    Abstract: This open access book studies how foreign models of economic development can be effectively learned by and applied to today’s latecomer countries. Policy capacity and societal learning are increasingly stressed as pre-conditions for successful catch-up. However, how such learning should be initiated by individual societies with different features needs to be explained. The book answers this pragmatic question from the perspective of Japan’s past experience and its extensive development cooperation in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Since the late nineteenth century, Japan has developed a unique philosophy and method for adopting advanced technologies and systems from the West; the same philosophy and method govern its current cooperation with the developing world. The key concepts are local learning and translative adaptation. Local learning says that development requires the learner to adopt a proactive mindset and the goal of graduating from receiving aid. Meanwhile, translative adaptation requires foreign models be modified to fit local realities given the different structures of the home and foreign society. The development process must be wholly owned by the domestic society in rejection of copy-and-paste acceptance. These ideas not only informed Japan but are key to successful development for all. The book also asks how this learning method should—or should not—be revised in the age of SDGs and digitalization. Following the overview section that lays out the general principles, the book offers many real cases from Japan and other countries. The concrete actions outlined in these cases, with close attention to individual growth “ingredients” as opposed to general theories, are crucial to successful policy making. The book contains materials that are highly useful for national leaders and practitioners within developing countries as well as students of development studies

    Abstract: This book examines how the COVID-19 pandemic has engendered a new and challenging environment in which borders drawn around people, places, and social structures have hardened and new ones have emerged. Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, borders closed or became unwelcoming at the international, national, sub-national, and local levels. Debate persists as to whether those countries and territories that tightly managed their borders, like New Zealand, Australia, or Hong Kong, got it ‘right’ compared to those that did not. Without doubt, a majority of those who suffered and died throughout the pandemic have been those from vulnerable populations. Yet on the other hand, efforts taken to manage the spread of the disease, such as through border management, have also disproportionately affected those who are most vulnerable. How then is the right balance to be struck, acknowledging, too, the economic and other imperatives that may dissuade governments from taking public health steps? This book considers how international organizations, countries, and institutions within those countries should conceive of, and manage, borders as the world continues to struggle with COVID-19 and prepares for the next pandemic. Engaging a range of international, and sub-national, examples, the book thematizes the main issues at stake in the control and management of borders in the interests of public health. This book will be of considerable interest to academics in the fields of health law, anthropology, economics, history, medicine, public health, and political science, as well as policymakers and public health planners at national and sub-national levels

But what is hidden behind the ideal? And what does the commitment look like when it is converted into text? This book highlights reportages by some of the 20th century’s most celebrated Swedish reporters and examines the ways in which their texts convey a commitment to the reader. The narratologically based analyses are performed against a background of changing ideas about a reporter’s role in society. It turns out that the commitment is often time-related and can be counteracted by generalizing values about the depicted people. Here, the difference between empathy and compassion becomes crucial. The selected reporters represent Swedish social reportage at central turning points within the tradition.     Abstract: This open access volume of LIDC contributions focuses on how competition and intellectual property laws incorporate sustainability objectives. Businesses are increasingly embracing sustainability objectives, driven by the international community. Although competition and intellectual property law are certainly not the only tools for addressing sustainability issues, they can play a role in moving toward a more sustainable society. Sustainability has gained prominence in competition law in all jurisdictions covered in this volume. The contributions focus on classic questions such as whether sustainability agreements restrict competition and, if so, to what extent businesses can be exempted on efficiency grounds. The papers also raise a number of questions, in particular concerning the treatment of non-market efficiencies. The soft law and case law produced by competition authorities are examined, and the leadership role of some competition authorities in the field – from advocacy to policy papers and sustainability guidelines – is highlighted. The authors call for more individual guidance to provide enhanced transparency and clarity to industry, advisors and society at large on sustainability issues, with guidelines or sustainability-related block exemptions providing even greater legal certainty. With regard to intellectual property, the contributions examine various important issues, such as the need for intellectual property rights to remain technology-neutral, ways to promote the use of sustainable technologies and incentives for licensing, and ways to promote the dissemination of sustainable technologies, including compulsory licensing, cross-licensing, open source or FRAND licensing, and replacing the destruction of counterfeit goods with recycling. The papers also discuss greenwashing and how it can be addressed through revisions to trademarks and related rights

    Abstract: This open access textbook introduces and defines digital humanism from a diverse range of disciplines. Following the 2019 Vienna Manifesto, the book calls for a digital humanism that describes, analyzes, and, most importantly, influences the complex interplay of technology and humankind, for a better society and life, fully respecting universal human rights. The book is organized in three parts: Part I “Background” provides the multidisciplinary background needed to understand digital humanism in its philosophical, cultural, technological, historical, social, and economic dimensions. The goal is to present the necessary knowledge upon which an effective interdisciplinary discourse on digital humanism can be founded. Part II “Digital Humanism – a System’s View” focuses on an in-depth presentation and discussion of the main digital humanism concerns arising in current digital systems. The goal of this part is to make readers aware and sensitive to these issues, including e.g. the control and autonomy of AI systems, privacy and security, and the role of governance. Part III “Critical and Societal Issues of Digital Systems” delves into critical societal issues raised by advances of digital technologies. While the public debate in the past has often focused on them separately, especially when they became visible through sensational events the aim here is to shed light on the entire landscape and show their interconnected relationships. This includes issues such as AI and ethics, fairness and bias, privacy and surveillance, platform power and democracy. This textbook is intended for students, teachers, and policy makers interested in digital humanism. It is designed for stand-alone and for complementary courses in computer science, or curricula in science, engineering, humanities and social sciences.     Abstract: Focusing on the processes of political socialisation and democratisation that took place in Spain during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this book brings together specialists who propose the need to rethink the contemporary history of democracy in Spain to build a new narrative. To do so, the authors go down to the local level, where they are able to trace a political culture that forged the foundations of a process of political ""modernization"" much more complex than what conventional historiography has conveyed, even though it was not always transferred institutionally to the national level. The book analyses the interaction between sociology and the main economic, political and social change in the country, including the 1910 Mexican Revolution, the main social movements, the role of the intellectual exiles from Spain and Latin America, and the participation of women, who have often remained invisible in the history of sociology. The book explores how sociological discourse played a fundamental role in the separation of secular and public education and the search for a ‘national project’ from 1868 onwards, despite the lack of an institute of social research until 1930; how sociology became an autonomous social science, led by a few intellectuals and public figures, as it became institutionalized in universities, and the effect this had on the development of the discipline; the influence of Marxism during the 1970s; and the progression from a process of specialization after the fall of the Berlin Wall to a new trend of working in collective projects with an increasing interdisciplinary perspective in the first decades of the 21st century

    Abstract: Public long-term care services represent an interesting illustration of a particular type of commitment on the part of the welfare state, mainly because such services tend to involve more binding forms of reciprocity than in most other services. This book explores the implications of this reality in further detail with the aim of providing a deeper insight into the welfare state as an emergent phenomenon and into what we conceptualize as a “welfare state experiment” – the case of Scandinavia. Our ambition is to advance a historical and multi-scalar analysis of this experiment by exploring how key tenets of the welfare state are changing in the light of neoliberalism and the contemporary crisis of social reproduction conceived of as a “care crisis”.     Abstract: This open access publication deals with the operationalisation of the welfare state as an independent variable. To study how welfare states affect social inequality, individual behaviour, attitudes and more in different countries, an empirical operationalisation of the welfare state or specific elements of social policy is required. However, this operationalisation is fraught with some important problems. These problems essentially relate to one point: while there are a large number of contributions dealing with the measurement of differences between welfare states per se and as a dependent variable, there is a lack of feasible recommendations for a standardised operationalisation of welfare stateness as an independent variable. So far, there has been no systematic investigation of how such different approaches may affect the results and their comparability. Also missing is an in-depth conceptual discussion of which features of the welfare state are particularly relevant for explaining certain effects. This book fills both gaps. First, it exposes the pitfalls of existing approaches and shows how much empirical results can vary depending on the operationalisation chosen. Second, it proposes a framework for a standardised conceptualisation and operationalisation of social policies as independent variables that constrains operational decisions in a theoretically meaningful way

    Abstract: Martin Weißmann legt in diesem Open-Access-Buch theoretische Synthesen zu zentralen Themen der interdisziplinären Polizeiforschung vor und leistet damit einen Beitrag zur Integration dieser ansonsten oft empiristischen Forschung in die stärker theorieorientierte Soziologie. Er schlägt vor, (Kriminal-)Polizeien als Fall misstrauischer Sozialsysteme zu analysieren. Wie beispielsweise auch Geheimdienste oder der Investigativjournalismus sind sie auf die Gewinnung von Informationen über eine Umwelt spezialisiert, welche dies durch Prozesse des Verbergens und Täuschens erschwert. Empirisch behandelt das Buch zunächst die (Vor-)Geschichte polizeilicher Ermittlungsarbeit in Europa als Fall der Ausdifferenzierung, Professionalisierung und Organisationswerdung sozialer Kontrolle (untersucht an den Fällen Englands im 18. Jahrhundert sowie der Kriminalpolizeien in Paris um 1820 und Berlin um 1920). Die anschließenden Kapitel widmen sich der Arbeit von Polizisten mit Informanten und an Beschuldigten (in der Vernehmung) als Fall des Kontakts einer organisationalen Grenzrolle mit formal nicht zur Kooperation verpflichteten Nichtmitgliedern der Organisation. Und schließlich analysiert der Autor den polizeilichen Korpsgeist als Fall einer kollegialen Versicherungsgemeinschaft gegen die individuelle Verantwortlichkeit für Fehler bei der Arbeit

Die Untersuchung baut auf Alfred Schütz‘ klassischem Aufsatz „Gemeinsam Musizieren“ auf und folgt der Frage, wie es Musiker:innen gelingt, mit Noten und Instrumenten gemeinsam zu musizieren und wie dies durch die Spielenden erlebt wird. Sie wird anhand von Streichensembles untersucht, die ohne Dirigierende musizieren. Durch die Integration von Videographie, fokussierter und lebensweltanalytischer Ethnographie wird der Blick keineswegs auf situatives Musizieren verengt, sondern die institutionelle und organisationale Ordnung des Forschungsfeldes systematisch integriert.     Abstract: The research that resulted in this book aimed to characterize the use of media in three elementary and secondary educational institutions in the cities of Cartago (Valle del Cauca), La Union (Nariño), Dosquebradas (Pereira), and Cartagena (Bolivar) through the construction of a knowledge map that would promote the exchange and articulated management of experiences and developments. The methodology used, integrated different ways of approaching the reality of educational dynamics and actors that generate educational-communicative and social processes to strengthen their training practices. In this line, each experience is consolidated in what are called Media Biographies, product of the experiences, events, times, and efforts each actor has deposited in these processes and that are articulated from different voices; the actors, the researcher when conducted the field work, and later the authors of this document. The research also illustrates a crucial period for educational history at the global level; the health emergency of COVID-19, which was integrated into the dynamics and expanded the ranges of analysis and personal and professional reflection, insofar two experiences were developed in this period, and managed to collect the emotions, the complexity, but also the dynamics to overcome the difficulties. The results show a map that presents different evolving coordinates of routes already established to qualify future inquiry exercises that become beacons on which educational institutions, teachers, and students can replicate, retake, or streamline these experiences and from there, contribute to the quality of education in the country
    Abstract: La investigación que dio como resultado este libro, tuvo como objetivo caracterizar el uso de medios de comunicación en tres instituciones educativas de básica y media en las ciudades de Cartago (Valle del Cauca), La Unión (Nariño), Dosquebradas (Pereira) y Cartagena (Bolívar), mediante la construcción de un mapa de conocimiento que fomentara el intercambio y la gestión articulada de experiencias y desarrollos. La metodología empleada, integró diversos modos de acercarse a la realidad de la dinámica educativa y de actores que generan procesos educomunicativos y sociales con el fin de fortalecer sus prácticas formativas. En esa línea, cada experiencia se consolida en lo que se denominan Biografías Mediáticas, producto de las experiencias, los eventos, los tiempos y los esfuerzos que cada actor ha depositado en estos procesos y que se articulan desde distintas voces, los actores, el investigador cuando desarrolló su trabajo de campo y posteriormente los autores de este documento. La investigación permite también ilustrar un periodo de tiempo crucial para la historia educativa a nivel global, que fue la emergencia sanitaria del COVID-19, lo cual fue integrado a la dinámica y que amplió los rangos de análisis y de reflexión personal y profesional, en tanto, dos experiencias se desarrollaron en este periodo y lograron recoger las emociones, la complejidad, pero también la dinámica para superar las dificultades. Los resultados dan cuenta de un mapa que presenta coordenadas diversas, evolutivas, de rutas ya definidas para cualificar futuros ejercicios de indagación que se convierten en faros sobre los cuales instituciones educativas, docentes y estudiantes pueden replicar, retomar o dinamizar estas experiencias y desde allí, contribuir a la calidad educativa en el país

    Abstract: Knowledge about horses and horse breeding is a cultural asset, which has evolved over centuries. At the same time, it is an essential economic commodity. The anthropological focus on knowledge of this study is on the current parameters of breeding the “Hannoveraner”, one of the world’s largest and also most popular horse breeds. The author conducts participatory observations on agricultural family farms that breed them and follows the development of individual horses from birth to successful athletes. The aim is to identify the genesis and exchange of the various stocks and forms of knowledge. The guiding questions of the analysis are: What is equine knowledge and how is it currently changing? Equine knowledge accumulates between breeders and horses and the diverse other actors and entities of this multispecies constellation in their shared everyday life. Videographic vignettes and photographs open up further access to the, primarily incorporated, knowledges and practices of horse breeding in agricultural environments, which are at the center of the ethnography

    Abstract: The objective of this research was to determine the level of relationship between perceptual skills and the learning of mathematics of 5-year-old children from an educational institution in Huancavelica, in remote education. The design used was correlational and the sample consisted of 46 students of 5 years of age from an early education institution in Huancavelica. The instruments used were the checklist for each variable with 30 items. The results show that there is a statistically significant relationship between perceptual skills and the learning of mathematics in 5-year-old students of an educational institution in Huancavelica, in remote education. These quantitative results, with an r=0.75, represent a moderate positive correlation, according to the table of correlation indexes of Hernandez, Fernandez and Baptista (2018)
    Abstract: La presente investigación tuvo como objetivo determinar el nivel de relación entre las habilidades perceptivas y el aprendizaje de la matemática de los niños y las niñas de 5 años de una Institución Educativa de Huancavelica, en la educación remota. El diseño empleado fue el correlacional y la muestra lo conformaron 46 estudiantes de 5 años de una institución de educación inicial de Huancavelica. Los instrumentos empleados fueron, la lista de cotejo para cada variable con 30 ítems. Los resultados evidencian que existe relación estadísticamente significativa entre las habilidades perceptivas y el aprendizaje de la matemática en los estudiantes de 5 años de una institución educativa de Huancavelica, en la educación remota. Estos resultados cuantitativos, con un r=0.75, representan una correlación positiva moderada, según el cuadro de índices de correlación de Hernández, Fernández y Baptista (2018)

    Abstract: This research book deals with the fact that the moments of reading improve reading comprehension in the literal, inferential and critical levels of the students of the second grade "E" of the advanced cycle of the CEBA "Politécnico Regional del Centro"- Huancayo, it is of quantitative nature, applied type, pre-experimental design, with pre-test and post-test in a single group, non-probabilistic sample. A pre-test was applied to diagnose their text comprehension, then an experimental proposal based on Isabel Solé's reading moments strategy and a post-test to determine the effects. It was statistically demonstrated that the application of this strategy significantly improves reading comprehension at the literal, inferential and critical levels. This is based on the fact that in the pre-test most students achieved scores below 10 (vigesimal scale); but in the post-test most of them surpassed this average in these levels. The calculation showed that there are significant differences between the pre-test and post-test scores of 6.6 points p 〈 0.05
    Abstract: Este libro de investigación trata sobre que los momentos de la lectura mejoran la comprensión lectora en los niveles literal, inferencial y crítico de los estudiantes del segundo grado “E” del ciclo avanzado del CEBA “Politécnico Regional del Centro”- Huancayo, es de naturaleza cuantitativa, tipo aplicada, diseño pre experimental, con pre test y pos test en un solo grupo, muestra no probabilística. Se aplicó un pre test para diagnosticar su comprensión de textos, luego una propuesta experimental basada en la estrategia los momentos de la lectura de Isabel Solé y un post test para determinar los efectos. Se demostró estadísticamente que la aplicación de esta estrategia permite mejorar significativamente la comprensión lectora en el nivel literal, inferencial y crítico. Esto se fundamenta porque en el pre test la mayoría de estudiantes alcanzó calificaciones inferiores a 10 (escala vigesimal); pero, en el post test la mayoría superó este promedio en estos niveles. En el calculó se evidenció que existen diferencias significativas entre las puntuaciones del pre y post test de 6,6 puntos p 〈 0,05

    Abstract: This Open access book provides a survey of the economic, health, and somatic progress of Baltic countries during the period 1918–2018, framed by the outline of the historical-sociological theory of modern social restorations, as originally conceived by the Austrian-American comparative historian Robert A. Kann. The author reworks Kann's theory to analyse post-communist transformations in the Baltic region. The book argues that the purpose of modern social restorations is to make restoration societies safe against a recurrence of revolution. There were two waves of modern social restorations: post-Napoleonic and post-communist. Most post-Napoleonic restorations were brief, because they failed to economically and socially outperform the pre-revolutionary and post-revolutionary systems. It considers Baltic restorations as laboratory cases of second-wave modern social restorations, because they encompass a triple restoration of the nation-state, capitalism, and democracy. The book assesses the performance success of Baltic restorations by comparing economic and social progress of Baltic countries during the periods of original independence (1918–1940), foreign-imposed state socialism (1940–1990), and restored independence (since 1990). It then elaborates the criteria to assess the ultimate performance success of these restorations by 2040, when restored Baltic states may endure longer than their ancestors in 1918–1940 and the complete foreign occupations era (1940–1990). The author, an expert in historical sociology, uses extensive historical-statistical data in cross-time comparisons to develop his analysis and create future projections.     Abstract: Seit dem Mord an George Floyd durch den Polizeieingriff in den Vereinigten Staaten im Mai 2020 und der daraus erwachsenen (Social Media-)Bewegung #blacklivesmatter hat auch die Beschäftigung mit den verschiedenen Formen von Rassismus in Deutschland zugenommen. Konnte der Begriff vor wenigen Jahren in wissenschaftlichen wie öffentlichen Diskursen weitgehend nur schwierig oder selten genutzt werden, hat er sich inzwischen hierzulande auch als Gegenbegriff zur globalen Wirkmächtigkeit rechter Ideologien, die besonders Identitätskategorien zur Legitimation mörderischer Gewalt heranziehen, sowie im Kontext globaler Diversifizierungsmaßnahmen im Diskursmainstream durchgesetzt. Dieser Erfolg des Begriffs lässt auch die filmischen Produktionen zu Themen von Menschenfeindlichkeit, die auf Repräsentationskategorien basieren, in einem neuen Licht erscheinen. Filme zu Themen des Rassismus versuchen, Aufklärungsarbeit im Sinne anti-rassistischer Praxis zu leisten, während beispielsweise propagandistische Videos rechter und dschihadistischer Kreise zur (re-)produktiven Verhandlung von Rassismus beitragen. Andererseits lassen sich Filme, die scheinbar nichts mit Rassismus zu tun haben, bei einem genaueren analytischen Blick sehr wohl als Verstärkungs-, Reproduktions- oder Verschleierungsakteure von Rassismen verstehen. So sind Filme immer schon im Sinne von (Un-)Sichtbarkeitsmaschinen dazu geeignet, soziale Verhältnisse zu veräußerlichen und so ungedachte Zusammenhänge zu denken. In dieser argumentativen Bi-Perspektivität – Sichtbarwerden der Rassismusdiskurse und Filme als Sichtbarkeitsmedien sozialer Verhältnisse – geht der vorliegende Sammelband Diskursformen des Rassismus, seiner Filmkulturen und Möglichkeiten des (anti-rassistischen) Widerstands besonders/aber nicht nur im deutschsprachigen Kontext nach.     Abstract: Klappentext: The volume collects the result of the project "Altägyptische Erzählungen in Texten und Bildern: Ägyptologische Perspektiven auf zentrale Axiome einer historischen Text- und Bildnarratologie". It presents a sound methodological perspective for an analysis of the medial diversity and the historical uniqueness of the Ancient Egyptian narrative culture at the interface of contemporary narratological theories and Egyptological practise. A methodological introduction by Gerald Moers and four case studies on categories of narrative artefacts as diverse as texts, images, and tombs argue in favour of appropriately adjusting narratological theories - instead of just using them - with respect to the historically specific differences of the Egyptian narrative behaviour. Based on a cognitive approach that defines human experience as generally framed in a narrative manner, the contributions define narrative as a phenomenon that is neither restricted to nor defined by one medium that would be considered paradigmatically narrative. The study by Camilla di Biase-Dyson on the Egyptian term s.Dd, which has so far been understood as to refer to linear verbal narrative, argues for a much more complex and sophisticated semantics of the term as defining a specifically Egyptian understanding of what narrative is. In a similar manner, the analysis of certain spells from the Pyramid Texts by Kristina Hutter and Dina Serova establishes the existence of narrative coherence in a genre of texts that has so far been considered as being non-narrative by definition. The study of Claus Jurman on Old Kingdom tombs shows that their integrated compilation of texts, images, statuary, and architecture results in non-linear but complex multimodal narratives. Gerald Moers, in his analysis of exemplary genre-scenes from Ramesside ostraca, shows that even some so-called monochronic images that depict precisely one moment in time and have thus traditionally been said to be a-temporal and non-narrative by definition, often have a clearly structured temporal program and can thus be considered autonomous narratives.

Our original research reveals when, how and why political rulers decide to build effective state agencies and enable them to deliver certain forms of economic development – often through forming strategic coalitions with senior bureaucrats and with international support – and also when this support falters and gives way to a politics of survival. Comparative analysis identifies two potential trajectories towards state-building in Africa, each shaped by different configurations of social and political power. The book critiques the role that international development agencies have played in (mis)shaping the state in Africa and suggests a new strategic agenda for building the state capacities required to deliver sustained development at the current juncture. The book closes with critical commentaries from two leading scholars in the field, to help place our work in context and establish the next steps for research and strategy in this increasingly important area of development theory and practice

    Abstract: The Capital District, as a territorial entity located in the center of the Bogota Savanna, has the political and administrative responsibility to lead environmental sustainability and articulate with the Corporación Autónoma Regional de Cundinamarca (CAR) in order to preserve the ecological structure of the territory and promote sustainable land uses (urban and rural). To this end, there is a set of administrative tools and instruments contemplated in the Land Use Plan (POT) of the Capital District that all citizens should know and use to protect the ecosystems of the savanna of Bogota and the human rights associated with environmental sustainability. The objective of this publication is to contribute to the dissemination of these tools, through conceptualization and synthesis of relevant legal information on the subject. To achieve this purpose, this book is structured in two parts, the first one presents a theoretical contextualization and history of land use planning in Bogota and the second part presents the main concepts of the main ecological structure following the articles of the POT of Bogota - District Decree 555 of 2021

    Abstract: The purpose of this book is to showcase a diverse set of directions in empirical research on mediated discourse, reflecting on the state-of-the-art and the increasing intersection between Corpus-based Interpreting Studies (CBIS) and Corpus-based Translation Studies (CBTS). Undeniably, data from the European Parliament (EP) offer a great opportunity for such research. Not only does the institution provide a sizeable sample of oral debates held at the EP together with their simultaneous interpretations into all languages of the European Union. It also makes available written verbatim reports of the original speeches, which used to be translated. From a methodological perspective, EP materials thus guarantee a great degree of homogeneity, which is particularly valuable in corpus studies, where data comparability is frequently a challenge. In this volume, progress is visible in both CBIS and CBTS. In interpreting, it manifests itself notably in the availability of comprehensive transcription, annotation and alignment systems. In translation, datasets are becoming substantially richer in metadata, which allow for increasingly refined multi-factorial analysis. At the crossroads between the two fields, intermodal investigations bring to the fore what these mediation modes have in common and how they differ. The volume is thus aimed in particular at Interpreting and Translation scholars looking for new descriptive insights and methodological approaches in the investigation of mediated discourse, but it may be also of interest for (corpus) linguists analysing parliamentary discourse in general

The aim of this handbook is to fill this gap by exploring ways to analyse and model data for policy support, and to advocate the adoption of CSS solutions for policy by raising awareness of existing implementations of CSS in policy-relevant fields. To this end, the book explores applications of computational methods and approaches like big data, machine learning, statistical learning, sentiment analysis, text mining, systems modelling, and network analysis to different problems in the social sciences. The book is structured into three Parts: the first chapters on foundational issues open with an exposition and description of key policymaking areas where CSS can provide insights and information. In detail, the chapters cover public policy, governance, data justice and other ethical issues. Part two consists of chapters on methodological aspects dealing with issues such as the modelling of complexity, natural language processing, validity and lack of data, and innovation in official statistics. Finally, Part three describes the application of computational methods, challenges and opportunities in various social science areas, including economics, sociology, demography, migration, climate change, epidemiology, geography, and disaster management. The target audience of the book spans from the scientific community engaged in CSS research to policymakers interested in evidence-informed policy interventions, but also includes private companies holding data that can be used to study social sciences and are interested in achieving a policy impact
