Rogalla von Bieberstein: "Adelsherrschaft und Adelskultur in Deutschland" (BA 2/99) und eine gute Ergänzung zu dem Titel "Adel" von W.     Abstract: Email from Ngeti is a captivating story of sorcery, redemption, and transnational friendship in the globalized twenty-first century. When the anthropologist James Smith returns to Kenya to begin fieldwork for a new research project, he meets Ngeti Mwadime, a young man from the Taita Hills who is as interested in the United States as Smith is in Taita. Ngeti possesses a savvy sense of humor and an unusual command of the English language, which he teaches himself by watching American movies and memorizing the Oxford English Dictionary. Smith and Mwadime soon develop a friendship that comes to span years and continents, impacting both men in profound and unexpected ways. For Smith, Ngeti can be understood as an exemplar of a young generation of Africans navigating the multiplicity of contemporary African life--a process that is augmented by globalized culture and the Internet. Keenly aware of the world outside Taita and Kenya, Ngeti dreams big, with endless plans for striking it rich. As he struggles to free himself from what he imagines to be the hold of the past, he embarks on an odyssey that takes him to local diviners, witch-finders, Pentecostal preachers, and prophets. This is the fascinating ethnography of Mwadime and Smith, largely told through their shared emails, journals, and recorded conversations in the field.     Abstract: Verlagsinfo: György Dalos verfolgt in seinem neuesten Werk die Schicksalswege einer deutschen Minderheit in Russland. Dorthin waren seit der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts viele Deutsche mit ihren Familien aufgebrochen, die in ihrer Heimat keine Zukunft für sich sahen. Katharina II. hatte sie durch wirtschaftliche Anreize und mancherlei Vergünstigungen in das Russische Reich gelockt, in dem Bestreben, auf diese Weise die enormen Weiten und Ressourcen ihres Landes zu erschliessen. So veranlasste sie die Gründung deutscher Kolonien insbesondere in den Gegenden an der Unteren Wolga. Laut einer Volkszählung lebten 1897 bereits rund 1,7 Millionen Deutsche im Russischen Reich, beinahe 20 Jahre lang existierte sogar eine Autonome Sozialistische Sowjetrepublik der Wolgadeutschen. In seiner meisterhaften Darstellung erzählt György Dalos die Geschichte der Russlanddeutschen vom 18. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart. Einen Schwerpunkt legt er darauf, wie sie den Ersten Weltkrieg, die Oktoberrevolution, die Stalinistische Diktatur und im Anschluss daran Kollektivierung, Deportationen und Zwangsarbeit erlebten, ehe allmählich ihre Rehabilitierung einsetzte und schliesslich die Perestroika für nicht wenige wieder die Möglichkeit zur Rückkehr nach Deutschland schuf

    Abstract: "Tribal Modern analyzes what is most distinctive about Arab Gulf culture over the past 15 years and how this culture shapes distinctive national identities. It highlights the tribal as the decisive element in modern Arab Gulf culture and identity. The question incredulous outsiders ask is: how could fishermen, pearl divers and pastoral nomads catch up with the rest of the modernized world? Observers remain skeptical about the apparent clash between the modern and the backward tribal. But in these newly rich desert societies different meanings attach to the tribal generally coded non-modern. Tribes here are not primitive; they are the instruments and symbols of identity for hypermodern Gulf societies. Nationals make claims based on a newly imagined tribal identity that entitles them alone to the rights and privileges of modern citizenship. Tribal Modern explores the interweaving of the tribal and the modern into a national brand. Structural, performative and cognitive, the brand is being built into heritage and fantasy architecture; it is performed in neo-tribal sports, dress codes and language, especially neo-Bedouin poetry contests. The tribal signals a new aristocratic identity in the anonymity of 21st century globalization. The tribal in the Arab Gulf states is a fundamental and constitutive part of the modern.     Abstract: Unter den Augen der staunenden Weltöffentlichkeit haben Islamisten der Miliz «Islamischer Staat» (IS) ein riesiges Gebiet in Irak und Syrien mit Großstädten, Waffenarsenalen und Ölvorkommen unter ihre Kontrolle gebracht - ein «Kalifat», das einmal die gesamte islamische Welt beherrschen und alle «Ungläubigen» unterjochen soll. Die riesige Terrororganisation zerstört den Frieden in der Region, bedroht Israel, verfolgt rücksichtslos Christen, Aleviten, Jeziden, Schiiten und überhaupt alle, die sich nicht zum «Islamischen Staat» bekennen, und vernichtet ihr kulturelles Erbe. Der Jihadismus-Experte Behnam T. Said geht den Hintergründen dieser Gefahr nach. Er erklärt, wie in Syrien seit Jahrzehnten im Geheimen islamistische Gruppen entstanden sind, die sich im Schatten der Aufstände gegen das Asad-Regime eine Machtbasis schaffen konnten, und wie es zur Feindschaft zwischen IS und al-Qaida - vertreten durch die kaum weniger gefährliche al-Nusra-Front - gekommen ist. Nicht zuletzt macht er deutlich, warum so viele Islamisten aus aller Welt, aus dem Westen und gerade aus Deutschland den Jihad unterstützen. Ein «Muss» für alle, die die Gefahr vor den Toren Europas besser verstehen wollen. Behnam T. Said, geb. 1982, Islamwissenschaftler am Landesamt für Verfassungsschutz in Hamburg, beobachtet seit Jahren salafistische und gewaltorientierte islamistische Bestrebungen in Deutschland und der arabischen Welt und ist durch seine Artikel, Vorträge und Blogbeiträge ein gefragter Experte zu diesem Thema. Zuletzt erschien von ihm «Salafismus. Auf der Suche nach dem wahren Islam» (Hrsg. mit Hazim Fouad, 2014).
