    Abstract: Kennen Sie die Geheimsprache der Pariser Metzger? Stéphane Hardys kulturhistorische, lexikologische und soziolinguistische Darstellung des largonji du louchébem gewährt exklusive Einblicke in die verborgene Welt einer ganz besonderen Sprechergruppe. Der fast ausschließlich in der gesprochenen Form verwendete louchébem ist eine „verhüllende Sondersprache“. Für Außenstehende ist er nicht verständlich und soll es auch nicht sein. In der Fachliteratur galt der louchébem als nahezu ausgestorben. So hat diese Thematik in der (franko-)romanistischen Sprachwissenschaft bisher nur wenig Beachtung gefunden. Doch der largonji du louchébem ist sehr lebendig. Das weist die Autorin mit ihrer qualitativ-empirischen Studie auf der Basis umfangreichen authentischen Gesprächsmaterials nach.

    Abstract: The comparative investigation of the acquisition of gender in Spanish by early and late bilinguals of different language combinations is highly debated and crucial as the phenomenon of gender involves grammatical features that differ in all three languages under investigation. Against this background, both early and late bilinguals face an arduous learning task which differs in complexity. Couched within a generative framework, the empirical study focuses on 257 participants with different levels of proficiency in Spanish ranging from low to advanced, and through a series of tests aims to discover which extra-linguistic and intra-linguistic factors act as triggers for non-native outcomes in adult heritage speakers and L2 learners. The observed morphological variability is argued not to stem from a representational (i.e. syntactic) deficit, but rather from a mapping problem in L2 learners and heritage speakers. Successful attainment in terms of gender is possible but dependent on the interplay between various extralinguistic and linguistic factors

    Abstract: El libro presenta once trabajos sobre un debate historiográfico, el estudio de cómo se construyeron y asimilaron las diferencias humanas y culturales. Aunque concede una atención especial a América hasta el siglo XIX, integra otros espacios relacionados con la España colonial como Filipinas o Marruecos. La percepción del otro, comenzando por quién designa y es designado como otro, no es un tema nuevo en la historiografía, pero sigue vigente por su capacidad de integrar las visiones de dominadores y dominados, por su metodología interdisciplinar (representada en el libro por la colaboración de historiadores, historiadores del arte o antropólogos) y por la naturaleza universal de algunas de sus conclusiones, las cuales permiten relacionarlo con el presente. En resumen, una propuesta amplia e integradora que interroga al pasado sobre un tema definitorio del ser humano y que, por eso, nunca deja de ser actual.     Abstract: La sociedad globalizada se caracteriza cada vez más por los cruces de fronteras no solo geopolíticas sino también simbólicas, culturales, identitarias, lingüísticas o disciplinarias. Cruces de fronteras son también los procesos de negociación cultural y transculturación en las intersecciones de categorías nacionales, sociales, culturales e identitarias de género, clase, orientación sexual, raza y etnia. Este volumen responde a la crisis actual del hispanismo, reflejada en la obsolescencia de los rígidos modelos filológicos, el canon de las literaturas nacionales y el legado de las ideologías posimperiales, ineficaces para estudiar la diversidad social y cultural, la hibridación y la poscolonialidad en el nuevo contexto global. La cultura española contemporánea no se puede entender plenamente sin considerar sus encrucijadas globales y sus fantasmas poscoloniales. El poshispanismo propone una redefinición de los parámetros de los estudios hispánicos para responder a esta compleja realidad, ampliando los marcos y metodologías de los estudios culturales ibéricos y abriéndose hacia perspectivas transatlánticas y transpacíficas. La presente investigación examina estas encrucijadas reales y simbólicas de las prácticas culturales y representaciones literarias y visuales en el ámbito poshispánico, en el marco de los siglos XX y XXI.

    Abstract: Neapel gilt als «Dialektmetropole». Hieran anknüpfend analysiert die Autorin das Alltagswissen über den neapolitanischen (Sprach-)Raum. Die Auswirkung von Diskurswelten auf sprachliche Variationsmuster steht dabei im Mittelpunkt. Die Stadtsprache Neapels wird über eine Varietätendiskussion aus Sprecherperspektive untersucht, in welcher der Mythos Neapel als Instrument der Dialekt- und Raumkonstruktion fungiert. Ausgangspunkt der Analyse ist die Metasprache der Informanten, in der Neapel als positiv konnotierte Dialektwelt mit negativ konnotierten Dialektsprechern aufscheint. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass dieser erlebte Raum sprachliche Handlungsmuster beeinflusst und sich daraus ein symbolisch aufgeladenes Kommunikationssystem entwickelt hat, das auf der Gleichzeitigkeit von Stigma und Prestige des Neapolitanischen beruht und sich auf den Einsatz sowie das Erlernen von Dialekt und Italienisch auswirkt.

    Abstract: El libro recupera un gran desconocido de la España contemporánea: el exilio republicano en Argelia. Para dar a conocer la odisea de estos 15.000 exiliados, este estudio propone un viaje a través de las escrituras del yo de los que la vivieron en primera persona. En este recorrido, que abarca desde 1939, con el análisis de los diarios redactados en los campos de concentración en los que se vieron internados, hasta 2016, haciendo lo propio con las memorias de los –entonces– niños del exilio, se examinan las articulaciones identitarias de los autores en su llamamiento a que (les) recordemos (y) que “escriben, luego son”

    Abstract: Trans-afrohispanismos: puentes culturales críticos entre África, Latinoamérica y España is an innovative approach to Afro-Hispanic Studies. It focuses on the connections between peoples, territories, and media of expression at the confluence of Africa and the Hispanic world. The volume’s contributors apply perspectives from their respective areas of specialization to their examination of transcultural interactions in a diverse range of contexts. These include Equatorial Guinea, Western Sahara, Spain, Morocco, Afro-descendant communities in Latin America and transnational spaces generated by digital technologies and contemporary migration. The volume offers an expanded understanding of Afro-Hispanic Studies and serves as a model of inquiry in a field whose hallmark is the mobility of people and knowledge. Trans-afrohispanismos: puentes culturales críticos entre África, Latinoamérica y España es una aproximación innovadora a los Estudios Afrohispánicos. Destaca las conexiones entre gentes, territorios y medios de expresión en la confluencia de África y el mundo hispánico.     Abstract: Abseits der Brisanz des aktuellen Migrationsdiskurses beleuchtet Anne Thietz die Funktion von Sprache in Identitätskonstruktionen am Beispiel der sprachlich unauffälligen Hugenottennachfahren. Fluchtgeschichte, Konfession und das Französische sollen in den 300 Jahren seit Einwanderung zur Bildung einer Gruppenidentität beigetragen haben. Anne Thietz zeigt mit Fokus auf Sprachbiographien, welche Elemente hugenottisches Sein heute bestimmen. Auch als Plädoyer für den Erhalt der umstrittenen Begriffe Identität und Sprachidentität werden diese schließlich durch die interdisziplinäre Verbindung von Forschungstheorie und -methode neu modelliert und für empirische Untersuchungen anschlussfähig gemacht.

    Abstract: Schmutz ist Materie am falschen Ort, eine Kategorie, die nur existiert, weil sie sich Platzanweisungen kultureller Ordnungen widersetzt. Eine Ästhetik des Schmutzigen artikuliert sich in Aushandlungen von kulturellen Formen und Normen, sozialen und politischen Machtkonstellationen. Das Buch untersucht die Beziehungen zwischen ästhetischen Modellen und Modellen des Zusammenlebens, die über den prominenten textuellen Ort von ›Schmutz‹ in karibischen Literaturen ausgehandelt werden. In der Karibik wurde die figurative Korrelation zwischen Schmutz, Abfall, Unreinheit und Gesellschaft im Kontext des Kolonialismus v.a. zur Rechtfertigung rassistischer Unterdrückungspraktiken instrumentalisiert. Ende des 20. Jh.s dominieren Entwürfe, die positiv Bezug auf Motivik und Metaphorik der ›Unreinheit‹ nehmen. Mit schmutzigem Realismus und karibischem Cyberpunk wird die Präferenz von Unreinheitsmodellen als imaginative Basis von Kultur(-kritik) allerdings hinterfragt.

    Abstract: Bilingualism has given rise to significant changes in Spanish-speaking countries. In the US, the increasing importance of Spanish has engendered an English-only movement; in Peru, contact between Spanish and Quechua has brought about language change; and in Iberia, speakers of Basque, Galician and Catalan have made their languages a compulsory part of school curricula and local government. This book provides an introduction to bilingualism in the Spanish-speaking world, looking at topics such as language contact, bilingual societies, bilingualism in schools, code-switching, language transfer, the emergence of new varieties of Spanish, and language choice - and how all of these phenomena affect the linguistic and cognitive development of the speaker. Using examples and case studies drawn primarily from Spanish/English bilinguals in the US, Spanish/Quechua bilinguals in Peru and Spanish/Basque bilinguals in Spain, it provides diverse perspectives on the experience of being bilingual in distinct cultural, political and socioeconomic contexts

    Abstract: This volume contributes to the research in two different research areas: lexical availability studies and vocabulary research in second or foreign languages. Lexical availability is defined as the words that immediately come to mind as a response to a stimulus provided by topics related to domains closely connected to daily life: for instance animals, food and drink, daily activities, politics, or poverty. Lexical availability is a dimension of learners’ receptive and productive lexical competence, and, consequently, an important variable of learners’ communicative competence. Written by leading researchers in Spanish and English applied linguistics, the studies presented in this volume offer the reader findings and insights from studies conducted in learners with different mother tongues, who learn English or Spanish as their second or third language. “This book made me aware of an approach to vocabulary acquisition which has a long tradition in European research, but has been somewhat neglected by English-speaking researchers. The methodology was pioneered in France where it developed into the Francais Fondamental project - an influential approach to the vocabulary needs of learners of French. It was also taken up by Spanish researchers, and more recently developed by the team at La Rioja University. Where English-language research has focused on the frequency of words in large corpora and the implications of this feature for L2 vocabulary acquisition, the lexical availability tradition takes a much more learner-centred approach to L2 vocabulary skills, directly reflecting learners' needs and learners' ability to do things with small, effective vocabularies. This leads to a set of research priorities that look refreshingly different from the ones we are used to. Read this book.     Abstract: This study makes an original contribution to scholarship by tracking and evaluating the significance of the various individuals and (particularly) institutions responsible for the traffic of ideas both between Spain and the outside world, and also within Madrid and the interior. This has not been attempted before, and it is a necessary supplement to the usual focus on individual authors and texts, allowing us to appreciate the importance of setting the latter in the context of the circuits of knowledge functioning in Spain in their time. It looks in breadth and in detail at the nature of Spain's cultural and intellectual exchanges with Europe in the early decades of the twentieth century. Three features make it original in its approach. It focuses on a broad range of institutions, including publishing houses and journals, as 'centres of exchange', and looks at how they promoted and facilitated Spain's contact with Europe. The second feature is that it foregrounds the idea of 'cultural imaginaries' as the driving force behind Spain's exchanges with Europe. Thirdly, in terms of territory, it departs from a Franco/German-centred concept of Europe, paying particular attention to a Europe of the margins, in the form of England and Russia, as two countries that held particular attractions for the Spanish mind.     Abstract: Sociolinguists have been pursuing connections between language and identity for several decades. But how are language and identity related in bilingualism and multilingualism? Mobilizing the most current methodology, this collection presents new research on language identity and bilingualism in three regions where Spanish coexists with other languages. The cases are Spanish-English contact in the United States, Spanish-indigenous language contact in Latin America, and Spanish-regional language contact in Spain. This is the first comparativist book to examine language and identity construction among bi- or multilingual speakers while keeping one of the languages constant. The sociolinguistic standing of Spanish varies among the three regions depending whether or not it is a language of prestige. Comparisons therefore afford a strong constructivist perspective on how linguistic ideologies affect bi/multilingual identity formation.

    Abstract: This book explores the issue of politeness phenomena and socially appropriate behavior in two societies, Mexico and the United States, in three different contexts: refusing invitations, requests, and suggestions. In addition to a state-of-the-art review of the speech act of refusals in numerous languages, the book provides a rigorous analysis of data collection methods utilized to examine speech act behavior at the production and perception levels. Many examples of native speaker interactions illustrate the similarities and differences observed in the realization patterns and the perception of refusals by Mexicans and Americans in formal and informal situations. The data are analyzed in terms of refusal sequences and pragmatic strategies which are strategically used to carry out relational work during the negotiation of face. The results of the quantitative and qualitative analyses are interpreted in light of the notions of face, politeness, and relational work in Mexico and the United States. This publication will be of interest to researchers and students in pragmatics and discourse analysis, cross-cultural communication, and sociology.

    Abstract: This highly accessible book examines linguistic diversity in Galicia, one of the devolved regions of Spain. Its principal hypotheses are: that the Galician language is an intrinsic characteristic of Galician ethnic identity: that policy and planning impact on the behavioural practices of language users, reflected in loyalty and prestige factors: that whilst a reversal in traditional perceptions and attitudes is resulting in a reaffirmation of Galician as the autochthonous language, its sociolinguistic relationship with Castilian has not been resolved: that Galicians have to negotiate multiple identities, subject to constant change and adjustment. Through its innovative and in-depth analysis of Galician linguistic, sociolinguistic, ethnic and cultural revival and revitalisation processes, it also serves to emphasise the wider relevance of such studies to the case of minoritised languages in general.

    Abstract: Medieval Iberia was rich in sociolinguistic and cultural diversity. This volume explores the culture, history, literature and language of the Peninsula in an attempt to understand its cultural-political complexity and its legacy. He presents a first inventory of elite discourse and racism in Spain and Latin America by examining discursive reactions in Spain to recent immigration, as well as age-old racism and ethnicism in text and talk in Latin America (especially Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile).     Abstract: Die islamische Epoche auf der Iberischen Halbinsel bringt viele Neuerungen, die meist mit ihrer arabischen Bezeichnung übernommen werden. Im ersten Teil werden die hispanoislamische und die christliche Stadt sowie die Einflüsse untersucht, die diese vom Islam aufgenommen hat. Der zweite Teil analysiert die iberoromanischen Arabismen dieses Bereichs und die hispanoarabischen Etyma. Die sprachlichen werden mit den kulturhistorischen Daten in Beziehung gesetzt. Neben linguistischen können so wesentliche außersprachliche Faktoren als verantwortlich für den sprachlichen Wandel identifiziert werden.
    Abstract: The Islamic era on the Iberian peninsula brought many innovations with it, most of them adopted together with their Arab designations. Part One examines the Hispano-Islamic and Christian urban traditions, together with the Islamic influences incorporated into the latter. Part Two analyzes both the Ibero-Romance Arabisms encountered in this context and the Hispano-Arabic etyma. The relations between the linguistic data and the culture-historical data are indicated. Thus essential extra-linguistic factors operative in language change can be identified alongside the linguistic factors.

    Abstract: Es kommt nicht oft vor, dass man innerhalb einer Arbeit sowohl einen generativ-grammatischen als auch einen soziolinguistischen Ansatz findet. Die vorliegende Studie versucht diesen Brückenschlag anhand von Daten aus der französischen Interrogativsyntax, u.a. zur wh-in-situ-Form, zur stilistischen Inversion, zur langen Extraktion und zur que-qui-Problematik. Gradierte Grammatikalitätsurteile bilden die empirische Hauptdatenquelle, wobei auch Daten aus qualitativen Interviewerhebungen und Lesezeitmessungen einbezogen werden. Zugleich werden methodologische Fragen zur Messbarkeit von Grammatikalität behandelt. Die Auswertung des empirischen Materials revidiert und präzisiert einige vertraute Auffassungen. Beispielsweise erweist sich die Evidenzgrundlage für die Annahme von LF-Bewegung bei wh-in-situ-Strukturen des Französischen als überraschend dünn. In einem weiteren Schritt wird der Einfluss externer Faktoren auf die Grammatikalitätsurteile statistisch untersucht. Hierbei beschränkt sich die Arbeit nicht auf den Standardsatz soziodemographischer Merkmale. Sie bezieht das Lebensstilkonzept aus der soziokulturellen Theorie von Pierre Bourdieu ein, das sich in der Tat als besonders relevant für die Identifikation und Erklärung von Variationsphänomenen in der Grammatik (z. B. Präferenzen für bestimmte Wortstellungsvarianten) erweist. Diese Studie zeigt, wie die gemeinsame Berücksichtigung einer grammatiktheoretischen und sozialstrukturellen Analyse zu einem präziseren Verständnis der französischen wh-Interrogation führt.

    Abstract: Differences in attitudes to death and dying in two distinct social classes, the ecclesiastics and the nobility. The theory of the three estates made clear distinctions between the functions of the two estates which comprised the elite of medieval society: the oradores (ecclesiastics) and the defensores (warriors or nobility).They had different lifestyles, clothing and ways of thinking about life. With regard to death, the responses dictated by Christian theology conflicted with the demands of the defensor ideology, based on the defence of individual honour, the pursuit of fama and the display of earthly power. This book charts the progress of the dying from their preparations for death, through their 'good' or 'bad' deaths, to their burials and otherworldly fates and also analyses the responses of the bereaved. Through the use of pre-fifteenth-century texts it is possible to demonstrate that the conflict between the orador and defensor ideologies did not begin in the fifteenth century, but rather had a much older origin, and it is suggested that the conflict continued after 1500. Textual sources include the Siete partidas, wills, chronicles, religious works such as the Arte de bien morir and literary works such as Cárcel de Amor and Celestina
