    Abstract: Computer gelten als prägende Faktoren unserer Gesellschaft, ohne dass die ihnen zugesprochene Gestaltungsmacht systematisch hinterfragt würde. Gemeinhin werden sie als Rechenmaschine, Medium oder Notationssystem adressiert. Unklar bleibt, welcher Status Computern als Ding überhaupt zukommt. Mit ihrer kritischen Neulektüre von Vilém Flusser und Mark Weiser legt Suzana Alpsancar zwei symptomatische Computerkonzepte im Diskurs des Digitalen frei. Sie zeigt, dass eine Reflexion der Gestaltungsmacht von Computern neben typischen Gebrauchsweisen gerade auch auf ihre potenzielle Widerständigkeit als Dinge abheben muss, um ihre Medialität angemessen erfassen zu können.

    Abstract: Was ist ein gutes Leben? Und vor allem: Wo und auf welche Weise lässt es sich gut leben? Diese Fragen untersucht Julia Rössel am Beispiel von Zugezogenen in der Uckermark. Sie beschreibt deren Weg zum guten Leben - vom Wunsch nach Veränderung bis zum dortigen Alltagsleben und dessen Reflexion. Durch eine enge Verzahnung von theoretischer und empirischer Arbeit entwickelt sie ein Konzept zur Produktion von Räumen des guten Lebens und eröffnet interessante Perspektiven für die Entwicklung peripherer Regionen. Darüber hinaus bietet die Studie einen empirischen Zugang zu Lefebvres Produktion von Raum, der auf der Ebene des Individuums ansetzt und gleichzeitig gesellschaftliche Aspekte nicht aus dem Blick verliert.

Heinemann untersucht Perspektiven und Weiterbildungsteilnahmegründe der heterogenen Gruppe von deutschen Frauen mit einem sogenannten Migrationshintergrund. Die differenzierte rassismuskritische Analyse öffnet neue Zugänge und Perspektiven in der Erwachsenenbildungsforschung und präsentiert Hintergrundwissen für die Weiterbildungspraxis.

    Abstract: "This book presents an analysis of adaptive local policy implementation in China in the context of the "Building of a New Socialist Countryside" (BNSC) policy framework. Based on intensive field work in four counties in Fujian, Jiangxi, Shaanxi and Zhejiang Provinces between 2008 and 2011, it offers detailed analyses of the form and impact of county governments' strategic agency at certain stages and within certain fields of the implementation process (for example, the design of local BNSC programs, the steering of project funding, implementation and evaluation, the establishment of model villages and the management of public participation). Further, this study illustrates that BNSC is far more than the 'empty slogan' described by many observers when it was launched in 2005/2006. nstead, it has already brought about considerable shifts in terms of the process and outcomes of rural policy implementation. Altogether, the results of this research challenge existing paradigms by showing how, against the background of contemporary approaches to rural development and recent reforms initiated by the central state, local bureaucracies' strategic agency can actually push forward effective--albeit not necessarily optimal--policy implementation to some extent, which serves the interests of central authorities, local implementors and rural residents"--

    Abstract: "Over the past few years, secularism has become an intrinsic component of discussions on religious freedom and religious governance. The question of whether states should restrict the wearing of headscarves and other religious symbols has been particularly critical in guiding this thought process. Refashioning Secularisms in France and Turkey documents how, in both countries, devout women have contested bans on headscarves, pointing to how these are inconsistent with the 'real' spirit of secularism. These activists argue that it is possible to be simultaneously secular and religious; to believe in the values conveyed by secularism, while still remaining devoted to their faith. Through this examination, the book highlights how activists locate their claims within the frame of secularism, while at the same time revisiting it to craft a space for their religiosity. Addressing the lacuna in literature on the discourse of devout Muslims affected by these restrictions, this book offers a topical analysis on an understudied dimension of secularism and is a valuable resource for students and researchers with an interest in Religion, Gender Studies, Human Rights and Political Science. Das weltweit diskutierte Manifest renommierter Autoren stellt klar: Dies kann nur in einer sozialen Ordnung gelingen, die sich auf eine gemeinsame Menschheit, auf Prinzipien einer gemeinsamen Vergesellschaftung, auf das Prinzip der Individualität und auf die Akzeptanz kreativer Opposition beruft.

    Abstract: "Japan was the first Asian country to become a mature industrial society, and throughout the 1970s and the 1980s, was viewed as an "all-middle-class society". However since the 1990s there have been growing doubts as to the real degree of social equality in Japan, particularly in the context of dramatic demographic shifts as the population ages whilst fertility levels continue to fall. This book compares Japan with America, Britain, Italy, France, Germany, Sweden and Taiwan in order to determine whether inequality really is a social problem in Japan. With a focus on impact demographic shifts, Sawako Shirahase examines female labour market participation, income inequality among households with children, the state of the family, generational change, single person households and income distribution among the aged, and asks whether increasing inequality and is uniquely Japanese, or if it is a social problem common across all of the societies included in this study. Crucially, this book shows that Japan is distinctive not in terms of the degree of inequality in the society, but rather, in how acutely inequality is perceived. Further, the data shows that Japan differs from the other countries examined in terms of the gender gap in both the labour market and the family, and in inequality among single-person households - single men and women, including lifelong bachelors and spinsters - and also among single parent households, who pay a heavy price for having deviated from the expected pattern of life in Japan. Drawing on extensive empirical data, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars interested in Japanese culture and society, Japanese studies and social policy more generally"--

    Abstract: "This book develops a notion of differences and "otherness" beyond hegemonic and hierarchical thinking as represented by the legacies of Western philosophical and political thinking. In doing so, it relates to the 20th Century phenomenological discourse, especially to Georg Simmel, Alfred Schütz, Emmanual Lévinas, and Jacques Derrida, and drafts our understanding of difference as a genuine human experience of a social and political world that is in motion and transformative, rather than static and predictable. On this basis of temporalized ontology and its normative consequences, differences are drafted as a positive social and political force and as powerful capacities of transformation and change. In practical terms, this understanding is most important for our theorizing and acting upon peace, peace-building, and conflict solution. Differences appear now not as obstacle to peace and reconciliation, but as lively and constructive articulation of "otherness" and as a positive power of transformation, emancipation, and change.This book will be of interest to students of international relations, philosophy, and political theory.     Abstract: "This book attempts to approach peace from its theoretical fundations, developing a framework that, first, will address critiques of concepts of peace, which nullify this fundamental relation and are therefore called 'imperial peace' here (also 'liberal peace' elsewhere); and second, for (re)thinking of peace as a tension between 'self' and "other" anchored in a politics of the promotion and cultivation of differences.     Abstract: Von den Anschlägen des 11. September 2001 bis zur Sarrazin-Debatte: Dass deutsche Musliminnen und Muslime derzeit mit einem negativen Image konfrontiert werden, ist evident. Wie jedoch wirken sich diese negativen Stereotype auf das Alltagsleben und die Identitätskonstruktionen der Betroffenen aus? Am Beispiel deutsch-marokkanischer Interviewpartner_innen weist Maike Didero nach, dass divergierende Reaktionen auf das deutsche Islambild durch unterschiedliche translokale Positionierungen erklärt werden können. Ihre Studie präsentiert auf Grundlage der Subjekttheorien von Laclau/Mouffe, Butler und Bourdieu ein innovatives Konzept zur Analyse von narrativen Identitäten als performative Praxis.
    Abstract: From 9/11 to the Sarrazin debate: that German Muslims are now confronted with a negative image is evident. Maike Didero asks how these negative stereotypes affect the everyday life and identity construction of those involved. Using the example of German-Moroccan interviewees, she shows that divergent reactions are due to different trans-local positioning. Based on the theories of the subject of Laclau/Mouffe, Butler, and Bourdieu, an innovative approach to the analysis of narrative identities is presented here as a performative practice.

Focusing on the instrumentalization of violence, the ensuing and manufactured culture of fear, gendered experiences of state violence, pain, incarceration, and corporeal punishment, Ramazan Aras argues that these phenomena have shaped contemporary Kurdish history and memory. Analysing occurrences of various forms of protracted state violence and fear not only as personal and differential markers experienced by individuals, but also as communally-felt phenomena which have engendered collective suffering, this book asserts that these traumatic experiences have marked the social body and produced a prevailing narrative of Kurdishness.Providing an anthropological study of political violence, fear, and pain amongst the Kurdish community in Turkey, this book will be welcomed by students and scholars of Kurdish Studies, Middle East Studies and Anthropology"--

Arguing that the Druze community has been politically alienated from the Lebanese state, this book explores the historical and political origins of this alienation. The Druze Community and the Lebanese State contends that the origins of this alienation lie in the state's national ideology, its political confessional system, and the Druze's historical background during the medieval period.
