With a decidedly interdisciplinary approach, the volume brings together a wide range of critical reflections, practical perspectives and concrete applications of artificial intelligence in museums and offers an overview of the current state of the debate.

Durch die Anwendung etablierter Erkenntnisse und Ansätze aus den Bereichen der affektiven Neurowissenschaften und der Neurolinguistik zu emotionalem Sprachgebrauch, wird versucht neue Perspektiven und Analysetechniken für die Sozial- und Politikwissenschaften herauszuarbeiten, die sich mit der rhetorischen Gestaltung und Funktion öffentlicher politischer Kommunikation befassen. Im Rahmen dieser Bemühungen habe ich einen sequenziellen Mixed-Methods-Ansatz entwickelt, eine neopragmatische Diskursanalyse (NPDA), die auf der bestehenden Methodologie der Pragmatischen Soziologie der Kritik (PSC) basiert. Diese Methode ermöglicht es, die Argumentationsstrategien und -muster von Akteuren abzuleiten und ihre Verwendung von hochgradig erregender emotionaler Sprache (via HAEWWörterbuch) nachzuzeichnen. In zwei separaten Fallstudien habe ich diesen neu entwickelten Ansatz angewendet, um (1) die US-Präsidentschaftswahlkämpfe 2016 von Trump und Clinton zu analysieren sowie (2) öffentliche Reden britischer Parteiführer:innen der Conservative und der Labour Party von 1900 bis 2019. Ich habe festgestellt, dass emotionale Sprache in der gesamten untersuchten (politischen) Kommunikation vorkommt und dass sie hauptsächlich eine Highlighter-Funktion in den Argumentationen der Akteure einnimmt. Politische Kommunikation, als eine spezifische Ausformung menschlicher Kommunikation, scheint immer ‚emotional‘ zu sein.

How have these human itineraries been represented in contemporary culture? This book considers the migrant's story as portrayed in literature, cinema, museums and festivals in Italy and France, in order to explore the widespread ethical complexities related to agency and advocacy.     Abstract: Diese Dissertation aus der Sparte der Reflexiven Bibliometrie erforscht die Rückwirkungen der Verwendung von quantitativen Indikatoren in der Wissenschaftsevaluation auf die Wissensproduktion und Forschungsqualität in der Astronomie. Eine qualitative Analyse der strukturellen Bedingungen der akamdeischen Astronomie anhand des Rational Choice Frameworks führen zur Beobachtung eines "Evaluation Gap" zwischen dem, was Indikatoren messen und dem, was Forscher unter Forschungsqualität verstehen. Die Analyse offenbart weiters einen Balanceakt, in dem Astronomen zwischen Publikationsdruck und Forschungsintegrität Kompromisse finden. Weiterführende quantitative Untersuchungen unter Einbezug von Organisational Culture Theories und Self-Determination Theory zeigen, dass kontrollierte Formen von Motivation zu einem erhöhten Publikationsdruck und wissenschaftlichem Fehlverhalten führen, während autonome Formen von Motivation das Gegenteil bewirken.     Abstract: Diese Dissertation aus der Sparte der Reflexiven Bibliometrie erforscht die Rückwirkungen der Verwendung von quantitativen Indikatoren in der Wissenschaftsevaluation auf die Wissensproduktion und Forschungsqualität in der Astronomie. Eine qualitative Analyse der strukturellen Bedingungen der akamdeischen Astronomie anhand des Rational Choice Frameworks führen zur Beobachtung eines "Evaluation Gap" zwischen dem, was Indikatoren messen und dem, was Forscher unter Forschungsqualität verstehen. Die Analyse offenbart weiters einen Balanceakt, in dem Astronomen zwischen Publikationsdruck und Forschungsintegrität Kompromisse finden. Weiterführende quantitative Untersuchungen unter Einbezug von Organisational Culture Theories und Self-Determination Theory zeigen, dass kontrollierte Formen von Motivation zu einem erhöhten Publikationsdruck und wissenschaftlichem Fehlverhalten führen, während autonome Formen von Motivation das Gegenteil bewirken.     Abstract: In September 2021 a very special academic conference took place: T2051MCC - The 2051 Munich Climate Conference. Researchers from across the academic spectrum assembled to discuss climate change. What made it special was that everyone held their lecture as if it took place in an imagined year 2051. The theatre collective Büro Grandezza had released an open call for contributions to a conference in Munich. Almost 50 researchers wrote papers on climate narratives, geoengineering, coastal adaptation and other topics. This particular framework allowed them to break out of the constraints of the current discourse without neglecting methodology or thematic sharpness.

    Abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Bedeutung und Auswirkungen von Plattformarbeit in Westeuropa und Nordamerika. Dafür werden die Zusammenhänge zwischen drei Ebenen untersucht: Erstens die Gestaltung des Arbeitsmodells als Mesoebene, zweitens bestehende Arbeitsmarktentwicklungen und nationale Regulierungskontexte als Makroebene, sowie drittens das Leben und Erleben des Arbeitsmodells von Plattformarbeiter*innen als Mikroebene. Die empirische Untersuchung konzentriert sich auf Crowdwork als ortsunabhängige Form von Plattformarbeit. Zudem wird eine Triangulation von qualitativen und quantitativen Forschungsmethoden sowie eine komparative Perspektive zwischen unterschiedlichen Aufgabenkomplexitäten (Mikro- und Makroaufgaben) und institutionellen Kontexten (Deutschland und USA) genutzt. Die Mehrebenenuntersuchung zeigt, dass Plattformarbeit auf der Mesoebene eine arbeitsorganisatorische Innovation darstellt, die auf der Makro- und Mikroebene an bestehende Entwicklungen anknüpft. Auf der Mesoebene zeigen sich vielfältigere und komplexere Ansätze der Arbeitsorganisation und Arbeitskontrolle als häufig angenommen. Auf der Makroebene knüpft Plattformarbeit an bestehende Prozesse der Auslagerung, Flexibilisierung und Prekarisierung von Arbeit, wobei der nationale Regulierungskontext weiterhin prägend ist. Auf der Mikroebene zeigt sich, dass die Heterogenität der Plattformarbeiter*innen und das hohe Maß an Eigenverantwortung ihre Individualisierung befördert. Die vorliegende Arbeit schlussfolgert, dass eine Plattformisierung der Arbeitswelt keineswegs gegeben ist. Die Bedeutung von Plattformarbeit wird insbesondere darin verortet, dass es die weitere Ausbreitung und Ausdifferenzierung von prekären Erwerbsformen auf der Makroebene und die Individualisierung von prekär Erwerbstätigen auf der Mikroebene befördert. Die vorliegende Arbeit verortet in dieser Vielfalt an Prekarität und Individualisierung der Prekären eine Form von Herrschaft.
    Abstract: Englische Version: This study examines the importance and consequences of platform work in Western Europe and North America. To this end, the connections between three levels are examined: First, the design of the work model as the meso level, second, existing labour market developments and national regulatory contexts as the macro level, and third, the forms of use and perceptions of platform workers as the micro level. The empirical investigation focuses on crowdwork as a location-independent form of platform work. Furthermore, the study uses a triangulation of qualitative and quantitative research methods as well as a comparative perspective between different task complexities (micro and macro tasks) and institutional contexts (Germany and USA). The multi-level investigation shows that platform work represents an innovation at the meso level that reflects and reinforces existing developments at the macro and micro levels. At the meso level, more diverse and complex approaches to work organization and control emerge than is often assumed. At the macro level, platform work reflects and reinforces processes of outsourcing, flexibilization and precarisation of work, though the national regulatory context remains a central factor. At the micro level, the heterogeneity of platform worker and the high degree of personal responsibility promotes their individualization. The study concludes that a platformisation of work is far from certain. The study attributes the importance of platform work to the fact that it promotes the further spread and differentiation of precarious employment at the macro level and the individualization of precarious workers at the micro level. The study identifies this variety of precarity and individualization of the precarious as a form of domination.

I am always learning something new about research methods, and, perhaps, most central to this preface-I really enjoy teaching research methods courses. I designed this research methods book to help students overcome their fear of research methods and to provide instructors with foundational material for their classroom use. Over the previous editions, including this one, I have received a substantial amount of feedback of how the book could be more effective for both instructors and students.     Abstract: Das Thema dieser Arbeit ist die Heterogenität der Arbeitsmarktresultate über den Lebenszyklus und über die Geschlechter hinweg. Die Dissertation besteht aus drei unabhängigen Forschungsarbeiten (Kapitel 2-4), die sich auf komplementäre Aspekte der übergeordneten Forschungsfrage konzentrieren: Wie bestimmen Erwerbsentscheidungen das Einkommen und welche Rolle spielt die Geschlechtskomponente? Kapitel 1 führt in das Thema Lohn- und Geschlechtergefälle ein und wie diese mit Erwerbsentscheidungen zusammenhängen. Kapitel 2 analysiert Daten des Deutschen Sozio-oekonomischen Panels und der Innovationsstichprobe des Panels und untersucht die Rolle von verzerrten Erwartungen. Es setzt falsche Vorstellungen über die Arbeitsmarktvergütung von Teilzeitarbeitsjahren mit der Neigung von Frauen zur Teilnahme an Teilzeitbeschäftigung und den daraus resultierenden Einkommensverlusten aus der Beschäftigung in Beziehung. Kapitel 3 fügt die Dimension der Karriereentwicklung hinzu. Es zeigt auf, dass Arbeitserfahrung in Teilzeitbeschäftigung im Vergleich zu Vollzeitbeschäftigung mit geringeren Aufstiegsschancen einhergeht, und dass Beförderungen wichtige Quellen für Lohnsteigerungen sind. Zusammengenommen zeigt die Analyse, dass geringere Löhne durch Teilzeiterfahrung zwei Hauptkomponenten haben – einen erschwerten Karriereaufstieg in höher bezahlte Karrierestufen und ein stagnierendes Lohnwachstum unabhängig von der Karrierestufe. Das letzte Kapitel ergänzt die Diskussion über Lösungen für eine seit langem bestehende Herausforderung in der empirischen Arbeitsökonomie - die Selektionsverzerrung bei Löhnen.     Abstract: Englische Version: The topic of this thesis is the heterogeneity in labor market outcomes over the life cycle and across gender. The thesis comprises three independent research papers (Chapters 2-4), which focus on complementary aspects of the overreaching research question: how do employment choices determine earnings, and what role does the gender component play? Chapter 1 introduces the topic of wage and gender gaps and how these stand related to employment choices. Chapter 2 analyzes data from the German Socio-Economic Panel and the Panel's Innovation Sample and investigates the role of biases in beliefs. It relates misperceptions about the labor market remuneration of years spent working part-time to the women's propensity to engage in part-time employment and the consequent earnings losses. Chapter 3 adds the dimension of career development. It posits that part-time penalties in experience accumulation decrease the chances of being promoted and that promotions are important sources of wage growth. In sum, the analysis shows that part-time wage penalties have two key components - hampered career progression to higher-paying career levels and stagnating wage growth regardless of career level. The final chapter adds to the discussion on solutions to a longstanding challenge in empirical labor economics posed by the selection bias in wages observed by econometricians. It contributes a novel non-parametric estimator of the selection-free cumulative distribution wage function. This chapter leverages administrative data records from Germany to show how the estimator can be applied in estimating a selection-corrected distribution of gender wage gaps.

    Abstract: Das Thema dieser Arbeit ist die Heterogenität der Arbeitsmarktresultate über den Lebenszyklus und über die Geschlechter hinweg. Die Dissertation besteht aus drei unabhängigen Forschungsarbeiten (Kapitel 2-4), die sich auf komplementäre Aspekte der übergeordneten Forschungsfrage konzentrieren: Wie bestimmen Erwerbsentscheidungen das Einkommen und welche Rolle spielt die Geschlechtskomponente? Kapitel 1 führt in das Thema Lohn- und Geschlechtergefälle ein und wie diese mit Erwerbsentscheidungen zusammenhängen. Kapitel 2 analysiert Daten des Deutschen Sozio-oekonomischen Panels und der Innovationsstichprobe des Panels und untersucht die Rolle von verzerrten Erwartungen. Es setzt falsche Vorstellungen über die Arbeitsmarktvergütung von Teilzeitarbeitsjahren mit der Neigung von Frauen zur Teilnahme an Teilzeitbeschäftigung und den daraus resultierenden Einkommensverlusten aus der Beschäftigung in Beziehung. Kapitel 3 fügt die Dimension der Karriereentwicklung hinzu. Es zeigt auf, dass Arbeitserfahrung in Teilzeitbeschäftigung im Vergleich zu Vollzeitbeschäftigung mit geringeren Aufstiegsschancen einhergeht, und dass Beförderungen wichtige Quellen für Lohnsteigerungen sind. Zusammengenommen zeigt die Analyse, dass geringere Löhne durch Teilzeiterfahrung zwei Hauptkomponenten haben – einen erschwerten Karriereaufstieg in höher bezahlte Karrierestufen und ein stagnierendes Lohnwachstum unabhängig von der Karrierestufe. Das letzte Kapitel ergänzt die Diskussion über Lösungen für eine seit langem bestehende Herausforderung in der empirischen Arbeitsökonomie - die Selektionsverzerrung bei Löhnen.     Abstract: Englische Version: The topic of this thesis is the heterogeneity in labor market outcomes over the life cycle and across gender. The thesis comprises three independent research papers (Chapters 2-4), which focus on complementary aspects of the overreaching research question: how do employment choices determine earnings, and what role does the gender component play? Chapter 1 introduces the topic of wage and gender gaps and how these stand related to employment choices. Chapter 2 analyzes data from the German Socio-Economic Panel and the Panel's Innovation Sample and investigates the role of biases in beliefs. It relates misperceptions about the labor market remuneration of years spent working part-time to the women's propensity to engage in part-time employment and the consequent earnings losses. Chapter 3 adds the dimension of career development. It posits that part-time penalties in experience accumulation decrease the chances of being promoted and that promotions are important sources of wage growth. In sum, the analysis shows that part-time wage penalties have two key components - hampered career progression to higher-paying career levels and stagnating wage growth regardless of career level. The final chapter adds to the discussion on solutions to a longstanding challenge in empirical labor economics posed by the selection bias in wages observed by econometricians. It contributes a novel non-parametric estimator of the selection-free cumulative distribution wage function. This chapter leverages administrative data records from Germany to show how the estimator can be applied in estimating a selection-corrected distribution of gender wage gaps.

    Abstract: Ziel dieser Dissertation war es, ethnische Diskriminierung im zeitgenössischen Recruitment zu untersuchen. Diskriminierung im Recruitment wurde oft durch automatisches Aussortieren beim CV Screening oder durch unethisches Verhalten aufgrund von modernen Vorurteilen erklärt. Bisher war unklar, ob zeitgenössisches Recruitment von ethnischer Diskriminierung betroffen ist und welche psychologischen Mechanismen ggf. zu Diskriminierung führen. Um diese Forschungslücke zu füllen, habe ich in einem mixed-method-Ansatz drei empirische Studien durchgeführt: eine qualitative Interviewstudie, eine Analyse von Paneldaten und zwei Experimentalstudien. Die qualitative Inhaltsanalyse zeigte, dass aktive Suche und ausgelagertes Recruitment potenziell von Diskriminierung betroffen sind. Die Inhaltsanalyse deutete auf drei potenzielle Quellen für Diskriminierung hin: eigene Vorurteile von Recruiter*innen, Vorgaben von auftraggebenden Firmen, bestimmte Kandidat*innen auszuschließen und die Annahmen, dass Firmen bestimmte Kandidat*innen bevorzugen. In einem mixed logistic Model fand ich Evidenz in den Paneldaten dafür, dass Frauen, ältere Mitarbeiter*innen und Mitarbeiter*innen, die im südlichen/östlichen Europa geboren wurde, weniger aktiv angesprochen wurden und Frauen weniger Jobangebote erhielten. In den Online-Experimenten zeigte sich, dass Meta-Stereotypisierung, d.h. Annahmen über die Vorlieben von Firmen, größere Effekte auf die Einschätzung der Einstellungschancen von ethnischen Minoritäten hatte als eigene Vorurteile von Recruitern. Verringerte Einstellungschancen von ethnischen Minderheiten bei traditionellen Firmen wurden dabei von der Annahme vermittelt, dass eher deutsche Kandidat*innen und Kandidat*innen, die keiner Minderheit angehören, bevorzugt werden. Die Ergebnisse der drei Studien sind erste Belege dafür, dass zeitgenössisches Recruitment von Diskriminierung beeinflusst sein könnte. [...]
    Abstract: Englische Version: This dissertation focuses on ethnic discrimination in contemporary recruitment. According to dual process theories, attitudes can guide recruitment behavior when recruiters do not have sufficient time and motivation to control their behavior. But it is unclear whether contemporary recruitment is affected by ethnic discrimination and what psychological mechanisms drive this discrimination. I conducted three empirical studies to fill this research gap: a qualitative interview study, a panel study, and two online experiments. I found evidence that contemporary recruitment may indeed be affected by discrimination. The content analysis revealed that active sourcing approach and outside recruitment are potentially affected by ethnic discrimination. There was no support for the assumption that selection and assessment in contemporary recruitment is implicitly driven. A data-driven analysis revealed three sources of ethnic discrimination in contemporary recruitment: the recruiters’ own prejudices, the hiring managers’ request to sort certain candidate groups out, and the recruiters’ assumptions about companies’ preferences. The panel analysis found quantitative support for the assumption that marginalized group members are actively sourced less often. In a mixed logistic model, I found evidence that women, older employees, and employees born in Southern/Eastern Europe were actively sourced less often and that women were offered jobs less often. In the experiments, I compared the impact of recruiters’ own prejudices and meta-stereotyping—that is, assumptions about companies’ preferences—on the assessment of minority candidates. It turned out that meta-stereotyping showed larger effects on the assessment of the hiring chances of ethnic minorities than recruiters’ own prejudices. [...]

    Abstract: This book explores what's happening to ways of seeing urban spaces in the contemporary moment, when so many of the technologies through which cities are visualised are digital. Cities have always been pictured, in many media and for many different purposes. This edited collection explores how that picturing is changing in an era of digital visual culture. Analogue visual technologies like film cameras were understood as creating some sort of a trace of the real city. Digital visual technologies, in contrast, harvest and process digital data to create images that are constantly refreshed, modified and circulated. Each of the chapters in this volume examines a different example of this processual visuality is reconfiguring the spatial and temporal organisation of urban life.
