    Abstract: Das Aufeinandertreffen grundlegend unterschiedlicher Relevanzstrukturen ist ein Phänomen, von dem verstärkt AkteurInnengruppen betroffen sind, deren Selbst-Weltverhältnis nicht primär in der Moderne gründet. Diese Studie untersucht indigene Lebensentwürfe in Mexiko, die sich im Spannungsfeld von Modernisierung und von westlichen Vorstellungen divergierenden Orientierungsfolien bewegen. Unter den Bedingungen konkurrierender Wissensprofile werden die von den AkteurInnen entwickelten Handlungskonzepte subjektorientiert, anhand narrativ-biographischer Interviews, erschlossen und exemplarisch herausgearbeitet. Im Besonderen richtet sich der Blick auf Lern- und Bildungsprozesse, welche in der Begegnung divergenter Relevanzstrukturen entwickelt werden. Von Interesse sind dabei biographische Formate, welche die soziale Einbindung als primären Baustein biographischer Konstruktionsprozesse erkennen lassen und ein Potenzial sichtbar machen, das auf kreative Aktivitäten sbquo;abseits’ moderner Lebenskonstruktionen verweist.

    Abstract: This, the sixth volume in Springer's Globalisation, Comparative Education and Policy Research series, presents scholarly research on major discourses of race, ethnicity and gender in education. It is a sourcebook of ideas for researchers, practitioners and policy makers in education, globalisation, social justice, equity and access in schooling around the world. The aim of the book is to provide an easily accessible, practical yet scholarly source of information about issues of international concern in the field of globalisation and comparative education. Readers will also find here the very latest thinking on race, ethnicity and gender in the context of global culture. Editors Zajda and Freeman have compiled perspectives on education and policy research that are relevant to progressive pedagogy, social change and transformational educational reforms in the 21st century. The book critically examines the interplay between state, ideology and current discourses of race, ethnicity and gender in the global culture. It draws on recent research in the areas of globalisation, equity, social justice, and the role of the State. The authors also explore conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches that could be applied to research covering the State, globalisation, race, ethnicity and gender, and analyze existing inequalities due to race, ethnicity and gender and resultant social stratification. Finally, the book demonstrates the neo-liberal ideological imperatives of education and policy reform, affecting race, ethnicity and gender, and illustrates the way the relationship between the State and education policy affects current trends in education policy as well as reforms in the fields of race, ethnicity and gender.

    Abstract: Higher education finances lie at the crossroads in many Western countries. On the one hand, the surging demand of the past three or four decades, driven by a belief in higher education as a principal engine of social and economic advancement, has led to dramatic growth of the higher education systems in these countries. On the other hand, this growth in demand was accompanied by rapidly increasing per-student cost pressures at a time when governments seemed increasingly unable to keep pace with these cost pressures through public revenues. Hence, worldwide, the most common approach to the need for increasing revenue was to use some form or forms of cost sharing, or the shift of some of the higher educational per-student costs from governments and taxpayers to parents and students. This raises several important challenges to higher education systems. First, there is the political and social controversy associated with most forms of cost-sharing, particularly with tuition fees. Secondly, there are important issues in terms of the broad context of social policy, such as the role of families and students and the relationship that the state establishes with each of them. Third, there is the comparison of alternative instruments of cost-sharing and the direct and indirect effects of each of them, notably in terms of educational equality. Overall, underlying cost-sharing debates are fundamental questions about social choice, individual opportunities, and the role of government in society

    Abstract: Brain Research in Language addresses important neurological issues involved in reading. The reading process is a highly composite cognitive task, which relies on brain systems that were originally devoted to other functions. The majority of studies in this area have implemented behavioral methodologies, which provide information concerning the entire cognitive sequence at the conclusion of processing only, in the reader’s output. However, these measures cannot specify all of the covert component operations that contribute to reading, nor can they determine the relative processing times required by the individual stages. Furthermore, they cannot determine which processes occur serially, which occur in parallel and which overlap in time (Brandeis & Lehmann, 1994; Johnson, 1995). Recent advancements in the field of neuroscience and cognitive development, however, have added a new dimension with regard to the research into the universal and domain specific aspects of reading with the advent of innovative neurophysiological measurement techniques. The most common are electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). These two methods provide researchers with the opportunity to examine, in-depth, the neural correlates of the reading processing with precise temporal and spatial resolutions, respectively. This book presents data obtained from various studies employing behavioral, electrophysiological and imaging methodologies in different languages focusing on the regular reading process and the dyslexic population.     Abstract: Three themes underpin the tripartite structure of "Power, Voice, and the Public Good", including attention to the definitional and theoretical underpinnings of globalization; the ubiquitous nature and topical display of globalization; and, the possibilities of understanding, redefining and rethinking aspects of globalization with the backdrop of issues that relate to education, and the pursuit of public good. A plethora of examples how education and schooling respond to and are driven by larger global networks, demands, and discourses are explored. Each chapter of the book consistently addresses ways of looking at the hope and promise of education and schooling in spite of the advent, realities, and complexities of their globalized societies

Auch solche, die über die fachliche Ebene hinausgehen, nehmen auf das Unterrichts-und Lerngeschehen Einfluss. Am Beispiel einer Interventionsstudie zur Gentechnik prüft die Autorin, wie die explizite Reflexion und Berücksichtigung impliziter Vorstellungen bzw. Alltagsphantasien für die fachdidaktische Diskussion fruchtbar gemacht werden kann.

Anhand von qualitativen Interviews stellt die Autorin die Bedingungen für gelingende Lebensentwürfe von Migrantinnen der dritten Generation dar. Entgegen des vorherrschenden Diskurses, der Migrantinnen als Opfer ihrer Herkunftskultur beschreibt, werden in den Biografien verschiedene Risiko- und Schutzfaktoren erkennbar. Die jungen Frauen setzen sich intensiv mit dem in unserer Gesellschaft präsenten Stereotyp der „typisch türkischen Frau“ auseinander und fordern ein differenziertes Bild ihrer individuellen Lebenssituation ein. Im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit stehen Orientierungs- und Handlungsmuster im Kontext von sozialer Ein- und Ausgrenzung, wobei dem sozialen Umfeld und den individuellen Handlungsstrategien im Hinblick auf Fremd- und Selbstzuschreibungen besondere Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet wird. Das Buch macht deutlich, dass weder die Opferrolle noch der allgemein attestierte Kulturkonflikt für die Situation der jungen Frauen entscheidend ist

    Abstract: In contesto scolastico quello delle difficoltà in matematica è un fenomeno importante sia per la sua diffusione sia per le conseguenze che ha a vari livelli: dal disagio personale con cui viene vissuto da molti allievi, all'atteggiamento negativo che larghi strati della popolazione costruiscono verso la nostra disciplina, fino al calo di iscrizioni ai corsi di laurea scientifici. Di fronte a queste difficoltà, che spesso si manifestano in comportamenti quali la rinuncia a provare o il rispondere a caso, l'azione didattica finalizzata al recupero è in genere un'azione locale, che nasce dall'individuazione di errori per poi intervenire sulle conoscenze ritenute necessarie per rispondere correttamente. Ma questo tipo di intervento si rivela in genere fallimentare, e l'insegnante - insieme all'allievo - matura un senso di impotenza e di frustrazione. Il fatto è che questo approccio tende ad ignorare la varietà degli scopi che allievi diversi si possono porre davanti ad uno stesso compito, scopi non necessariamente interni alla matematica: per un intervento efficace è necessario allora spostare l'attenzione dagli errori che l'allievo commette all'allievo che li commette, alla ricerca dei motivi delle sue azioni. Questo volume intende offrire agli insegnanti di matematica strumenti utili per affrontare il problema, costruendo gradatamente - anche con l'aiuto di contributi teorici provenienti da altre discipline - un repertorio di interpretazioni possibili per i comportamenti degli allievi, su cui poter progettare interventi mirati, adeguati cioè ai loro problemi e bisogni

World production, product prices, wages, interest rates, exchange rates, employment, and spending are shown to be mutually determined over time with the growth rates of country-specific renewable resources, the generation of waste, human population growth, waste assimilation by the basic fungible resource, and the sanitation and other health and human services provided by the government sectors. Particular attention is paid to alternative central bank policies and their potential effects upon future mixes of resources in world production and upon the level and composition of that production. Materials balance holds with respect to all production and consumption. Cash flow constraints hold with respect to all economic transactions; in particular, the decisions to save and invest are directly linked to financial market decisions

    Abstract: Die gemeinsame Mahlzeit zählt zu den wichtigsten Alltagsritualen in Familien. Im Rahmen einer pädagogischen Ethnographie wird in diesem Buch zum einen verdeutlicht, wodurch sich die soziale Situation bei Tisch von Gewohnheiten oder Routinen abhebt und mit der Kategorie »Ritual« sinnvoll untersucht werden kann. Zum anderen zeigt die umfangreiche empirische Analyse, wie sich bei Tisch die Konstitution der Familie im Hinblick auf die Anerkennung von Autorität vollzieht. In Anlehnung an Pierre Bourdieus Konzept der sozialen Magie wird der Zusammenhang von symbolischer Praxis, pädagogischen Interaktionen und Autoritätsstrukturen rekonstruiert. Das Tischritual erweist sich als ein Mittel der familialen Differenzbearbeitung, dessen pädagogisches Potential bislang unterschätzt wurde.Die Studie leistet einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Analyse von Familienritualen und ist wegweisend für die Erforschung pädagogischer Interaktionsformen
