    Abstract: Eine Besonderheit der spanischen Kolonialherrschaft ist das explizite Verbot für »Ausländer«, nach Amerika zu reisen oder sich dort anzusiedeln. Dennoch lebten viele Immigranten englischer, portugiesischer, italienischer oder französischer Herkunft in den hispano-amerikanischen Kolonien. Diese »extranjeros«, deren Ausweisung zwar oft angeordnet, aber selten praktiziert wurde, stehen im Zentrum der Studie. Martin Biersack geht dem widersprüchlichen und oft spannungsreichen Verhältnis von »Spaniern« und »Ausländern«, Norm und Praxis, Duldung und Ausweisung nach und kann so erklären, wie und warum die Integration nichtspanischer Immigranten in die vormoderne koloniale Gesellschaft gelang, obwohl sie formal von dieser ausgeschlossen waren.

Der Soziologe Thomas Faist bringt Licht ins Dunkel – und räumt mit einigen grassierenden Mythen zur globalen Migration im 21. Jahrhundert auf. Der Begriff «Exit» bezeichnet die Entscheidung, die eigene Heimat zu verlassen, weil es dort schlichtweg keine Perspektiven mehr gibt. Sie ist zum politischen Massenphänomen unserer Zeit und vor allem im globalen Süden zu einer Alternative zum sozialen Protest geworden. Die massenhafte Abwanderung aus verarmten Regionen etwa auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent verschärft sich nicht zuletzt infolge des Klimawandels, der den globalen Süden ungleich härter trifft als den globalen Norden. Dadurch entstehen sowohl in den Immigrations- als auch in den Emigrationsländern neue politische Konfliktkonstellationen. Die Fragmentierung der europäischen Parteienlandschaft etwa wäre ohne die neuen Formen globaler Migration im 21. Jahrhundert undenkbar. Auf der anderen Seite wird die weltweite soziale Ungleichheit, die Schere zwischen Nord und Süd, durch immer rigidere Migrationsregime zementiert statt abgemildert. Es bedarf folglich einer neuen, fairen Migrationspolitik, um den Exit im globalen Süden in eine für alle Beteiligten gewinnbringende Mobilität zulenken. Thomas Faist, einer der führenden Migrationsexperten in Europa, legt in seinem Buch die Summe seiner Forschung zum Thema vor.

    Abstract: "Climate Changed is an honest and humane account about the rapid downsizing of the world's natural resources and the consequences this has for millions of people who, year after year, are displaced from their home countries because of politically-instigated and economically-justified war and conflict. Based on interviews with 110 refugees who arrived into Europe from 2015 to 2018 and observations of refugee camps, border crossings, inner-city slums, social housing projects, NGO and related refugee associations, it offers a moving insight into the refugee experience of leaving home, crossing borders and settling in Europe and sets this against the geo-political and commercial enterprise that dismantled their countries in the international chase for wilting quantities of the world's natural resources. Yet at every point of their journey to their new lives and in the resettlement process, the refugees are on the end of more perpetual victimisation and exploitation as there is always money to be made from them. Even if their labour is in demand, all this is further exacerbated by a European social climate of intolerance and stigma which jeopardises integration and counters their wellbeing and safety. The climate has changed. Students, lecturers and professors and other similar academic workers, policymakers, various practitioners, and voluntary workers within the sector of refugee frontlines as well as aid workers, town planners and welfare support staff would find relevance in this book"

    Abstract: "This book explores the multiform and shifting locations of borders and boundaries in social life, related to difference and belonging. It contributes to understanding categories of difference as a building block for forms of belonging and inequality in the world today and as underpinning modern capitalist societies and their forms of governance. Reflecting on the ways in which we might theorise the connections between different social divisions and identities, a translocational lens for addressing modalities of power is developed, stressing relationality, the spatio-temporal and the processual in social relations. The book is organised around contemporary dilemmas of difference and inequality, relating to fixities and fluidities in social life and to current developments in the areas of racialisation, migration, gender, sexuality and class relations, and in theorising the articulations of gender, class and ethnic hierarchies. Rejecting the view that gender, ethnicity, race, class or the more specific categories of migrants or refugees pertain to social groups with certain fixed characteristics, they are treated as interconnected and interdependent places within a landscape of inequality making. This innovative and groundbreaking book constitutes a significant contribution to scholarship on intersectionality"--

    Abstract: Despite labour shortages and rapidly shrinking working-age populations, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan shared restrictive immigration policies and exclusionary practices toward immigrants until the early 2000s. While Taiwan maintained this trajectory, Japan took incremental steps to expand immigrant services at the grassroots level, and South Korea enacted sweeping immigration reforms. How did convergent policies generate these divergent patterns of immigrant incorporation? Departing from the dominant scholarship that focuses on culture, domestic political elites, and international norms, this book shows the important role of civil society actors - including immigrants themselves - in giving voice to immigrant interests, mobilizing immigrant actors, and shaping public debate and policy on immigration. Based on more than 150 in-depth interviews and focus groups with over twenty immigrant communities, Immigrant Incorporation in East Asian Democracies examines how the civic legacies of past struggles for democracy shape current movements for immigrant rights and recognition.

    Abstract: Do migrants lead to an increase of crime rates in their host societies? This highly contentious issue has become a mainstay in the political debate and a lightning rod for the galvanization of populist movements, despite often lacking any empirical support. In this game-changing book, the authors examine what the existing data actually says, and provide their own novel evidence on the immigration-crime connection. Taking the unusual approach of analysing the subject from an economic perspective, the authors build on the pioneering work of Nobel Prize winner Gary Becker to construct their innovative arguments. By considering evidence from different countries, with a focus on establishing causal relationships, the authors are able to analyse not only if migrants do cause crime but also whether migration policies can play a role in shaping incentives for migrants to engage in crime. This book will appeal to students and academics across the social sciences, as well as citizens interested in this topical issue.

    Abstract: In this ground-breaking work, Gerasimos Tsourapas examines how migration and political power are inextricably linked, and enhances our understanding of how authoritarian regimes rely on labour emigration across the Middle East and the Global South. Dr Tsourapas identifies how autocracies develop strategies to tie cross-border mobility to their own survival, highlighting domestic political struggles and the shifting regional and international landscape. In Egypt, the ruling elite has long shaped labour emigration policy in accordance with internal and external tactics aimed at regime survival. Dr Tsourapas draws on a wealth of previously-unavailable archival sources in Arabic and English, as well as extensive original interviews with Egyptian elites and policy-makers in order to produce a novel account of authoritarian politics in the Arab world. The book offers a new insight into the evolution and political rationale behind regime strategies towards migration, from Gamal Abdel Nasser's 1952 Revolution to the 2011 Arab Uprisings

    Abstract: This volume explores religious discourses and practices of hospitality in the context of migration. It articulates the implied ambivalences and even contradictions as well as the potential to contribute to a more just world through social interconnection with others. Their essays reveal a dichotomy of hospitality between guest and host, while tackling the meaning of home or the loss of it, interrogating both the peril and promise of the relationship between religion, chiefly Christianity, and hospitality, and focusing on the role of migrants’ vulnerability and agency, by drawing from empirical, theological, sociological and anthropological insights emerged from postcolonial migration contexts. With contributions by Andrea Bieler, Jione Havea, Claudia Hoffmann, HyeRan Kim-Cragg, Claudia Jahnel, Isolde Karle, Buhle Mpofu, Armin Nassehi, Ilona Nord, Henrietta Nyamnjoh, Regina Polak, Ludger Pries, Thomas Reynolds, Harsha Walia, Jula Well, and Birgit Weyel. [Religion und Migration] Dieser Band beschäftigt sich mit religiösen Diskursen und religiöser Praxis, die Gastfreundschaft im Kontext von Migration thematisieren.     Abstract: What are we talking about when we talk about migration? At this point, the overheated debate about migration flows lacks the necessary calm to leave the state of outrage. This step is necessary, however, in order to develop sustainable practical solutions. Successful communication as a prerequisite is the centerpiece of this endeavour. For this reason, this book focuses on various aspects of the facts of migration, in order to understand the situation as it stands, as well as the conditions needed for promising future pathways - both in terms of theoretical reflection and practical application

Der überhitzten Debatte über Migrantenströme fehlt inzwischen die notwendige Gelassenheit, um aus dem Empörungsmodus herauszutreten. Das ist aber notwendig, um zukunftsfähige Lösungen für die Praxis zu erarbeiten. Gelungene Kommunikation als Vorbedingung nimmt dabei eine zentrale Position ein. Dieser Band setzt deshalb den Fokus auf unterschiedliche Aspekte des Faktums Migration, um sowohl den Status quo als auch die Bedingungen für erfolgversprechende Wege in die Zukunft auszuloten - sowohl in der theoretischen Reflexion als auch in der praktischen Anwendung

    Abstract: Deutsche Migranten in Argentinien: Ein historischer Beitrag zur Migrationsdebatte. Deutsche, österreichische und schweizer Einwanderer bildeten eine heterogene Gemeinde im Herzen der Metropole Buenos Aires. Sie entwickelten eine gemeinsame Erinnerungskultur, die ihnen Orientierung und Identität gab. Welche Charakteristika hatte diese Erinnerungskultur? Welche geschichtswissenschaftlichen Erklärungen gibt es für deren Herausbildung? Welche Erkenntnisse bringt uns dieser historische Fall für das Verständnis von Migration und Erinnerung in multiethnischen Gesellschaften in einer globalisierten Welt? Die Autorin zeigt, wie Aneignung und Abgrenzung von Geschichtsbildern in der Migrantengemeinde abliefen, die Entwicklung einer Meistererzählung und das Scheitern von geschichtspolitischen Projekten. Trotz vieler Bezüge zu den Herkunftsländern der Einwanderer war ihre Erinnerungskultur sehr stark von den Gegebenheiten in Argentinien, den Bedingungen vor Ort und der Zusammensetzung ihrer heterogenen Gemeinde abhängig.

Der Alltag illegalisierter Migrant*innen ist durch Entrechtungen geprägt.Holger Wilcke zeigt, dass papierlose Migrant*innen dennoch nicht als passive Opfer missverstanden werden sollten, sondern vielmehr über Handlungsmacht verfügen: Sie arbeiten ohne Arbeitserlaubnis, sie organisieren sich Wohnraum, obwohl sie offiziell keinen Mietvertrag unterschreiben können, und sie verschaffen sich ohne Krankenversicherung Zugang zu medizinischer Versorgung. Als politische Subjekte nehmen sie sich - oft unwahrnehmbar - Rechte, die ihnen formal nicht zustehen, und transformieren unentwegt die Gesellschaft, welche ihre Ausschlüsse produziert.

    Abstract: How do young people from immigrant families become engaged in politics? Anja Schmidt-Kleinert examines the case of young Israelis who are actively engaged with the nationalist Yisra'el Beitenu party, led by the Israeli minister of defence, Avigdor Lieberman. She explores how the activists present Israeli citizenship in a way that is exclusionary to non-Jewish citizens and analyses their strategy to actively construct a sense of belonging to Israeli society or, more precisely, to the Jewish collective by using the ethno-nationalist public discourse.

    Abstract: "In many countries in Western Europe, the demand for immigrant integration has inevitably raised questions about the "societies" into which immigrants are asked to integrate. Imagined Societies critically intervenes in debates on immigrant integration and multiculturalism in Western Europe. Schinkel argues that the term "multiculturalism" is not used primarily to describe a type of policy or political philosophy in countries such as the Netherlands, France, Germany or Belgium, but rather as a rhetorical device that promotes demands for "integration". He analyses how such demands are ways of imagining the very idea of a "host society" as "modern", "secular" and "enlightened". Starting from debates in social theory on social imaginaries, and drawing on public debates on citizenship, secularism and sexuality, and on the social science of measuring immigrant integration, this book presents a highly original study of immigrant integration that challenges our understanding of the concept of society"...

    Abstract: This book examines the formation of colonial social identities inside the institutions for the insane in Australia and New Zealand. Taking a large sample of patient records, it pays particular attention to gender, ethnicity and class as categories of analysis, reminding us of the varied journeys of immigrants to the colonies and of how and where they stopped, for different reasons, inside the social institutions of the period. It is about their stories of mobility, how these were told and produced inside institutions for the insane, and how, in the telling, colonial identities were asserted and formed. Having engaged with the structural imperatives of empire and with the varied imperial meanings of gender, sexuality and medicine, historians have considered the movements of travellers, migrants, military bodies and medical personnel, and ‘transnational lives’. This book examines an empire-wide discourse of ‘madness’ as part of this inquiry

Im Gegenteil: Sowohl nationale Minderheiten als auch Einwandererminderheiten befinden sich nach wie vor in einem Dilemma zwischen Selbstbestimmung und Integration. Der Band umfasst vier Themenbereiche: Im ersten Teil sollen theoretische Aspekte der Multikulturalismusdebatte aufgezeigt werden, um anschließend im zweiten Teil allgemeine Migrations- und Integrationsaspekte von Einwandererminderheiten zu veranschaulichen. Im dritten und vierten Teil illustrieren einige Minderheitenbeispiele in Ost- und Westeuropa die Problematik ausschnitthaft und ermöglichen verschiedene Perspektiven auf die Auseinandersetzung zwischen Integration und Selbstbestimmung. Dr. phil. Karin B. Schnebel ist Lehrkraft für besondere Aufgaben am Lehrstuhl für Politikwissenschaft an der Universität Passau sowie Lehrbeauftragte am Geschwister-Scholl-Institut der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München und der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt a.M.

    Abstract: Deutschland ist wie seine europäischen Nachbarländer zu einem Einwanderungsland geworden. In Deutschland leben heute Menschen aus 190 Nationen zusammen. Es sind Fragen von Flucht, Migration und Integration, die die politische Bildungsarbeit maßgeblich beschäftigen. Integration geschieht nicht von selbst – sie ist vielmehr eine Aufgabe, die im Hinblick auf eine zukunftsfähige Gesellschaft gestaltet werden muss. Die hier gesammelten Beiträge der Tagung Einwanderungsland Deutschland. Wie kann Integration aus ethnologischer Sicht gelingen? greifen Fragen des Zusammenlebens von Menschen unterschiedlicher Ethnien, Kulturen, Religionen und Nationen auf und suchen in dieser gesellschaftspolitischen Debatte bei der Diskussion um die komplexen Fragestellungen von Migration und Integration stets den interdisziplinären Zugang. Ziel der Tagung war es, ein Forum für eine Diskussion zwischen Theorie und Praxis zu bieten, um so gemeinsam zu erörtern, wie Integration gelingen kann. Thematisiert werden Schlagwörter wie Inklusion, Migrationsforschung und Kultur, zudem werden Zusammenhänge zwischen Religion, Bildung sowie Medien und Integration untersucht. Des Weiteren werden Ergebnisse ethnologischer Forschungen präsentiert, um Impulse für eine erfolgreiche Integration zu geben. Abgerundet wird dieser Band mit der Vorstellung von ethnologischen Projekten, die bereits einen Beitrag zur Integration leisten.     Abstract: Deutschland ist wie seine europäischen Nachbarländer zu einem Einwanderungsland geworden. In Deutschland leben heute Menschen aus 190 Nationen zusammen. Es sind Fragen von Flucht, Migration und Integration, die die politische Bildungsarbeit maßgeblich beschäftigen. Integration geschieht nicht von selbst - sie ist vielmehr eine Aufgabe, die im Hinblick auf eine zukunftsfähige Gesellschaft gestaltet werden muss. Die hier gesammelten Beiträge der Tagung Einwanderungsland Deutschland. Wie kann Integration aus ethnologischer Sicht gelingen? greifen Fragen des Zusammenlebens von Menschen unterschiedlicher Ethnien, Kulturen, Religionen und Nationen auf und suchen in dieser gesellschaftspolitischen Debatte bei der Diskussion um die komplexen Fragestellungen von Migration und Integration stets den interdisziplinären Zugang. Ziel der Tagung war es, ein Forum für eine Diskussion zwischen Theorie und Praxis zu bieten, um so gemeinsam zu erörtern, wie Integration gelingen kann. Thematisiert werden Schlagwörter wie Inklusion, Migrationsforschung und Kultur, zudem werden Zusammenhänge zwischen Religion, Bildung sowie Medien und Integration untersucht.     Abstract: Migranten und ihre Familien bilden heute in allen Bereichen der Sozialen Arbeit eine wichtige Adressatengruppe. Soziale Arbeit hat zunehmend damit zu tun, ein Gegengewicht zur sozialen und ethischen Segregation von Zuwanderern zu bilden, Migrationsrisiken abzufedern und zur Bewältigung von Integrationsprozessen beizutragen. Vor allem die psychosoziale Beratung bildet dabei ein Praxisfeld von wachsender Bedeutung. Der erste Teil des Buches beantwortet Fragen nach den sozialen, kulturellen, aber auch psychischen Besonderheiten dieser Klientel der Sozialarbeit. Der zweite Teil behandelt bewährte Methoden in der Beratung von Migranten auf der Basis interkultureller Kompetenzen und eines kultursensiblen Vorgehens.

    Abstract: Bilder und Vorstellungen von deutschen Städten und Landschaften haben sich durch persönliche Erfahrungen, gewachsene Traditionen und nicht zuletzt durch mediale Reproduktionen tief in unser kulturelles Gedächtnis eingraviert. Mit Darstellungen von Dirndl, Maßkrug und Weißwurst nimmt Bayern hier, gewissermaßen als Vorreiter des Typischen, eine besondere Rolle ein. Doch wie wirkt der stereotyp aufgeladene Raum des Freistaats auf Besucher abseits der Touristengruppen? Um das Spektrum der verschiedenen Perspektiven auszuleuchten, hat eine Projektgruppe von Studierenden der Vergleichenden Kulturwissenschaft in Regensburg die Wahrnehmungen derer untersucht, die aus dem nahen Ausland oder aus fernen Welten Asiens und Afrikas als Migranten nach Bayern gekommen sind. Auf diese Weise versteht sich der Sammelband 'Fremde Nähe' als Baustein zu einer breiten Integrationsdebatte wie auch als Element kulturwissenschaftlicher Migrationsforschung.
