    Abstract: "During the early medieval Islamicate period (800-1400 CE), discourses concerned with music and musicians were wide-ranging and contentious, and expressed in works on music theory and philosophy as well as literature and poetry. But in spite of attempts by influential scholars and political leaders to limit or control musical expression, music and sound permeated all layers of the social structure. Lisa Nielson here presents a rich social history of music, musicianship and the role of musicians in the early Islamicate era. Focusing primarily on Damascus, Baghdad and Jerusalem, Lisa Nielson draws on a wide variety of textual sources written for and about musicians and their professional/private environments -- including chronicles, literary sources, memoirs and musical treatises -- as well as the disciplinary approaches of musicology to offer insights into musical performances and the lives of musicians. In the process, the book sheds light onto the dynamics of medieval Islamicate courts, as well as how slavery, gender, status and religion intersected with music in courtly life. It will appeal to scholars of the Islamicate world and historical musicologists."--

    Abstract: Music has the universal power to move individuals, peoples and societies. Music is one of the most important signifiers of cultural change. It is also most significant for youth movements and youth cultures. While Islam has a historically and traditionally rich culture of music, religious controversy on the topic of music is still ongoing. However, young Muslims in today’s globalised world seek pop cultural tools such as music, and particularly hip hop music, as way of exploring and expressing their manifold identities, whilst challenging Islamophobia, stigma and racism on the one hand and traditional and religious challenges on the other hand. In this volume, following an international conference with the same title, scholars and young academics from a variety of disciplines seek to explore and highlight the phenomena surrounding the two, somewhat artificially separated, realms of music and religion. The contributions not only look into different genres of music, from Tunisian metal over German female hip hop to Egyptian folk, but take the reader on a journey from continent to countries to cities and rural areas and thus give space and time to a widely neglected area of research: that of Muslim popular culture and young Muslims.

    Abstract: Explores how jazz helped propel the rise of African American Islam during the era of global Black liberationAmid the social change and liberation of the civil rights and Black Power movements, the tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp recorded a tribute to Malcolm X's emancipatory political consciousness. Shepp saw similarities between his revolutionary hero and John Coltrane, one of the most influential jazz musicians of the era. Later, the esteemed trumpeter Miles Davis echoed Shepp's sentiment, recognizing that Coltrane's music represented the very passion, rage, rebellion, and love that Malcolm X preached.Soundtrack to a Movement examines the link between the revolutionary Black Islam of the post-WWII generation and jazz music. It argues that from the late 1940s and '50s though the 1970s, Islam rose in prominence among African Americans in part because of the embrace of the religion among jazz musicians. The book demonstrates that the values that Islam and jazz shared-Black affirmation, freedom, and self-determination-were key to the growth of African American Islamic communities, and that it was jazz musicians who led the way in shaping encounters with Islam as they developed a Black Atlantic "cool" that shaped both Black religion and jazz styles. Soundtrack to a Movement demonstrates how by expressing their values through the rejection of systemic racism, the construction of Black notions of masculinity and femininity, and the development of an African American religious internationalism, both jazz musicians and Black Muslims engaged with a global Black consciousness and interconnected resistance movements in the African diaspora and Africa.

Diese bedeutende Quelle zu Sängersklavinnen und ihrem Liedrepertoire im Kontext muslimischen Hoflebens von den Abbasiden bis zu den Mamluken liegt mit dieser Monographie zum ersten Mal in einer kommentierten deutschen Übersetzung vor. Dr. phil. Yasemin Gökpinar, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, und Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Wien, arbeitet u. a. zu arabischer Musiktheorie und Wissenschaftsgeschichte, deren griechischen Quellen, Kodikologie, Textedition, arabisch-islamischer Musikkultur und Literatur.
    Abstract: In "Der ṭarab der Sängersklavinnen", Yasemin Gökpınar presents a text critical edition of the three known manuscripts of the 10th chapter of Ibn Faḍlallāh al-ʿUmarī’s (died 749/1349) "Masālik al-abṣār fī mamālik al-amṣār". In this monograph, she provides an unprecedented commented German translation of this important source on female singer slaves and their song repertoire in the context of Muslim court culture from the Abbasids to the Mamluks. The scientific interests of Dr. phil. Yasemin Gökpinar, Ruhr-University Bochum, and Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna, include Arabic music theory and history of sciences, their Greek sources, Arabic manuscript culture, text edition, Arabic-Islamic music culture and literature.

Nasir explores the tension between Islam and the global popularity of hip-hop, including attempts by the hip-hop ummah, or community, to draw from the struggles of African Americans in order to articulate the human rights abuses Muslims face. Nasir explores state management of hip-hop culture and how Muslim hip-hoppers are attempting to "Islamize" the genre's performance and jargon to bring the music more in line with religious requirements, which are perhaps even more fraught for female artists who struggle with who has the right to speak for Muslim women.     Abstract: Tracing the connections between music making and built space in both historical and contemporary times, this book brings together domains of intellectual reflection that have rarely been in dialogue to promote a greater understanding of the centrality of sound production in constructed environments in Muslim religious and cultural expression. Representing the fields of ethnomusicology, anthropology, art history, architecture, history of architecture, religious studies, and Islamic studies, the volume's contributors consider sonic performances ranging from poetry recitation to art, folk, popular, and ritual musics as well as religious expressions that are not usually labeled as "music" from an Islamic perspective in relation to monumental, vernacular, ephemeral, and landscape architectures; interior design; decoration and furniture; urban planning; and geography.     Abstract: "In this timely, revelatory study, Hisham Aidi examines the secular and religious movements that have recently emerged among Muslim youth in the West as a means of protest against the policies of the "War on Terror." He interviews artists and activists, and reports from music festivals and concerts. He explains how certain kinds of music--particularly hip hop, but also Jazz, gnawa, Andalusian, Judeo-Arabic, Latin and others--have come to represent a heightened racial identity and a Muslim consciousness that criss-crosses the globe. He describes how western governments--particularly the U.S. and England--use music in an attempt to deradicalize Muslim youth abroad. And he explores the increasing radicalization among Muslim youth in an historical context: looking back to the Civil Rights movement and to the words of Malcolm X which have inspired many American Muslims. In all, Aidi has written a riveting, eye-opening portrait of a growing, potentially radical segment of the global youth culture"--
