inequalities between urban and rural worlds have driven the escalation of internal and international migrations. The internal migration of workers represents a unique phenomenon since the reform and opening of China. Less-qualified young migrants are living in subaltern conditions and young migrant graduates have strongly internalised the idea of being the "heroes" of the new Chinese society in a context of emotional capitalism. But internal and international migrations intersect and intertwine, young internal and international migrants from China produce economic cosmopolitanisms in Chinese society and through top-down, bottom-up and intermediary globalisation. The young Chinese migrant incarnates the Global Individual, what we labeled here as the Compressed Individual"--

    Abstract: With thousands of migrants attempting the perilous maritime journey from North Africa to Europe each year, transnational migration is a defining feature of social life in the Mediterranean today. On the island of Sicily, where many migrants first arrive and ultimately remain, the contours of migrant reception and integration are frequently animated by broader concerns for human rights and social justice. Island of Hope sheds light on the emergence of social solidarity initiatives and networks forged between citizens and noncitizens who work together to improve local livelihoods and mobilize for radical political change. Basing her argument on years of ethnographic fieldwork with frontline communities in Sicily, anthropologist Megan Carney asserts that such mobilizations hold significance not only for the rights of migrants, but for the material and affective well-being of society at large.
