Abstract: Achille Mbembe invokes the architectural aesthetic of brutalism to describe our moment, caught up in the pathos of demolition and production on a planetary scale, arguing that the solution is to develop a new planetary consciousness and a community of humans in solidarity with all living things.

Abstract: In Infertile Environments, Janelle Lamoreaux investigates how epigenetic research into the effects of toxic exposure conceptualizes and configures environments. Drawing on fieldwork in a Nanjing, China, toxicology lab that studies the influence of pesticides and other pollutants on male reproductive and developmental health, Lamoreaux shows how the lab's everyday research practices bring national, hormonal, dietary, maternal, and laboratory environments into being. She situates the lab's work within broader Chinese history as well as the contemporary cultural and political moment, in which declining fertility rates and reproductive governance and technology are growing concerns. She also points to how toxicology in China is a transnational endeavor tied to both local conditions and international research agendas and infrastructures, which highlights the myriad scales and scope of epigenetic environments. At a moment of growing concerns about toxins, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and climate change, Lamoreaux demonstrates that epigenetic research's proliferation of environments produces new kinds of toxic relations that impact multiple generations of humans.

Abstract: "Turning Archival traces the rise of "the archive" as an object of historical desire and study within queer studies. Highlighting the growing significance of the archival to LGBTQ scholarship, politics, and everyday life, the contributors draw upon multidisciplinary, geopolitically diverse, and embodied accounts of queer archival encounters in institutional, grassroots, and everyday repositories of historical memory. By analyzing how the many turns to the archives shape the relationship of the historical to queer forms of knowledge, evidence, and worldmaking, this book theorizes the notion of turning in performative terms as a way of understanding how meaning gets produced through encounters with archival materials. Drawing on a range of perspectives-from postcolonial, performance, trans, disability, and cultural studies-this collection examines the archival turn within queer studies and how it has fostered historical imagination and knowledge. Together, the contributors provide personal and critical reflections on the allure of the archives, on that which resists archival capture, and on what is at stake for queer and trans lives in these archival turns"--
Abstract: The contributors to Turning Archival trace the rise of "the archive" as an object of historical desire and study within queer studies and examine how it fosters historical imagination and knowledge. Highlighting the growing significance of the archival to LGBTQ scholarship, politics, and everyday life, they draw upon accounts of queer archival encounters in institutional, grassroots, and everyday repositories of historical memory. The contributors examine such topics as the everyday life of marginalized queer immigrants in New York City as an archive; secondhand vinyl record collecting and punk bootlegs; the self-archiving practices of grassroots lesbians; and the decolonial potential of absences and gaps in the colonial archives through the life of a suspected hermaphrodite in colonial Guatemala. Engaging with archives from Africa to the Americas to the Arctic, this volume illuminates the allure of the archive, reflects on that which resists archival capture, and outlines the stakes of queer and trans lives in the archival turn. Abstract: "Wake Up, This Is Joburg is a collaboration between photographer Mark Lewis and writer Tanya Zack. Originally published from 2014-2019 as ten separate photobooks by Fourthwall Books in South Africa, the collection builds a portrait of Johannesburg through individual stories and accompanying photographs. Ranging from butchers removing meat from cow heads in a parking garage meat market to underground gold miners hauling rock by hand from abandoned shafts under the city, these stories contribute to ethnographic studies of the city by showing the lived experience of its residents. At its heart, this project investigates how people are improvising to repurpose land and buildings, especially in Johannesburg's inner city. It brings attention to a vast informal economy, as well as widespread reconstruction as crumbling buildings are occupied, burned, stripped of parts, and rebuilt to serve the needs of the residents."

Abstract: "In TV Snapshots, Lynn Spigel explores snapshots of people posing in front of their television sets in the 1950s through the early 1970s. Like today's selfies, TV snapshots were a popular photographic practice through which people visualized their lives in an increasingly mediated culture. Drawing on her collection of over 5,000 TV snapshots, Spigel shows that people did not just watch TV: women used the TV set as a backdrop for fashion and glamour poses; people dressed in drag in front of the screen; and, in pinup poses, people even turned the TV setting into a space for erotic display. While the TV industry promoted on-screen images of white nuclear families in suburban homes, the snapshots depict a broad range of people across racial, ethnic, and class backgrounds that do not always conform to the reigning middle-class nuclear family ideal. Showing how the television set became a central presence in the home that exceeded its mass entertainment function, Spigel highlights how TV snapshots complicate understandings of the significance of TV in everyday life"--

Abstract: In Climatic Media, Yuriko Furuhata traces climate engineering from the early twentieth century to the present, emphasizing the legacies of Japan's empire building and its Cold War alliance with the United States. Furuhata boldly expands the scope of media studies to consider technologies that chemically "condition" Earth's atmosphere and socially "condition" the conduct of people, focusing on the attempts to monitor and modify indoor and outdoor atmospheres by Japanese scientists, technicians, architects, and artists in conjunction with their American counterparts. She charts the geopolitical contexts of what she calls climatic media by examining a range of technologies such as cloud seeding and artificial snowflakes, digital computing used for weather forecasting and weather control, cybernetics for urban planning and policing, Nakaya Fujiko's fog sculpture, and the architectural experiments of Tange Lab and the Metabolists, who sought to design climate-controlled capsule housing and domed cities. Furuhata's transpacific analysis offers a novel take on the elemental conditions of media and climate change.

Abstract: "Our daily dealings with media are characterized by a remarkable turn to the tactile. In practically all places, at practically all times, we touch and handle media devices. Conversely, these devices touch and scan us-and increasingly so: from pressure sensors in car seats and motion detectors in front of automatic doors to body scanners, smart phones, and fitness trackers. To this development, Horn, or The Counterside of Media responds by considering a substance and surface that is an exemplary "medium." Horn stands for a natural substance but also an artificial object. It constitutes a boundary between interior and exterior, while functioning as decoration and ornament, shield and tool. From Rebekka Horn, Salvador Dali̹, and William Kentridge to Sigmund Freud, Walter Benjamin and Marshall McLuhan, this book enters into a creative dialogue with artists, scientists, and media philosophers that have dealt with animal horns, memory cones, musical instruments, and rhinoceroses. Presenting their respective contributions in a lavishly illustrated "fictitious exhibition," it unfolds a critical panorama of our tactile culture in which the counterside of media is clearly recognized and respected"-

Abstract: In The Politics of Decolonial Investigations Walter D. Mignolo provides a sweeping examination of how coloniality has operated around the world in its myriad forms from the sixteenth century to the twenty-first. Decolonial border thinking allows Mignolo to outline how the combination of the self-fashioned narratives of Western civilization and the hegemony of Eurocentric thought served to eradicate all knowledges in non-European languages and praxes of living and being. Mignolo also traces the geopolitical origins of racialized and gendered classifications, modernity, globalization, and cosmopolitanism, placing them all within the framework of coloniality. Drawing on the work of theorists and decolonial practitioners from the Global South and the Global East, Mignolo shows how coloniality has provoked the emergence of decolonial politics initiated by delinking from all forms of Western knowledge and subjectivities. The urgent task, Mignolo stresses, is the epistemic reconstitution of categories of thought and praxes of living destituted in the very process of building Western civilization and the idea of modernity. The overcoming of the long-lasting hegemony of the West and its distorted legacies is already underway in all areas of human existence. Mignolo underscores the relevance of the politics of decolonial investigations, in and outside the academy, to liberate ourselves from canonized knowledge, ways of knowing, and praxes of living

Abstract: "Counterlife demonstrates that scholarship on slavery in the Americas has its imaginative roots in the emergence of sociology/social theory in the 1950s as well as aesthetic movements (e.g., naturalism and modernism) that flourished in the early twentieth century. Debates between social scientists, artists, and politicians about mass culture, modern urban space, and socialization amplify slavery studies' preoccupation with political insurgency and resistance. This book analyzes the kinds of descriptions of social space, power, and personality type that became pivotal in the early sociology and psychology of slavery studies"--

Abstract: "The dystopian transformation of contemporary societies that has expanded to various parts of the world and to diverse domains of human activities requires a rethinking of our conceptual repertoire rather than the reinvention of neologisms. The terms that we consider as belonging to a political lexicon need to be understood in relation to a constellation of concepts and a diversity of experiences across different societies in both comparative and relational terms. Chapters in Words and Worlds are organized around individual terms that form part of a political lexicon that many use to understand what is unfolding before their eyes. The juxtaposition of these different terms and the cross references that show unexpected connections across diverse domains of social life, whether concentrated in small spaces or dispersed across vastly distant ones, challenge the reader to see these dystopian developments through a different modality of reading and sensing. Words like knowledge, authority, democracy, corruption, inequality, and crisis have become part of our everyday vocabulary; yet, what animates these words, what give them life, what makes them dead, urges us to examine these common vocabularies from new and different angles rather than using them as crutches to avoid facing current disturbing realities"--

The author weaves together ethnographic storytelling with philosophical experimentation to dramatize a politics of the pluriverse under the question "what is reality capable of?" Abstract: "MEDIA PRIMITIVISM is a major work of media theory centering Africa. In order to redefine ideas of the medium and mediation, Delinda Collier deconstructs terms that have been formative in the conceptualization of African art (in particular, the fetish), rethinking them in light of another abstraction that shaped the media, art, and anthropological theory circulated in the twentieth century: Africa itself. Collier responds to the long preoccupation with Africa as the home of art that is "natural," non-technological, non-philosophical, exploring mediated African artworks that do not fit into these narratives. She argues that ideas about "African media" must be understood in relation to other modes of transfer and transmutation that have significant colonial and postcolonial histories, such as extractive mining and electricity. This new history demonstrates how pivotal artworks transcend the distinctions between the "made" and the "natural," thereby expanding ideas about mediation and about what African art can do. Each chapter considers the substances and concepts of a different technology-light, electricity, metals-to connect old and new media. Chapter 1, for example, provides an elemental reading of the canonical film work of Souleymane Cissé, arguing that his classic film Yeelen (1987) centers light and wind themselves as mediums. Chapter 2's discussion of one of the first pieces of electronic music, Halim El-Dabh's "Ta'abir Al-Zaar" (1944), shows how the role of electricity in African art cannot be understood only in relation to other new media forms that utilize electrified media. Punning on the multiple meanings of "medium" (zaar is a type of all-female spirit possession ceremony), El-Dabh's work brings together the technical and the spiritual. Chapter 4 turns to work by white South African artists to consider the relationship between (settler) colonial extraction and abstraction and the impossibility of standing outside of systems of oppression. Ultimately, Collier's book connects longstanding questions of art to the earliest moments of contact and cosmopolitan Africa"--

Abstract: "REATTACHMENT THEORY eschews dominant queer critiques of same-sex marriage to examine the varied histories of queer influences on marriage. According to the traditional queer critique, the legalization of same-sex marriage signaled a neoliberal and homonormative assimilation into normative structures of heterosexism and reproductive futurism. Countering this argument, queer film scholar Lee Wallace claims that, since the eighteenth century, marriage has allowed for many queer and non-normative plotlines. In this book, Wallace is more interested in marriage as a narrative-both in how marriage is narrativized, as well as the story of the changing meaning of marriage-than she is in marriage as a legal institution. Drawing on historians of marriage, Wallace traces the iterations of love associated with marriage vows: from obligation or duty, to romance, and finally to intimacy. Historicizing the discourse of intimacy, Wallace claims that the valorization of intimacy across the twentieth century led to an idealization of the couple form, regardless of heterosexual or homosexual affiliation. Furthermore, Wallace draws on twentieth-century formulations of sexual reciprocity and sexual satisfaction regardless of marital status-and their links to the discourses of intimacy-to reveal how these concepts proved flexible enough to include homosexuality. Tracking these changing narratives of marriage throughout the twentieth century, Wallace grounds her analyses in an archive of popular culture films. Using Stanley Cavell's notion that, following the "marriage crisis" created by divorce in the early twentieth century, all marriage is remarriage, Wallace argues that after the advent of same-sex marriage, all marriage is gay marriage. Chapter 1, which doubles as the introduction, lays out the stakes of the project. Chapter 2 examines nineteenth-century literature and early twentieth-century popular culture to reveal the changing story of marriage. Chapter 3 situates the 1936 film Craig's Wife as an anticipation of gay and lesbian alternatives to marriage. Chapter 4 reads Tom Ford's film production of Christopher Isherwood's A Single Man as a means to extend homosexual style as a "brand" of cultural and emotional capital. Chapters 6 and 7 engage directly with Cavell's theory of remarriage as an analytic to examine same-sex marriage. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of queer theory, feminist studies, and film studies"--

Abstract: "In this work, Laura Doyle weaves together feminist-intersectional, decolonial, and dialectical thought to challenge narratives of world history at new depths while also reviving our sense of historical dynamism. Her analysis of the intertwining of literature with geopolitical economy makes visible an underlying struggle over the very terms of relationality. Meticulously informed by new historiography on empires and by critical theory, Doyle's study highlights the geopolitical fact of multiple vying empires in any one period and focuses on the uncertain, unequal, existential conditions created by this field of power over millennia"--

Abstract: In Inter-imperiality Laura Doyle theorizes the co-emergence of empires, institutions, language regimes, stratified economies, and literary cultures over the longue durée. Weaving together feminist, decolonial, and dialectical theory, she shows how inter-imperial competition has generated a systemic stratification of gendered, racialized labor, while literary and other arts have helped both to constitute and to challenge this world order. To study literature is therefore, Doyle argues, to attend to world-historical processes of imaginative and material co-formation as they have unfolded through successive eras of vying empires. It is also to understand oral, performed, and written literatures as power-transforming resources for the present and future. To make this case, Doyle analyzes imperial-economic processes across centuries and continents in tandem with inter-imperially entangled literatures, from A Thousand and One Nights to recent Caribbean fiction. Her trenchant interdisciplinary method reveals the structural centrality of imaginative literature in the politics and possibilities of earthly life

Abstract: "In PHOTOGRAPHIC RETURNS Shawn Smith sets out to examine works of contemporary art, only to find that many of the works refer back to the past, to photography's many intersections with the history of racial justice in the U.S. Smith focuses on flashpoints in that history -- spanning from the abolitionist movement, to the Civil War, lynching, and mass incarceration-- to mark the roles that photography has played in documenting the exigencies of Black life, and as a tool for resisting those racial regimes. For each of these moments, Smith shows how contemporary photographers utilize their medium as a way to recall, revise, or amplify the relationship between racial politics in the past and in the present. She argues that the tendency of African-American photographers and other artists to return to the archive of early photography does not simply point to the usefulness of early photography as document of the past, but to the recursive nature of photography itself. This study expands our theories of photography and memory by arguing that the recursive temporality of photography is central to its role in recording and remembering history. It also asserts that photography is an invaluable tool for critical practice of racial justice"--

Abstract: "OTHERWISE WORLDS is an anthology motivated by the possibilities of other ways of being, feeling, thinking, and relating that exist outside of a settler-colonial, anti-Black ontology. In exploring the practices needed to access these possibilities, the editors and contributors call for new modes of understanding the intersections and tensions that hold Black and Indigenous communities in relation. Pushing past previous articulations of equivalence or incommensurability, solidarity or antagonism, the essays, interviews, and works of art that comprise the volume cohere around a singular, but multivocal, method: engaging with relation as a process, rather than a predetermined reality, in order to draw out the moments and spaces in which the "otherwise" might be reached. Navigating not only the formative debates that have brought Black studies and Indigenous studies scholars to the current impasse, but also the promises of otherwise futures, the editors and contributors read across difference and resist disciplining and disciplinary norms. The collection is divided into four interrelated thematic parts, each a series of provocations and engagements that highlight imaginative strategies and new forms of praxis. The first section considers otherwise potentialities through the corporeal form and the concerns of violence and pain that are themselves intrinsically bound to the body. Essays by Ashon Crawley and Denise Ferreira da Silva draw upon Hortense Spillers's invocation of flesh in order to confront understandings of corporeality focused on the sovereign body. The second section turns to Native studies scholars' use of land and conquest as analytics that productively unsettle the terrain of Black studies' inquiry (and draws a distinction between settler colonial studies and Native studies), with essays by Tiffany King and Chad Infante connecting the afterlives of slavery and conquest. The third section considers the possibilities of Black and Indigenous being-together as a site of both surveillance and resistance; essays by Maile Arvin and Cedric Sunray consider the erasure of Black and Indigenous socialities in the context of anti-Black racism among Native communities. The fourth and final section centers the crucial role of kinship in building future imaginaries through community and a more capacious understanding of relation. This section in particular draws upon artwork, notably that of Kimberly Robertson and Se'mana Thompson. This book will be of interest ...

Abstract: "In THEFT IS PROPERTY! Robert Nichols develops the concept of "recursive dispossession" to describe the critical bind that indigenous activists face when seeking justice for the appropriation of their land: they simultaneously claim that their land was stolen by Anglo settlers, but also that territoriality and property ownership are themselves settler concepts. Putting indigenous thought into conversation with Marxist theory, Nichols argues that property relations under settler colonialism are built upon a structural form of negation, wherein some groups must be alienated from the very property that is being created. Thus, theft precedes and generates property, rather than vice versa, and indigenous claims of retroactive "original ownership" are not contradictory or logically flawed, but rather, gesture back to this very dynamic. By looking at dispossession as a unique historical process in the context of colonialism, Nichols shows how contemporary indigenous struggles have always already produced their own mode of critique and articulation of radical politics"--...

Abstract: In the early 2000s, mainstream international news outlets celebrated the growth of Weblogistan-the online and real-life transnational network of Iranian bloggers-and depicted it as a liberatory site that gave voice to Iranians. As Sima Shakhsari argues in Politics of Rightful Killing, the common assumptions of Weblogistan as a site of civil society consensus and resistance to state oppression belie its deep internal conflicts. While Weblogistan was an effective venue for some Iranians to "practice democracy," it served as a valuable site for the United States to surveil bloggers and express anti-Iranian sentiment and policies. At the same time, bloggers used the network to self-police and enforce gender and sexuality norms based on Western liberal values in ways that unwittingly undermined Weblogistan's claims of democratic participation. In this way, Weblogistan became a site of cybergovernmentality, where biopolitical security regimes disciplined and regulated populations. Analyzing online and off-line ethnography, Shakhsari provides an account of digital citizenship that raises questions about the internet's relationship to political engagement, militarism, and democracy

Abstract: For decades, lesbian feminists across the United States and Canada have created information to build movements and survive in a world that doesn't want them. InInformation Activism Cait McKinney traces how these women developed communication networks, databases, and digital archives that formed the foundation for their work. Often learning on-the-fly and using everything from index cards to computers, these activists brought people and their visions of justice together to organize, store, and provide access to information. Focusing on the transition from paper to digital-based archival techniques from the 1970s to the present, McKinney shows how media technologies animate the collective and unspectacular labor that sustains social movements, including their antiracist and trans-inclusive endeavors. By bringing sexuality studies to bear on media history, McKinney demonstrates how groups with precarious access to control over information create their own innovative and resourceful techniques for generating and sharing knowledge

Abstract: "JOURNEYS THROUGH THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE will contain about four hundred photographs, accompanied by historical contextualization. The project compares William Brumfield's photographs of churches and locations in Russia with the same structures and places photographed by Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky, an early-20th-century Russian inventor of a color photography process, as much as a century earlier. Through this comparison, Brumfield assesses the state of preservation of Russia's architectural heritage and examines the appeal and pitfalls of seeing Prokudin-Gorsky's striking images as a recovery of Russia's lost past. Brumfield examines fervent Russian engagement with the Prokudin-Gorsky collection, which was recently made broadly available through digitization. The author questions the nostalgic assumptions of many analysts, who see the images as a portrayal of an idyllic Russia intact before the Soviet era and neglect the imperial violence present before the revolution. Prokudin-Gorsky himself was idealistic about the imperial potential. He intended his new color photography to convey the cultural and ethnic diversity of the vast Russian Empire, using this medium to impart a visual message from the provinces to the urban centers about the richness of Russia's history, culture, and borderlands. He escaped Russia in 1918 with many of the heavy glass negatives he used, and the Library of Congress ultimately bought the collection. Because of his own field experience photographing Russian architectural monuments, Brumfield was approached to catalog, restore, and exhibit Prokudin-Gorsky's photographs. While working on the project, he realized how much the two photographer's journeys across Russia had, unintentionally, intersected. His own photographic project accelerated with the relaxation of travel restrictions within the Soviet Union during the late 1980s; he documents the remnants of Russia's architectural heritage, and its expression of history, art, and spiritual culture, that Prokudin-Gorsky recorded earlier. This project will be of particular interest to scholars and students of Russian history, art, and architecture, as well as general readers interested in photography and historic preservation"--

Abstract: "In Unseeing Empire Bakirathi Mani examines how empire continues to haunt South Asian American visual cultures. Weaving close readings of fine art together with archival research and ethnographic fieldwork at museums and galleries across South Asia and North America, Mani outlines the visual and affective relationships between South Asian diasporic artists, their photographic work, and their viewers. She notes that the desire for South Asian Americans to see visual representations of themselves is rooted in the use of photography as a form of colonial documentation and surveillance. She examines fine art photography by South Asian diasporic artists who employ aesthetic strategies such as duplication and alteration that run counter to viewers' demands for greater visibility. These works fail to deliver on viewers' desires to see themselves, producing instead feelings of alienation, estrangement, and loss. These feelings, Mani contends, allow viewers to question their own visibility as South Asian Americans in US public culture and to reflect on their desires to be represented"--

Abstract: The concept of relation holds a privileged place in how anthropologists think and write about the social and cultural lives they study. In Relations, eminent anthropologist Marilyn Strathern provides a critical account of this key concept and its usage and significance in the English-speaking world. Exploring relation's changing articulations and meanings over the past three centuries, Strathern shows how the historical idiosyncrasy of using an epistemological term for kinspersons ("relatives") was bound up with evolving ideas about knowledge-making and kin-making. She draws on philosophical debates about relation-such as Leibniz's reaction to Locke-and what became its definitive place in anthropological exposition, elucidating the underlying assumptions and conventions of its use. She also calls for scholars in anthropology and beyond to take up the limitations of Western relational thinking, especially against the background of present ecological crises and interest in multispecies relations. In weaving together analyses of kin-making and knowledge-making, Strathern opens up new ways of thinking about the contours of epistemic and relational possibilities while questioning the limits and potential of ethnographic methods

Abstract: "WRITING ANTHROPOLOGY gathers fifty three essays on writing from leading anthropologists on their approach to writing and its current practice in the field. In the past several decades, as anthropologists have grappled with questions of how to ethically portray their subjects, ethnographic writing styles have also changed from a detached, objective voice to one that is more humanistic and self-reflexive. To explore these changes in writing styles and approaches, Carole McGranahan curated a series for the blog Savage Minds: Notes and Queries in Anthropology on the craft of writing and anthropology. This anthology collects expanded versions of these essays, as well as new additions, and raises wide-ranging questions about what it means to write ethnographically. The book is divided into ten sections: Ruminations, Writing Ideas, Telling Stories, On Responsibility, The Urgency of Now, Writing With, Writing Against, Academic Authors, Ethnographic Genres, Becoming and Belonging, and Writing and Knowing. Essays include Ruth Behar on reading as a writer, Adia Benton on how the passage of time can create fuller ethnographic accounts, and Yarimar Bonilla on the temporality of reading and writing in the digital age. Other contributors include Press authors such as Anand Pandian, Lauren Berlant, Kathleen Stewart, Stuart McLean, and Kristen Ghodsee. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of anthropology and creative writing"--

Abstract: "In Punctuations Michael J. Shapiro examines how punctuation--conceived not as a series of marks but as a metaphor for the ways in which artists engage with intelligibility--opens pathways for thinking through the possibilities for oppositional politics. Drawing on Theodor Adorno, Alain Robbe-Grillet, and Roland Barthes, Shapiro demonstrates how punctuation's capacity to create unexpected rhythmic pacing makes it an ideal tool for writers, musicians, filmmakers, and artists to challenge structures of power. In works ranging from film scores and jazz compositions to literature, architecture, and photography, Shapiro shows how the use of punctuation reveals the contestability of dominant narratives in ways that prompt readers, viewers, and listeners to reflect on their acceptance of those narratives. Such uses of punctuation, he theorizes, offer models for disrupting structures of authority, thereby fostering the creation of alternative communities of sense from which to base political mobilization"--

Abstract: Although the Japanese empire rapidly dissolved following the end of World War II, the memories, mourning, and trauma of the nation's imperial exploits continue to haunt Korea, China, and Taiwan. In 'Anti-Japan' Leo T. S. Ching traces the complex dynamics that shape persisting negative attitudes toward Japan throughout East Asia. Drawing on a mix of literature, film, testimonies, and popular culture, Ching shows how anti-Japanism stems from the failed efforts at decolonization and reconciliation, the Cold War and the ongoing U.S. military presence, and shifting geopolitical and economic conditions in the region. At the same time, pro-Japan sentiments in Taiwan reveal a Taiwanese desire to recoup that which was lost after the Japanese empire fell. Anti-Japanism, Ching contends, is less about Japan itself than it is about the real and imagined relationships between it and China, Korea, and Taiwan. Advocating for forms of healing that do not depend on state-based diplomacy, Ching suggests that reconciliation requires that Japan acknowledge and take responsibility for its imperial history

Abstract: In Punctuations Michael J. Shapiro examines how punctuation—conceived not as a series of marks but as a metaphor for the ways in which artists engage with intelligibility—opens pathways for thinking through the possibilities for oppositional politics. Such uses of punctuation, he theorizes, offer models for disrupting structures of authority, thereby fostering the creation of alternative communities of sense from which to base political mobilization.

Abstract: Tenth Anniversary Expanded EditionTen years on, Jasbir K. Puar's pathbreaking Terrorist Assemblages remains one of the most influential queer theory texts and continues to reverberate across multiple political landscapes, activist projects, and scholarly pursuits. Puar argues that configurations of sexuality, race, gender, nation, class, and ethnicity are realigning in relation to contemporary forces of securitization, counterterrorism, and nationalism. She examines how liberal politics incorporate certain queer subjects into the fold of the nation-state, shifting queers from their construction as figures of death to subjects tied to ideas of life and productivity. This tenuous inclusion of some queer subjects depends, however, on the production of populations of Orientalized terrorist bodies. Heteronormative ideologies that the U.S. nation-state has long relied on are now accompanied by what Puar calls homonationalism-a fusing of homosexuality to U.S. pro-war, pro-imperialist agendas. As a concept and tool of biopolitical management, homonationalism is here to stay. Puar's incisive analyses of feminist and queer responses to the Abu Ghraib photographs, the decriminalization of sodomy in the wake of the Patriot Act, and the profiling of Sikh Americans and South Asian diasporic queers are not instances of a particular historical moment; rather, they are reflective of the dynamics saturating power, sexuality, race, and politics today. This Tenth Anniversary Expanded Edition features a new foreword by Tavia Nyong'o and a postscript by Puar entitled "Homonationalism in Trump Times." Nyong'o and Puar recontextualize the book in light of the current political moment while reposing its original questions to illuminate how Puar's interventions are even more vital and necessary than ever
