    Abstract: "This book explores the multiform and shifting locations of borders and boundaries in social life, related to difference and belonging. It contributes to understanding categories of difference as a building block for forms of belonging and inequality in the world today and as underpinning modern capitalist societies and their forms of governance. Reflecting on the ways in which we might theorise the connections between different social divisions and identities, a translocational lens for addressing modalities of power is developed, stressing relationality, the spatio-temporal and the processual in social relations. The book is organised around contemporary dilemmas of difference and inequality, relating to fixities and fluidities in social life and to current developments in the areas of racialisation, migration, gender, sexuality and class relations, and in theorising the articulations of gender, class and ethnic hierarchies. Rejecting the view that gender, ethnicity, race, class or the more specific categories of migrants or refugees pertain to social groups with certain fixed characteristics, they are treated as interconnected and interdependent places within a landscape of inequality making. This innovative and groundbreaking book constitutes a significant contribution to scholarship on intersectionality"--

    Abstract: "This groundbreaking book investigates the clash between a desire for unfettered mobility and the prevalence of inequality, exploring how this generates frictions in everyday life and how it challenges the ideal of just cosmopolitanism. Reading fictional and popular cultural texts against real global contexts, it develops an 'aesthetics of justice' that does not advocate cosmopolitan mobility at the expense of care and hospitality but rather interrogates their divorce in neoliberal contexts. In this timely analysis, Rodanthi Tzanelli discusses questions of social injustice in the context of multiple and intertwined mobilities - business, technology, travel, tourism, popular cultural pilgrimage and social movements - that are at the forefront of early 21st-century socio-cultural concerns.     Abstract: Das westlich-moderne Konzept der (männlichen) »Homosexualität« umfasst neben der Vorstellung von der Gleichgeschlechtlichkeit der Partner auch die Annahme ihrer sozialen Gleichwertigkeit. Kulturhistorisch betrachtet ist dies allerdings eine entschiedene Ausnahme. In vielen Kulturen bildet(e) gerade die Ungleichheit - etwa hinsichtlich Alter, Stand oder Sexualverhalten - eine Bedingung, um gleichgeschlechtliche Beziehungen kulturell verhandelbar und teils sogar sozial akzeptabel zu machen. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes widmen sich diesen verschiedenen Manifestationen mann-männlichen Begehrens und verdeutlichen dabei die Eigenheiten der jeweiligen Konzepte, Praktiken und sozialen Bewertungen gleichgeschlechtlicher Beziehungen im Kulturvergleich

    Abstract: Dreißig Jahre nach dem Ende der Sowjetunion scheint es berechtigt, eine Zwischenbilanz zu ziehen und die Frage zu beleuchten, welchen Wandel die Gesellschaften der ehemals sowjetischen Länder inzwischen vollzogen haben und welche politischen Leitbilder und Lebenssinn vermittelnden Werte die Geschichte der Transformation hervorgebracht hat. Gibt es eine "postsowjetische Identität", ein gemeinsames Selbstverständnis der Menschen in diesen Ländern, das sich zugleich als Bewältigung der sowjetischen Vergangenheit und als ein Aufbruch zu neuen Orientierungen verstehen lässt? Gibt es - jenseits von Nationalismus, Romantisierung oder Abrechnung - eine postsowjetische Vision der künftigen Gesellschaften, die sich vom Blick auf die Vergangenheit lösen kann? Welcher Menschentypus folgt dem "homo sovieticus" und wieviel vom Sowjetmenschen besteht noch fort in diesem?     Abstract: Спустя тридцать лет после распада Советского Союза кажется оправданным подвести итоги и изучить вопрос о том, какие изменения претерпели в настоящее время бывшие советские республики и какие политические модели и ценности, передающие смысл жизни, принесла история преобразований. Есть ли "постсоветская идентичность", у людей этих стран общее представление о себе, которое можно трактовать как примирение с советским прошлым, так и как путь к новым ориентациям? Есть ли – помимо национализма, романтизации или расправы с прошлым – постсоветское видение будущего общества, которое может отвлечься от взгляда на прошлое? Какой тип человека следует за «homo sovieticus» и сколько в нем еще осталось от советского человека? Как экономические, политические, социальные и культурные потрясения в постсоветских обществах отражаются на взглядах граждан на свое положение, на их ожидания, надежды и идеалы, на их смысл жизни и их ценностные ориентации?     Abstract: Ein gesundes Alter(n) ist sowohl auf individueller Ebene als auch auf gesellschaftlicher Ebene von großer Relevanz. So wächst die Bedeutung von Prävention und Gesundheitsförderung bis ins hohe Alter – einerseits, um die Autonomie, Selbstbestimmtheit, soziale Teilhabe und Lebensqualität des älteren Menschen aufrecht zu erhalten und andererseits, um den durch den demografischen Wandel bedingten gesundheitspolitischen Herausforderungen begegnen zu können. Dabei weist der gesundheitliche Status im Alter neben hoher Vulnerabilität eine Vielzahl an Ressourcen und somit Ansatzpunkte für präventive und gesundheitsförderliche Interventionen auf. Technische Innovationen bieten hier ein wachsendes Potenzial, um Maßnahmen dieser Art zu stützen. Zur Erschließung des neuartigen Themenfeldes werden die Ergebnisse dreier Einzeluntersuchungen berichtet, in welchen sowohl qualitative als auch quantitative Methoden angewandt werden. Mit Hilfe der Durchführung von Expertinneninterviews werden Bedarf und Potenzial innovativer Technik in Prävention und Gesundheitsförderung für Ältere und erste Anforderungen an eine solche Technik erfasst. Eine innovative Möglichkeit zur Umsetzung präventiver und gesundheitsförderlicher Interventionen bieten digitale Bewegungsspiele. So werden darauffolgend im Rahmen einer quasi-experimentellen Kohortenstudie gesundheitsbezogene Veränderungen durch das Spielen sog. Serious Games im Setting (teil-)stationäres Pflegewohnen evaluiert. Die Ergebnisse zeigen erste gesundheitsförderliche Tendenzen. Innerhalb einer Fokusgruppe werden abschließend drei digitale Bewegungsspielsysteme unter Beachtung zielgruppenspezifischer Bedarfe bewertet und notwendige Ressourcen für den erfolgreichen Einsatz im Anwendungskontext erarbeitet. Um die neugewonnenen Erkenntnisse in nachhaltiger Form nutzbar zu machen, werden diese in einem Anforderungskatalog für die erfolgreiche Implementierung eines digitalen Bewegungsspiels im Kontext der Pflege zusammengefasst.
    Abstract: Being healthy in old age and aging healthily is of great relevance at both the individual and societal level. Thus, the importance of prevention and health promotion even in an old age is growing - on the one hand, to maintain the autonomy, self-determination, social participation and quality of life of the elderly and, on the other hand, to be able to meet the health policy challenges caused by demographic change. Health in old age is not only highly vulnerable but also offers a multitude of resources and starting points for preventive and health-promoting interventions. Technical innovations offer a growing potential to support measures of this kind. In order to open up this new field of research, the results of three individual studies are reported, in which both qualitative and quantitative methods are applied. By conducting expert interviews, the need and potential of innovative technology in prevention and health promotion for the elderly as well as first requirements for such a technology are identified. Digital exercise games offer an innovative possibility for the implementation of preventive and health-promoting interventions. Subsequently, health-related changes caused by playing digital exercise games, so-called serious games, in the setting of nursing care are evaluated within the framework of a quasi-experimental cohort study. The results show first health-promoting tendencies through playing serious games. Last, three digital exercise game systems will be evaluated in a focus group on the basis of the needs of the target group. Additionally, the necessary resources for successful use of such systems in a real application context are developed in a participatory way. In order to make the newly gained knowledge usable in a way that is sustainable and relevant for practical use, it is then summarized in a catalogue of requirements for the successful implementation of a digital exercise game in the nursing environment.

    Abstract: Der armenisch-türkische Konflikt ist eines der zentralen Themen in der armenischen Wochenzeitung Agos. Die Karikaturisten Aret Gicir, Ohannes Saskal und Sarkis Pacaci bebildern diesen Konflikt in der Sprache der Karikaturen. Die Zeitung ist dabei auch ein Medium für das kollektive Gedächtnis der Armenier in der Türkei und in der Diaspora. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Rolle der Karikaturen als Erinnerungsfiguren und die Rolle der Karikaturisten als Erinnerungsträger in den armenischen Medien, hier namentlich die Wochenzeitung Agos, für den kollektiven Konstruktionsprozess. Ohne Medien sind keine Erinnerungen möglich und Karikaturen sind ein Medium der Erinnerung. Die Karikaturisten Aret Gicir, Ohannes Saskal und Sarkis Pacaci verwenden unterschiedliche Techniken und Bildersprachen. Ihre Karikaturen gleichen Graffitis, Piktogrammen oder erotischen Darstellungen, sie sind Botschaften und Symbole einer kulturellen Hinterlassenschaft, so wird beispielsweise der tabuisierte Diskurs der Sexualität mit dem tabuisierten Diskurs des armenischen Genozids in der Türkei verbunden, ein Tabu wird durch ein anderes Tabu ersetzt. Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt, dass die Karikaturisten die Funktion von modernen armenischen Aschugs, den Minnesängern der Gemeinschaft, übernehmen. Anstatt die Erinnerungen wie früher persönlich von Dorf zu Dorf tragen, oder wie im europäischen Mittelalter von Burg zu Burg, übernimmt diese Reise der Erinnerung die Zeitung Agos, um den Rezipienten mit Botschaften aus der Heimat zu versorgen. Durch die Zeitung wird der Rezipient an die (armenische) Vergangenheit erinnert. An diese Erinnerung wird versucht, die kollektive Gedächtnis der Armenier als Ersatz für das fehlende kommunikative Gedächtnis zu etablieren.
    Abstract: The Armenian-Turkish conflict is among the key subjects treated in the Armenian weekly Agos. The caricaturists Aret Gicir, Ohannes Saskal, and Sarkis Pacaci illustrate this conflict in the language of caricatures. The newspaper is thus also a medium for the collective memory of Armenians in Turkey and in the diaspora. This dissertation examines the role of caricatures as memory figures and the role of the caricaturists as carriers of memory in the Armenian media, here specifically the Agos weekly, for the collective process of construction. Memories are not possible without media, and caricatures are a medium of memory. The caricaturists Aret Gicir, Ohannes Saskal, and Sarkis Pacaci use different techniques and imagery. Similar to graffiti, pictograms, or erotic depictions, their caricatures are messages and symbols of a cultural legacy. The tabooed discourse on sexuality, for example, is related to the tabooed discourse of the Armenian genocide in Turkey; one taboo replaces another. This thesis shows that the caricaturists assume the function of modern Armenian ashughs, the bards of the community. Instead of the earlier practice of transmitting the memories personally from village to village, or from castle to castle, as was done in medieval Europe, this journey of remembrance is carried out by the Agos newspaper in order to provide recipients with messages from home. The newspaper serves to remind recipients of the (Armenian) past. Through this memory, an attempt is made to establish the collective memory of the Armenians as a substitute for the lacking communicative memory.

    Abstract: This book examines the relationship between the Putin regime and Russkii Obraz, a neo-nazi organization that became a major force on Russia's radical nationalist scene in 2008-10. It shows how Russkii Obraz's rise was boosted by the regime's policy of managed nationalism,' which mobilised radical nationalist proxies against opponents of authoritarianism. In return for undermining moderate nationalists and pro-democracy activists, Russkii Obraz received official support and access to public space. What made this collaboration politically hazardous for the Kremlin was Russkii Obraz's neo-Nazi ideology and its connections to BORN, a terrorist group responsible for a series of high-profile killings. When security forces captured the ringleader of BORN, they precipitated the destruction of Russkii Obraz and a crisis for managed nationalism. Using court records and extensive media and internet sources, this book sheds new light on the complex interaction between the Kremlin, the far-right, and neo-Nazi skinheads during Russia's descent into authoritarianism

    Abstract: In der vorliegenden Dissertation werden vier Studien vorgestellt, in denen untersucht wurde, wie altrozentrische (Mimikry) und egozentrische (Selbstprojektion) Prozesse der sozialen Kognition in Abhängigkeit vom sozialen Kontext und persönlichen Dispositionen reguliert werden. Studie 1 zeigte, dass die Tendenz, fröhliche Gesichtsausdrücke anderer nachzuahmen abhängig von dem mit der beobachteten Person assoziierten Belohnungswert ist. Die Auswirkung der Belohnung ging jedoch weder in die vorhergesagte Richtung, noch konnten wir einen Einfluss von Oxytocin, einem Hormon, das der Neurobiologie der sozialen Anpassung zugrunde liegt, finden. Studie 2 zeigte, im Vergleich zu vorherigen Studien, keine allgemeine Verbesserung der automatischen Nachahmung nach direktem Blickkontakt im Vergleich zum abgewandten Blick. Wir konnten jedoch potenzielle dispositionelle Faktoren (z.B. autistische Eigenschaften) identifizieren, denen unterschiedlichen Mimikry-Reaktionen auf den Blickkontakt zugrunde liegen könnten. Studie 3 kombinierte kurze Phasen der Emotionsinduktion mit psychophysischen Messungen der Emotionswahrnehmung. Es zeigte sich, dass emotionale Gesichtsausdrücke tendenziell als fröhlicher beurteilt werden, wenn Personen angeben, dass sie sich fröhlich im Vergleich zu traurig fühlen. Emotionale egozentrische Verzerrungen wurden in Studie 4 erneut untersucht. Im Gegensatz zu unseren Vorhersagen fanden wir jedoch keine stärkeren egozentrischen Verzerrungen, wenn die Teilnehmenden emotionale Gesichtsausdrücke von ähnlichen im Vergleich zu unähnlichen Personen beurteilten. In allen Studien fanden wir Hinweise für den kontextabhängigen Charakter der sozialen Kognition. Allerdings konnten wir einige der in der Literatur berichteten Phänomene nicht replizieren. Diese Ergebnisse unterstreichen die Notwendigkeit, die Robustheit und Generalisierbarkeit früherer Befunde systematisch neu zu bewerten.
    Abstract: This dissertation presents four studies that investigated how altercentric (mimicry) and egocentric (self-projection) processes of social cognition are regulated according to the social context and personal dispositions. Study 1 showed that the tendency to mimic others’ happy facial expressions depends on the reward value associated with the observed agent. However, the effects of reward were not in the hypothesised direction, nor could we detect an influence of oxytocin treatment, a hormone involved in the neurobiology of social adaptation. Study 2 could not detect a general enhancement of the tendency to automatically imitate others’ hand actions following direct gaze compared to averted gaze, in contrast to previous studies. However, we could identify dispositional factors (e.g., autistic traits) that might underlie different mimicry responses to gaze cues. Combining brief emotion induction blocks with psychophysical measures of emotion perception, Study 3 showed that facial emotional expressions tend to be judged as happier when individuals feel happy than when they feel sad. Emotional egocentric biases were replicated in Study 4. But contrary to our predictions, we did not find stronger egocentric biases when participants judged emotional facial expressions of similar compared to dissimilar others. Across all studies, we found evidence supporting the contextual nature of social cognition. However, we could not replicate some of the phenomena reported in the literature. These results highlight the need to systematically re-evaluate the robustness and generalizability of prior findings.

    Abstract: Konversionen zum Islam erregen Neugier, Faszination, und auch Angst – gerade seit den Terroranschlägen des 11. Septembers 2001 und den darauffolgenden islamistischen Anschlägen auch in Europa. Das Phänomen wirft besonders in diesem Kontext Fragen zu Motivation zur Konversion, dem Bezug der Konvertiten zu ihrem zum Herkunftskontext und zur sozialwissenschaftlichen und sicherheitspolitischen Bewertung des Phänomens auf. Um Antworten auf diese Fragen näher zu kommen, hat die Autorin zwischen 2009 und 2011 insgesamt 27 Konvertiten zum Islam in Deutschland, England und Frankreich interviewt und ihre Einstellungen, Identitätsausdeutungen und Relevanzen untersucht. Die Ergebnisse ihrer Auswertung setzt sie mit einer Betrachtung des Phänomens des jugendkulturellen Salafismus in Bezug und entwickelt auf dieser Basis zwei grundlegend unterschiedliche Kategorien des Wechsels zum Islam: Die „Konversion zum reflexiven Islam“ und die „Alternation zu einer jugendkulturellen Ausprägung des Salafismus“.
    Abstract: Conversions to Islam evoke curiosity, fascination, and also fear – especially since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and Islamist terrorist attacks that followed also in Europe. The phenomenon raises questions regarding the motifs for conversion, the relation of converts to their society of origin, and the sociological assessment as well as security policy aspects of the phenomenon. In order to come closer to answers to these questions, the author interviewed 27 converts to Islam in Germany, England and France, and analysed their attitudes, identity reconstruction and relevances. She compared the results with a reflection on the phenomenon of a youth-cultural phenomenon of Salafism and developed two fundamentally different categories of people choosing Islam as their religion: “conversion to reflexive Islam” and “alternation to a youth-cultural interpretation of Salafism”.

    Abstract: Die vorliegende Dissertation untersucht die Relevanz von Kontrollüberzeugungen in der intergenerationalen Transmission von sozialem Status. Motiviert ist die Arbeit von der Frage nach der Möglichkeit Chancengerechtigkeit durch die Verringerung herkunftsbedingter Unterschiede in Kontrollüberzeugungen zu erhöhen. Nach einer Einführung des zentralen Konstruktes werden im theoretischen Teil durch die Zusammenführung soziologischer und sozialpsychologischer Theorien potentielle Transmissionsmechanismen erörtert. Der empirische Teil prüft den postulierten Transmissionskanal anhand längsschnittlicher Daten. Um die Möglichkeit der Verringerung herkunftsbedingter Unterschiede in Kontrollüberzeugungen abzuschätzen wurde mit Hilfe von Zwillingsdaten und einer randomisiert kontrollierten Interventionsstudie untersucht wie stark Kontrollüberzeugung genetisch determiniert sind beziehungsweise von sozialen Faktoren innerhalb und außerhalb des familiären Kontextes beeinflusst werden. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass Kontrollüberzeugungen den Einfluss des Herkunftsstatus auf den eigenen Status teilweise mediieren. In Übereinstimmung mit bisherigen Studien weisen die Ergebnisse der Zwillingsstudien darauf hin, dass Kontrollüberzeugungen in hohem sozial determiniert sind. Die Interventionsstudie indiziert ,dass Kontrollüberzeugungen gezielt verändert werden können. Im konkreten Fall konnten externe, fatalistische Kontrollüberzeugungen durch ein Mentoringprogramm verringert werden. Abschließend wird die gesellschaftliche Norm zur Internalität kritisch betrachtet. Sowohl internale als auch externale Kontrollüberzeugungen können adaptiv sein, sofern sie auf realistischen Einschätzungen der tatsächlich vorhandenen Kontrollmöglichkeiten basieren. Die Grenzen der tatsächlich vorhanden Kontrollmöglichkeiten zu erforschen und zu benennen wird als wichtiges Ziel soziologischer Forschung in diesem Bereich herausgestellt.
    Abstract: This dissertation aims to assess the role of locus of control (LoC) in the intergenerational transmission of social status as well as the potential to raise fair equality of opportunity by reducing the social gradient in LoC. After the core concept of locus of control is introduced, the theoretical part explicates the mechanisms through which social status is likely to be reproduced via LoC across generations. Structural equation modeling is used to assess the substantive importance of LoC in the intergenerational reproduction of social status using data from the British Cohort Study 1970. The evidence suggests that LoC partly mediates the influence of parents’ status on own status attainment: Children from low-SES households are less likely to be endowed with the type of LoC that benefits status attainment later in life. Hence LoC is a potential lever for reducing intergenerational status persistence. As the potency of this lever depends on the degree to which LoC is socially formed rather than genetically determined another aim was to provide evidence on the contribution of genetic inheritance and different social actors at different points in the life-span. Towards this end, information from a multi-cohort twin study and a randomized controlled intervention study were analyzed. The evidence suggests that extra-familial influences become more important in determining locus of control across age, and that a low-intensity mentoring program can reduce fatalistic LoC in low-status children, but not their overall locus of control. The overall discussion reflects upon a general social norm of internality. It is argued that internality and externality are functional if they are based on a realistic assessment of the boundaries of control. Providing empirical evidence for these boundaries is endorsed as an important goal for social scientific research.

    Abstract: Die wachsende Zahl an Menschen, die aus ihren Herkunftsländern fliehen musste und nach 2015 in Berlin ankam, stellte städtische Einrichtungen und die Bereitstellung sozioökonomischer Dienstleistungen für Personen mit diversen soziokulturellem und politischen Hintergründen vor eine große Herausforderung. Es gilt anzunehmen, dass zusätzlich zu früheren traumatischen Erfahrungen, der mehrdimensionale und komplizierte Prozess der Verteilung von Geflüchteten in städtischen Räumen zu Belastungen führen und die Prävalenz psychischer Störungen erhöhen kann. Angesichts der Tatsache, dass geflüchtete Frauen verstärkt unter verschiedenen Formen stressbedingter Störungen leiden, zielt die Dissertation darauf ab, jene sozialen Stressoren in drei verschiedenen sozio-räumlichen Settings zu untersuchen, welchen sich geflüchtete Frauen bei ihrer Ankunft in Berlin ausgesetzt wahrnahmen.
    Abstract: The growing number of forcibly displaced people arriving in Berlin after 2015 brought about an extensive challenge in providing urban socio-economic facilities and services for numerous individuals from different socio-cultural and political backgrounds. The multi-dimensional and complicated process of resettlement of refugees in urban spaces, in addition to their earlier traumatic experiences, might result in distress and intensify the prevalence of mental disorders.     Abstract: Die explorative Studie nutzt qualitative Interviews mit einfachen Bürgern um das Problem der allgegenwärtigen und anhaltenden Alltagskorruption in post-sowjetischen Staaten zu analysieren. Es wird zum einen nach den zugrunde liegenden Einstellungen, Werten und Erwartungen der Klienten gefragt, die diese korrupt handeln lassen, zum anderen wird der Einfluss dieser alltäglichen informellen Praktiken auf Entwicklung und Qualität von demokratischen Institutionen in post-sowjetischen Staaten untersucht. Die Ergebnisse des ersten Teils legen nahe, dass sich der größte Einfluss auf die Bereitschaft zu korruptem Handeln aus der Kombination der Effekte aus sowjetischem Erbe und rationalem Verhalten, das die Situation als ein Problem kollektiven Handelns interpretiert, ergibt. Bezüglich der Frage nach der Wirkung von informellen Praktiken und mit ihnen einhergehenden sowjetischen Einstellungen auf die Entwicklung von funktionierenden demokratischen Institutionen zeigt die Studie eine Reihe von problematischen Aspekten auf: Zuvorderst den Vorzug von individuellen vor kollektiven Lösungen sowie den anhaltenden Effekt von informellen Netzwerken, kombiniert mit einer tiefen Abneigung gegenüber dem Staat und einem schwachen Gefühl der eigenen Wirksamkeit. Zusammengenommen bilden diese ein schwerwiegendes Hindernis für politische Partizipation und die Entwicklung eines gesellschaftlichen Gemeinschaftsgefühls. Entgegen der gängigen Forschungs-meinung hat diese Studie also gezeigt, dass bestimmte Formen von Korruption, genauer der besondere Typ der post-sowjetischen informellen Transaktionen, einen negativen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung demokratischer Institutionen haben und die Wirkungsrichtung zwischen Demokratie und Korruption nicht allein von schwachen demokratischen Institutionen zu mehr Korruption zeigt.
    Abstract: The explorative study uses qualitative interviews with ordinary citizens to examine the problem of pervasiveness and persistence of administrative corruption in the Soviet successor states. It analyses the problem on two levels, taking an interest in the underlying attitudes, values and expectations of why clients engage in corrupt transactions, and asking about the influence of these low-level informal practices on the development and quality of democratic institutions in post-soviet states. Regarding the former, the analysis established the combined effect of Soviet legacy and rational behaviour interpreting the situation as a problem of collective action. These two are the main drivers influencing the readiness for corrupt transactions. They mutually reinforce each other and the highest propensity to act corruptly is found when these two aspects coincide. The answer to the question whether the lasting impact of informal practices and Soviet attitudinal patterns going along with them conflicts with the development of well-functioning, democratic institutions was clearly affirmative. The study showed that it is particularly a preference of individual over collective solutions and the continued effect of persisting informal networks combined with a deep disregard of the state and a low feeling of agency that pose serious obstacles to the quality of political participation and to the sense of community on the societal level. Contrary to the common argument the study has therefore established that the causality in the nexus between democracy and corruption is not a one-way road leading from weak democratic institutions to higher levels of corruption, but that certain forms of corruption, more precisely the specific type of post-soviet informality, have a negative impact on the development of democratic institutions making causality follow a bidirectional path and constituting a vicious circle of informality.

    Abstract: Elektrifizierte Lastenfahrräder werden als ein Lösungsansatz für die wachsenden Herausforderungen des städtischen Wirtschaftsverkehrs gesehen. Fokus dieser Arbeit ist eine Abschätzung des Einsatzpotenzials dieses Fahrzeugkonzepts unter Betrachtung von konzeptionellen, verkehrlichen und wirtschaftlichen Aspekten. Als kumulative Dissertation enthält sie fünf Fachartikel, gruppiert zu drei Forschungsbeiträgen. Im ersten Forschungsbeitrag wird erörtert, wie erfolgversprechend das E-Lastenrad, eine Neuauflage des alten Konzepts Lastenfahrrad, in einem Markt mit ersten Anwendern (Kurierdienstleistung) ist. Die Auftragsstruktur im Stadtkuriergeschäft bietet ein substanzielles Marktpotenzial für E-Lastenräder, allerdings erschwert die Positionierung zwischen zwei etablierten Modi (Pkw und Fahrrad) den Markteintritt. Der zweite Teil der Analyse weitet den Blick auf alle Branchen und bietet eine strukturierte Beschreibung der verschiedenartigen Einflussfaktoren (Treiber und Hemmnisse), die auf die Lastenradnutzung im städtischen Wirtschaftsverkehr wirken. Als relevante Entscheidungskriterien konnten identifiziert werden: fahrzeugseitige Aspekte, Strukturen und Prozesse des adoptierenden Unternehmens, Einstellungen der Entscheider*innen, weiche Faktoren sowie regulative und räumliche Rahmenbedingungen. Der dritte Beitrag thematisiert die operative Eignung des E-Lastenrads, indem seine Fahrtzeiten einem Pkw gegenübergestellt werden. Bei Strecken bis zu 3 km sind beide Modi nahezu gleich schnell. Die Hälfte aller Fahrten bis 20 km Distanz würde bei einem Wechsel vom Pkw zum Lastenrad höchstens 2–10 min länger dauern (ohne Berücksichtigung der Parksuchzeit). Bereits kleine Änderungen an den Verkehrsbedingungen könnten noch bestehende Vorteile des Pkw spürbar verringern. Insgesamt erweitert die Arbeit maßgeblich das Wissen zu einem „neuen alten“ Fahrzeugkonzept, dem ein Potenzial zur Auflösung von bislang auf das Automobil hin ausgerichteten Systemen beigemessen wird.
    Abstract: Shifting trips to electric cargo bikes is one possible solution to deal with the growing challenges of urban commercial transport. This thesis combines conceptual, transport-related, and economic aspects as a foundation to assess the feasibility of this vehicle concept for freight and service trips. It contains five scientific papers, which provide three research contributions. The first contribution identifies the potentials of electric cargo bikes among first users (i.e., courier logistics services). Electric cargo bikes are an updated and re-envisioned version of freight bicycles. The features of point-to-point courier logistics assignments offer a substantial market opportunity for electric cargo bikes. However, being positioned between two established modes (i.e., car and bicycle) handicaps the market entry of cargo bikes. For the second contribution, the scope was widened to include all business sectors. A structured description is presented of the various determinants (i.e., drivers and barriers) affecting commercial cargo bike use. Among these were vehicle-specific factors, structures and practices of the company, attitudes of decision-makers, soft factors, regulatory frameworks, and spatial conditions. The third contribution explores the travel time differences between electric cargo bikes and cars for commercial trips. For trip distances of up to 3 kilometers, the travel times of both modes largely overlap. Half of all trips up to 20 kilometers would take only a maximum of 2 to 10 minutes longer by electric cargo bike (excluding the additional time for finding a parking spot). Small modifications in traffic could have considerable effects in reducing the current travel time advantages of cars. Consequently, this dissertation contributes towards the state-of-research by expanding the scientific knowledge of a type of vehicle that has the potential to disrupt car-dependent transportation systems.

    Abstract: Trotz ihrer zunehmenden wissenschaftlichen und praktischen Bedeutung sind die Zusammenhänge zwischen Umwelt und Friedenskonsolidierung (engl. peacebuilding) noch wenig erforscht. Während in der Forschungsliteratur mehrere Möglichkeiten identifiziert werden, wie gemeinsam genutzte natürliche Ressourcen als Katalysatoren für den Frieden zwischen Konfliktparteien fungieren können, gibt es kaum empirische Belege für eine direkte Verbindung zwischen Umweltkooperation und nachhaltigem Frieden. Diese Dissertation untersucht umweltbezogene Friedenskonsolidierung (engl. environmental peacebuilding) und vertieft das theoretische Verständnis des Phänomens durch eine systematische Übersicht des Forschungsstands sowie zwei empirische Fallstudien. Auf diese Weise trägt die vorliegende Arbeit zur dringend benötigten konzeptionellen Schärfung und gleichzeitig zu einem empirisch fundierten Verständnis von Environmental Peacebuilding bei. Die Dissertation ist kumulativ aufgebaut und besteht aus drei Forschungsarbeiten. Das erste Paper befasst sich mit den Bausteinen des Environmental Peacebuilding und nimmt eine Bestandsaufnahme des Phänomens vor. Es schlägt Wege und Möglichkeiten vor, wie der Fokus von Umweltkonflikten auf Umweltkooperation und Frieden verlagert werden kann. Die beiden Fallstudien basieren auf qualitativen Methoden und untersuchen, wie Environmental Peacebuilding in zwei unterschiedlichen Kontexten, dem Nahen Osten und Westafrika, abläuft. Mit diesen beiden Arbeiten leistet die Dissertation einen empirischen Beitrag zur Environmental-Peacebuilding-Forschung und schließt eklatante Forschungslücken insbesondere hinsichtlich der Rolle von lokalen Gemeinschaften und privaten Akteuren im Environmental Peacebuilding.
    Abstract: Despite their increasing prominence in both research and practice, the interlinkages between the biophysical environment and peacebuilding remain under-researched. While the literature identifies several mechanisms through which shared natural resources can function as catalysts for peace between conflicting parties, empirical evidence asserting a direct link between environmental cooperation and sustainable peace remains scarce. This dissertation examines environmental peacebuilding. It does so by providing a better theoretical understanding of the phenomenon through a literature review and two empirical case studies. In so doing, this dissertation provides much needed conceptual clarity as well as empirical evidence on environmental peacebuilding. This dissertation is cumulative and consists of three research papers. The first paper deals with the building blocks of environmental peacebuilding and takes stock of the phenomenon. It proposes a coherent framework through which focus can be shifted from environmental conflicts to environmental cooperation and peace thereby also adding to the ‘how’ of environmental peacebuilding. The two case studies are based on qualitative methods. They explore how environmental peacebuilding unrolls in two different contexts, the Middle East and West Africa. With these two papers, this dissertation contributes empirical evidence to the environmental peacebuilding literature and fills gaps in the research, especially concerning the role of local communities and private actors in environmental peacebuilding processes.

    Abstract: In dieser Dissertation wurde zur Untersuchung von Affekten und Emotionen als zentrales Phänomen im Sportunterricht ein Modell entwickelt, das das affektiv-emotionale Erleben im Sportunterricht aus Schülerinnen-Schüler-Perspektive als eigenständiges Phänomen betrachtet und in Bezug zu seinen Auslösern, Unterrichtsmaßnahmen und Konsequenzen setzt. Zur Beschreibung des affektiv-emotionalen Erlebens wurden Auslöser von Affekten und Emotionen in einer qualitativen Interviewstudie exploriert: Attraktivität der Aufgabe, Zugehörigkeit, Kompetenz und Autonomie erscheinen als entscheidende Auslöser des affektiv-emotionalen Erlebens aus Sicht der Schülerschaft. Daran anknüpfend wurden Kompetenz und Zugehörigkeit experimentell untersucht, um die Wirkung dieser Auslöser auf das affektiv-emotionale Erleben zu überprüfen. Eine positive bzw. negative Kompetenzbedingung führt zu einem positiven bzw. negativen Affekt und soziale Interaktion (Zugehörigkeitsbedingung) führt zu einem positiven Affekt bei den Schülerinnen und Schülern. Weiterführend wurden in einer systematischen Review Arbeit Unterrichtsmaßnahmen untersucht, die das affektiv-emotionale Erleben der Schülerinnen und Schüler im Sportunterricht effektiv beeinflussen können, indem sie die explorierten Auslöser anwenden. Dabei kann gezeigt werden: Autonomieunterstützende Unterrichtsmaßnahmen, die mit den identifizierten Auslösern zusammenhängen, können zu einem positiven affektiv-emotionalen Erleben bei den Schülerinnen und Schülern führen. Die identifizierten Auslöser des affektiv-emotionalen Erlebens und die effektiven Unterrichtsmaßnahmen werden in dieser Dissertation in ein heuristisches Modell zur Erklärung des affektiv-emotionalen Erlebens von Schülerinnen und Schülern im Sportunterricht integriert und hinsichtlich zukünftiger Forschungsansätze inhaltlich und methodisch diskutiert. Diese Dissertation schließt mit zukünftigen Forschungsfragen und praktischen Implikationen für die Bildungslandschaft.
    Abstract: This doctoral thesis focusses on affective and emotional states of students in the context of physical education (PE). Affects and emotions represent the theoretical framework. In order to investigate affects and emotions as a central phenomenon in PE, a model was developed that declares the affective and emotional states of students in PE to an independent phenomenon and relates this to its triggers, teaching styles and consequences. A qualitative interview study explored triggers of affects and emotions to describe the affective-emotional states: attractiveness of the task, belonging, competence, and autonomy appear to be decisive triggers of the affective-emotional states from the students' perspective. Based on this, competence and belonging were experimentally examined in order to successfully check the effect of these triggers on the affective and emotional states. A positive or negative trigger of competence influences students’ positive or negative affect and social interaction (belonging) influences students’ positive affect. In addition, teaching styles using the explored triggers were examined in a systematic review due to their influencing effects on the affective-emotional states of students in PE. It can be shown that autonomy-supportive teaching styles, which are related to the identified triggers, can positively influence the affective and emotional states of students. The identified triggers of the affective-emotional states and possible teaching styles are integrated into a heuristic model of affective-emotional states from students’ perspectives in PE. Based on this heuristic model, the contribution of this thesis will be critically reflected for further analysis of affective-emotional perception in future studies. Finally, the presented research is linked to future research questions. Practical implications are addressed for PE classes, schools, teacher training and general educational policy.
