    Abstract: Sabine Exner-Krikorian untersucht in dieser Studie den Diskurs über die gleichgeschlechtliche Ehe in Deutschland von 1998 bis 2017. Sie geht der Frage nach, wie zeitgenössische religiöse, politische und gesellschaftliche Akteur*innen um die Deutungshoheit von Ehe wetteifern. Im Detail wird gezeigt, dass die Diskursakteur*innen in diesem Aushandlungsprozess die Prämisse einer angenommenen Moderne, die Dichotomie religiös/säkular sowie Narrative von und über Religion(en) als diskursive Strategien einsetzen. Eingebettet ist die Analyse in eine historische Rekonstruktion der Ehe seit der Reformation als Deutungs- und Machtkampf politischer und religiöser Akteur*innen. Mit einem zeit-, akteurs- und arenaspezifischen Ansatz verknüpft die Autorin methodologisch die Wissenssoziologische Diskursanalyse (WDA) nach Reiner Keller mit einem religionswissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisinteresse.

    Abstract: Die Sichtbarkeit der globalen »Boykott, Desinvestitionen und Sanktionen«-Kampagne (BDS) gegen Israel nimmt weltweit zu. Unter Berufung auf die universalen Menschenrechte fordern BDS-Akteure einen umfassenden Boykott des jüdischen Staats. Gleichzeitig wird die Bewegung oft als antisemitisch klassifiziert, was zu der Frage führt: Können Antisemitismen auch im Namen der Menschenrechte formuliert werden? Natascha Müller nimmt sich diesem Komplex an und untersucht, wie »menschenrechtsorientierte Antisemitismen« weltweit für den BDS-Diskurs mobilisieren. Durch die Entwicklung eines innovativen Theoriemodells gelingt ihr eine differenzierte Beurteilung der BDS-Akteur*innen und ihrer Forderungen

    Abstract: This comparative and multi-level study of state responses is confronted with huge complexity. Almost all existing theoretical and methodological approaches -such as secularism (including multiple secularisms or post-secularism)- do not take these complexities seriously into account, focusing on one concept only (wrong Leitdifferenz). They neglect different meanings of terms for agents in the field and they neglect the importance of different levels of governance, times, issues and minorities. This study, however, highlights minimally necessary complexity without drowning in this complexity. It draws clear conceptual, theoretical and methodological lessons, also in a broader sense for the study of governance of religious and cultural diversity and for the governance of migrations.     Abstract: "Der Islam – gehört er nun zu Deutschland oder nicht? Spätestens seit dem Ausspruch Christian Wulffs wird dies hierzulande kontrovers diskutiert. Hanna Josua zeichnet die aktuelle Debatte vor dem Hintergrund zunehmender Migration aus islamischen Ländern nach, lässt unterschiedliche Stimmen zu Wort kommen und weicht unangenehmen Fragen nicht aus. Doch ebenso, wie es nicht „den“ Islam und „die“ Muslime gibt, kann es auf die Ausgangsfrage kein simples „Ja“ oder „Nein“ geben. Muslime und Nichtmuslime müssen sich noch in vielen Fragen aufeinander zu bewegen und gemeinsam entscheiden, welcher Islam in Deutschland eine Zukunft haben kann. Grenzen der Toleranz müssen benannt, Gemeinsamkeiten erkannt und genutzt werden, um ein friedliches Zusammenleben in einer unfriedlichen Welt zu fördern. Als säkulare Muslimin will Lale Akgün auch andere darin bestärken, sich vom konservativen Gebots-Islam der Funktionäre zu emanzipieren. Indem sie sich – gemäß der Grundsätze der Aufklärung – ihres eigenen Verstandes bedient, kommt sie zu einer zeitgemäßen Interpretation des Islams, die nicht mit individueller Freiheit und Gleichberechtigung kollidiert. Sie beschreibt die Gesichter des politischen Islams und Mechanismen, die dazu führen, dass orthodoxe Strömungen ihren Einfluss ausweiten. Sie reflektiert gesellschaftliche Rahmenbedingungen, die einen liberalen Islam begünstigen würden, und fordert einen säkularen Staat, in dem alle Religionen ihren Platz haben und gleichberechtigt behandelt werden, aber nicht das öffentliche Leben bestimmen können.     Abstract: Verlagsinfo: Weil der König das Land finanziell aussaugt, lebt zwei Drittel der Bevölkerung in Armut. Wie die Menschen ihre Lage meistern, beschreibt dieser keine Band. Swasiland ist die letzte absolute Monarchie auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent. Das an sich wäre noch kein Problem, würde der amtierende König Mswati III. das Land nicht als sein Privateigentum ansehen, es finanziell aussaugen, Menschenrechte mit Füßen treten und jeden Versuch, mehr demokratische Rechte einzufordern, mit Gewalt niederschlagen würde. Im Bericht von Amnesty International 2017-2018 über die menschenrechtliche Situation in Swasiland werden neben Zwangsräumungen ohne Kompensation, besonders die Restriktionen der Versammlungsfreiheit, die willkürlichen Verhaftungen unter dem Terrorismusgesetz sowie die fehlende Implementierung von Gesetzen gegen sexuelle Gewalt angeprangert. Kaum etwas ist davon ist in deutschen Medien zu lesen, zu hören oder zu sehen. In diesem Buch beschreiben Autorinnen und Autoren aus Europa und Afrika, die Mitglieder im 2017 gegründeten Swasiland-Netzwerkes sind, verschiedene Aspekte der Situation in dem kleinen Land im südlichen Afrika.

    Abstract: Since the elections of 2002, Erdogan's AKP has dominated the political scene in Turkey. This period has often been understood as a break from a 'secular' pattern of state-building. But in this book, Ceren Lord shows how Islamist mobilisation in Turkey has been facilitated from within the state by institutions established during early nation-building. Lord thus challenges the traditional account of Islamist AKP's rise that sees it either as a grassroots reaction to the authoritarian secularism of the state or as a function of the state's utilisation of religion. Tracing struggles within the state, Lord also shows how the state's principal religious authority, the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) competed with other state institutions to pursue Islamisation. Through privileging Sunni Muslim access to state resources to the exclusion of others, the Diyanet has been a key actor ensuring persistence and increasing salience of religious markers in political and economic competition, creating an amenable environment for Islamist mobilisation.

Matthew Walton draws extensively on Burmese language sources from the last 150 years to describe the 'moral universe' of contemporary Theravada Buddhism that has anchored most political thought in Myanmar. In explaining multiple Burmese understandings of notions such as 'democracy' and 'political participation', the book provides readers with a conceptual framework for understanding some of the key dynamics of Myanmar's ongoing political transition.     Abstract: "Through the creation of post-colonial citizenship, India adopted a hybridisation of specific secular and western conception of citizenship. In this democratic framework, Indian Muslims are observed on how they make use of the spaces and channels to accommodate their Islamic identity within a secular one. This book analyses how the socio-political context shapes citizens' perceptions of multiple variables, such as their sense of political efficacy, agency, conception of citizenship rights and belief in democracy. Based on extensive surveys and interviews and through presenting and investigating the various meanings of jihād, the author explores the usage of non-Eurocentric conceptual approaches to the study of postcolonial and Muslim societies, in particular the meaning it carries in the psyche of the Muslim community. She argues that through means of argumentative and spiritual jihād, Indian Muslims fight their battle towards a realisation of citizenship ideals despite the unfavourable conditions of intra and inter community conflicts. Presenting new examinations of Islamic identity and citizenship in contemporary India, this book will be a useful contribution to the study of South Asian Studies, Religion, Islam, and Race and Ethnicity"...Provided by publisher

    Abstract: The Gulen, or Hizmet, movement in Turkey is the country's most powerful and affluent religious organisation. Its central tenet, advanced by its founder, the charismatic Sunni preacher Fethullah Gulen (b. 1941), is that Muslims should engage positively with modernity. A prime means of advancing this philosophy has been education: at hundreds of Gulen-run schools and universities, not only in Turkey but also worldwide, instructors aim to cultivate the next generation of Muslim bankers, biologists, software engineers and politicians. But how does the Gulen movement resolve the sometimes conflicting positions of Sunni Islam and contemporary science for example, on evolutionary theory? Drawing on sustained ethnographic research conducted among Gulen communities in Turkey, Caroline Tee analyses their complex attitudes towards secular modernity. She focuses on education, science research and industry to explore how pious Muslim practitioners engage in science at high levels, arguing that the Gulen movement's success in this critical area of modernity has facilitated its rise to prominence in recent decades. Considered against the backdrop of Turkish politics, and particularly the acrimonious power-struggle between the Gulen movement and its erstwhile ally, Turkey's ruling AK Party, Gulenist engagement with modern science is revealed as a key source of its influence and success

Considering both Sufi- and Salafi-oriented movements in their respective historical contexts, it stresses the importance of the local context to explain the different trajectories of development. Against the background of a general inquiry into what constitutes 'reform', the text responds to the question of what 'reform' actually means for Muslims in contemporary Africa

    Abstract: "This volume highlights the ways in which the prospect of peace can generate anxieties and consequently set in motion social and political processes that reproduce and reactivate conflicts. In analysing this issue, the volume builds on the notion of ontological security and its recent applications to international relations theory. Although conflicts threaten the physical security of the parties involved, they also help settle existential questions about basic parameters of life, being, and identity, and thus over time become sources of ontological security. The prospect of peace, through the resolution or transformation of conflict, threatens to unsettle the stability and consistency of self-narratives, and their associated routines and habits at the individual, group, and state levels.The contributors argue two key points: 1) that ontological insecurity may set in motion political and social processes that reproduce and reactivate conflicts; 2) that coping with peace anxieties necessitates the formulation of alternative self-narratives at the individual, societal, and state levels that re-situate the Self in relation to Other and to the world at large. Consequently, the book analyses the ways in which, and the conditions under which, conflict resolution induces ontological insecurity, and the different ways in which ontological insecurity has prevented the successful culmination of peace processes in different conflict contexts, including Cyprus, Israel-Palestine and Northern Ireland. This book will be of much interest to students of critical security studies, conflict resolution, peace and conflict studies, social theory and IR in general"..

    Abstract: Making sense of Saudi Arabia is crucially important today. The kingdom's western province contains the heart of Islam, and it is the United States' closest Arab ally and the largest producer of oil in the world.     Abstract: In den gesellschaftlichen und politischen Diskussionen wird oft eine direkte Beziehung zwischen Religion und Gewalt erörtert, die darauf zielt, die Religion schlechthin als Ursache der Gewaltbereitschaft anzuprangern. Die Quellen der monotheistischen Religionen Judentum, Christentum und Islam beinhalten ein Gewaltpotenzial, das im Laufe der Geschichte immer wieder von ihren Anhängern instrumentalisiert wurde. Diese Quellen können wir verstehen, wenn wir an ihre Aussagen nicht mit unserer heutigen Denkweise herangehen, sondern versuchen, sie aus der Perspektive ihrer Entstehungzeit zu erfassen. In diesem Buch haben sich christliche und muslimische Theologinnen und Theologen dem Thema Gewalt in der Bibel und im Koran gestellt. Anhand von Textbeispielen und hermeneutischen Zugangsweisen werden die Probleme angesprochen und Möglichkeiten zum Verständnis und zur Auslegung erörtert.
