    Abstract: Biographical note: Inga Klein (M.A.) ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Volkskunde/Kulturanthropologie der Universität Hamburg. Sonja Windmüller (Dr. phil.) forscht und lehrt im Fach Volkskunde/Kulturanthropologie.
    Abstract: »Ökonomie« gilt als ein Kernbereich moderner Gesellschaften, der alle anderen Bereiche maßgeblich durchwirkt. Werden Ökonomie und Kultur zusammengedacht, richtet sich das Interesse gemeinhin auf den Einfluss des ökonomischen Paradigmas auf Gesellschaft und Kultur(wissenschafts-)betrieb. Im Unterschied dazu erfahren jedoch ökonomische Modelle und Theorien in der kulturwissenschaftlichen Forschung noch zu wenig Aufmerksamkeit. Im Gegensatz dazu beschäftigt sich dieser Band mit der Kultur- und Ideengeschichte und der (medialen) Kommunikation des Ökonomischen sowie dessen Material(isierungen). Die Beiträge setzen wichtige Impulse auch für den öffentlich-medialen Umgang mit ökonomischen Themen und tragen damit zu einem Aufbrechen oft unhinterfragter »Gesetzmäßigkeiten« und starrer Bilder in der Verhandlung ökonomischer Fragen bei.

    Abstract: The meaning that people attribute to things necessarily derives from human transactions and motivations, particularly from how those things are used and circulated. The contributors to this volume examine how things are sold and traded in a variety of social and cultural settings, both present and past. Focusing on culturally defined aspects of exchange and socially regulated processes of circulation, the essays illuminate the ways in which people find value in things and things give value to social relations. By looking at things as if they lead social lives, the authors provide a new way to understand how value is externalized and sought after. They discuss a wide range of goods - from oriental carpets to human relics - to reveal both that the underlying logic of everyday economic life is not so far removed from that which explains the circulation of exotica, and that the distinction between contemporary economics and simpler, more distant ones is less obvious than has been thought. As the editor argues in his introduction, beneath the seeming infinitude of human wants, and the apparent multiplicity of material forms, there in fact lie complex, but specific, social and political mechanisms that regulate taste, trade, and desire. Containing contributions from American and British social anthropologists and historians, the volume bridges the disciplines of social history, cultural anthropology, and economics, and marks a major step in our understanding of the cultural basis of economic life and the sociology of culture.     Abstract: This study is about a popular manifestation of Islamic devotion that embraces a pluralist setting, keeping itself in a dynamic dialogue with non-Muslim practices. With evidence from various public devotional narratives and ritual practices, the author argues that even universal understanding of living Islam remains incomplete if we do not consider this locally produced pluralised devotional setting that surrounds it. He seeks to address various aspects of local and localised Islam through an examination of Gugudu's local and popular transformation of normative Islam, giving particular focus to the various devotional rituals that blend Muslim and Hindu practices in the public event of Muharram.

    Abstract: Königen und anderen sakralen Herrschern wurde außergewöhnliches Charisma, Heilskraft und Führungsmacht zugeschrieben - so auch in Afrika. Königtümer gelten bis heute als eine Form politischer Kultur, auch wenn ihre Legitimation in der Moderne ständig in Frage gestellt wird. Seit der strukturellen Krise und dem Rückzug des Staates kehren die Könige von Uganda auf ihre Throne zurück. Einst dem Nationalstaat geopfert, gelten sie nun als Hüter von Traditionen und Kultur - und als »Krisenmanager«. Was aber macht sie heute noch zu Königen? Gelten sie weiterhin als sakral? Wie gestaltet sich die Gesellschaft im modernen Königtum in Afrika und mit welchen Mitteln und Medien regiert der König? Raphaela von Weichs' ethnologische Studie verknüpft auf innovative Weise zentrale Debatten der politischen Anthropologie mit aktuellen Ansätzen der Medien- und Religionsforschung. Sie analysiert die Rückkehr der Könige anhand des ältesten Reiches im Westen Ugandas: Bunyoro-Kitara - und zeigt damit die Dynamik politischer Kultur im modernen Afrika.     Abstract: Kann es eine Islamfeindlichkeit ohne die Religion des Islam geben? Naime Cakir zeigt, dass nicht allein die Terroranschläge des 11. September 2001 für die zunehmenden antiislamischen Vorurteile und Feindbilder in Deutschland verantwortlich sind, sondern auch die Erkenntnis, dass die ehemaligen Gastarbeiter ihren Lebensmittelpunkt auf Dauer in die Bundesrepublik verlegt haben und nun für sich beanspruchen, Objekt von Verantwortung zu sein. Damit waren für die Residenzgesellschaft und für die Einwanderer die etablierten Rollen des Gastgebers und des Gastes irritiert. Die Studie zeichnet nach, wie der Islam zum Gegenstand öffentlicher Anerkennungskonflikte gemacht worden ist, da es einer Neujustierung der Rollen innerhalb des Gesellschaftsgefüges bedurfte, die die Marginalisierung der mittlerweile etablierten Einwanderer weiterhin zu gewährleisten hatte

    Abstract: The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG), a church of Brazilian origin, has been enormously successful in establishing branches and attracting followers in post-apartheid South Africa. Unlike other Pentecostal Charismatic Churches (PCC), the UCKG insists that relationships with God be devoid of 'emotions', that socialisation between members be kept to a minimum and that charity and fellowship are 'useless' in materialising God's blessings. Instead, the UCKG urges members to sacrifice large sums of money to God for delivering wealth, health, social harmony and happiness. While outsiders condemn these rituals as empty or manipulative, this book shows that they are locally meaningful, demand sincerity to work, have limits and are informed by local ideas about human bodies, agency and ontological balance. As an ethnography of people rather than of institutions, this book offers fresh insights into the mass PCC movement that has swept across Africa since the early 1990s.

    Abstract: Yorùbá Elites and Ethnic Politics in Nigeria investigates the dynamics and challenges of ethnicity and elite politics in Nigeria, Africa's largest democracy. Wale Adebanwi demonstrates how the corporate agency of the elite transformed the modern history and politics of one of Africa's largest ethnic groups, the Yorùbá. The argument is organized around the ideas and cultural representations of Ọbáfemi Awólowo, the central signifier of modern Yorùbá culture. Through the narration and analysis of material, non-material and interactional phenomena - such as political party and ethnic group organization, cultural politics, democratic struggle, personal ambitions, group solidarity, death, memory and commemoration - this book examines the foundations of the legitimacy of the Yorùbá political elite. Using historical sociology and ethnographic research, Adebanwi takes readers into the hitherto unexplored undercurrents of one of the most powerful and progressive elite groups in Africa, tracing its internal and external struggles for power

    Abstract: This book discusses the forms and dynamics of political processes in rural India with a special emphasis on West Bengal, the nation's fourth-most populous state. West Bengal's political distinction stems from its long legacy of a Left-led coalition government for more than thirty years and its land reform initiatives. The book closely looks at how people from different castes, religions, and genders represent themselves in local governments, political parties, and in the social movements in West Bengal. At the same time it addresses some important questions: Is there any new pattern of politics emerging at the margins? How does this pattern of politics correspond with the current discourse of governance?     Abstract: This book is about the creation and development of ethnic identity among the Kamba. Comprising approximately one-eighth of Kenya's population, the British considered the Kamba East Africa's premier 'martial race' by the mid-twentieth century: a people with an apparent aptitude for soldiering. The reputation, indeed, was one that Kamba leaders used to leverage financial rewards from the colonial state. However, beneath this simplistic exterior was a maelstrom of argument and debate. Men and women, young and old, Christians and non-Christians, and the elite and poor fought over the virtues they considered worthy of honor in their communities, and which of their visions should constitute 'Kamba' identity. Based on extensive archival research and more than 150 interviews, Ethnicity and Empire is one of the first books to analyze the complex process of building and shaping 'tribe' over more than two centuries. It reveals new ways to think about themes crucial to the history of colonialism: soldiering, 'loyalty', martial race, and indeed the nature of empire itself

    Abstract: How and to what extent do people take into account the intentions of others? Alessandro Duranti sets out to answer this question, showing that the role of intentions in human interaction is variable across cultures and contexts. Through careful analysis of data collected over three decades in US and Pacific societies, Duranti demonstrates that, in some communities, social actors avoid intentional discourse, focusing on the consequences of actions rather than on their alleged original goals. In other cases, he argues, people do speculate about their own intentions or guess the intentions of others, including in some societies where it was previously assumed they avoid doing so. To account for such variation, Duranti proposes an 'intentional continuum', a concept that draws from phenomenology and the detailed analysis of face-to-face interaction. A combination of new essays and classic re-evaluations, the book draws together findings from anthropology, linguistics and philosophy to offer a penetrating account of the role of intentions in defining human action

Tracy Teslow explores how physical anthropologists in the twentieth century struggled to understand the complexity of human physical and cultural variation, and how their theories were disseminated to the public through art, museum exhibitions, books, and pamphlets. In their attempts to explain the history and nature of human peoples, anthropologists persistently saw both race and culture as critical components. This is at odds with a broadly accepted account that suggests racial science was fully rejected by scientists and the public following World War II. This book offers a corrective, showing that both race and culture informed how anthropologists and the public understood human variation from 1900 through the decades following the war.     Abstract: This volume explores the normative foundations of fair(er) relations in the immigration society. The focus is on the concept of solidarity. Beyond a »solidarity among intimates«, immigration society solidarity designates an active practice, which while not necessarily commonality-based, entails both a concrete opponent as well as a political concept of society. This idea is questioned and further developed in the contributions in terms of its theoretical, moral, educational, philosophical, and sociological dimensions.

Bei transcript erschienen: »Die weltoffene Stadt: Wie Migration Globalisierung zum urbanen Alltag macht« (2013). Marc Hill (Dr.) ist Assistenzprofessor im Lehr- und Forschungsbereich Migration und Bildung an der Universität Innsbruck.
    Abstract: Durch Migration entstehen vielfältige Formen der Mobilität, die verschiedene Orte, Lebensweisen und Visionen miteinander verbinden. Menschen, die migrieren, schaffen Räume, die sich sowohl von denen unterscheiden, die sie verlassen haben, als auch von jenen, die neu bezogen wurden. So werden Strukturen, Kulturen und Kommunikationsformen erschaffen, die ohne Impulse durch Migration kaum denkbar wären. Die Lebenspraxis zeigt, dass Menschen mehrere Heimaten und Zugehörigkeiten haben, diverse kulturelle und soziale Netzwerke schaffen können und dass sie mit negativen Zuschreibungen von außen kreativ und subversiv umzugehen wissen. Auf diese Weise entwickeln sich postmigrantische, mehrheimische, hybride und transkulturelle Alltagspraktiken, die bisher kaum gewürdigt worden sind. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes verstehen sich daher als Plädoyer für eine andere Sicht der Dinge und als Absage an das vorauseilende Misstrauen, mit dem migrationsbedingten Phänomenen häufig begegnet wird. Dieser Reader enthält Beiträge u.a. von Wolf-Dietrich Bukow, Sabine Hess, Regina Römhild und Mark Terkessidis.

    Abstract: »Caribbean Food Cultures« approaches the matter of food from the perspectives of anthropology, sociology, cultural and literary studies. Its strong interdisciplinary focus provides new insights into symbolic and material food practices beyond eating, drinking, cooking, or etiquette. The contributors discuss culinary aesthetics and neo/colonial gazes on the Caribbean in literary documents, audiovisual media, and popular images. They investigate the negotiation of communities and identities through the preparation, consumption, and commodification of »authentic« food. Furthermore, the authors emphasize the influence of underlying socioeconomic power relations for the reinvention of Caribbean and Western identities in the wake of migration and transnationalism.
