    Abstract: Externe Demokratieförderung gehört zum Standardrepertoire der Friedenskonsolidierung nach Bürgerkriegen. Demokratie, so die implizite Annahme, stabilisiert den innerstaatlichen Frieden. Empirische Untersuchungen zeigen hingegen, dass der Prozess der Demokratisierung besonders gewaltanfällig ist. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt sich die Frage, inwieweit innerstaatliche politische Entwicklungen von dritten Akteuren beeinflusst werden können und sollten. Tatjana Reiber analysiert am Beispiel der Friedensprozesse in Guatemala, El Salvador und Nicaragua, ob und unter welchen Umständen externe Demokratieförderung einen Beitrag zur Befriedung von Nachkriegsgesellschaften leisten kann. Dabei arbeitet sie zum einen die Bedeutung des Interessenausgleichs in ehemaligen Bürgerkriegsgesellschaften heraus. Zum anderen entwickelt sie ein Modell zur Kontextualisierung von Demokratieförderung, das die Erfolgsbedingungen verschiedener Instrumente der Demokratisierungshilfe differenziert und somit die Chancen und Grenzen externer Einflussnahme aufzeigt.

    Abstract: Repräsentative empirische Studien über Ausländer sind selten. Vor diesem Hintergrund liefert die Untersuchung von Claudio Caballero auf Basis der Mainzer Ausländerstudie mit fast 1800 Befragten wertvolle Erkenntnisse über Integrationsformen und grundlegende politische Einstellungen von in Deutschland lebenden Ausländern. Die Befürwortung demokratischer Prinzipien sowie die Akzeptanz politischer Institutionen und Akteure konstituieren die Unterstützung des politischen Systems. Der Autor zeigt, dass ein zwar differenzierter, aber dennoch klar positiver Zusammenhang zwischen gesellschaftlicher Integration und politischer Unterstützung besteht. Hier aufgewachsene Ausländer können prinzipiell einen ähnlichen Sozialisationsprozess wie deutsche Staatsbürger durchlaufen, was die Herausbildung eines vergleichbaren, systemstabilisierenden Sets an Grundeinstellungen wahrscheinlich werden lässt. Hingegen können Ausländer als Folge von Integrationsdefiziten negative Einstellungen gegenüber dem politischen System aufweisen. Der Integrationsförderung kommt insofern eine entscheidende Bedeutung zu, als sie langfristig zur Entwicklung von politischer Unterstützung und somit zur Stabilisierung des politischen Systems beiträgt.

    Abstract: Warum stört sich beim Fußball eigentlich niemand daran, wenn Franz Beckenbauer über die „angeborene Geschmeidigkeit der Afrikaner" sinniert? Warum finden wir die Existenz von Ausländerregelungen in der Bundesliga so selbstverständlich? Und weshalb ist die Vorstellung so abwegig, dass Frauen und Männer gemeinsam Fußball spielen? In jedem anderen Funktionssystem wären derartige partikularistische Diskriminierungen hochgradig legitimationspflichtig. Nur im Fußball bzw. im Sport werden nationale, ethnische sowie geschlechtliche Zuschreibungen unhinterfragt akzeptiert. Wieso aber gelten Ausländerbeschränkungen und Geschlechtersegregation nicht als Widerspruch zum sportlichen Leistungsprinzip und dem Inklusionspostulat funktional differenzierter Gesellschaften? Diese Fragen werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit anhand einer historischen Analyse des Fußballsports und ethnografischer Untersuchungen in drei Bundesligaklubs beantwortet.

    Abstract: Scholars have read the Alexandrian riots of 38 CE according to intertwined dichotomies. The Alexandrian Jews fought to keep their citizenship - or to acquire it; they evaded the payment of the poll-tax - or prevented any attempts to impose it on them; they safeguarded their identity against the Greeks - or against the Egyptians. Avoiding that pattern and building on the historical reconstruction of the experience of the Alexandrian Jewish community under the Ptolemies, this work submits that the riots were the legal and political consequence of an imperial adjudication against the Jews. Most of the Jews lost their residence never to recover it again. The Roman emperor, the Roman prefect of Egypt and the Alexandrian citizenry - all shared responsibilities according to their respective and expected roles

Wird so nicht eine genuine Privatangelegenheit, unsere Ernährungsgewohnheiten, ins Licht der Öffentlichkeit gezerrt und damit vielleicht sogar zur Stigmatisierung übergewichtiger Menschen beigetragen? Wenn unsere Ernährungsweise begründet als Teil des Privaten verstanden werden kann, was bedeutet das wiederum für die Politik? Welche Maßnahmen erscheinen dann eher problematisch und welche geboten? Mit diesen Fragen befasst sich Felissa Mühlich.

    Abstract: Jürgen Habermas vertritt die These, dass sich das Konsensprinzip des kommunikativen Handelns in den Meinungs- und Willensbildungsprozess der Politik übertragen lasse. In der vorliegenden grundlegenden Kritik zeigt die Autorin, dass diese These nicht haltbar ist. Anders als Habermas annimmt, findet kommunikatives Handeln keinen Eingang in die Prozeduralität der Politik. Das politische Handeln wird vielmehr durch systemische Vorgaben bestimmt. Diese ergeben sich im Wesentlichen aus der Prozeduralität des ökonomischen Systems sowie aus der über Macht bestimmten Prozeduralität des politischen Systems selbst.

    Abstract: Terrorismus ist schon seit Urzeiten ein Risiko. Aber seit wann zählt er zu den Neuen Risiken? Reichen die bestehenden Konzepte zum Umgang mit Risiken zur gesellschaftlichen Bewältigung von Terrorismus aus? Wo können Alternativen ansetzen? Das vorliegende Werk zeigt, dass die bestehenden Konzepte zum Umgang mit Risiken dem seit den Anschlägen des 11. September als Neues Risiko geltenden Terrorismus eben nicht vollständig gerecht werden. Daher werden Alternativen entwickelt, die wiederum die Funktions- und Wirkungsweise von Terrorismus zum Ansatzpunkt und verstärkt den Schutz der gesellschaftlichen Psyche zum Ziel haben.

    Abstract: Im Unterschied zu Menschen der asiatischen Schwellenländer betrachten Politiker, Universitätslehrer und Geschäftsleute aus afrikanischen Ländern die Globalisierung eher mit Furcht: Können hochgradig hilfeabhängig gewordene Volkswirtschaften hoffen, nicht nur die Risiken der Globalisierung erleiden zu müssen, sondern auch von ihren Chancen profitieren zu können? Das Buch versucht, auf diese Schicksalsfrage Afrikas eine differenzierte Antwort zu geben. Es wird aufgezeigt, dass Afrika zwar weitgehend als bisheriger Verlierer der Globalisierung bezeichnet werden muss, dass jedoch vielerlei Formen der Anpassung und aktiven Bewältigung der globalen Herausforderungen entwickelt wurden. Die Globalisierung erscheint zwar als "Falle" : sie ist von Afrikanern nicht ersehnt worden, aber auch aus Fallen gibt es Auswege, und Modernisierung wird keineswegs abgelehnt. Afrika gibt es nur im Plural, und der weit verbreitete Afropessimismus tut den Afrikanerinnen und Afrikanern Unrecht, die unter schwierigsten materiellen Bedingungen für Demokratie und Menschenrechte und gegen Korruption und Selbstzerstörung eintreten.

    Abstract: Öffentlichkeit ist immer wieder als demokratisches Ideal oder als schwindendes Merkmal spätmoderner Gesellschaften in der Debatte, während Privatheit nach wie vor in der politischen und theoretischen Diskussion als Residualkategorie gehandelt oder als ungedeuter Hort des Glücks geschätzt wird. Aus der feministischen Diskussion wird jedoch deutlich, dass die Sphäre des Privaten als zentraler Bestandteil sozialer Ordnung und politischer Prozesse in die theoretische Debatte integriert werden muss. Im Band wird die demokratietheoretische und feministische Debatte reflektiert und ein Begriff des Privaten vorgestellt, der das dynamische Verhältnis von privaten Welten und temporären, assoziativen Öffentlichkeiten anvisiert. Dabei wird ein Konzept des Subjektes des Öffentlichen und Privaten entwickelt, das der Verschränkung von privaten und öffentlich-politischen Deutungsmustern in spätmodernen Gesellschaften gerecht werden soll.

    Abstract: "One Foot in Heaven conflates two religious perspectives on women propagated by the Islamist government of Sudan since its inception in 1989: as mothers and wives within the walls of their compounds. Central are the biographic narratives of two working women in Kebkabiya, a town in Darfur, each belonging to a different class: low-class market women and highly esteemed female teachers. Based on anthropological research (1990-1995) the author analyses the narratives as part of the multi-layered context in which these were performed - and of which the author also formed part. She shows how these women constructed identities while negotiating the Islamist moral discourse on gender in a period of ethnic conflict, religious transformation and the waging of the first Gulf-war."--Jacket

Ein plastisches Beispiel hierfür ist die Rede von der Parallelgesellschaft: sie dividiert auseinander, was längst vermischt ist und appelliert an eine fiktive Eindeutigkeit. Es ist Zeit, die Diskussion zu versachlichen.

    Abstract: Written with uncommon grace and clarity, this extremely engaging ethnography analyzes female agency, gendered violence, and transactional sex in contemporary Papua New Guinea. Focusing on Huli "passenger women," (women who accept money for sex) Wayward Women explores the socio-economic factors that push women into the practice of transactional sex, and asks how these transactions might be an expression of resistance, or even revenge. Challenging conventional understandings of "prostitution" and "sex work," Holly Wardlow contextualizes the actions and intentions of passenger women in a rich analysis of kinship, bridewealth, marriage, and exchange, revealing the ways in which these robust social institutions are transformed by an encompassing capitalist economy. Many passenger women assert that they have been treated "olsem maket" (like market goods) by their husbands and natal kin, and they respond by fleeing home and defiantly appropriating their sexuality for their own purposes. Experiences of rape, violence, and the failure of kin to redress such wrongs figure prominently in their own stories about becoming "wayward." Drawing on village court cases, hospital records, and women's own raw, caustic , and darkly funny narratives, Wayward Women provides a riveting portrait of the way modernity engages with gender to produce new and contested subjectivities.

    Abstract: This book consists of a collage of images that attempts to convey the transformation of consumer culture and how it is related to the urban reshaping of the city of Cairo to meet with the demands of globalisation. Analyzing the shift from socialist economy to the opening up of Egypt's economy, and how this has affected everyday life of the middle classes, the author touches on various themes such as the general changing lifestyles and conspicuous consumption, the spread of mobile phones, and coffee shops, the gated communities and secondary resorts. The "folklorisation of culture" through the flowering tourist industry, the expansion of local crafts, plastic surgery and the body as a site of consumption are all analysed. Although being influenced by the discourse of the Frankfurt school on the culture industry, this work attempts to highlight the paradoxes pertaining to the democratising effects of consumer culture without denying the growing flagrant class polarisation. The readership includes: sociologists, historians, Middle East specialists, cultural studies specialists and all those who are interested in integrating visual art with sociological investigation

    Abstract: This innovative volume is the first collective effort by archaeologists and ethnographers to use concepts and models from human behavioral ecology to explore one of the most consequential transitions in human history: the origins of agriculture. Carefully balancing theory and detailed empirical study, and drawing from a series of ethnographic and archaeological case studies from eleven locations-including North and South America, Mesoamerica, Europe, the Near East, Africa, and the Pacific-the contributors to this volume examine the transition from hunting and gathering to farming and herding using a broad set of analytical models and concepts. These include diet breadth, central place foraging, ideal free distribution, discounting, risk sensitivity, population ecology, and costly signaling. An introductory chapter both charts the basics of the theory and notes areas of rapid advance in our understanding of how human subsistence systems evolve. Two concluding chapters by senior archaeologists reflect on the potential for human behavioral ecology to explain domestication and the transition from foraging to farming.

    Abstract: This book explores the relationships of thirty young people with their ancestral homeland, of Pakistan or Kashmir, and with British urban life. It does so using narratives from young people about their journeys from Birmingham in Britain to visit kin in villages in rural Pakistan and Kashmir. Its particular usefulness is the critique that its empirical data raises of 'conventional wisdom' of some governments, media, academic theorists and public bodies about Muslim Minorities
