    Kurzfassung: »The world's all out of tune« hieß es, kaum waren die Bilder von den einstürzenden Türmen des World Trade Centers und dem brennenden Pentagon um die Welt gegangen. Und ebenso schnell, wie die US-Administration zur Bestätigung dieser Weltsicht die Operation »Infinite Justice« resp. »Enduring Freedom« in Gang setzte, reagierte auch die Musikwelt auf die terroristischen Anschläge mit der Produktion hunderter »9/11-Songs« und »September 11-Tracks« - von Pop, Rock, Folk, Country, HipHop bis Techno und NewAge, von arrivierten Popstars bis zur vox populi übrigens keineswegs »out of tune«. Der Band sucht »Nine-Eleven« und das Pop-Territorium in Beziehung zu setzen, kontroverse Positionen auszuloten und Neu- bzw. Umorientierungen des popmusikalischen Konstrukts von Gewaltfreiheit, Friedensliebe, überhaupt gesellschaftlicher Solidarität auf die Spur zu kommen.

    Kurzfassung: Why are some popular musical forms and performers universally reviled by critics and ignored by scholars-despite enjoying large-scale popularity?     Kurzfassung: Es kommt nicht oft vor, dass man innerhalb einer Arbeit sowohl einen generativ-grammatischen als auch einen soziolinguistischen Ansatz findet. Die vorliegende Studie versucht diesen Brückenschlag anhand von Daten aus der französischen Interrogativsyntax, u.a. zur wh-in-situ-Form, zur stilistischen Inversion, zur langen Extraktion und zur que-qui-Problematik. Gradierte Grammatikalitätsurteile bilden die empirische Hauptdatenquelle, wobei auch Daten aus qualitativen Interviewerhebungen und Lesezeitmessungen einbezogen werden. Zugleich werden methodologische Fragen zur Messbarkeit von Grammatikalität behandelt. Die Auswertung des empirischen Materials revidiert und präzisiert einige vertraute Auffassungen. Beispielsweise erweist sich die Evidenzgrundlage für die Annahme von LF-Bewegung bei wh-in-situ-Strukturen des Französischen als überraschend dünn. In einem weiteren Schritt wird der Einfluss externer Faktoren auf die Grammatikalitätsurteile statistisch untersucht. Hierbei beschränkt sich die Arbeit nicht auf den Standardsatz soziodemographischer Merkmale. Sie bezieht das Lebensstilkonzept aus der soziokulturellen Theorie von Pierre Bourdieu ein, das sich in der Tat als besonders relevant für die Identifikation und Erklärung von Variationsphänomenen in der Grammatik (z. B. Präferenzen für bestimmte Wortstellungsvarianten) erweist. Diese Studie zeigt, wie die gemeinsame Berücksichtigung einer grammatiktheoretischen und sozialstrukturellen Analyse zu einem präziseren Verständnis der französischen wh-Interrogation führt.

    Kurzfassung: In this detailed study Simha Arom takes a new and original approach to the understanding of the complex and sophisticated patterns of polyphony and polyrhythm that characterise African music. Considering in particular the harp, sanza, xylophone and percussion music of Central Africa, Simha Arom develops a rigorous method for the analysis of the music and for the recording and deciphering of the many strands of polyphony and polyrhythm. Through a systematic breakdown of the many layers of apparently improvised rhythm he reveals the essential structure which underlies this rich and complex music. Inspired also by linguistic techniques, Professor Arom regards the music very much as a grammatical system.

    Kurzfassung: Differences in attitudes to death and dying in two distinct social classes, the ecclesiastics and the nobility. The theory of the three estates made clear distinctions between the functions of the two estates which comprised the elite of medieval society: the oradores (ecclesiastics) and the defensores (warriors or nobility).They had different lifestyles, clothing and ways of thinking about life. With regard to death, the responses dictated by Christian theology conflicted with the demands of the defensor ideology, based on the defence of individual honour, the pursuit of fama and the display of earthly power. This book charts the progress of the dying from their preparations for death, through their 'good' or 'bad' deaths, to their burials and otherworldly fates and also analyses the responses of the bereaved. Through the use of pre-fifteenth-century texts it is possible to demonstrate that the conflict between the orador and defensor ideologies did not begin in the fifteenth century, but rather had a much older origin, and it is suggested that the conflict continued after 1500. Textual sources include the Siete partidas, wills, chronicles, religious works such as the Arte de bien morir and literary works such as Cárcel de Amor and Celestina

    Kurzfassung: In the seventies, as signs of decay began to show in the capitalist experiment of the newly independent African countries, a “bard of the misrule” emerged on the streets of Lagos. Often shirtless and armed with his trademark saxophone, Fela Anikulapo Kuti tore his way into popular culture with Afrobeat music. Blending ethno-traditional forms with the reigning highlife and jazz rhythms, Afrobeat drew lyrics from the flip side of neo-colonial society and Fela’s London and American experience in the sixties. In the two decades that followed, Fela ruled the nights from Afrika Shrine, his signature night club, and the days from the turntables of the restless city dwellers along the Atlantic coastline. Fela’s Afrobeat became a dynamic mode of expression in the social history of post-independent West Africa and generated a counterculture that bonded through music, drugs, resistance politics—and ultimately, the nascence of an Afrocentric contemporary global culture.

    Kurzfassung: Main description: Welche Entwicklung erfuhr der Antisemitismus in Spanien, als nach dem Vertreibungsedikt (1492) das Land nicht länger ein Ort der Koexistenz verschiedener ethnischer Gruppen war? Dies war das zentrale Thema eines Kolloquiums in Konstanz (Mai 2000), dessen Ergebnisse hier vorgestellt werden. An dem Kolloquium nahmen Anthropologen, Historiker und Literaturwissenschaftler teil. Diese interdisziplinäre Annäherung konzentrierte sich auf die Faktoren, Räume, Zahlen und Stimmen, die in den antijüdischen (und damit antisemitischen) Diskurs involviert waren, sowohl in ihrem historischen Kontext als auch in ihrer literarischen Darstellung. Bei dem letzten Thema ist dem apologetischen Aspekt ebensoviel Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet worden wie dem kritischen.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: What development did anti-Semitism take in Spain when, after the Banishment Edict (1492), the country was no longer a locus of co-existence for different ethnic groups? This was the topic central to the colloquium in Konstanz (May 2000), the results of which are presented here. The colloquium united anthropologists, historians and literary scholars. This interdisciplinary approach focused on the factors, spaces, figures and voices involved in anti-Jewish (and hence anti-Semitic) discourse, both in their historical context and in their literary representation. On the latter issue, as much attention is given to the apologetic as to the critical aspect.

The data for the book are Mexican immigrants' personal experience narratives and chronicles of their border crossings into the United States. Embracing a view of identity as a construct firmly grounded in discourse and interaction, the author examines and illustrates the multiple threads that connect the local expression and negotiation of identity to the wider social contexts that frame the experience of migration, from material conditions of life in the United States to mainstream discourses about race and color. The analysis reveals how identities emerge in discourse through the interplay of different levels of expression, from implicit adherence to narrative styles and ways of telling, to explicit negotiation of membership categories.

Analysing organizational structures and competing discourses in American music, Paul Lopes shows how musicians and others transformed the meaning and practice of jazz. Set against the distinct worlds of high art and popular art in America, the rise of a jazz art world is shown to be a unique movement - a socially diverse community struggling in various ways against cultural orthodoxy. Cultural politics in America is shown to be a dynamic, open, and often contradictory process of constant re-interpretation.     Kurzfassung: Japan’s jazz community—both musicians and audience—has been begrudgingly recognized in the United States for its talent, knowledge, and level of appreciation. Underpinning this tentative admiration, however, has been a tacit agreement that, for cultural reasons, Japanese jazz "can’t swing." In Blue Nippon E. Taylor Atkins shows how, strangely, Japan’s own attitude toward jazz is founded on this same ambivalence about its authenticity.Engagingly told through the voices of many musicians, Blue Nippon explores the true and legitimate nature of Japanese jazz. Atkins peers into 1920s dancehalls to examine the Japanese Jazz Age and reveal the origins of urban modernism with its new set of social mores, gender relations, and consumer practices. He shows how the interwar jazz period then became a troubling symbol of Japan’s intimacy with the West—but how, even during the Pacific war, the roots of jazz had taken hold too deeply for the "total jazz ban" that some nationalists desired. While the allied occupation was a setback in the search for an indigenous jazz sound, Japanese musicians again sought American validation. Atkins closes out his cultural history with an examination of the contemporary jazz scene that rose up out of Japan’s spectacular economic prominence in the 1960s and 1970s but then leveled off by the 1990s, as tensions over authenticity and identity persisted.With its depiction of jazz as a transforming global phenomenon, Blue Nippon will make enjoyable reading not only for jazz fans worldwide but also for ethnomusicologists, and students of cultural studies, Asian studies, and modernism

    Kurzfassung: This book re-examines the relationship between language and national identity. Unlike many previous studies, it employs a comparative approach: France and Sweden have been chosen as case studies both for theirsimilarities (e.g. both are member states of the European Union) as well as their important differences (e.g. France subscribes in principle to a civic model of national identity, whereas the basis of Swedish identity isundeniably ethnic). It is precisely differences such as these which allow for a more comprehensive understanding of the ethnolinguistic implications of some of the major challenges currently facing France, Sweden and other European countries: regionalism, immigration, European integration and globalization.The present volume benefits from the use of a multidisciplinary approach, and differs from others on the market because of the variety of methods of inquiry used. A series of societal analyses is complemented by an empiricalcomponent, bringing a more grounded understanding to the issue of language and national identity.

From a sociological, literary and historical perspective the articles examine German and French texts from the period between the Enlightenment and the Vormärz to elucidate the relations between national stereotypes, awareness and representation of otherness, and identity formation.

    Kurzfassung: According to Rousseau, the best relationship between unequals is one of 'benificence', giving, receiving and repaying benefits. This 1993 book addresses the problem implicit in his writings of whether it is indeed possible for a just and generous relationship to exist between non-equals. Judith Still draws together issues in Rousseau's work which are often treated in isolation: the state, just relations between individuals, sexual politics and the constructing of a feminine identity. She analyses his works, his classical sources, and the conceptual underpinnings of his ethics, crossing the boundary between study of Rousseau as a complex and sensitive writer of fiction and autobiography and consideration of his political and ethical theory. Using techniques of reading drawn from literary theory, particularly from the work of Derrida, de Man and Starobinski, she argues that for Rousseau it is sexual difference which disturbs the practice of benificence

    Kurzfassung: French Today is a profile of the French language in its social context. British and French linguists examine trends in French throughout the French-speaking world, and address issues around prescriptivism, gender and language, and regional languages and dialects. The collection includes overviews of work done in particular areas and deeper analyses of sociolinguistic questions. One theme is how to represent and interpret data relating to language varieties that have been marginalised. Another concerns the ways in which French is adapting to the future, whether as a language of new technology, or as a vehicular language on the continent. All chapters of this book are in English, with examples and quotations in French, and a mixture of references given in both languages. At the end of each chapter, there are also texts in French, serving as illustration and as pointers to further reading
