Abstract: This volume, arising from a PSE-CEPREMAP-DIMeco conference, includes contributions by the some of the best-known researchers in happiness economics and development economics, including Richard Easterlin, who gave his name to the 'Easterlin paradox' that GDP growth does not improve happiness over the long run. Many chapters underline the difficulty of increasing well-being in developing countries, including China, even in the presence of sustained income growth. This is notably due to the importance of income comparisons to others, adaptation (so that we get used to higher income), and the growing inequality of income. In particular, rank in the local income distribution is shown to be important, creating a beggar-thy-neighbour effect in happiness. Wealth comparisons in China are exacerbated by the gender imbalance, as the competition for brides creates a striking phenomenon of conspicuous consumption on the housing market. Policy has to be aware of these effects. This applies in particular to those who try to use self-reported subjective well-being in order to generate a 'social subjective poverty line', which is a key issue in developing countries. However, the news is not only bad from the point of view of developing countries. One piece of good news is that GDP growth often seems to go hand-in-hand with lower happiness inequality, and thereby reduces the risk of extreme unhappiness

Abstract: This collection explores how the Capability Approach (CA) can be 'brought out of the realm of ideas' to the 'realm of policy and practice'. Despite its undeniable contributions, one of the critiques against the CA is the difficulty of its application. How can human capabilities be articulated and promoted in practice? Is the CA applicable in the Global South and the Global North? What are some of the challenges encountered in its application and how can they be addressed? The authors seek to answer these research questions, making an important analytical and empirical contribution to the CA and its application. Through a series of case studies from the Global North (France, Germany and the UK) and the Global South (India, Egypt, Brazil, Ghana and Mongolia), they provide useful insights not only into the different ways and contexts in which the CA can be applied, but also into the various challenges that are encountered during these applications and the means to overcome these challenges. The volume is a valuable resource for researchers, graduate students, practitioners and academics alike. It bridges the gap between development theory and practice by explaining the importance of CA applications and the contributions these can make to the refinement of the approach itself

Abstract: "Mobbing is a destructive social process in which individuals, groups, or organizations target a person for ridicule, humiliation, and removal from the workplace. It can lead to deteriorating physical and mental health, workplace violence, and even suicide. Studies indicate that as many as 37% of American workers have experienced workplace abuse at some time in their working lives. Overcoming Mobbing is an informative, comprehensive guidebook written for the victims of mobbing and their families who often can't make sense of the experience or mobilize resources for recovery. In an engaging, reader-friendly style, the book distinguishes mobbing from bullying in that it takes place within organizational or institutional settings and involves organizational dynamics. Mobbing is not about the occasional negative experience at work; it is ongoing negative acts, both overt and covert, over time, that erode workers' confidence in themselves and in their workplaces and that no amount of sophistication or maturity can make sense of. Duffy and Sperry, leading authorities on this special type of aggression, provide effective strategies for recovery from mobbing as well as for prevention, and they demystify the experience through the use of case vignettes. More than a simple self-help book, this volume brings the concept and terminology relating to mobbing into the public vocabulary by virtue of its strong foundation in psychological and organizational research. It offers a detailed presentation of the causes and consequences of mobbing, helps readers avoid falling into the trap of misplacing blame, and holds organizations at the center of responsibility for preventing the abuse. In addition to those who have experienced mobbing themselves, this book is an invaluable resource for workplace managers and human resources personnel who wish to prevent or reverse mobbing within their own professional settings"--

Abstract: "This collection compares the current stage of multicultural challenges and their influence on democracy in twelve countries of Europe and East Asia. While East Asia has recently experienced sociocultural cleavages and their challenges to democracy, Europe has faced increasing discontent over multiculturalism and has tried to seek alternative routes of social integration to sustain democracy. In other words, both continents have now faced the common problem of how to solve sociocultural cleavages and how to sustain democracy through overcoming multicultural challenges. Contributors examine twelve individual cases in the two continents and compare the divergence and convergence of multicultural practices, exploring different ways of achieving the shared values of democracy in a multicultural diversity. This book ultimately clarifies the differences between Europe and East Asia in their approaches to universalizing locality and localizing global norms regarding human rights and democratic individuality in the context of multicultural challenges"..

Abstract: "This book argues that any institution that can efficiently solve the problems of collective action and accountability is able to uphold quality governance in local communities, regardless of their nature and origins. The respective performance of different types of institutions, however, is contingent upon the characteristics of the social environment in which they are embedded. Such social environment characteristics are, in turn, closely shaped by the structural features of the local communities. This book further argues that, among a variety of factors that might have contributed to the structural transformation of rural communities, the most salient is a major phenomenon witnessed in many developing countries: rural-urban migration. More specifically, in local communities with distinct levels of outward migration, community members' contextualized choices between indigenous relation-based and imposed rule-based institutions for local governance issues are likely to unfold in different ways. This generates distinct dynamics of institutional change in these communities with varying communal structures. This is the first book that uses a coherent framework to simultaneously examine various aspects of rural China's governance (including public goods provision, conflict resolution, disaster and crisis relief, and raising modest credit and small loans) and covers both formal and informal institutions"--

Abstract: The Poetic Organization explores the inherent aspects of organization that revolve around poetic processes. This book is a commentary on poetic elements in organization that are critical to developmental areas of organizations, yet poetics are rarely given the attention deserved, The Poetic Organization explores the inherent aspects of organization that focuses on poetic processes. The term 'poetics' refers to a wider definition aligned with a philosophical perspective, in which poetics emerges as a phenomenal aspect of being. This book is a commentary on poetic elements in organization that are critical to developmental areas of organizations, yet poetics is rarely given the attention it deserves. However elusive the poetic element is, it still manages to flow through organizational spaces in material and nonmaterial ways. Although many studies have been done on poetics from a number of different angles, very few studies specifically focus on the implicit aspects and how these take place. This book provides academics, students and researchers with a poetic perspective on academic research, which can revitalize studies in the field. The reader is taken on a poetic journey in which organizational members and practices are viewed in a new light
Abstract: "Alexandra Pitsis has written a wonderful book that is remarkable both for its ambition and creativity. Skillfully weaving together philosophy, social science, and literary theory, she opens us to the implicit poetics of organizations as well as giving us a new means through which to research the lived realities of social existence. A great achievement." Carl Rhodes, Professor of Management, University of Leicester, UK. "Pitsis shows how important a part poetics plays in organizational life. This testifies to the impressive degree of the originality and creativity in Pitsis' work, and I am hopeful that fellow organizational scholars will dare to pick up these methodological tools in further exploring the poetics of organizational life.'
