    Abstract: This volume forms a unique and remarkable enterprise in the context of contemporary Japanese literature, social studies and the nature of Japanese society.     Abstract: While much has been written upon Social Darwinism, the historical impact of Darwinism upon theories of war and human aggression has been sadly neglected. This book is the first to study this discourse in depth. It challenges the received view that Darwinism generated essentially aggressive and warlike social values and pugnacious images of humankind. Paul Crook reconstructs the influential discourse of 'peace biology', whose liberal vision was of a basically free humanity, not fettered by iron laws of biological necessity or governed by violent genes. In fact, marriages between close relatives were commonplace in nineteenth-century England, and Adam Kuper argues that they played a crucial role in the rise of the bourgeoisie. Incest and Influence shows us just how the political networks of the eighteenth-century aristocracy were succeeded by hundreds of in-married bourgeois clans-in finance and industry, in local and national politics, in the church, and in intellectual life. In a richly detailed narrative, Kuper deploys his expertise as an anthropologist to analyze kin marriages among the Darwins and Wedgwoods, in Quaker and Jewish banking families, and in the Clapham Sect and their descendants over four generations, ending with a revealing account of the Bloomsbury Group, the most eccentric product of English bourgeois endogamy. These marriage strategies were the staple of novels, and contemporaries were obsessed with them. But there were concerns. Ideas about incest were in flux as theological doctrines were challenged.     Abstract: The Celtic Tiger has caused the Irish economy to roar ahead, but what has it done to Irish society? Some see the rising tide as having lifted all boats, while others argue that the benefits have accrued mostly to those who were already well placed. Some highlight how economic growth has raised living standards, while others say that it has imposed strains on family life, eroded values and communities, and created problems in accessing adequate housing, health care and other services. So, are we in Ireland now living in "the best of times", or has increased prosperity come at (too high) a cost? The purpose of this book, which contains a collection of chapters written by some of Ireland's leading social researchers, is to bring to bear the latest research and empirical evidence to answer these questions.     Abstract: An examination of early medieval ideas about death and dying, in relation to funeral practices, traditions and rituals. We all die, but how we perceive death as an event, process or state is inextricably connected to our experiences and the social and environmental culture in which we live. During the early middle ages, the body was used to demonstrate a whole range of concepts and assumptions: the ideal aristocrat possessed a strong, whole and virile body which reflected his inner virtues, and nobility of birth was understood to presuppose and enhance nobility of character and action. Here, the author examines how contemporary ideas about death and dying disrupted this abstract ideal. She explores the meaning of aristocratic funerary practices such as embalming and heart burial, and, conversely, looks at what the gruesomely elaborate executions of aristocratic traitors in England around the turn of the fourteenth century reveal about the role of the body in perceptions of group identity and society at large.     Abstract: The modern history of Ladakh has been profoundly shaped by influences from South Asia and beyond. In detailed empirical case-studies the contributors document and analyse change and continuities in this region brought about by colonialism, independence and modernisation. In an introductory review essay highlighting emerging themes and continuing debates in the scholarship on Ladakh, the editors argue for the need to situate Ladakh in an Indian and South Asian context, while also taking into account its cultural, linguistic and historical ties with Tibet. Studies from the neighbouring (sub)regions of Kargil, Ladakh, Zangskar and Baltistan are brought together to make an important contribution to the anthropological and sociological literature on development and modernity, as well as to Ladakh, Tibetan and South Asian studies

    Description / Table of Contents: Die alltägliche Begegnung mit dem Fremden wird oft als eine Quelle der Verunsicherung gesehen - und als eine der Ursachen für Fremdenfeindlichkeit. Was aber, wenn das Gegenteil der Fall ist? Abseits der Diskussionen um Minaretthöhen stellt diese Studie anhand des konkreten Beispiels kleiner migrantengeführter Lebensmittelgeschäfte die Integrationsfrage dort, wo das Zusammenleben mit dem Fremden tagtäglich erprobt wird. Dabei wird von alltagspraktischem Wirtschaftshandeln auf lokaler Ebene ausgegangen und mittels ethnographischer Methoden schrittweise ein praktisches und theoretisches Verständnis der eigentlichen Problematik gewonnen. Diese zeigt sich hier weniger in kultureller Differenz als in der Aushandlung sozialer Rollen vor dem Hintergrund alltäglicher Praktiken des Einkaufs

The focus of this new book is on the relationship between press and political history, examining the social and political impact of British newspapers. Throughout, the author assesses the press' contribution to enlarging and informing the public sphere. "The British Press" is both a practical introduction to the subject and a theoretically informed critique of press developments. The first half of the book leads the reader through key historical moments from the Civil War to Wapping and beyond, while the second half takes an in-depth look at current empirical and theoretical concerns.Scholarly yet accessible, the book is also not afraid to take a position on today's contentious issues. For example, Mick Temple mounts a defence of 'dumbing down', arguing that the much criticised 'tabloidisation' of newspapers has been an essential development in enabling access to the public sphere for those whose news agenda differs from the traditional template of 'serious' news. The book takes a more positive perspective on the British press than has often been the case, arguing that throughout their history our newspapers have been vital conduits for public opinion and, on occasion, catalysts for social change. Temple is also positive about the future of newspapers, pointing out the online strength of great brand names like the "Telegraph", "Guardian", "Sun" and "Mail"

    Abstract: This volume takes examples from Morocco, Egypt, Palestine, Iraq, Syria and Germany to demonstrate the potential and the limitations of youth research in the Arab world and beyond. The study of young adults is still underdeveloped as an area of research. Despite growing awareness of its vital significance since September 11th, not a single comprehensive youth study exists for an Arab country. Current research is often scattered, partly inaccessible, and to a great extent concentrates on specialized topics.
    Abstract: It is crucial, not merely for Arab societies, to know more about the attitude of almost two-thirds of the Arab population to social and political issues. Apart from one qualitative contribution on young men in Iraq, the volume focuses less on data analysis than on data collection and methodology in very difficult surroundings. The majority of Arab states do not allow opinion surveys to be conducted in their countries. Both major inter-national research centres and individual researchers have had severe problems.
