    Abstract: "Superdiversity explores processes of diversification and the complex, emergent social configurations that now supersede prior forms of diversity in societies around the world. Migration plays a key role in these processes, bringing changes not just in social, cultural, religious and linguistic phenomena, but also in the ways that these phenomena combine with others like gender, age and legal status. The concept of superdiversity has been adopted by scholars across the social sciences in order to address a variety of forms, modes and outcomes of diversification. Central to this field is the relationship between social categorization and social organization, including stratification and inequality. Increasingly complex categories of social "difference" have significant impacts across scales, from entire societies to individual identities. While diversification is often met with simplifying stereotypes, threat narratives, and expressions of antagonism, superdiversity encourages a perspective on difference as comprising multiple social processes, flexible collective meanings, and overlapping personal and group identities. A superdiversity approach encourages the re-evaluation and recognition of social categories as multidimensional, unfixed and porous as opposed to views based on hardened, one-dimensional thinking about groups. Diversification and increasing social complexity are bound to continue, if not intensify, in light of climate change. This will have profound impacts on the nature of global migration, social relations and inequalities. Superdiversity presents a convincing case for recognizing new social formations created by changing migration patterns and calls for a re-thinking of public policy and social scientific approaches to social difference. This introduction to the multidisciplinary concept of superdiversity will be of considerable interest to students and researchers in a range of fields in the humanities and social sciences"--

    Abstract: How do refugee women live, what resources do they have and what challenges do they face? This book provides insights into the lives of female refugees in Austria, who are growing in number but remain largely invisible in public discourse. Drawing on data from a mixed-methods survey, the authors analyse refugees’ social contacts, education and educational aspirations, participation in the labour market, experiences of discrimination and the role of the family and family work in successful integration. Figures, data and facts are presented in great detail and contrasted with personal accounts. This book serves as a guide to countering prejudices and fostering peaceful coexistence in our modern migration society.

Das Lehrbuch richtet sich an Studierende, Dozierende und Forschende ebenso wie an PraktikerInnen der Migrationsarbeit.     Abstract: This publication presents the results of a study on the integration of refugees into education, training and work in Berlin. The research is based on qualitative interviews with refugees and representa-tives of schools, companies, civil society projects and administrative bodies. The study analyses factors that both support and hinder refugees’ integration into training and work, and discusses related measures of integration management.

    Abstract: Was bedeutet Migration für die Menschen, die an den Herkunftsorten bleiben? Die Studie rekonstruiert soziale Welten der Migration aus Perspektive der Herkunftsorte in Südmexiko. Sie basiert auf einer ethnographischen Untersuchung, die kollaborativ mit den Bewohner*innen indigener Dorfgemeinschaften in der südmexikanischen Region La Selva Lacandona durchgeführt und qualitativ ausgewertet wurde. Auf Grundlage dekolonialer, geschlechtertheoretischer und transnationaler Ansätze wird gezeigt, dass für die indigenen Dorfgemeinschaften Migration weniger eine Flucht vor den Verhältnissen der Armut und Marginalisierung bedeutet, sondern vielmehr die Möglichkeit bietet, das kommunale Leben am Herkunftsort aufrechtzuerhalten.

An ihren Identitätsentwürfen lässt sich ermessen, wie jüdisches Selbstverständnis in Deutschland aussehen wird. Maja Vataman zeigt mit ihrer Studie die Komplexität der Identitätskonstruktionen der sogenannten 1,5-Generation jüdischer Jugendlicher auf, die während ihrer Kindheit bzw. ihrer frühen Jugend aus ihrem Herkunftsland, der ehemaligen Sowjetunion, nach Deutschland migrierten. Den empirischen Kern der Studie stellen autobiographische Erzählungen und Lebensverläufe, die sequenzanalytisch anhand der objektiven Hermeneutik und biographischen Fallrekonstruktion ausgewertet werden, dar.
    Abstract: Who are the Jews that are shaping the present and future Jewish community in the Federal Republic? They are the children of the Russian-speaking quota refugees, and their draft identity can be used to measure what the Jewish self-image will look like in Germany. Maja Vataman's study shows the complex identity constructions of the so-called 1.5 generation of Jewish adolescents, who migrated to Germany from their country of origin, the former Soviet Union, during their childhood or early adolescence. Autobiographical narratives and life courses, which the author analyses sequentially using objective hermeneutics and biographical case reconstruction, form the empirical core of this study.

    Abstract: "Using detailed examples from Finland, Hungary, Canada and the UK, this book explores relationships between the racialization and discrimination experienced by heterogeneous European Roma populations, and the processes of everyday bordering embedded in state policies and media discourses. In the context of the long histories of discrimination experienced by Roma people across Europe, the chapters engage with changing EU policies, including the recent tensions between inter-European de-bordering and the selective immigration policies introduced as different states react to EU free movement. Employing an intersectional analysis, the authors capture the perspectives of differentially situated people and associated discourses to examine the continuing racism experienced by European Roma citizens in their interaction with bordering technologies. They examine the homogenizing 'racial othering and construction of Roma as a 'criminal category that co-exists with the differentiations made between 'indigenous and 'migrant Roma central to dominant bordering discourses and the contestations of different Roma populations. Chapters focus on Roma activism and the media, the exclusion of Roma residents via urban regeneration and welfare provision, and powerful media and political discourses about Roma populations in different national and transnational contexts.     Abstract: Das Ausbilden einer eigenen Identität ist ein lebenslanger Prozess. Jedes Individuum strebt danach, individuelle Merkmale auszuprägen, um sich von anderen abzugrenzen. Die vorliegende Dissertation analysiert das Integrationsverhalten chinesischer Zuwanderer in Berlin anhand einer Fallstudie, die interessante Erkenntnisse bringt: Die Zuwanderer fühlen die Notwendigkeit, ihre chinesische Identität zu rekonstruieren – allerdings mit dem Ziel, sich damit in Deutschland besser zu integrieren. Dies führt oft zu Konflikten innerhalb von Familien.
    Abstract: Developing one’s own identity is a lifelong process, and every individual endeavours to develop unique characteristics in order to differentiate themselves from others. Using a case study, this dissertation analyses how Chinese migrants in Berlin are integrating into German society and reveals some interesting findings: the migrants feel the need to reconstruct their Chinese identity in order to integrate better, and this often leads to conflicts between family members.

The volume challenges some of the myths surrounding the Roma as a 'problem population', and places the focus instead on the context of European policy and identity debates. It comes to the conclusion that the migration of Roma and the constitution of their communities is shaped by European policy as much as and often more so than by the cultural traits of the Roma themselves.     Abstract: "The book examines some of the dilemmas surrounding Europe's open borders, migrations, and identities through the prism of the Roma - Europe's most dispersed and socially marginalised population. The volume challenges some of the myths surrounding the Roma as a 'problem population', and places the focus instead on the context of European policy and identity debates. It comes to the conclusion that the migration of Roma and the constitution of their communities is shaped by European policy as much as and often more so than by the cultural traits of the Roma themselves. The chapters compare case studies of Roma migrants in Spain, Italy, France, and Britain, and the impact of migration on the origin communities in Romania. The study combines historical and ethnographic methods with insights from migration studies, drawing on a unique multi-site collaborative project that for the first time gave Roma participants a voice in shaping research into their communities."--Provided by publisher

    Abstract: The articles collected in this special issue of the SEER Journal deal with all the major channels of migration corresponding to different waves, from refugees and asylum seekers fleeing war, including civil war, and ethnic conflicts on the peripheries of the former Soviet Union, to the longer-term wave of people moving from the middle east and Asia to western Europe, passing through central and eastern European countries in transit.     Abstract: Migration war immer ein wichtiger Aspekt der Geschichte der europäischen Integration. Die bestehende Literatur hat dieses Thema hauptsächlich von einer nationalen und sozioökonomischen Perspektive betrachtet.     Abstract: Movement of people has been a key feature in the whole history of European integration. While existing literature has mostly adopted national viewpoints and a socioeconomic perspective, this book integrates these existing fragmented analyses, views them from a broader perspective and places them in the wider context of the social and demographic transformation of Europe and the political and economic narrative of continental integration. It highlights the impact made by EC/EU immigration policies on the external political and economic relations of Europe and acknowledges that pre-1989 migration from East European countries is part of European integration. By showing that migration policies and their impact on European national societies and economies cannot be fully understood without taking into account the EC framework, this book, therefore, contributes to migration studies as a whole.

    Abstract: "The migration of Ethiopians across international borders is a recent phenomenon because of the limited integration of the country and society to the global economy. Since it was never colonized--aside from the Italian occupation of 1936-1941--Ethiopia's economy and society were not directly impacted by the ebb and flow of the global economy, and thus never generated international migration. Beginning in the 1970s, due to factors such as famine, rural poverty, civil war, and political repression, an unprecedented number of Ethiopian migrants began to leave their country in search of better, more secure lives.     Abstract: "India's partition in 1947 and the creation of Bangladesh in 1971 saw the displacement and resettling of millions of Muslims and Hindus, resulting in profound transformations across the region. A third of the region's population sought shelter across new borders, almost all of them resettling in the Bengal delta itself. A similar number were internally displaced, while others moved to the Middle East, North America and Europe. Using a creative interdisciplinary approach combining historical, sociological and anthropological approaches to migration and diaspora this book explores the experiences of Bengali Muslim migrants through this period of upheaval and transformation. It draws on over 200 interviews conducted in Britain, India, and Bangladesh, tracing migration and settlement within, and from, the Bengal delta region in the period after 1947. Focussing on migration and diaspora 'from below', it teases out fascinating 'hidden' migrant stories, including those of women, refugees, and displaced people. It reveals surprising similarities, and important differences, in the experience of Muslim migrants in widely different contexts and places, whether in the towns and hamlets of Bengal delta, or in the cities of Britain. Dabei liegt das besondere Augenmerk auf Schulklassen und Vereinen als Strukturen, die einheimische und Migrantenkinder zusammenbringen und Freunde werden lassen können. Es wird geprüft, inwiefern Freundschaften zu Schulleistungen von Kindern beitragen und ob die migrationsspezifische und sozioökonomische Situation der Freunde dabei eine Rolle spielt

    Abstract: The survey analyses the mechanisms of decision making that affect the behaviour of foreign students and make them lose confidence when they are obliged to go to the Foreigners’ Registration Office. This survey combines qualitative and quantitative methods of research. In the qualitative analysis some of the counselors in the Foreigners’ Registration Office and in the International Offices of several universities in Cologne were interviewed. In addition, foreign students were asked to complete an online survey for the quantitative research. The results show very clearly that foreign clients associate essentially negative emotions with the Foreigners’ Registration Office and this perception is widely spread among them. Moreover, some counselors in particular districts seem to ignore existing directives and tend to abuse their power to some extent. This leads to anxiety and distrust in future visits to Foreigners’ Registration Office

    Abstract: Über Kopftuch und Burka werden in Deutschland wie in Frankreich seit Jahren heftige Debatten geführt. Auslöser waren hierfür in Deutschland Entscheidungen des Bundesverfassungsgerichts aus den Jahren 2003 und 2015. In Frankreich erregen zwei Gesetze die Gemüter: das Kopftuchverbot für Schülerinnen 2004; ein generelles Verbot, mit einem Gesichtsschleier in der Öffentlichkeit aufzutreten, 2010. Nachdem der Europäische Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte dieses Verbot nicht beanstandet hatte, wurde auch in Deutschland ein Burka-Verbot gefordert. Die Kontroverse um Kopftuch und Burka stellt aber nur ein Symptom dahinter liegender Probleme dar: Wieviel Homogenität ist für ein friedliches Zusammenleben in einer multireligiösen Gesellschaft erforderlich? Auf wieviel Toleranz ist sie angewiesen? Aber auch, wo sind deren Grenzen? Die Antworten werden auch bestimmt durch das Verständnis des Verhältnisses von Staat und Religion, das Ausmaß an Laizität. Deren Konzepte in Frankreich und Deutschland nähern sich gerade angesichts der Verbreitung des Islam in beiden Ländern ungeachtet unterschiedlicher historischer Ausgangspunkte an. Durch den starken Zustrom an Flüchtlingen haben diese Fragen eine ungeahnte Aktualität erfahren

The main inflows have been temporary workers from Southeast Asian countries and female spouses from Southeast Asia and China marrying Taiwanese husbands.
