    Kurzfassung: Herausgeberinfo: Harte, oftmals gesundheitsschädigende Arbeitsbedingungen, enge Sammelunterkünfte und kaum Möglichkeiten, sich sprachlich über das unmittelbare Umfeld hinaus auszutauschen: So sah für viele türkische "Gastarbeiterinnen" und "Gastarbeiter" seit 1961 der Alltag in Deutschland aus. Erst allmählich setzte sich die Erkenntnis durch, dass mit ihnen nicht bloß Arbeitskräfte, sondern Menschen ins Land kamen - und vielfach auch blieben. Lange Zeit schenkten Politik und deutsche Mehrheitsgesellschaft den Eingewanderten und ihren Kindern wenig Beachtung, und der deutsche Staat bemühte sich erst spät aktiv um ihre Integration. Dabei stellte die Migration nach Deutschland - wie der Sozialpsychologe Musa Deli eindrücklich nachzeichnet - eine gewaltige Herausforderung dar. Anhand zahlreicher persönlicher Beispiele aus seiner Praxis als Leiter des Gesundheitszentrums für Migranten in Köln legt er die Geschichte türkeistämmiger Einwanderinnen und Einwanderer nach Deutschland dar. Er zeigt typische Probleme, Konflikte und Lebensläufe nicht nur der ersten, sondern auch der zweiten und dritten Generation auf. So hätten auch jüngere Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund häufig spezifische Schwierigkeiten, die im Zusammenhang mit Diskriminierung, aber auch mit den Lebens- und Migrationserfahrungen ihrer Elterngeneration stünden. Diese zu thematisieren sei Voraussetzung dafür, weiterbestehende Barrieren abzubauen und eine inklusive Gesellschaft zu schaffen.

    Kurzfassung: Im letzten Jahrzehnt der DDR fanden Punk und seine experimentellen Verästelungen in Post-Punk, New Wave, Elektronischer Musik und Avantgarde-Rock und -Pop auch in dem stillen Land ihre Hörer. Wer hörte, wollte oft aber auch mehr: "Magnetizdat DDR" erzählt, wie aus Konsumenten schnell Produzenten wurden und DDR-weit eine sich selbst verlegende Kassettentäter-Szene entstand, der Magnetbanduntergrund. Ein Magnetizdat, in Ableitung von Samizdat und Tamizdat in der sowjetischen Gegenkultur. Hier wie dort, in Ost wie West, war dabei Multimedialität das Gebot der Stunde. Literaten ließen sich von Bands befeuern, Musiker entdeckten Barock- und Experimental-Lyrik, Super-8-Filmer und bildende Künstler griffen zum Mikrofon, international renommierte Projekte nahmen hier ihren Anfang.

    Kurzfassung: "After two government bailouts of the American economy in less than twenty years, free market thought is due for serious reappraisal. Free Market: The History of an Idea shows how the idea became so powerful, why it succeeded, and why it has failed so spectacularly. In 1990, the G7 Countries enjoyed 70 percent of world GDP. In the face of the collapse of the Soviet Union, it was supposed to be a story of the success of free markets. However, in the past thirty years, that number has dropped by half, and Asia has emerged as a major motor of world economic growth. Today, state-run China is the second biggest economy on earth, and tiny Singapore, with its state-owned companies, has become a new model of wealth creation. In other words, Milton Friedman's free market dogma, that only private companies can create wealth and that states hamper it, has not proved very clearly to be untrue. This book shows how we got to the current crisis of free market thought, and suggests how we can find our way out. Contrary to popular free market narratives, early market theorists believed that states had an important role in building and maintaining free markets. But in the eighteenth century, some free-market thinkers began insisting only pure free markets, without state intervention, could work. A tradition of free-market ideological brittleness emerged, and it has led orthodox free market economics to some spectacular failures. It is a paradox that an economic theory rooted in the idea of competition, adaptation and evolution, has refused to follow its own precepts. This book shows that we need to go back to the origins of free market thought in order to understand its dynamism, as well as its inherent weaknesses, and to develop new economic concepts to face the staggering challenges of the twenty-first century"

The Modem World tells an alternative origin story for social media, centered not in the office parks of Silicon Valley or the meeting rooms of military contractors, but rather on the online communities of hobbyists, activists, and entrepreneurs. Over time, countless social media platforms have appropriated the social and technical innovations of the BBS community. How can these untold stories from the internet's past inspire more inclusive visions of its future?

Riding Jane Crow examines four instances of Black female railroad travel: the travel narratives of Black female intellectuals such as Anna Julia Cooper and Mary Church Terrell; Black middle-class women who sued to ride in first class 'ladies' cars'; Black women railroad food vendors; and Black maids on Pullman trains. Thaggert argues that the railroad represented a technological advancement that was entwined with African American attempts to secure social progress. Black women's experiences on or near the railroad illustrate how American technological progress has often meant their ejection or displacement; thus, it is the Black woman who most fully measures the success of American freedom and privilege, or 'progress,' through her travel experiences"--

Examining the origins of both text and music, alternate lyrics and translations, and the song's use in sports, at times of war, and for political protest, he argues that the anthem's meaning reflects-and is reflected by-the nation's quest to become a more perfect union. From victory song to hymn of sacrifice and vehicle for protest, the story of Key's song is the story of America itself. Each chapter in the book explores a different facet of the anthem's story. In one, we learn the real history behind the singing of the anthem at sporting events; in another, Clague explores Key's complicated relationship with slavery and its repercussions today. An entire is chapter devoted to some of the most famous performances of the anthem, from Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock to Roseanne Barr at a baseball game to the iconic Whitney Houston version from the 1991 Super Bowl. The essays here investigate how this exchange of texts and translations, images and ideas, has enriched both Jewish and Chinese cultures and prepared for a global, inclusive world literature.The book breaks new ground in the field, covering such new topics as the images of China in Yiddish and German Jewish letters, the intersectionality of the Jewish and Chinese literature in illuminating the implications for a truly global and inclusive world literature, the biographies of prominent figures in Chinese-Jewish connections, the Chabad engagement in contemporary China.     Kurzfassung: "At the heart of modern Japan there remains an intractable and divisive social problem with its roots in pre-history, namely the ongoing social and state discrimination against the Dōwa communities, otherwise known as Buraku. Principally identified with 'unclean' work linked to the leather industry and Japan's abbatoirs and meat processing factories, their resulting marginalization and isolation within society as a whole remains a veiled yet contested issue. Buraku studies, once largely ignored within Japan's academia and by scholarly publishers, have developed considerably in the first decades of the twenty-first century, as the extensive bibliography provided here clearly demonstrates, thereby ensuring that the authors of the present study (2016), translated by the Oxford scholar Ian Neary, have been able to access the most recent data. Because of its importance as the first broadly-based Buraku history, a wider readership was always the authors' principal focus. In Our Long Struggle for Home, George’s sister, cousins, and others from the Stoney Point Reserve tell of broken promises and thwarted hopes in the decades-long battle to reclaim their ancestral homeland, both before and after the police action culminating in George’s death. Offering insights into Nishnaabeg lifeways and historical treaties, this compelling account conveys how government decisions have affected lives, livelihoods, and identity. We hear of the devastation wrought by forcible eviction when the government re-purposed Nishnaabeg ancestral territory as an army training camp in 1942, promising to return it after the war. By May 1993, the elders had waited long enough. They entered the still-functioning training camp, under cover of a picnic outing, and constituted themselves as the interim government of the reclaimed Stoney Point Reserve.     Kurzfassung: In response to abolitionist efforts to end the transatlantic slave trade in the late eighteenth century, plantation owners in the Caribbean, Britain, and the American South insisted that only Africans and their descendants could labor in warm climates. Black bodies, they argued, were especially suited for cultivating crops in the heat, while white bodies were incapable of such work. By examining personal correspondence regarding bodily health and the environment in the context of plantation labor in the Anglo-Atlantic world, this book argues that defenders of slavery made these claims about people's ability to labor despite their experiences, not because of them. At the same time, the book shows how planters' claims contributed to historical myths about the transition to enslaved labor on seventeenth-century plantations

    Kurzfassung: Studies of the peoples of Anatolia take for granted the existence and importance of regional ethnic communities on the peninsula when investigating issues of identity, ethnic origins, and cultural assimilation (especially Hellenization). In reviewing the scholarship, Jeremy LaBuff argues that such assumptions lead to problematic conclusions that ignore or poorly apply recent theoretical work on ethnicity and current critiques of the assimilation model. A critical consideration of this work leads to an appreciation for the somewhat limited, and at times non-existent, role of regional ethnicity to the experiences of the inhabitants and communities of Anatolia, who mainly promoted more local forms of belonging in the face of the attempted orderings of ethnographic and imperial discourses.

    Kurzfassung: "The Making of White American Identity traces the development of whiteness as a distinctive collective identification, from the early colonial period through to the January 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. The theory of Cultural Trauma provides the framework for mapping and analyzing this process. The central argument is that whiteness is a mobilizing ideology, articulated and communicated over generations by individuals and carrier groups that make use of various means of mass media, from traditional print and visual media to the internet. In analyzing this transmission, hot and cold forms and thick and thin identification are distinguished. Hot forms carry clear ideological messages, cool forms are more subtle, such as genres of country music and novels and films. Memorials, like those to the Confederacy, lie somewhere in between. The conflict over their removal, such as occurred in Charlottesville in 2017, is a key event in this analysis. The final chapter sums up the argument and discusses the future of whiteness in the U.S., when those who identify as white no longer constitute the majority of the population"--
