Against the backdrop of twelve years of newspaper coverage of rape, including many high-profile cases, this study also traces the rise of “celebrity culture”, the emergence of #metoo, and the development of the backlash against it. The author places these historical events and recent trends within broader debates on feminism and the role played by (social) media in shaping contemporary rape discourse.     Abstract: This edited book takes an interdisciplinary approach to shed light on the complex dynamics involved in the incidence of online hate speech against migrants in user-generated contexts. The authors draw on case studies from Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and the UK, bringing together qualitative and quantitative analyses on user-generated online comments. The authors argue that online hate speech against migrants must be understood as a symptom of a representation crisis on migration, which can only be fully perceived through the study of the complex linguistic, interactional and connective processes within which it emerges. They focus on representations and shared meanings, community building and otherness, and delve into the role of network ecosystems in the process of the construction of public problems. This book will be of interest to undergraduate and post-graduate students as well as academics working on hate speech and migration studies in a variety of fields, and can also contribute to improving research protocols for automated analyses and detections of online hate speech. Angeliki Monnier is Professor in Information and Communication Sciences at Université de Lorraine, Metz, France, and director of the Centre for Research on Mediations (CREM). Axel Boursier is Associate Professor in Information and Communication Sciences at CY Cergy Paris Université, France, and a member of the “Lexicons, Texts, Discourses and Dictionaries” (LT2D) laboratory. Nicole Braida digs into the discursive and material structures and infrastructures of serious games, text-adventures, newsgames, interactive maps and data visualizations, in which refugees and migrants become the subject of humanitarian discourse. The artists investigate their connections to the Deep South through familial stories of perseverance, self-determination, and self-reliance and consider how this history informs their working practices.     Abstract: "This chapter focuses on how the rise of platforms is changing our media environment, where publishers still control the production of news content, but platform companies increasingly control the channels through which people access it. It identifies the new, distinct, generative and relational forms of power that platforms including Facebook, Google, and Twitter exercise and examines how news publishers have responded. It argues that previously powerful and relatively independent institutions like the news media are increasingly in a position akin to that of ordinary users-they are simultaneously increasingly empowered by and dependent upon a small number of powerful platforms"--

    Abstract: Neo-Victorian Things: Re-Imagining Nineteenth-Century Material Cultures in Literature and Film is the first volume to focus solely on the replication, reconstruction, and re-presentation of Victorian things. It investigates the role of materiality in contemporary returns to the past as a means of assessing the function of things in remembering, revisioning, and/or reimagining the nineteenth century. Examining iterations of material culture in literature, film and popular television series, this volume offers a reconsideration of nineteenth-century things and the neo-Victorian cultural forms that they have inspired, animated, and even haunted. By turning to new and relatively underexplored strands of neo-Victorian materiality—including opium paraphernalia, slave ships, clothing, and biographical objects—and interrogating the critical role such objects play in reconstructing the past, this volume offers ways of thinking about how mis/apprehensions of material culture in the nineteenth century continue to shape our present understanding of things.

    Abstract: Migration moves people, ideas and things. Migration shakes up political scenes and instigates new social movements. It redraws emotional landscapes and reshapes social networks, with traditional and digital media enabling, representing, and shaping the processes, relationships and people on the move. The deep entanglement of media and migration expands across the fields of political, cultural and social life. For example, migration is increasingly digitally tracked and surveilled, and national and international policy-making draws on data on migrant movement, anticipated movement, and biometrics to maintain a sense of control over the mobilities of humans and things. Also, social imaginaries are constituted in highly mediated environments where information and emotions on migration are constantly shared on social and traditional media. Both, those migrating and those receiving them, turn to media and communicative practices to learn how to make sense of migration and to manage fears and desires associated with cross-border mobility in an increasingly porous but also controlled and divided world. The SAGE Handbook of Media and Migration offers a comprehensive overview of media and migration through new research, as well as a review of present scholarship in this expanding and promising field.     Abstract: Die Einführung in die Kultursoziologie in einer aktualisierten und erweiterten Neuauflage. »Kultur« ist fächerübergreifend einer der zentralen Schlüsselbegriffe gegenwärtiger Forschung. Schon um 1900 standen kulturtheoretische Fragen im Mittelpunkt der Soziologie. Seit dem Cultural Turn wurde »Kultur« schließlich zum allgemeinen Leitbegriff des Fachs. Die Soziologie versteht sich zunehmend als »Kulturwissenschaft«. Dieser Einführungsband nimmt dieses Selbstverständnis ernst. Er gibt einen systematischen Überblick über die Geschichte, Begriffe, Ansätze und Forschungsfelder der Kultursoziologie. Von den soziologischen Klassikern wie Max Weber und Georg Simmel bis hin zu aktuellen Kulturtheorien und Kulturforschungen wie den Visual, Governmentality oder Cultural Studies. Die Einführung gibt damit einen kompakten und systematischen Überblick über die wichtigsten kultursoziologischen Theorien von den Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart.

For example, migration is increasingly digitally tracked and surveilled, and national and international policy-making draws on data on migrant movement, anticipated movement, and biometrics to maintain a sense of control over the mobilities of humans and things. Also, social imaginaries are constituted in highly mediated environments where information and emotions on migration are constantly shared on social and traditional media.
    Abstract: Both, those migrating and those receiving them, turn to media and communicative practices to learn how to make sense of migration and to manage fears and desires associated with cross-border mobility in an increasingly porous but also controlled and divided world. The SAGE Handbook of Media and Migration offers a comprehensive overview of media and migration through new research, as well as a review of present scholarship in this expanding and promising field. It explores key interdisciplinary concepts and methodologies, and how these are challenged by new realities and the links between contemporary migration patterns and its use of mediated processes.

    Abstract: 2015 sorgten Hunderttausende geflüchtete Menschen in den deutschen Zeitungen für Schlagzeilen und machten Flucht einmal mehr zum Thema der Kommunikationswissenschaft. Wurde über Geflüchtete zuvor gar nicht oder wenn, dann oft negativ berichtet, stellt sich im Kontext der viel beschworenen „Willkommenskultur“ eine neue Frage an den Journalismus: Gibt es neben der ereigniszentrierten Politikberichterstattung andere, wirtschafts- und kulturjournalistische Perspektiven auf das Thema Flucht und wenn ja, welche? Diese Frage beantwortet das Buch mit einer quantitativen und qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse von rund 300 Zeitungsartikeln im Wirtschafts- und Kulturressort der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung und der Süddeutschen Zeitung zwischen 2015 und 2016. Grundlage bildet eine umfassende Literatursichtung bisheriger Befunde, die den normativen Ansprüchen des Friedensjournalismus gegenübergestellt werden. Mit einer daraus entwickelten Analyseheuristik werden sowohl defizitäre als auch humanitäre Elemente der Wirtschafts- und Kulturberichterstattung über Flucht identifiziert und systematisiert: Während Geflüchtete im Wirtschaftsressort tendenziell eher als Belastung beschrieben werden und sich die Berichterstattung auf eine deutsche wirtschafts-, sozial- und innenpolitische Krise bezieht, lässt das Kulturressort mehr Raum für eine empathische Berichterstattung, in der die humanitäre Dimension im Vordergrund steht. In beiden Ressorts wird jedoch mehr über als mit Geflüchteten gesprochen, Fluchtursachen werden nur oberflächlich thematisiert und Lösungsansätze selten diskutiert. „Von 'Wirtschaftsflüchtlingen' und 'Willkommenskultur'. Fluchtberichterstattung abseits des Politikressorts“ ist eine Studie über Fluchtberichterstattung abseits des Politikressorts, zwischen journalistischem Anspruch und Realität.

    Abstract: The Routledge Companion to Migration, Communication and Politics brings together academics from numerous disciplines to show the legal, political, communicative, theoretical, methodological, and media implications of migration. The collection makes the compelling case that migration does not occur in a vacuum; rather, it is driven by and reacts to various factors, including the political, economic, and cultural worlds in which individuals live. The 25 chapters reveal the complex nature of migration from various angles, not only looking at how policy affects migrants but also how individuals and marginalized groups are impacted by such acts. In Part I contributors examine migration law, debating the role of the state in managing migration flows and investigating existing migration policy. Part II offers theories and methods that integrate communication studies, political science, and law into the study of migration, including cultural fusion theory and Gebserian theory. Part III looks at how contemporary perceptions of migration and migrants intersect with media representations across media outlets worldwide. Finally, Part IV offers case studies that present the intricacies of migration within different cultural, national, and political groups.     Abstract: "The Visual is Political examines the growth of feminist photography as it unfolded in Britain during the 1970s and 1980s. This period in Britain was marked by instability following the collapse of the welfare state, massive unemployment, race riots, and workers' strikes. However, this was also a time in which various forms of social activism emerged or solidified, including the Women's Movement, whose members increasingly turned to photography as a tool for their political activism. Rather than focusing on the aesthetic quality of the images produced, Klorman-Eraqi looks at the application of feminist theory, photojournalism, advertising, photo montage, punk subculture and aesthetics, and politicized street activity to emphasize the statement and challenge that the photographic language of these works posed. She shows both the utilitarian uses of photography in activism, but also how these same photographers went on to be accepted (or co-opted) into the mainstream art spaces little by little, sometimes with great controversy. The Visual is Political highlights the relevance and impact of an earlier contentious, creative, and politicized moment of feminism and photography as art and activism"--

    Abstract: Wer spricht wie über wen? Im Sommer 2015 erreichten tausende Flucht _migrierende die europäischen Grenzen. Die Tatsache, dass viele in Westeuropa ankommende Geflüchtete Smartphones mit sich führten hat in Teilen der deutschen und österreichischen Bevölkerung für Empörung gesorgt. Daraufhin erschienen Artikel über die Gründe für den Besitz und die Benutzung von Smartphones außerhalb Europas und im Zusammenhang mit Flucht. Jene Artikel spiegeln die in diesem Buch aufgeworfenen Problematiken wider. Im Diskurs glq{Geflüchtete und Smartphones grq{ kann ein Spannungsverhältnis zwischen glq{Eigenem grq{ und glq{Fremdem grq, erkannt werden, ein Verhältnis, das ohnehin von Diskriminierung und glqq{kulturellem Rassismus{ charakterisiert ist. Ausgehend von der These, dass der Smartphonebesitz von den Neuankommenden die imaginierte Grenze zwischen glq{Wir grq{ und glq{Nicht-Wir grq{ ins Wanken bringen lässt, werden die aus dem Diskurs zu entnehmenden Versuche diese Grenze zu (de)stabilisieren in deren Ambivalenz hervorgehoben. Die gleichzeitige Solidarisierung mit und Rassifizierung von Geflohenen tritt in den Vordergrund und im Zuge dessen kann die Art und Weise in der über den/die Andere(n) gesprochen wird zum Gegenstand der Reflexion gemacht werden.

    Abstract: Mit „Behinderung“ einerseits und „Migration/ Kultur“ andererseits rückt der vorliegende Band zwei für Vielfalt und Diversität stehende Dimensionen in den Mittelpunkt, die im öffentlichen Leben und damit auch im Kontext von Schule und Unterricht zusehends an Bedeutung gewinnen. Die internationale und interdisziplinäre AutorInnengemeinschaft des Bandes geht in ihren elf Beiträgen diesen Dimensionen und dabei Leitfragen wie den folgenden nach: Welche Formen von Diversität bzw. von „Behinderung“ und/ oder von kultureller und migrationsbedingter Vielfalt werden in Film und Fernsehen thematisiert? Auf welche Weisen werden diese thematisiert bzw. dargestellt? In welchem Grade und in welchen Hinsichten geben diese Thematisierungen „Realität“ wieder? Befördern die Thematisierungen und Darstellungen integrative oder inklusive Zielsetzungen? Wie werden die Thematisierungen und Darstellungen in verschiedenen Film- und Fernsehformaten von unterschiedlichen Personengruppen rezipiert? Können die verschiedenen Film- und Fernsehformate im Unterricht genutzt werden, um Diversität zu thematisieren und/ oder um Prozesse des kulturellen bzw. sprachlichen Lernens anzustoßen? Zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen fokussieren die AutorInnen unterschiedliche Filmgenres (wie Boulevardmagazine, Dokumentationen, Spielfilme, Zeichentrickserien, aber auch sog. TV-Jule- bzw. Weihnachtskalender). Die Fächerung der im Band versammelten Beiträge reicht von „klassischen“ Filmanalysen und -interpretationen über didaktische und unterrichtspraktische Überlegungen bis hin zu Projektberichten aus der Praxis von Filmemacherinnen und spiegelt damit ein weiteres Moment von Vielfalt und Diversität wider.
