    Abstract: "This book explores how incels use language and other semiotic resources to construct ideologies of gender and race/ethnicity. The author theorises and positions incels' performances of masculinity against a backdrop of broader social sciences and linguistic literature, and discusses some of the limitations of different lenses through which incels have previously been understood, as well some of the ethical issues involved with researching a hostile community. Corpus linguistic methods and netnographic reflections are used to explore how incels construct ideologies about gender, gendered social actors, and race/ethnicity, as well as where these concepts intersect. Taking a post-structuralist critical analysis to this community reveals a number of way ideologies towards different groups based on social identities are linguistically constructed. This book will be relevant to those researching or studying language, gender, and sexuality, sociology, and criminology. Outside of academic applications, it is also written in a way that is accessible to external organisations interested in equality and the prevention of incel-ideology-motivated offline attacks." --

    Abstract: Wenigen anderen Ethnologen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland war es vergönnt, so wie Rüdiger Schott durch eigene Aktivitäten als individuelle Forscherpersönlichkeit maßgebend zum Aufbau und Ausbau ihrer Disziplin beizutragen. Dieser Umstand verdankt sich einerseits den von ihm seit den 60er Jahren durchgeführten Feldforschungen bei den Bulsa in Nordghana und den in den 80er Jahren angestellten ethnographischen Erhebungen bei den Lyela in Burkina Faso (vormals: Obervolta), die ihm internationale Reputation und hohe wissenschaftliche Anerkennung eingetragen haben, andererseits der permanenten Umsetzung der erreichten Forschungsergebnisse in die akademische Lehre und in weitere Forschungen, die heute als beispielhaft gelten.
    Abstract: Nicht von ungefähr gehört das Seminar für Völkerkunde der Universität Münster, das von Rüdiger Schott begründet wurde und im April 1990 auf sein 25jähriges Bestehen zurückblicken konnte, gegenwärtig zu den auch im Ausland wohlbekannten deutschen Forschungsstätten seines Fachgebiets. Dies ist nicht zuletzt deswegen der Fall, weil Schott von Anbeginn seine ethnologischen Forschungen in ständigem Austausch mit einer Reihe benachbarter Disziplinen, insbesondere mit den sozialen Handlungswissenschaften betrieben hat, wie beispielsweise mit den Wirtschaftswissenschaften und der Soziologie, der Rechtswissenschaft und den Religionswissenschaften.
    Abstract: Seine Befähigung und bis auf den heutigen Tag praktizierte Bereitschaft zur Kooperation mit diesen Nachbardisziplinen basiert auf der Einsicht, daß die Ethnologie ihre eigene Identität nur gewinnen und fortentwickeln kann, wenn sie sich auch auf der Ebene der Ausbildung ihrer analytischen Denkansätze und Grundbegriffe hierfür hinreichend kontaktfähig hält. Was Person, Leben und Werk von Rüdiger Schott angeht, so sind die äußeren Rahmendaten seines bisherigen Forscher- und Universitätslebens rasch berichtet. Jedoch wird eine auf die Forschungsinhalte und die erzielten Ergebnisse gerichtete Analyse den von ihm vorgelegten Resultaten kaum gerecht, wenn sie sich nur auf deren Relevanz für die Ethnologie als solche beschränken wollte.

    Abstract: Die Hölle ist aus der Mode geraten - oder etwa nicht? Als Androhung ewiger Verdammnis bei weltlichem Fehlverhalten kann sie in der säkularisierten Gesellschaft nicht mehr dienen. Zugleich lässt sich eine Veralltäglichung des Begriffs feststellen, die eine Bedeutungsdiffusion anzeigt: Die Hölle scheint nicht mehr für ewig zu sein, und ihre Hitze wie ihr neuer passagerer Charakter verweisen eher auf eine Assoziation mit dem Fegefeuer. Das aber wäre noch nicht einmal ein Vorhof zur Hölle. Die Beiträge des Bandes gehen der Frage nach, wie es um das Höllenverständnis in der spätmodernen Gesellschaft bestellt ist - und kommen zu interessanten Einsichten: vom Krieg bis zum Pflegeheim, von Theresienstadt bis zur Hölle der Gesellschaft

Offensive Language addresses these questions by applying an array of concepts from linguistic pragmatics and sociolinguistics to a wide range of examples, from TV to Twitter and from Mel Gibson to Donald Trump. Establishing a sharp distinction between potential offence and actual offence, Jim O'Driscoll then examines a series of case studies where offence has been caused, assessing the nature and degree of both the offence and the documented response to it in. Through close linguistic analysis, this book explores the fine line between free speech and criminal activity, searching for a principle way to distinguish the merely embarrassing from the reprehensible and the censurable. In this way, a new approach to offensive language emerges, involving both how we study it and also how it might be handled in public life"--

    Abstract: "Innovations and Challenges: Women, Language and Sexism brings together an outstanding collection of internationally recognised researchers to recontextualise some of the questions raised by feminist thinkers 40 years ago. The topic of gender and language has evolved tremendously in the last decades and research has contributed in many ways to a heightened awareness of gender-inflected discourse. Many of the issues discussed in the 70s and 80s, however, continue to be a problem as sexism, racism and ageism in discourses in private and institutional contexts have manifested in fresh ways in recent years. In linguistics and discourse-oriented applied research, the question of plain sexism has been side-lined since sexuality and gender identity seem to be the present concerns of the great majority of gender research. By taking linguistically mediated violence as a central topic, this collection's main objective is to explore the different and subtle ways sexism and violence are materialised in discursive practices.     Abstract: "This seminal book introduces revivalistics, a new trans-disciplinary field of enquiry surrounding language reclamation, revitalization and reinvigoration. The book is divided into two main parts that represent Zuckermann's fascinating and multifaceted journey into language revival, from the 'Promised Land' (Israel) to the 'Lucky Country' (Australia) and beyond. Part 1: language revival and cross-fertilization. The aim of this part is to suggest that due to the ubiquitous multiple causation, the reclamation of a no-longer spoken language is unlikely without cross-fertilization from the revivalists' mother tongue(s). Thus, one should expect revival efforts to result in a language with a hybridic genetic and typological character. The book highlights salient morphological, phonological, phonetic, syntactic, semantic and lexical features, illustrating the difficulty in determining a single source for the grammar of 'Israeli', the language resulting from the Hebrew revival. The European impact in these features is apparent inter alia in structure, semantics or productivity. Multiple causation is manifested in the Congruence Principle, according to which the more contributing languages a feature exists in, the more likely it is to persist in the emerging language. Consequently, the reality of linguistic genesis is far more complex than a simple family tree system allows. 'Revived' languages are unlikely to have a single parent. Part 2: language revival and wellbeing. The book then applies practical lessons (rather than clichés) from the critical analysis of the Hebrew reclamation to other revival movements globally, and goes on to describe the why and how of language revival. The how includes practical, nitty-gritty methods for reclaiming 'sleeping beauties' such as the Barngarla Aboriginal language of Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, e.g. using what Zuckermann calls talknology (talk technology). The why includes ethical, aesthetic, and utilitarian reasons such as improving wellbeing and mental health"--

Eine solche Festlegung führe zu Missverständnissen und Irrtümern - z.B. wenn es um die fiktive "Reinheit" der Nation geht. Viele Vorstellungen über Identitäten müssten neu interpretiert und ausgehandelt werden. - Appiah schreibt in klarer Diktion, formuliert elegant und belegt alles mit Beispielen aus Geschichte und Literatur. Er zeigt, jenseits der Klischees können Identitäten ganz unterschiedlich gelebt werden. Wenngleich er damit rechte Positionen widerlegt, ist dies keine Streitschrift, sondern ein Plädoyer für Vielfalt und Respekt. Anregend und aktuell. (2-3)
