Corpus linguistic methods and netnographic reflections are used to explore how incels construct ideologies about gender, gendered social actors, and race/ethnicity, as well as where these concepts intersect.     Kurzfassung: "Innovations and Challenges: Women, Language and Sexism brings together an outstanding collection of internationally recognised researchers to recontextualise some of the questions raised by feminist thinkers 40 years ago. The topic of gender and language has evolved tremendously in the last decades and research has contributed in many ways to a heightened awareness of gender-inflected discourse. Many of the issues discussed in the 70s and 80s, however, continue to be a problem as sexism, racism and ageism in discourses in private and institutional contexts have manifested in fresh ways in recent years. In linguistics and discourse-oriented applied research, the question of plain sexism has been side-lined since sexuality and gender identity seem to be the present concerns of the great majority of gender research. By taking linguistically mediated violence as a central topic, this collection's main objective is to explore the different and subtle ways sexism and violence are materialised in discursive practices. In doing so, this book: Takes a multi-stranded investigation into the linguistic and semiotic representations of sexism in societies today from an applied linguistic and semiotic perspective; Combines critical discourse analysis, multimodality, interactional sociolinguistics and corpus methodologies to look at language, visuals and semiotic resources in the context of consumerist culture; Examines the conflicted position of women and the discourses of discrimination that still exists in every strand of modern societies; Contextualises pervasive gender issues and reviewing key gender and language topics that changed the ways we interpret interaction from the early seventies till the present; Focuses on institutional discourses and the questions of how women are excluded or discriminated against in the workplace, the law and educational contexts.     Kurzfassung: Als Sohn einer aus der Oberschicht stammenden Engländerin und eines zur Aristokratie seines Landes gehörenden Ghanaers sind dem in New York lehrenden Philosophieprofessor schon durch seine Herkunft mehrere Identitäten anhängig. In den USA als schwarz und schwul lebend, weist dies auf weitere Identitätsmerkmale hin und macht deutlich, dass die Kategorien Herkunft, Religion, Hautfarbe, Klasse, Kultur niemals starre Klassifizierungen sein können, auf die Menschen eindeutig festzulegen sind. Eine solche Festlegung führe zu Missverständnissen und Irrtümern - z.B. wenn es um die fiktive "Reinheit" der Nation geht. Viele Vorstellungen über Identitäten müssten neu interpretiert und ausgehandelt werden. - Appiah schreibt in klarer Diktion, formuliert elegant und belegt alles mit Beispielen aus Geschichte und Literatur. Er zeigt, jenseits der Klischees können Identitäten ganz unterschiedlich gelebt werden. Wenngleich er damit rechte Positionen widerlegt, ist dies keine Streitschrift, sondern ein Plädoyer für Vielfalt und Respekt. Anregend und aktuell. (2-3)

    Kurzfassung: Dieses Buch folgt einer Sehnsucht: nach einer Sprache, die Menschen nicht auf Kategorien reduziert. Nach einem Sprechen, das sie in ihrem Facettenreichtum existieren lässt. Nach wirklich gemeinschaftlichem Denken in einer sich polarisierenden Welt. Kübra Gümüsay setzt sich seit langem für Gleichberechtigung und Diskurse auf Augenhöhe ein. In ihrem ersten Buch geht sie der Frage nach, wie Sprache unser Denken prägt und unsere Politik bestimmt. Sie zeigt, wie Menschen als Individuen unsichtbar werden, wenn sie immer als Teil einer Gruppe gesehen werden - und sich nur als solche äußern dürfen. „Der Titel des ersten Buches von Kübra Gümüşay, lässt eher auf ein philosophisches Standardwerk schließen, als auf einen politischen Essay über die Ungerechtigkeiten, denen Minderheiten im öffentlichen Diskurs und im Sprachgebrauch der Mehrheitsgesellschaft ausgesetzt sind. Gümüşays Buch ist immer dann am stärksten, wenn die Autorin am eigenen Beispiel zeigt, wie sie als Benannte unter Unbenannten an ihrem Traum von einer Gesellschaft, in der „alle gleichberechtigt sprechen und sein können“ festhält. Dafür nimmt man auch ein paar Redundanzen, Abschweifungen und Selbstzitate in Kauf. Gewiss hätte dem Buch auch etwas mehr Struktur gut getan. The result of this ancient melting-pot was a culture characterised by 'postcolonial' features such as ethnic hybridity, multilingualism and artistic and literary experimentation. While Greek soon emerged as the leading language, dominating official communication and literature, epigraphic sources and indirect evidence show that the minority languages held their ground down to the fifth century BCE, and in some cases beyond.     Kurzfassung: Als Sohn einer aus der Oberschicht stammenden Engländerin und eines zur Aristokratie seines Landes gehörenden Ghanaers sind dem in New York lehrenden Philosophieprofessor schon durch seine Herkunft mehrere Identitäten anhängig. In den USA als schwarz und schwul lebend, weist dies auf weitere Identitätsmerkmale hin und macht deutlich, dass die Kategorien Herkunft, Religion, Hautfarbe, Klasse, Kultur niemals starre Klassifizierungen sein können, auf die Menschen eindeutig festzulegen sind. Eine solche Festlegung führe zu Missverständnissen und Irrtümern - z.B. wenn es um die fiktive "Reinheit" der Nation geht. Viele Vorstellungen über Identitäten müssten neu interpretiert und ausgehandelt werden. - Appiah schreibt in klarer Diktion, formuliert elegant und belegt alles mit Beispielen aus Geschichte und Literatur. Er zeigt, jenseits der Klischees können Identitäten ganz unterschiedlich gelebt werden. Wenngleich er damit rechte Positionen widerlegt, ist dies keine Streitschrift, sondern ein Plädoyer für Vielfalt und Respekt. Anregend und aktuell. (2-3)
