    Abstract: On the premise that pension provision in Europe will dramatically change over the next few decades, this book concentrates on the funded component of pension wealth, and specifically on annuities - financial products that, on the basis of actuarial equivalence, allow the conversion of wealth into a lifelong stream of income. Developing an Annuity Market in Europe provides an analysis of how longevity and return risks are dealt with, besides considering key features from both household and insurance company perspectives. It takes account of the fact that annuity markets are expected to attract much interest in future years given the prospective cuts in public pension expenditure. In order to fill the gap between shrinking pensions and desired retirement consumption, the authors argue, annuities must be well regulated and supplied with financially attractive products. These conditions hardly exist today: thin markets and scant interest prevail, information is incomplete and imperfect, products show significant disparities. The contributors to this book explore the causes of present malfunctioning and examine the changes that may give annuities a new and vital function, which, along with greater competition and greater regulation may significantly alter the present scene of pension finance. Finally, the book offers an overview of regulatory issues including transparency, prudential provisions, appropriate levels of guarantees, and administrative costs. This important and timely book will be invaluable to anyone interested in annuities, from practitioners through to students, researchers and academics concerned in financial or public economics

    Abstract: L’un des éléments de la révolution pacifique de l’Afrique du Sud au cours de la dernière décennie est la réforme de ses institutions de politique de la concurrence. Le système précédent avait appuyé un régime économique caractérisé par l’autarcie, la protection, le dirigisme et une forte concentration. Le nouveau dispositif comporte deux grands axes : utiliser la politique de la concurrence pour corriger les défauts de l’ancien système et promouvoir les objectifs généraux d’emploi et de partage du pouvoir économique. L’Afrique du Sud aspire à un régime de politique de la concurrence moderne, à la hauteur d’une économie dont une bonne partie est bien dotée en ressources. Les nouvelles instances de la concurrence, répondant dans une large mesure à la nécessité d’opérer à partir de 1994 une restructuration fondamentale des institutions publiques, ont fait la preuve de leur capacité à traiter des questions structurelles complexes lorsqu’il s’est agi de se prononcer sur un grand nombre de fusions. L’extrême juridisme qui régnait dans l’administration et les entreprises a mis ces nouvelles instances au défi de prouver leur savoir-faire et a testé leurs prérogatives. Maintenant que la procédure d’examen des fusions a été mise en place, il conviendrait de prêter davantage attention aux questions autres que les fusions et, probablement aussi à la promotion de la concurrence. Les ressources sont limitées et il est crucial d’élargir et de renforcer les compétences du personnel professionnel. En réponse à la Déclaration ministérielle de Doha (novembre 2001), l’OCDE a intensifié ses efforts, mettant l’accent sur les sujets proposés aux paragraphes 23 à 25 de la Déclaration : i) les principes clés de non discrimination, de transparence et d’équité procédurale ; ii) une action réelle contre les ententes injustifiables ; iii) un traitement spécial et différencié/flexibilité et progressivité ; iv) coopération volontaire en matière de législation de la concurrence ; v) examen par les pairs et autres mécanismes possible de mise en conformité ; vi) le renforcement des capacités ainsi que celui des institutions de concurrence. Ce document présente une synthèse du travail qui a été accompli sur chacun de ces sujets par le groupe conjoint sur les échanges et la concurrence et le comité de la concurrence de l’OCDE.     Abstract: Le secteur des télécommunications s’est transformé sous l’effet d’une activité concurrentielle de plus en plus vigoureuse dans un environnement qui connaissait des changements réglementaire et technique rapides. A mesure de la croissance des nouvelles technologies et de l’entrée de concurrents, les entreprises cherchent un accès aux réseaux de leurs concurrents. Les règles de connection des réseaux peuvent être essentielles au succès de réseaux, les nouveaux comme ceux déjà en place, et peuvent avoir des effets significatifs sur l’investissement. En fait, les questions les plus complexes auxquelles ont à répondre les régulateurs dans un marché des télécommunications potentiellement concurrentiel ont fréquemment trait aux conditions d’accès d’un réseau à un autre.     Abstract: Este estudio antropológico analiza los movimientos contraculturales de la ultima mitad del siglo XX, en el escenario de la península ibérica de los años 90, basándose principalmente en el caso de los rebotados de las ciudades que buscan en el campo el escenario de una alternativa, nacida del rechazo a la sociedad circundante y en construcción permanente. Back-to-the-land, new travellers, hippies, son todas palabras anglosajonas con las que se ha bautizado a estos grupos, mostrando la proveniencia de su nacimiento en los EE.UU de los 70 y el Reino Unido de los 90. En España, las influencias son determinantes, sobre todo de un movimiento llamado Rainbow, pero la contracultura es como todo, cultural, y en España, toma un matiz local.El estudio analiza los temas claves del nacimiento de este movimiento y lo que su existencia y desarrollo implica : el desencanto radical con el mundo actual y la sociedad de consumo, la lucha contra la banalidad y el nihilismo y la búsqueda de la conciencia, el desarrollo y la transformación personal, como solución propuesta a la transformación social. Para esto, siguen la vía romántica de la huida, el viaje y la construcción de crono-topos ideales, que en la práctica, encuentran todas las limitaciones y problemas que, por definición, atraviesa cualquier intento utópico en su vano intento de materialización. Con todo, estos movimientos y asentamientos alternativos resisten y forman redes y posibilidades por las que transitan miles de estos desencantados.Esta tesis esta basada en un trabajo de campo de larga duración, a través del cual, el antropólogo sufre un proceso de membresía y transformación que son la principal fuente, en el contraste con los otros de sus hipótesis, reflexiones y análisis

    Abstract: La tesis tiene como objeto estudiar, a través de los oficios palatinos, la sociedad en la Castilla de los los siglos XV y XVI, en los tiempos de los Reyes Católicos. El instrumento o documento básico a partir del cual he podido efectuar la investigación, es un manuscrito. Se trata de una copia, seguramente del siglo XVIII, de la segunda versión del LIBRO DE LA CAMARA REAL DEL PRINCIPE DON JUAN ET OFICIOS DE SU CASA E SERVICIOS que escribió en 1548 GONZALO FERNÁNDEZ DE OVIEDO Y VALDÉS. El objeto científico es la sociología histórica. El objetivo prioritario es la estructura social, el desarrollo de la vida cotidiana en la Cámara del Príncipe, que por ocupar y desenvolverse en un espacio social, histórico, político y laboral en un tiempo determinado considero un micro-cosmos que me permite formular proposiciones y conclusiones. Se trata de descubrir las relaciones e interrelaciones de ese grupo humano. Podremos conocer: la importancia de los cargos que se ocupan, las funciones atribuidas a cada oficio; los procedimientos de selección y las diferentes clases de retribuciones; los protocolos y etiquetas utilizados. Los comportamientos y pautas de conducta se derivan de la sociedad estamental, patriarcal, extensa y sacralizada y se pueden encuadrar en cuatro grandes bloques: primero, las que implican aceptación del modelo social, integración comunitaria; segundo, las que refieren asunción de las exigencias y vínculos convencionales; tercero, las que significan la defensa del sistema y cuarto, las que establecen compensación y reconocimiento de los servicios prestados. Se resaltan los valores - contravalores y los tipos o modelos, así como los estereotipos y pautas culturales. No se olvidan en esta exposición a personajes centrales de nuestra Historia, como son la Reina Católica y el Príncipe Dn Juan, ni al sistema de gobierno: una Monarquía, unos Reyes, varios Reinos

    Abstract: Die Autorin Sylka SCHOLZ analysiert auf der Grundlage lebensgeschichtlicher Interviews, wie ostdeutsche Männer die Transformation des Erwerbssystems nach dem Zusammenbruch der DDR verarbeiten. Ihr Interesse richtet sich auf drei komplexe Forschungsfragen, die sie im Laufe ihrer Untersuchung weiter ausdifferenziert. Erstens: Wie (re-)konstruieren die Männer ihre Identität? Männlichkeit betrachtet sie dabei als einen zentralen Konstruktionsmodus von Identität. Zweitens: Welche Bedeutung haben Interviewende und deren Geschlecht als "Co-Produzenten" des Interviews in diesem Prozess? In diesem Zusammenhang hinterfragt sie die Methode des narrativen Interviews kritisch als eine soziale Praxis der Konstruktion von Biographie, Identität und Geschlecht und untersucht die Bedeutung des oder der Interviewenden in diesem Prozess. Drittens: Inwiefern lassen sich individuelle und gesellschaftliche Veränderungsprozesse von Männlichkeitskonstruktionen zeigen, die unter den spezifischen Bedingungen in der DDR entstanden sind? Hier nimmt sie die Verarbeitungen der Ambivalenzen und Widersprüche aus der staatlich forcierten Gleichberechtigung der Geschlechter durch die interviewten Männer in den Blick. Mit ihrer Untersuchung verortet sie sich im Kontext einer sozialkonstruktivistisch orientierten Biographieforschung, in der (geschlechtersensiblen) Transformationsforschung nach 1989 sowie in der Geschlechter- bzw. Männlichkeitsforschung.

    Abstract: "The Savings and Loan Crisis: Lessons from a Regulatory Failure" sets the record straight about what actually happened to our banking institutions in the 1980s. As is documented by the highly respected and diverse group of former regulators, scholars and practitioners contributing to this book, the collapse of this industry was caused by a confluence of adverse economic conditions and misguided regulatory decisions. Poorly designed deposit insurance, faulty supervision, and restrictions on investments prevented savings and loans from adapting to a changing financial marketplace. Unable to use financial innovations, savings and loans could not hedge interest rate and credit risks. These factors blocked portfolio diversification and lay at the root of the crisis. The savings and loan crisis was an accident, but it was an avoidable one. Most of the factors responsible for causing and exacerbating the industry's problems were preventable, as is made clear in this volume. This book also provides an insider's view of the transformation of the financial services industry in the United States since the 1980s: how the managers and owners make decisions about product offerings and investments; how the regulators monitor performance and enforce the rules; and how Congress and the Administration influence and are influenced by the financial services industry. Lastly, it focuses attention on the lessons that should have been learned from this difficult period in the history of U.S. banking, and that should help prevent future banking crises everywhere.

    Abstract: Diese Dissertation behandelt ein Thema, das in der internationalen Humboldtforschung bislang wenig Beachtung gefunden hat: Der lebenslange Bezug Alexander von Humboldts zu Spanien im Anschluss an seinen dortigen Aufenthalt im Frühjahr 1799, das von ihm propagierte Spanienbild, sowie die Rezeptionsgeschichte seiner Person in diesem Land während des 19. Jahrhunderts. Um die Doppelseitigkeit dieses Wahrnehmungsprozesses zu betonen, werden hierbei beide Seiten separat analysiert: In Bezug auf Humboldt wird unterschieden zwischen seinem Blick auf das für ihn zeitgenössische Spanien einerseits, und seiner Auseinandersetzung mit den Werken der ersten spanischen Chronisten andererseits. Hinsichtlich der Rezeption seiner Person in der spanischen Gesellschaft werden unterschiedliche Blickwinkel analysiert: die spanische Presse, einzelne Verteter der wissenschaftlichen bzw. intellektuellen Welt, wissenschaftliche Institutionen, die Editions- und Rezeptionsgeschichte seiner Schriften, sowie schlieβlich die Wahrnehmung seiner Person im politischen Sektor Spaniens. Hierbei wurde ein zwischen der Ethnologie und der Geschichtswissenschaft angesiedelter interdisziplinärer Ansatz vertreten.
    Abstract: This dissertation deals with a topic which has heretofore received little attention in the international study of Humboldt: Alexander von Humboldt's lifelong relationship with Spain following his stay there in early 1799; the perception of Spain that he propagated; and his reception in that country in the 19th century. In order to emphasize the dual nature of this perception process, each facet will be analyzed separately: On the one hand, Humboldt's view of Spain in his time, and on the other his agreement with the works of the first Spanish chroniclers. Differing viewpoints will be analyzed with regard to Humboldt's reception in Spanish society: the Spanish press; individual representatives of the scientific and intellectual communities; scientific institutions; the reception of different editions of his writings; and finally the perception of Humboldt in Spain's political arena. This dissertation represents an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating elements of both ethnology and history.

    Abstract: Melville J. Herskovits and the Racial Politics of Knowledge is the first full-scale biography of the trailblazing anthropologist of African and African American cultures. Born into a world of racial hierarchy, Melville J. Herskovits (1895-1963) employed physical anthropology and ethnography to undermine racist and hierarchical ways of thinking about humanity and to underscore the value of cultural diversity. His research in West Africa, the West Indies, and South America documented the far-reaching influence of African cultures in the Americas. He founded the first major interdisciplinary American program in African studies in 1948 at Northwestern University, and his controversial classic The Myth of the Negro Past delineated African cultural influences on American blacks and showcased the vibrancy of African American culture. He also helped forge the concept of cultural relativism, particularly in his book Man and His Works. Drawing extensively on Herskovits's private papers and published works, Jerry Gershenhorn's biography recognizes Herskovits's many contributions and discusses the complex consequences of his conclusions, methodologies, and relations with African American scholars
