It also develops a comprehensive and original analytical model, in which music and performance are understood as both situated and creative practices and where the fluid relationship between humans and non-humans, in this case divine beings, is truly taken into consideration"--

Through a series of Ottoman/Turkish classical vocal music compositions that can be dated to 18th and 19th centuries, Euterpe and related sources reinforce a much broader picture of musical practice and transmission in which we clearly see that the Greek and Turkish traditions are linked. Reform, Notation and Ottoman music in Early 19th Century Istanbul is presented in two parts: historical discussion and musical analysis, and complete transcription and edition of Euterpe.     Abstract: The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) is the site of the largest mass repression of an ethnic and/or religious minority in the world today. Researchers estimate that since 2016 one million people have been detained there without trial. In the detention centres individuals are exposed to deeply invasive forms of surveillance and psychological stress, while outside them more than ten million Turkic Muslim minorities are subjected to a network of hi-tech surveillance systems, checkpoints, and interpersonal monitoring. Existing reportage and commentary on the crisis tends to address these issues in isolation, but this groundbreaking volume brings them together, exploring the interconnections between the core strands of the Xinjiang emergency in order to generate a more accurate understanding of the mass detentions’ significance for the future of President Xi Jinping’s China.

    Abstract: "Lineages Embedded in Temple Networks explores how elite Daoists played a key role in the social and cultural life of local society in Ming China, notably by mediating between local networks-biological lineages, territorial communities, temples, and festivals-and the state. They did this through their organization in clerical lineages-their own empire-wide networks for channeling knowledge, patronage, and resources-and by controlling central temples that were nodes of local social structures. In this book, the only comprehensive social history of local Daoism during the Ming largely based on literary sources and fieldwork, Richard G. Wang delineates the interface between local organizations (such as lineages and temple networks) and central state institutions. While part 1 sets the framework for viewing Daoism as a social institution in regard to both its religious lineages and its service to the state in the bureaucratic apparatus to implement state orthodoxy, part 2 follows four cases to reveal the connections between clerical lineages and local networks. In the end, Wang illustrates how Daoism brought the cosmological order and universal salvation to local society, while at the same time granting divine sanction and political legitimacy to the state"--

    Abstract: Bringing together ethnographic case studies of industrial labor from different parts of the world, "Industrial Labor on the Margins of Capitalism" explores the increasing casualization of workforces and the weakening power of organized labor. This division owes much to state policies and is reflected in local understandings of class. By exploring this relationship, these essays question the claim that neoliberal ideology has become the new `commonsense` of our times and suggest various propositions about the conditions that create employment regimes based on flexible labor.

    Abstract: In the first comprehensive English-language portrait of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm as political thinkers and actors, Jakob Norberg reveals how history's two most famous folklorists envisioned the role of literary and linguistic scholars in defining national identity. Convinced of the political relevance of their folk tale collections and grammatical studies, the Brothers Grimm argued that they could help disentangle language groups from one another, redraw the boundaries of states in Europe, and counsel kings and princes on the proper extent and character of their rule. They sought not only to recover and revive a neglected native culture for a contemporary audience, but also to facilitate a more harmonious and enduring relationship between the traditional political elite and an emerging national collective.     Abstract: "In Making Women Pay, Smitha Radhakrishnan explores India's microfinance industry, which in the last two decades has come to saturate the everyday lives of women in the name of state-led efforts to promote financial inclusion and women's empowerment. Despite this favorable language, she argues, microfinance in India does not provide a market-oriented development intervention, even though it may appear to help women borrowers. Rather, this commercial industry seeks to extract the maximum value from its customers through exploitative relationships that benefit especially class-privileged men. Through ethnography, interviews, and historical analysis, Radhakrishnan demonstrates how the unpaid and underpaid labor of marginalized women borrowers ensures both profitability and symbolic legitimacy for microfinance institutions, their employees, and their leaders. In doing so, she centralizes gender in the study of microfinance, reveals why most microfinance programs target women, and explores the exploitative implications of this targeting."

Citizens against Crime and Violence studies societal responses to crime and violence within one of Mexico's most affected regions, the state of Michoacán. Based on comparative ethnography conducted over twelve months by a team of anthropologists and sociologists across six localities of Michoacán, ranging from the most rural to the most urban, the contributors consider five varieties of societal responses: local citizen security councils that define security and attempt to influence its policing, including by self-defense groups; cultural activists looking to create safe 'cultural' fields from which to transform their social environment; organizations in the state capital that combine legal and political strategies against less visible violence (forced disappearance, gender violence, anti-LGBT); church-linked initiatives bringing to bear the church's institutionality, including to denounce 'state capture'; and women's organizations creating 'safe' networks allowing to influence violence prevention"--

In Lion's Share Veit Erlmann traces the role of copyright law in this process and its impact on the South African music industry. Although the South African government tied the reform to its post-apartheid agenda of redistributive justice and a turn to a post-industrial knowledge economy, Erlmann shows how the persistence of structural racism and Euro-modernist conceptions of copyright threaten the viability of the reform project.     Abstract: As far too many intellectual histories and theoretical contributions from the 'global South' remain under-explored, this volume works towards redressing such imbalance. Experienced authors, from the regions concerned, along different disciplinary lines, and with a focus on different historical timeframes, sketch out their perspectives of envisaged transformations. This includes specific case studies and reflexive accounts from African, South Asian, and Middle Eastern contexts. Taking a critical stance on the ongoing dominance of Eurocentrism in academia, the authors present their contributions in relation to current decolonial challenges. Hereby, they consider intellectual, practical and structural aspects and dimensions, to mark and build their respective positions. From their particular vantage points of (trans)disciplinary and transregional engagement, they sketch out potential pathways for addressing the unfinished business of conceptual decolonization. The specific individual positionalities of the contributors, which are shaped by location and regional perspective as much as in disciplinary, biographical, linguistic, religious, and other terms, are hereby kept in view. Drawing on their significant experiences and insights gained in both the global north and global south, the contributors offer original and innovative models of engagement and theorizing frames that seek to restore and critically engage with intellectual practices from particular regions and transregional contexts in Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. This volume builds on a lecture series held at ZMO in the winter 2019-2020

These organizations became ground zero for a new political vision of a vehicle for women across Nigeria to define their interests, desires, and needs while fulfilling the obligations and responsibilities of citizenship. In The Great Upheaval, Judith A. Byfield has crafted a finely textured social and intellectual history of gender and nation-making that not only tells a story of women's postwar activism but grounds it in a nuanced account of the complex tax system that generated the "upheaval." In capturing the dynamism of women's political activism in Nigeria's postwar period, Byfield illuminates the centrality of gender to the study of nationalism. She thus offers new lines of inquiry into the late colonial era and its consequences for the future Nigerian state. Ultimately, she challenges us to problematize the collapse of her female subjects' greatest aspiration, universal franchise, when the country achieved independence in 1960"--

    Abstract: Landscapes bear traces of the use of resources over long periods. These reflect not only ways of using, shaping, organising, controlling and exchanging resources, but also knowledge, perceptions, motivations for actions and related social dynamics. Resources can be material as well as immaterial and constitute the basis for the development and decline of societies. They are usually not exploited in isolation, but as parts of complexes whose specific constellation in time and space can be best described as assemblages. This topic was the subject of the session `Human-Made Environments: The Development of Landscapes as Resource Assemblages` held at the 24th Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists (Barcelona, 5-8 September 2018) and forms the basis of this volume. The general purpose is a debate on new concepts of the interrelation of social dynamics and resource use and a discussion of case studies in which landscapes were shaped to facilitate the utilisation of resources. The identification of what has been considered to be a resource is discussed as well as the means through which the corresponding landscapes were transformed and the results of these transformations. This implies not only material, but also spiritual aspects linked to the exploitation of resources. Since ResourceAssemblages are products of historical evolution and mutual relations the mechanisms of these processes are of great significance. Supreme aspects comprise the detection of a conscious human formation of landscapes in order to suit the exploitation of resources, the connected social practices as well as socio-cultural dynamics linked to the use of resources. Each was designed to capture current developments in these interrelated research areas and also to help elide boundaries between ?science-based? and ?humanities-based? approaches, and between those focused on written communication (especially its content) and those interested in broader modes of communication. Contributions are arranged thematically in three groups: the first concerns primarily non-written communication, the second mainly written communication, and the third blurs this somewhat arbitrary distinction.

    Abstract: "Cool Britannia and Multi-Ethnic Britain: Uncorking the Champagne Supernova attempts to move away from the melancholia of Cool Britannia and the discourse which often encases the period by repositioning this phenomena through an ethnic minority perspective. In March 1997 the front page of the magazine Vanity Fair announced 'London Swings! Again!' This headline was a direct reference to the swinging London of the 1960s. The English capital which became the era-defining epicentre of the world for its burgeoning rock and pop music scene, with its daring new youth culture, and the boutique fashion houses of Carnaby Street captured most indelibly by the Mods, Rockers and psychedelic hippies of the time. In the 1990's this renewed interest in the swinging 60's seemed to reinvigorate popular culture after a global period in the 1980's which would see the collapse of traditional communism and the ending of Cold War, while ushering in the beginnings of a new technological age spread-headed by Apple, Mircosoft and IBM. The dawn of the 1990's meant that Peace and Love would once reign supreme again; with Britannia being at the forefront of 'cool' again. Godfathers of the Mancunian Rock scene, New Order would declare 'Love had the world in motion' and for a fleeting period, Britain was about to encounter its second coming as the cultural epicentre of the world. While history proffers a period of utopia, inclusion and cultural integration, the narrative considerably alters when exploring this euphoric period through a discriminatory and racialized lens. This book repositions the ethnic minority lived experience during the 1990's from the societal and political margins to the centre. The lexicon explored attempts to provide an altogether different discourse that allows us to reflect on seminal and racially discriminatory episodes during the 1990's that subsequently illuminated

    Abstract: In den Jahren 1971/72 waren in Mitteleuropa und Südasien zwei gegenläufige Bewegungen zu beobachten. Während die deutsch-deutsche Entspannungspolitik den Ost-West-Konflikt zu überwinden suchte, entspann sich zwischen den beiden Nachfolgestaaten Britisch-Indiens ein Krieg, der zur Teilung Pakistans und Gründung Bangladeschs führen sollte. Indien unterstützte die bengalische Unabhängigkeitsbewegung gegen die pakistanische Zentralregierung.Entscheidend sind hierbei die unterschiedlichen Block-Allianzen der jeweils agierenden Nationalstaaten: Waren Bundesrepublik und DDR ihre Loyalitäten im Kalten Krieg recht klar, so blieben sie im bündnisfreien Indien bewusst weitaus unklarer. Dennoch war mit Abschluss des Indisch-Sowjetischen Freundschaftsvertrages im August 1971 eine (vor allem sicherheitspolitische) Annäherung der indischen Regierung an die UdSSR zu beobachten, derweil Pakistan schon früher zu einem wichtigen strategischen Partner der USA auf dem Subkontinent avanciert war.Ausgehend von der Hypothese, dass für Bundesrepublik und DDR Anfang der 1970er Jahre die Auseinandersetzung miteinander ihre Loyalitäten im Kalten Krieg überwog, untersucht die vorliegende Arbeit die Haltung der beiden deutschen Staaten im Bangladeschkrieg.     Abstract: This paper critically evaluates the corpus of writings by Peter van der Veer, a Dutch anthropologist described by Dipesh Chakrabarty (unichicago.edu 2019) as "one of the foremost scholars in comparative studies of religion, nationalism, and urban life in Asia," and "a globally recognized theorist of comparative studies." In the first part of this paper, which consists of three parts, I will dwell on van der Veer`s early works from 1985 to 1994. Here, I discuss his contributions to the studies of Hinduism, orientalism and nationalism. In part two of the paper, I analyze his works during the second phase from 1995 to the present. Though diverse, I have arranged the analysis of these works under the overarch ing category of comparison. The final brief section identifies the style and mode of van der Veer`s interventions the sine qua non of which I call, after Nietzsche, theorization with a hammer. In conclusion, I highlight themes and questions, which van der Veer`s works do not squarely address but gainfully enable future research. (Abstract)

    Abstract: Foucaults Geschichte des Wahnsinns im Zeitalter der Vernunft erschien 1961 ursprünglich als Dissertation. Sie stellt verschiedene Aspekte des Wahnsinns und dessen Rollenbild in psychiatrischen Konzepten von der Antike über die Jahrhunderte kritisch dar, indem sie der Frage nachgeht, ob der Wahnsinn eine historische Universale oder etwas Gemachtes ist. Das Buch handelt auch von den bis in die Gegenwart hineinreichenden Bestrebungen der Psychiatrie am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts, den Wahnsinn auf Geisteskrankheit zu reduzieren und so, vom Gesunden, Normalen und Vernünftigen abspaltend, zu pathologisieren. Die gesellschaftlich verhängte Bestrafung für den Wahnsinn wird in den Behandlungsanstalten vollzogen. Das Bewusstsein verbindet die Begriffe "Wahnsinn" und "Verbrechen", während die Vernunft deren Behandlung in Gefängnisanstalten und Hospitals autorisiert. Der Nachbar wird eingesperrt, um seinen eigenen gesunden Menschenverstand zu beweisen, zitiert Foucault Dostojewski. Die Vernunft gilt als allgemein akzeptierter Gegensatz zum Wahnsinn. Sie ist gekennzeichnet durch die gnadenlose Sprache des Nicht-Wahnsinns, in der die Menschen in ihrer Haltung überlegener Vernunft miteinander verkehren. Anstatt diese Polarität hinzunehmen, schlägt der Autor vor, die Suche nach einem einheitlichen und absoluten Wahrheitsbegriff aufzugeben und einen Zwischenraum der Leere distanziert wahrzunehmen, in dem die Trennung zwischen dem wahnsinnigen und nicht wahnsinnigen Menschen noch nicht vollzogen ist.
