    Kurzfassung: "This study tackles pertinent questions about daily life and socio-economic interactions in the late Ptolemaic town of Pathyris (186-88 BCE) through an empirically grounded network analysis of 428 Greek and Demotic documents associated with 21 archives from the site. The author moves beyond traditional boundaries of Egyptological and Papyrological research by means of an innovative and interdisciplinary methodology - zigzagging back and forth between archaeological field survey, close reading of ancient texts, formal methods of Social Network Analysis (SNA) and explanatory theories and concepts borrowed from economics and other social sciences."--

    Kurzfassung: In der digitalen Ökonomie gelten Daten als »das neue Öl«. Gerade »personal data« ist aber nicht einfach da, sondern muss produziert werden. Markus Unternährer analysiert, wie aus datengenerierenden Beziehungen beziehungsgenerierende Daten werden. Anhand einer Unternehmensethnografie und einer Untersuchung von algorithmischen Empfehlungssystemen legt er die verschiedenen Momente der Datafizierung offen, in denen an sich banale, digitale Verhaltensweisen zu einer wertvollen Ressource umgearbeitet werden - und zeigt, dass Datafizierung zwischen den Wertregimes von Gabe und Ware changiert.

    Kurzfassung: China's Macroeconomic Performance in The First Half of 2022 -- Projection for China’s Macroeconomy in 2022-2023 -- The Impact of Us and European Economic Slowdown on the Chinese Economy.
    Kurzfassung: This report is a partial result of China’s Quarterly Macroeconomic Model (CQMM), a project developed and maintained by the Center for Macroeconomic Research (CMR) at Xiamen University. The CMR is one of the Key Research Institutes of Humanities and Social Sciences sponsored by the Ministry of Education of China, focusing on China’s economic growth and macroeconomic policy. The CMR started to develop CQMM for purpose of short-term forecasting, policy analysis, and simulation in 2005. Based on CQMM, the CMR and its partners hold press conferences to release forecasts for China’ major macroeconomic variables. Since July 2006, thirty-three quarterly reports on China’s macroeconomic outlook have been presented.

    Kurzfassung: This book presents the results of an international comparative study on the causes of rule deviation in business and medical organizations. Based on document and interview analyses as well as experiments, the discrepancy between (state) regulations and organizational practice is elaborated and discussed in an interdisciplinary perspective. On the basis of the distinction between organizational and individual deviance, it could be shown across national boundaries that the unwritten rules of the organization make a decisive contribution in explaining organizational wrongdoing, as well as their containment. Implications for effective prevention derived from this are also pointed out.     Kurzfassung: Wie kann ein Umbau technischer Geräte, von Prozessen und Infrastrukturen aus einer Postwachstumsperspektive aussehen? Mit dem Ansatz der konvivialen Technik stellt Andrea Vetter eine empirische Technikethik vor, die sie durch ethnographische Erkundungen in der Technikproduktion sowie die Sichtung historischer Quellen zu »alternativer« Technik entwickelt hat. Anhand der Beispiele Komposttoilette und Lastenfahrrad arbeitet sie die zentralen Kriterien für eine postwachstumstaugliche Technikbewertung aus: Verbundenheit, Zugänglichkeit, Anpassungsfähigkeit, Bio-Interaktivität und Angemessenheit.

    Kurzfassung: The omission of pension wealth potentially distorts the international comparison of wealth distributions. Private pension wealth is often included in households’ wealth portfolios, while public pension claims are not. Augmented wealth, the sum of net worth and pension wealth, resolves this limitation by including the present value of social security pension wealth. This article provides a detailed analysis of augmented wealth in Australia between 2002 and 2018, capturing the establishment of the compulsory private pension scheme, Superannuation, which was introduced in 1992. Augmented wealth is slightly less equally distributed in Australia than in Germany or Switzerland but more equal than in the United States. The article also explores the relationship between Superannuation dissaving rates and the means-tested public pension scheme, Age Pension, and its distributional implications.

Unter dem Thema »Gleichheit in einer ungleichen Welt« werden Aspekte wie Chancen- und Ergebnisgleichheit, die Rolle des Wettbewerbs sowie die Frage, wie sich gesellschaftliche Forderungen und staatliche Eingriffe im Namen der Gleichheit mit individueller Freiheit vereinbaren lassen, diskutiert. Im Hintergrund steht dabei immer das Prinzip, dass Gleiches gleich und Ungleiches ungleich zu behandeln ist. Den Begriff Gleichheit neu zu fokussieren, ist heute wichtiger denn je, denn die Welt sieht sich mit globalen Bedrohungen konfrontiert, die das Potenzial haben, bestehende Ungleichheiten massiv zu verschärfen.     Kurzfassung: A study of the modes of predation used by and against the Sanema people of Venezuela. Predation is central to the cosmology and lifeways of the Sanema-speaking Indigenous people of Venezuelan Amazonia, but it also marks their experience of modernity under the socialist "Bolivarian" regime and its immense oil wealth. Yet predation is not simply violence and plunder. For Sanema people, it means a great deal more: enticement, seduction, persuasion. It suggests an imminent threat but also opportunity and even sanctuary. Amy Penfield spent two and a half years in the field, living with and learning from Sanema communities. She discovered that while predation is what we think it is-invading enemies, incursions by gold miners, and unscrupulous state interventions-Sanema are not merely prey. Predation, or appropriation without reciprocity, is essential to their own activities. They use predatory techniques of trickery in hunting and shamanism activities, while at the same time, they employ tactics of manipulation to obtain resources from neighbors and from the state. A richly detailed ethnography, Predatory Economies looks beyond well-worn tropes of activism and resistance to tell a new story of agency from an Indigenous perspective

    Kurzfassung: Challenging the simplistic story by which feminism has become complicit in neoliberalism, this book traces the course of globalization of women’s economic empowerment from the Global South to the Global North and critically examines the practice of empowering low-income women, primarily migrant, indigenous and racialised women. The author argues that women’s economic empowerment organizations become embedded in the neoliberal re-organization of relations between civil society, state and market, and in the reconfiguration of relations between the personal and the political. Also examined are the contractual nature of institutional arrangements in neoliberalism, the ontological divide between economy and society, and the marginalisation of feminist economics that persists in the field of women’s economic empowerment. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of social sciences, gender studies, sociology, and economics. This book is based on the author’s doctoral dissertation at Humboldt University, Faculty of Cultural, Social and Educational Sciences. Inna Michaeli is a sociologist who has been deeply involved in feminist and social movements for over two decades. Through her research, she has explored intersections of feminism and neoliberalism as well as identity and belonging, economic globalisation and knowledge production. She currently works at AWID, a global feminist organization.

    Kurzfassung: This book explores the Arctic as a rapidly evolving phenomenon in international affairs of a rising number of stakeholders. For decades, Arctic studies used to be an affair of a relatively narrow group of experts from northern countries. This time is over due to a new Chinese Arctic policy, as well as growing regional interests from South Korea, Singapore, India and Japan. Contributors reflect on new roles for the Arctic region: both as a playground for the old school nation state competition and even confrontation, and a new source for international cooperation in energy, logistics and natural sciences. Climate change, political tensions and economic competition make Arctic a hotter venue of international relations. This new Arctic fever, studied through a comparative analysis of different regional agendas, especially with a focus on the US–China–Russia triangle, represents the main subject of our book, which will be of interest to scholars of geopolitics, of climate change, and of 21st century energy economics. Anastasia Likhacheva works as a Dean at the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at the Higher School of Economics (HSE) in Moscow, Russia. Her key area of expertise includes geo-economics with a particular focus on sanctions, Eurasian integration and Russian foreign policy in Greater Eurasia. She regularly prepares policy briefs for senior Russian public authorities and has been a member of expert working groups of the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East since 2014. She also co-leads the ThinkArctic Project within the Program of Russian Chairmanship in the Arctic Councli 2021-2023.

    Kurzfassung: The Rwanda CCDR highlights key interventions that are needed in Rwanda to strengthen climate resilience in the context of country's development priorities and its commitments under the Paris Agreement. The CCDR finds that Rwanda's unconditional adaptation and mitigation commitments (i.e., the actions the country plans to implement through 2030 using existing and planned domestic and external financial resources) would substantially dampen the shocks to GDP resulting from increased weather variability. Unconditional NDC investments would boost industrial output and employment during project implementation compared to their baseline levels. The CCDR also finds that conditional actions boost the capital stock above the baseline by more than 4% on average in the late-2020s and by 1% towards mid-century. The additional climate investments in agriculture, energy, and infrastructure simulated in the CCDR could also accelerate the pace of structural transformation. Considering the current global and national fiscal context, finding the right balance between development and climate action will be instrumental for Rwanda to sustain its impressive growth rates and deliver its national development plan Vision 2050. The CCDR offers recommendations organized by priority areas, where sector-specific interventions and projects are presented

    Kurzfassung: Working‐time regimes structure time‐use and (gender) inequality, but processes shaping the availability of flexible working‐hours arrangements remain poorly understood. This study adopts a longitudinal perspective to investigate change in the provision of long‐ and short‐term working‐time accounts by firms in Germany between 2002 and 2016. In this period, flexibility policies became more common, but union coverage declined, motivating the question: Are unions losing their influence on working‐time arrangements? And if so, is availability increasingly determined by firms' agency? Dualization theory implies that while unions have a narrowing sphere of influence, their collective bargaining power remains intact. By contrast, the classical assumption is that reduced coverage leads to a reduced bargaining power. A third line of argument holds that where unions' influence declines, firms' agency driven by factors such as competition for skilled employees or the need to retain female employees becomes more important. Using the German IAB Establishment Panel this study decomposes the overall expansion of flexibility policies in parts accruing to changes in firms' behaviour and changes in industrial relations and labour market conditions. The study finds that increased competition for employees contributed to better working conditions. The penalty for firms employing a high share of women decreased slightly, but not for the most legally protected policies. Erosion of collective bargaining is found to have a small negative impact on working‐time arrangements. Overall, the findings confirm that despite a diminished sphere of influence, union's bargaining power remained relatively stable.

    Kurzfassung: This book presents cutting-edge research and exploration of the role of nation-state when big tech firms present themselves as new participants in contemporary international relations that act on an equal footing with nation-states. The general research goal of this book is to identify the justifications that nation-states have adopted to regulate the big tech firms and the impacts of this process on international trade in the main economies in the world. With the massive instrumentation of data, big tech firms have become actors with the capacity to intervene not only in economies but also, above all, in the politics of different countries with different systems. The emergence of big tech firms has transformed the approach to the concepts of national security, information management and access to new technologies among nation-states. The principles and fundamentals of cyber sovereignty have become one of the bases of states in the contemporary system of international relations. Today, the influence of big tech firms in different societies in the contemporary world is one of the main forms of power. This book tries to collect and present the recent state of the art in studies on the relationship between big tech firms and nation-states in the literature. It also addresses how governments such as those of the US, China and the EU are changing their legislation, creating control and data security mechanisms, imposing entry restrictions on foreign companies, and regulating the actions beyond the cloud of big tech firms inside and outside their borders.

    Kurzfassung: Unter dem Schlagwort »ethnische Ökonomie« wird die berufliche Selbstständigkeit von Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund in Politik und Wissenschaft diskutiert. Indem die Selbstständigen ihren »Markt machen«, positionieren sie sich mit dem und gegen diesen Diskurs. Robert Birnbauer zeigt aus einer wirtschaftsanthropologischen Perspektive, wie die Unternehmer*innen dabei ihre gesellschaftlichen Positionen und etablierte ökonomische Wissensbestände gleichermaßen verhandeln. Dazu folgt er dem Diskurs um »ethnische Ökonomie« von der politischen in die unternehmerische Praxis und zeigt: Geschäfte im Markt für muslimische Mode werden zum Resultat gesellschaftlicher Diskurse und der Markt zum Effekt beschreibbarer unternehmerischer Praxis – weit jenseits einer »unsichtbaren Hand«.

    Kurzfassung: In Decolonizing the Social Sciences and the Humanities Bernd Reiter contributes to the ongoing efforts to decolonize the social sciences and humanities, by arguing that true decolonization implies a liberation from the elite culture that Western civilization has perpetually promoted. Reiter brings together lessons learned from field research on a Colombian indigenous society, a maroon society, also in Colombia, from Afro-Brazilian religion, from Spanish Anarchism, and from German Council democracy, and from analyzing non-Western ontologies and epistemologies in general. He claims that once these lessons are absorbed, it becomes clear that Western civilization has advanced individualization and elitism. The chapters present the case that human beings are able to rule themselves, and have done so for some 300,000 years, before the Neolithic Revolution. Self-rule and rule by councils is our default option once we rid ourselves of leaders and rulers. Reiter concludes by considering the massive manipulations and the heinous divisions that political elitism, dressed in the form of representative democracy, has brought us, and implores us to seek true freedom and democracy by liberating ourselves from political elites and taking on political responsibilities. Welche Rolle spielte die (Nicht-)Wahrnehmung von Reichtum, der neben der wachsenden sozialen Ungleichheit zu den prägenden Erfahrungen unserer Gegenwart zählt, in der Durchsetzung der Demokratie und Marktwirtschaft? Anne Kurr fragt aus zeithistorischer Perspektive nach den Konjunkturen der Wissensproduktion zu Reichtum zwischen 1960 und 1990. Reichtum – so ihre These – wurde nur als Randthema in Verteilungsdebatten verhandelt, dennoch politisierte sich die Diskussion um ihn in den langen 1960er Jahren. Wer als reich galt und in wie fern sich Reichtum in wenigen Händen konzentrierte, blieb dabei umstritten. Die Skandalisierung einer Reichtumskonzentration nahm in den 1970er Jahren infolge der Wirkmächtigkeit marktliberaler Konzepte ab und gewann erst nach der »Wiedervereinigung« wieder an Fahrt.

    Kurzfassung: The idea of a moral economy has been explored and assessed in numerous disciplines. The anthropological studies in this volume provide a new perspective to this idea by showing how the relations of workers, employees and employers, and of firms, families and households are interwoven with local notions of moralities. From concepts of individual autonomy, kinship obligations, to ways of expressing mutuality or creativity, moral values exert an unrealized influence, and these often produce more consent than resistance or outrage.

    Kurzfassung: Economic arguments favoring increased immigration restrictions suggest that immigrants undermine the culture, institutions, and productivity of destination countries. But is this actually true? Nowrasteh and Powell systematically analyze cross-country evidence of potential negative effects caused by immigration relating to economic freedom, corruption, culture, and terrorism. They analyze case studies of mass immigration to the United States, Israel, and Jordan. Their evidence does not support the idea that immigration destroys the institutions responsible for prosperity in the modern world. This nonideological volume makes a qualified case for free immigration and the accompanying prosperity.

    Kurzfassung: This open access book considers a pivotal era in Chinese history from a global perspective. This book’s insight into Chinese and international history offers timely and challenging perspectives on initiatives like “Chinese characteristics”, “The New Silk Road” and “One Belt, One Road” in broad historical context. Global History with Chinese Characteristics analyses the feeble state capacity of Qing China questioning the so-called “High Qing” (shèng qīng 盛清) era’s economic prosperity as the political system was set into a “power paradox” or “supremacy dilemma”. This is a new thesis introduced by the author demonstrating that interventionist states entail weak governance. Macao and Marseille as a new case study aims to compare Mediterranean and South China markets to provide new insights into both modern eras’ rising trade networks, non-official institutions and interventionist impulses of autocratic states such as China’s Qing and Spain’s Bourbon empires.

Peter Donath und Annette Szegfü dokumentieren erstmals, wie es der Gewerkschaft unter schwierigen wirtschaftlichen Bedingungen gelang, Tarifverträge mit eigenen Akzenten durchzusetzen und gleichzeitig zur anerkannten Sprecherin ›ihrer‹ Branchen zu werden.

    Kurzfassung: Religiöse Orte werden erst durch diskursive Strategien als solche konstruiert und wahrgenommen. Auf der Grundlage jüngerer Theorien zu mehrfach gemeinsam genutzten religiösen Orten zeigt sich, dass historisch kontingente Orte mehrdeutige Räume sein können: Am Kloster Sveti Naum überlappen sich interreligiöse Aushandlungen mit Tourismus, Wirtschaft und Politik. Anhand empirisch-qualitativer Daten ihrer einjährigen Feldforschung zeigt Evelyn Reuter Kontinuitäten und Brüche im Wandel dieses Klosters auf und kontextualisiert sie in der regionalen Religionsgeschichte bis zur Gegenwart postsozialistischer Transformationsprozesse

    Kurzfassung: Müll ist nicht gleich Müll, er ist nicht nur ein entweder »vergänglicher« oder »dauerhafter« Rest nach der Kategorisierung von wertlosen Abfällen - Müll ist ein Prozess. Wie Michael Thompson bereits 1979 gezeigt hat, ist »Wert« nämlich keine feste Eigenschaft von Gütern, sondern ein Ergebnis sozialer und kultureller Konventionen und Zuschreibungen. Daher kann nur in der Kategorie des Wertlosen, also im Müll, die Neubewertung vom Vergänglichen zum Dauerhaften, vom Wertlosen zum Werthaltigen stattfinden. Unter Hinzunahme verschiedener neuer Beiträge wird dieser Ansatz nun erweitert. Das »Phänomen Müll« hilft so, unterschiedliche gesellschaftliche Mechanismen der Wertschöpfung zu analysieren und zu verstehen

    Kurzfassung: Mit mobilen Assistenzsystemen verbinden sich Versprechen von Entlastung und höherer Selbstständigkeit in der Arbeit. Gleichzeitig stehen sie im Verdacht, lückenlose Kontrolle herzustellen. Am Beispiel der Kommissionierung wird anhand qualitativer Betriebsfallstudien gezeigt, dass die Geräte zu einer Arbeitsverdichtung und Standardisierung beitragen, aber sie kaum für die Überwachung der Beschäftigten genutzt werden. Die Gründe hierfür sind vielfältig und liegen in regulierten Arbeitsbedingungen und der Mitbestimmung, arbeitsprozessualen Anforderungen, technischen Limitationen, alternativen Kontrollpraktiken oder der Aufrechterhaltung betrieblicher Sozialbeziehungen. Die Ergebnisse der Studie zeigen, dass einseitige Prognosen zu kurz greifen
    Kurzfassung: Mobile assistance systems are associated with promises of relief and greater independence at work. At the same time, they are suspected of conducting seamless surveillance of employees. Using the example of order picking, the qualitative case studies in this book show that the aforementioned systems contribute to the intensification and standardisation of work, but are hardly used to monitor workers. The reasons for this are manifold and lie in regulated working conditions and co-determination, work process requirements, technical limitations, alternative control practices or the maintenance of social relations. The findings of this book show that one-sided forecasts fall short of assessing the true impact of mobile assistance systems
