    Description / Table of Contents: In Zeiten transkultureller Bewegungen erweist sich die Literatur, die sich aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht in nationale Grenzen einpassen lässt, als ein zentrales Untersuchungsfeld: Kulturelle Veränderungen, die durch Migration von Menschen, Ideen, Waren und Sprachen entstehen, lassen sich hier auf eine umfassende Weise analysieren. In aktuellen Fallstudien untersuchen die Beiträge dieses Bandes unter anderem kulturelle Grenzziehungen in muslimischen bzw. türkischen Gemeinschaften und setzen sich dabei mit dem neuen »Zwang zur Kultur« auseinander. Daran anschließend wird der Begriff »Weltliteratur« auf seine Brauchbarkeit in diesen Kontexten untersucht, insbesondere im Hinblick auf nicht-europäische, etwa afrikanische Repräsentationsmodelle von Literatur. Einzelanalysen von Filmen und literarischen Texten zeigen, dass die so genannte Migrationsliteratur eine ästhetische Reflexion auf kulturelle Integration einerseits, aber auch auf verschiedene Formen von sozialer, individueller und sprachlicher Desintegration andererseits ist.     Abstract: The United States will confront a series of fundamental challenges through the middle of the twenty-first century. Using a theory of economic systems to gauge present and future global conflicts, Steven Rosefielde and D. Quinn Mills see the challenges as posed sequentially by terrorism, Russia, China, and the European Union. In the cases of terrorism, Russia, and China, Western leaders appreciate aspects of these perils, but they are crafting unduly soft policies to deal with the challenges. The authors believe that 'globalists' notwithstanding, such views are myopic in an era where nuclear proliferation has invalidated the concept of mutually assured destruction. What America requires is a new security concept that the authors call 'strategic independence' to enable keeping the peace in dangerous times and foster new generations of leaders capable of acting sanely despite a current public culture addicted to wishful thinking

    Abstract: Vom 19. Jahrhundert als einer Mediengesellschaft zu sprechen, erscheint als ein Anachronismus. Der Begriff sucht den Bedeutungsgewinn und die Diversifizierung der Medien in der Gegenwart zu erfassen und damit nicht zuletzt heutige von früheren Gesellschaften abzugrenzen. Die Annahme, dass Medien in früheren Gesellschaften nicht ebenfalls eine zentrale und spezifische Rolle zukam, wäre jedoch irrig. So war das 19. Jahrhundert nicht nur vom Aufstieg einer Vielzahl einstmals neuer Medien geprägt, sondern auch dadurch, dass sich die Gesellschaft über öffentliche und mediale Kommunikation erst konstituierte und ausdifferenzierte. Der Band macht es sich zur Aufgabe, ineinander greifende zentrale mediale und gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen für Deutschland und für Frankreich in einer übergreifenden wie vergleichenden Perspektive vorzustellen..

    Abstract: This collection, dealing with case studies drawn from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Mauritius, examines the relationship between scientific claims and practices, and the exercise of colonial power. It challenges conventional views that portray science as a detached mode of reasoning with the capacity to confer benefits in a more or less even-handed manner. That science has the potential to further the collective good is not fundamentally at issue, but science can also be seen as complicit in processes of colonial domination. Not only did science assist in bolstering aspects of colonial power and exploitation, it also possessed a significant ideological component: it offered a means of legitimating colonial authority by counter-poising Western rationality to native superstition and it served to enhance the self-image of colonial or settler elites in important respects.     Abstract: As a region, Southeast Asia has undergone enormous economic and social changes in the last few decades. Women as a collective have seen their lives transformed as a result of rapid development and economic growth. In exploring the progress made by Southeast Asian men and women, this book seeks to answer the following questions: (a) In what areas have women been able to achieve parity with men? (b) In what areas do women encounter specific disadvantages based on their gender as compared with men? and (c) How have women's concerns and problems been addressed by the governments in this region with the aim of encouraging gender equality? As the title of this book suggests, the chapters provide an analysis of the broad trends - including changes and continuities - in the experiences, interests and concerns of Southeast Asian women. The chapters examine the trends related to women in the following arenas: the family, economic participation, politics, health, and religion. In some arenas, the trends reflect the disadvantages women face, which in turn have led to gender gaps; in other areas, women's progress has been found to eclipse that of the men, although this tends to be the exception

    Abstract: Society is faced with a variety of undesirable behaviours and conditions such as crime, mental and physical illnesses and disabilities, that usually provoke different responses in people such as emotions of anger, fear or pity. In our evolutionary past, these emotions adaptively motivated the repair of interpersonal relationships, whereas more recently they may also result in other types of social control such as stigmatization or tolerance. Dijker and Koomen show, on the basis of elementary psychological processes, how peoples' responses are not only dependent on type of deviance but also on personality, situation, historical period and culture. They also examine the implications of these responses for the well-being and coping of people with deviant conditions or stigmas. This book provides conceptual tools for developing interventions to reduce stigmatization and offers a deeper understanding of the psychological basis of social control as well as opportunities to influence its potentially harmful consequences

    Abstract: Die Konsequenzen von Immigration, Pendelmigration und Emigration für gesellschaftliche Realität werden in verschiedenen sozialwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen thematisiert. Dieser Band enthält verschiedene Streitfragen des aktuellen theoretischen Diskurses, z.B. die Frage des Umgangs mit sprachlicher Differenz, sowie neuere Forschungsergebnisse aus den involvierten empirischen Feldern.     Abstract: In Zeiten beschleunigten gesellschaftlichen Wandels hat das Generationsthema Konjunktur. Die wissenschaftsgeschichtliche Rekonstruktion des Generationenverständnisses seit der Antike offenbart jedoch, dass die bei Karl Mannheim angelegte Verbindung von Generationstheorie und Theorien des sozialen Wandels im Zuge der Professionalisierung der Soziologie verloren ging.Diese Studie schlägt durch eine innovative Interpretation der klassischen Vorlage die Brücke zu aktuellen Theorieentwicklungen. Unter Rückgriff auf die Analysen von Margaret S. Archer und Shmuel N. Eisenstadt stellt die Reformulierung des Generationskonzeptes den Konstitutionsprozess historischer Generationen als einen sozialen Mechanismus kulturellen Wandels und kollektiver Kreativität heraus. Damit wird nicht nur der Anschluss an die makrosoziologische Diskussion neu eröffnet, sondern auch die kulturtheoretische Frage nach der Vermittlung von Biographie und Geschichte wieder aufgenommen

    Abstract: The book presents a discourse analysis of police interrogations involving U.S. Hispanic suspects accused of crimes. The study is unique in that it concentrates on interrogations involving suspects whose first language is not English and police officers who have a rudimentary knowledge of Spanish. It examines the pitfalls of using police officers as interpreters at custodial interrogations. Using an interactional sociolinguistic discourse analytical approach, the book offers a microlinguistic examination of interrogations involving persons accused of murder, child molestation, and kidnapping.     Abstract: Language is a tool used to express thoughts, to hide thoughts or to hide lack of thoughts. It is often a means of domination. The question is who has the power to define the world around us. This book demonstrates how language is being manipulated to form the minds of listeners or readers. Innocent words may be used to conceal a reality which people would have reacted to had the phenomena been described in a straightforward manner. The nice and innocent concept "cost sharing", which leads our thoughts to communal sharing and solidarity, may actually imply privatization. The false belief that the best way to learn a foreign language is to have it as a language of instruction actually becomes a strategy for stupidification of African pupils. In this book 33 independent experts from 16 countries in the North and the South show how language may be used to legitimize war-making, promote Northern interests in the field of development and retain colonial speech as languages of instruction, languages of the courts and in politics. The book has been edited by two Norwegians: Birgit Brock-Utne is a professor at the University of Oslo and a consultant in education and development. From 1987 until 1992 she was a professor at the University of Dar es Salaam. Gunnar Garbo, author and journalist and former member of the Norwegian Parliament, was the Norwegian Ambassador to Tanzania from 1987 to 1992

    Abstract: This volume explores the use of violence in the construction of Islamic public and private spheres. It contributes to the growing interest in the vital question of Muslim attitudes towards violence.     Abstract: In a bold rethinking of the Hollywood blacklist and McCarthyite America, Joseph Litvak reveals a political regime that did not end with the 1950s or even with the Cold War: a regime of compulsory sycophancy, in which the good citizen is an informer, ready to denounce anyone who will not play the part of the earnest, patriotic American. While many scholars have noted the anti-Semitism underlying the House Un-American Activities Committee's (HUAC's) anti-Communism, Litvak draws on the work of Theodor W. Adorno, Hannah Arendt, Alain Badiou, and Max Horkheimer to show how the committee conflated Jewishness with what he calls "comic cosmopolitanism," an intolerably seductive happiness, centered in Hollywood and New York, in show business and intellectual circles. He maintains that HUAC took the comic irreverence of the "uncooperative" witnesses as a crime against an American identity based on self-repudiation and the willingness to "name names"

    Abstract: Wie ist die Auswärtige Kultur- und Bildungspolitik in schnell wachsenden Städten zu gestalten? Welchen konkreten Mehrwert schafft Kulturarbeit in Konflikten? Wie lassen sich globale Netzwerke verbessern, und welche Rolle spielen Emotionen dabei? Welche Rolle können Kultur- und Bildungspolitik als klimapolitische Instrumente spielen? Welche Ziele und Inhalte soll das Deutschlandjahr 2011 in Indien verfolgen? Inwieweit lässt sich der Sport noch stärker für außenkulturpolitische Zwecke einsetzen? Diesen Fragen ging die Konferenz des Auswärtigen Amts im April 2009 nach. Mehr als vierhundert Teilnehmer aus Kultur, Politik, Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Medien bilanzierten in fünf Panels die Fortschritte der Auswärtigen Kultur- und Bildungspolitik in den ersten Jahren der Großen Koalition und thematisierten die außenkulturpolitischen Herausforderungen für die kommenden Jahre. In der Abschlussdiskussion zum Thema „My Space Deutschland - über Deutschland im 21. Jahrhundert“ stellten Minh-Khai Phan-Thi, Mely Kiyak, Jana Hensel, Roman Paul, Jocelyn B. Smith und Steffen Möller ihr Bild von Deutschland vor und diskutierten über die Identitäten der Deutschen und der in Deutschland lebenden Ausländer und Migranten. (ifa)

Antworten gewinnen die Beiträge, indem sie zum einen etablierte und bewährte Zugänge und Perspektiven auf dieses Forschungsfeld eröffnen. Dazu gehören Beiträge zu Universitäten in Köln und Erfurt mit ihren Professoren und Absolventen oder auch die Orte und Überlieferungsformen von speziellen Wissensbeständen – hier vor allem am Beispiel der Musiktheorie und der monastischen Überlieferung von Gründungslegenden. Zum anderen wird jedoch auch nach der Wirkung von Wissen in Städten gefragt, vor allem nach seiner Bedeutung für die politische Kultur und als Orientierungshilfe für Stadtbewohner und Bürger.
