    Abstract: Zu Beginn der 1980er Jahre entsteht innerhalb der Hip-Hop-Kultur in den USA das Beatmaking – eine Musikpraxis, die auf dem kreativen Umgang mit bereits vorhandenem Klangmaterial basiert und hauptsächlich in informellen Kontexten ausgeübt wird. In den letzten 40 Jahren hat sich das Beatmaking in enger Verbindung mit musik- und medientechnologischen Entwicklungen global verbreitet und vielfältig ausdifferenziert. Dabei hat es vor allem im Bereich der populären Musik in musikalisch-ästhetischer und technisch-praktischer Hinsicht maßgebende Impulse gesetzt.In seiner qualitativ-empirischen Studie geht Chris Kattenbeck der Frage nach, was es bedeutet, als Beatmaker*in künstlerisch kompetent zu handeln, welche Fertigkeiten und Kenntnisse dafür nötig sind und wie diese erworben und entwickelt werden. Damit liefert er grundlegende Erkenntnisse über eine bislang kaum erforschte Musikpraxis und die mit ihr verbundenen künstlerischen Strategien und Techniken, ästhetischen Ziele und Vorstellungen, Wissensformen und Lernpraktiken. Dabei zeigt sich unter anderem, dass bestimmte in der Musikpädagogik vorherrschende Verständnisse – etwa von Musiklernen oder Musiktheorie – ungeeignet sind, das Beatmaking adäquat zu erfassen. Die Studie bietet daher nicht zuletzt Anlass, diese Verständnisse zu hinterfragen und neu zu konzeptualisieren, um mit der Vielfalt musikalischer Praxen in Zukunft angemessen umgehen zu können.

In a context in which disruptions to the production, distribution, and consumption of food are figured as exceptions to the smooth, just-in-time efficiencies of global supply chains, these essays reveal the global food system as one that is inherently disruptive of human lives and flourishing, and of relationships between people, places, and environments. The pandemic thus represents a particular, acute moment of disruption, offering a lens on a deeper, longer set of systemic processes, and shining new light on transformational possibilities. Victoria Stead is an anthropologist and Australian Research Council DECRA Senior Research Fellow in the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation, Deakin University. Her research sits at the intersection of attention to race and labour relations, land and landscape, and the reverberations of (post)coloniality in Australia and across Australia-Pacific relations.     Abstract: The smartphone is often literally right in front of our nose, so you would think we would know what it is. But do we? To find out, 11 anthropologists each spent 16 months living in communities in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America, focusing on the take up of smartphones by older people. Their research reveals that smartphones are technology for everyone, not just for the young. The Global Smartphone presents a series of original perspectives deriving from this global and comparative research project. Smartphones have become as much a place within which we live as a device we use to provide ‘perpetual opportunism’, as they are always with us. The authors show how the smartphone is more than an ‘app device’ and explore differences between what people say about smartphones and how they use them. The smartphone is unprecedented in the degree to which we can transform it. As a result, it quickly assimilates personal values. In order to comprehend it, we must take into consideration a range of national and cultural nuances, such as visual communication in China and Japan, mobile money in Cameroon and Uganda, and access to health information in Chile and Ireland – all alongside diverse trajectories of ageing in Al Quds, Brazil and Italy. Only then can we know what a smartphone is and understand its consequences for people’s lives around the world.

    Abstract: There are not many books about how people get younger. It doesn’t happen very often. But Ageing with Smartphones in Ireland documents a radical change in the experience of ageing. Based on two ethnographies, one within Dublin and the other from the Dublin region, the book shows that people, rather than seeing themselves as old, focus on crafting a new life in retirement. Our research participants apply new ideals of sustainability both to themselves and to their environment. They go for long walks, play bridge, do yoga, and keep as healthy as possible. As part of Ireland’s mainstream middle class, they may have more time than the young to embrace green ideals and more money to move to energy-efficient homes, throw out household detritus and protect their environment. The smartphone has become integral to this new trajectory. For some it is an intimidating burden linked to being on the wrong side of a new digital divide. But for most, however, it has brought back the extended family and old friends, and helped resolve intergenerational conflicts though facilitating new forms of grandparenting. It has also become central to health issues, whether by Googling information or looking after frail parents. The smartphone enables this sense of getting younger as people download the music of their youth and develop new interests. This is a book about acknowledging late middle age in contemporary Ireland. Where am I and where should I be, and how and where should I live?’ These questions, which individuals ask themselves throughout their lives, are among the central themes of this book, which presents an anthropological account of the everyday experiences of age and ageing in an inner-city neighbourhood in Milan, and in places and spaces beyond.Ageing with Smartphones in Urban Italy explores ageing and digital technologies amidst a backdrop of rapid global technological innovation, including mHealth (mobile health) and smart cities, and a number of wider socio-economic and technological transformations that have brought about significant changes in how people live, work and retire, and how they communicate and care for each other. Based on 16 months of urban digital ethnographic research in Milan, the smartphone is shown to be a ‘constant companion’ in, of and for contemporary life. It accompanies people throughout the day and night, and through individual and collective experiences of movement, change and rupture. Smartphone practices tap into and reflect the moral anxieties of the present moment, while posing questions related to life values and purpose, identities and belonging, privacy and sociability. Through her extensive investigation, Shireen Walton argues that ageing with smartphones in this contemporary urban Italian context is about living with ambiguity, change and contradiction, as well as developing curiosities about a changing world, our changing selves, and changing relationships with and to others. Ageing with smartphones is about figuring out how best to live together, differently.

    Abstract: For some years now, criticism of cultural appropriation has been voiced in various contexts. On the basis of relevant examples, this article examines the theoretical foundations of the criticism of cultural appropriation. Subsequently, a critique of this contemporary phenomenon is formulated. Finally, the article emphasises the relevance of the topic for the discussion regarding the didactics of foreign language learning.
    Abstract: Seit einigen Jahren wird in verschiedensten Kontexten Kritik an so genannter kultureller Aneignung (cultural appropriation) laut. Im Beitrag werden anhand aussagekräftiger Fallbeispiele die theoretischen Grundlagen der Kritik an cultural appropriation erläutert. Anschließend wird eine kulturwissenschaftliche Kritik dieses gegenwartskulturellen Phänomens formuliert. Schließlich wird die Relevanz des Themas für die fremdsprachendidaktische Diskussion herausgearbeitet.

    Abstract: Contemporary African American and Black British Women Writers: Narrative, Race, Ethics brings together British and American scholars to explore how, in texts by contemporary black women writers in the U. S. and Britain, formal narrative techniques express new understandings of race or stimulate ethical thinking about race in a reader. Taken together, the essays also demonstrate that black women writers from both sides of the Atlantic borrow formal structures and literary techniques from one another to describe the workings of structural racism in the daily lives of black subjects and to provoke readers to think anew about race. Narratology has only recently begun to use race as a category of narrative theory. This collection seeks both to show the ethical effects of narrative form on individual readers and to foster reconceptualizations of narrative theory that account for the workings of race within literature and culture.

    Abstract: In the "Introduction; or, How Star Wars Became Our Oldest Cultural Memory" of the first volume of Critique of Fantasy, the gambit of a contest between science fiction and fantasy was already sketched out.     Abstract: „Kultur, Raum und Zeit“ ist der Versuch, eine vergleichende Kulturtheorie zu schreiben, die auf umfassenden kulturellen Zusammenhängen beruht und sich nicht allein auf empirische Erhebungen verlässt. Es entwickelt den Kulturbegriff dort, wo er entsteht, auf dem Niveau der Einzelperson. Der Bezug zur Lebenswelt und zur Kultur früherer Generationen wird als Grundlage von Kulturentwicklung verstanden. Die entsprechende Wahrnehmung wird dabei zum zentralen Faktor der Entstehung von Kultur. Raum und Zeit werden so zu Schlüsselelementen in diesem Prozess. Kultur, Raum und Zeit ist die einzige Kulturtheorie, die sowohl auf empirischen Erfahrungen wie auch auf theoretischen Überlegungen basiert, die der Autor in jahrzehntelangen Aufenthalten im asiatischen Raum entwickelt hat. Beginnend in Beijing im Jahre 1978 als Student hat er die Öffnung Chinas miterlebt, war in den achtziger Jahren sechs Jahre in Japan, dann in Beijing, Shanghai und Hong Kong als schweizerischer Diplomat tätig und hat 2016 seine Karriere als Asienberater am Geneva Center for Security Policy beendet.
    Abstract: ‘Kultur, Raum und Zeit’ is an attempt to develop a comparative theory of culture relying on a comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon. It is the only model so far which integrates empirical and theoretical aspects in order to describe interrelations between different factors which form culture. The challenge of a given natural and social environment with which a person and earlier generations are confronted provides the basis for a new definition of culture. It sees perception as a key element in the process of developing culture. In this way, time and space become essential factors, hence the title ‘Culture, Space and Time’. ‘Culture, Space and Time’ is the only cultural model which successfully integrates empirical experiences and theoretical analysis into a comprehensive model for cultural comparisons. It is based on the author’s diplomatic career in Japan and China, which started with his time as a student in Beijing in 1978 and ended with his work as an Asian advisor to the Geneva Center for Security Policy GCSP in 2016.

    Abstract: »Schuld« ist ein Basisbegriff in vielen Wissenschaftszweigen. Offensichtlich ist die Funktion von Schuld in der Rechtswissenschaft, wo sie einerseits im Strafrecht und andererseits im Zivilrecht das Fundament für die Rechtsmaterie bildet. In der Philosophie befasst sich vor allem die Ethik mit der wie auch immer definierten Schuld. Die antiken Tragödien drehen sich um verschuldetes wie unverschuldetes Unheil. In der Geschichtswissenschaft wird etwa die Frage nach der Kriegsschuld seit jeher intensiv erörtert. In der Wissenschaftsgeschichte wird über die mit wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen einhergehende Schuld disputiert. Soziologie, Kunst- und Kulturwissenschaften befassen sich mit in den heutigen pluralistischen Gesellschaften medial und diskursiv präsenten Formen von Schuld. In der Medizin und in den Naturwissenschaften wird die Quantifizierung und Messbarkeit von Schuld sowie ihr eventueller evolutionärer Vorteil erforscht. Und in der Theologie ist die persönliche Schuld Maßstab für die Beurteilung des Menschen am dies irae. Diese Wissensfelder werden in dem vorliegenden Band miteinander in Beziehung und somit ein fruchtbarer interdisziplinärer Diskurs ins Werk gesetzt.

    Abstract: In der Modewelt und der Popkultur begegnen einem überraschend oft religiöse Symbole, seien es Kreuze auf T-Shirts, Buddha-Figuren auf Handtaschen oder die indische Göttin Kali auf Badeanzügen: Religion auf populärer Kleidung scheint „in Mode“ zu sein. Doch was haben solche Symbole noch mit Religion zu tun? Die Studie entwirft einen religionswissenschaftlichen Zugang zu dieser Rezeption religiöser Symbole in populärkultureller Kleidung, erklärt die komplexen Verbindungen zwischen Religion und Populärkultur und erprobt diese vorgeschlagene Herangehensweise an einer Untersuchung zu Kleidung in der Schweizer Black Metal-Szene.
    Abstract: In fashion and pop culture, one encounters religious symbols surprisingly often, be it crosses on T-shirts, depictions of Buddha on handbags or the colourful goddess Kali on swimsuits. ‘Religion’ on clothing seems to be ‘in vogue’. This book conducts a study of the reception of religious symbols in the field of popular clothing from the perspective of religious studies and tests this approach in an examination of clothing practices in the Swiss black metal scene.

    Abstract: Zombies haben es der Moderne angetan. In William Seabrooks Reisebericht The Magic Island (1929), im Kino George A. Romeros oder als Infizierte in Filmen und Serien jüngeren Datums konfrontieren sie mit der Aporie des Untodes. Die dadurch entstehenden Potenziale diskutiert Peter Schuck an Zusammenhängen, die mit Begriffen wie Haiti, Geste, Apokalypse, Infektion und Gemeinschaft verbunden sind. Der Fokus der Text- und Filmlektüren, etwa zu Passage of Darkness, Night of the Living Dead und 28 Days Later, liegt dabei auf den je unterschiedlichen medialen, diskursiven und politischen Bedingungen und Effekten des zombischen Untodes.     Abstract: In den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten ist die LGBT-Bewegung (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) in einer im Vergleich zu anderen Menschenrechtsbewegungen beispiellosen Geschwindigkeit gewachsen. Phillip M. Ayoub zeichnet die jüngere Geschichte dieser transnationalen Bewegung in Europa nach. Er zeigt, wie das »Coming-out« die marginalisierte Gesellschaftsgruppe ins Zentrum der politischen Debatte rückte und ihr zu längst fälligen Rechten verhalf. Neben der Analyse der von der Bewegung vertretenen Normen steht vor allem die Frage im Zentrum, warum die gesellschaftsrechtliche Anerkennung der LGBT-Minderheiten in den jeweiligen Staaten so unterschiedlich verläuft.

    Abstract: Memory matters. It matters because memory brings the past into the present, and opens it up to the future. But it also matters literally, because memory is mediated materially. Materiality is the stuff of memory. Meaningful objects that we love (or hate) function not only as aide-mémoire but are integral to memory. Drawing on previous scholarship on the interrelation of memory and materiality, this book applies recent theories of new materialism to explore the material dimension of memory in art and popular culture. The book’s underlying premise is twofold: on the one hand, memory is performed, mediated, and stored through the material world that surrounds us; on the other hand, inanimate objects and things also have agency on their own, which affects practices of memory, as well as forgetting.     Abstract: Karneval in Patamban wird im ganzen Dorf gefeiert, ein Tag zum Späße machen. Die Mädchen halten kleine Stiere in der Hand und jagen damit die jungen Männer. Es wird auch getanzt, einen Stierkampf symbolisierend. Die Cargueros der drei Darstellungen von Maria haben besondere Pflichten zu erfüllen. Sie laden Gäste zu sich ein, verteilen Früchte, Tamales und Brot. Auch die Encendedoras der Mariä Empfängnis haben Gäste eingeladen. Sie helfen, die Pflichten zu erfüllen. Am Nachmittag holen die Cargueros von den Feldern Stiere aus Maisstangen ins Dorf. Die Cabildos, die Ältesten des Dorfes, brandmarken sie. Anschließend kämpfen sie miteinander. Dieses Jahr traf man sich im Gehöft des Kene, des Carguero der Mariä Empfängnis, da ihre Kapelle im Kirchhof nicht genutzt werden konnte. Der Karneval endet am Aschermittwoch mit einer Prozession der drei Jesusfiguren und dem Aufbringen eines Aschekreuzes auf der Stirne der Gläubigen.
    Abstract: Carnival in Patamban is celebrated by the whole village. It is a day when people make fun of each other. The girls, with a small wooden bull figure in their hands, hunt the young men. Sometimes they dance thus symbolising a bull fight. The cargueros of the three Virgin Mary figures have special obligations to fulfil these days. They invite people and share with them fruits, tamales and bread. Also, the encendedoras have invited guests. They help them to fulfil their obligations. In the afternoon the cargueros fetch from the fields bull figures made from corn stalks. The cabildos, the elders of the village, brand them. This year people met at the compound of Kene, the carguero of María de la Concepción. Her chapel in the churchyard had fallen to pieces. Carnival ends on Ash Wednesday. In the afternoon, the procession with the three Jesús Nazareno figures is held. Ash Wednesday ends with the marking of an ash cross on the participants' foreheads.

    Abstract: Ein sogenannter "Tippelbruder" oder "Berber" wird von der Autorin auf seinen Wanderungen entlang der Mosel begleitet und befragt. Er erzählt von seinem Verhältnis zu den Ortschaften und ihren Menschen, die er auf seiner Wanderschaft aufsucht oder trifft. Er macht unterschiedliche Erfahrungen, die ihn insgesamt als Lebenskünstler mit Optimismus zeigen. So entsteht ein Bild eines ungewöhnlichen Mannes, zugleich aber auch das einer Region mit seinen Menschen, gesehen mit den Augen eines Postkarten-Wander-Malers.
    Abstract: A homeless man who lives in the Mosel valley wandering along the river talks to the author about his life experiences and life-style. He meets many people in the villages and comes across very different attitudes towards him. He appears as a man content with the life he leads, and he gives us his view of the people and scenery in the Mosel valley, seen through the eyes of an itinerant post-card artist.

    Abstract: Basierend auf Mythen und Legenden erzählt der Film auf verschiedene Weise die Geschichte der peruanischen Anden und des Dorfes Balta, einer Siedlung der Kashinawa, und seiner Bevölkerung. Zugleich gibt er Einblicke in das Alltagsleben (Brandrodung, Jagd, Nahrung) der Kashinawa. Es kommen unterschiedliche Erzählansätze (Legenden, im Schulunterricht) zur Anwendung.
    Abstract: Based on myths and legends, the film shows different ways of telling the history of the Cashinahua people and of Balta village in the Peruvian Andes. We also learn about everyday culture (slash-and-burn agriculture, hunting, food). Different strategies of telling history and stories (legends, school lessons) are applied.

    Abstract: Anthropologist/filmmaker Barbara Keifenheim studied the Kashinawa (Huni Kuin) of the Peruvian lowlands from 1977 until 1996. In this film, co-directed by Patrick Deshayes and originally made in a German and French version in 1984 using older film excerpts from a film from 1951 by Harald Schultz, the Indians speak about their cultural values, cosmology, rituals and their encounters with the Whites' world. Images of everyday life and work in metal-production from Germany are shown to the Indians and interpreted by them. Film images appear to them like their drug visions. The English version of 2009 contains concluding statements about cultural change in the Indians' world since the 1980s. (German subtitles, see film C 12693)

    Abstract: Der experimentelle Dokumentarfilm reflektiert Besonderheiten eines Aufeinandertreffens westafrikanischer und europäisch/westlicher Kultur. Er stellt Westeuropäer vor, die einige Jahre in Westafrika lebten, zeigt Straßensituationen, erzählt Begebenheiten, sammelt Materialien und Eindrücke von den Reisen der Filmemacherin nach Ghana, Benin und in den Senegal. Gisa, die mit ihrer Tochter Madita mehrere Jahre in Burkina Faso lebte, beschreibt Momente der Nähe und Fremdheit dort. Vertrautes zeigt sich im fremden Umfeld manchmal grotesk, manchmal poetisiert. Bilder und Motive möglicher Faszination und Sehnsucht nach dem Anderen kontrastieren mit der Frage, ob ein Kontakt zur Fremde überhaupt möglich ist. Der Film ist auf Super-8 und Mini-DV gedreht. Durch die Materialwirkungen und den Wechsel von Momentaufnahmen und aus der Zeit gehobenen bildhaften Einstellungen entsteht gelegentlich ein schwebender Zustand zwischen Vorstellung und konkretem Alltag.
    Abstract: The experimental documentary reflects the encounter between West African and European/Western culture, introducing Europeans who lived in West Africa for some years. It shows situations on the streets, tells stories, collects materials and impressions from journeys of the film maker to Ghana, Benin and Senegal. Gisa, who lived with her daughter Madita in Burkina Faso for several years, recalls moments of closeness and foreignness. The most trusted things can sometimes appear grotesque, sometimes poeticized in a foreign environment. Images and stories of a potential fascination and longing for the Other contrast with the question whether a contact to the foreign is possible at all. The film was shot on super-8 and mini-DV. The material effects and the alternation between vivid shots and quasi timeless picturesque scenes occasionaly create a blur between imagination and plain everyday life.

    Abstract: Wie ist mein Blick durch Weißsein geprägt? Welche Rolle spielt der koloniale Blick als weißer Wahrnehmungsmodus und als visuelle, insbesondere fotografische Geste im ‚Spektakel des Weißseins’? In der vorliegenden Arbeit beschäftige ich mich mit visuellen Konstruktionen und Repräsentationen rassifizierter und geschlechtlich kodierter Differenz im deutschen Kontext mit dem Fokus auf der kritischen Reflektion von Weißsein. Im ersten Kapitel beschäftige ich mich mit systematischen Elementen des kolonialen Blicks anhand der Analyse beispielhafter Darstellungen aus dem 21. und dem 16. Jahrhundert. Die Zentrierung der Darstellungspraxen auf Weißsein und die intersektionale Verquickung geographischer und sexueller, rassifizierter und geschlechtlicher Konnotationen steht im Fragefokus. Inwiefern sind koloniale Blicke weiße Wahrnehmungen und Wahr-Nehmungen, im Sinne von ‚wahr machen’ und naturalisieren? Die ‚moderne’, ‚aufgeklärte’, europäische Blickprägung und ihre ideologischen, wie medialen Einschreibungen in die Expansion breitenwirksamer visueller Diskurse, in Fotografien, Ausstellungen und Werbung, bis Ende des 19. Jahrhundert sind Thema des zweiten Kapitels. Wie plausiblisiert sich die Normativität der eurozentrischen Weltsicht und der Mythos der objektiven, wissenschaftlichen, fotografischen ‚Wahrheit’? Im dritten Kapitel stehen die Funktionen der deutschen Kolonialmythologie, die das Kaiserreich als Nation weißer, zivilisierter, überlegener Männer und Frauen imaginierte, im Vordergrund. Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Kolonialismus fokussiert sich auf die Zeit von der sogenannten „Kongo-Konferenz“ in Berlin 1884 zu den genozidären Kolonialkriegen der deutschen „Schutztruppen“ in Namibia und Tanzania. Zum Abschluß wende ich mich wieder der Gegenwart zu und versuche einen Ausblick zu formulieren. Was sind die (post)kolonialen, weißen Mythen der Gegenwart?
    Abstract: How is my gaze shaped by whiteness and the history of the european expansion, racism and colonialism? How are visual habits functioning within the 'spectacle of whiteness'? Focussing on the critical reflection of whiteness and racism this thesis deals with visual constructions and racialised and gendered representations. The first chapter deals with the systematic aspects of the colonial gaze. The second chapter deals with european and eurocentric formation of photographic gazes, it's normativity and seeming evidence. The third chapter analyses german colonial mythology routed in the 19th century. Finally the question is posed how (post)colonial, white myths (still) shape what we perceive as 'real' and true.

    Abstract: Laboya liegt an der Südküste Westsumbas (Ostindonesien), einer Insel, die aufgrund ihrer Lage nie von der Hindu-Kultur beeinflusst worden war. Erst zu Beginn des 20. Jhs. wurden Christentum und Islam auf Sumba eingeführt. Noch heute glauben die Einwohner an den Einfluß der Ahnen. Die Lebenden müssen sie nähren und für sie beten, um ihren Segen zu erhalten. Padu und Nyale bilden die beiden Hauptzeremonien im Jahreskreis dieser Ackerbaukultur (Reis, Mais und Maniok). Padu bedeutet "Bitterkeit", der Oktober steht im Zeichen von Padu und Hala (Hitze), läßt Menschen erkranken, Tier und Pflanze darben. Die Padu-Zerermonie dient der Vertreibung dieser Übel, beschwört das lebensspendende Wasser und erneuert die sozialen Beziehungen. Gleichzeitig dient sie der Vorbereitung von Nyale, der Regenzeremonie im Februar, dem Beginn der Reispflanzung. Das Erscheinen der Nyale-Meereswürmer als Vorboten der kommenden schweren Niederschläge bezeugt den Segen der Ahnen. (Forschungsfilmaufnahmen minderer technischer Qualität).     Abstract: Laboya is situated on the southern coast of West Sumba (Eastern Indonesia), an island never introduced to Hindu culture. Not until the beginning of the 20th century did Christianity and then Islam reach the Sumbanese. Even nowadays most people say they believe in Marapu, a term referring to their ancestors. It is the task of the living to nourish and pray to ancestral spirits in order to receive their blessings. Padu and Nyale are the two ceremonies marking the annual agricultural cycle (rice, maize and cassava). Padu means bitterness. October is a month of 'bitterness' and 'heat' (hala) causing people to fall ill, and preventing animals and plants from thriving. The Padu ceremony is to get rid of these ills, to let the life-giving water flow again and to renew social bonds. The Padu ritual also serves to prepare the rain rituals of Nyale which take place in February, when the rice planting season is re-opened. During the Nyale rituals the arrival of Nyale seaworms (announcing heavy rainfall) means the ancestral blessing has been given. (Research footage of low technical quality).     Abstract: This film is a portrait of the filmmaker's uncle, the patriarch Haj Taghi, an old bazaar shoe merchant in Borujerd, Western Iran. After a car accident he had to hand over business to his sons. They talk about the economic and family problems, many of them resulting from the changes from traditional to modern values in contemporary Iranian society.

Kava ist nicht nur ein überkommenes Relikt, es wird mehr und mehr zum identitätsstiftenden Symbol vieler Pazifikinsulaner. Bei einer Schale Kava, das aus der Wurzel eines Pfeffergewächses gewonnen wird, schließt man Freundschaft oder empfängt seine Gäste. Heute wird Kava vor allem außerhalb ritueller Anlässe konsumiert und für den globalen Markt produziert. Für viele Pazifikinsulaner aber wird Kava immer eines bleiben - der Trank der Götter.
    Abstract: This film, set in Vanuatu, Fiji and Samoa, gives insight into Kava rituals as they are carried out today. But Kava is more than just a cultural relic, it is becoming a symbol of identity for many Pacific Islanders as for Oceania as a whole. Through Kava, a drink made from the root of a pepperplant, friendships are formed, visitors welcomed, and chiefly authority sanctioned. Today, Kava is increasingly bought, sold and consumed within non-ritual contexts. It is extracted, packaged, and produced for global markets. But for many Pacific Islanders, Kava will always remain: the drink of the Gods.

    Abstract: Das Leben der Moorkolonisten, die abseits der Wasserstraßen in den abgelegenen Mooren Ostfrieslands siedelten, war erbärmlich. Der desolate Zustand der Wege schnitt sie im Herbst und Winter von der Außenwelt ab, vor ihren Hütten türmte sich übermannshoch das Moor auf. Die lebensfeindlichen Bedingungen werden greifbar, wenn sich die Protagonisten an die kleinen Kolonistenhäuser erinnern, in denen sie Tür an Tür mit Schaf und Ziege lebten; wenn sie berichten, wie mühselig es war, das Moor Meter für Meter abzutorfen und das neue Land zu kultivieren; wenn sie uns zeigen, wo immer wieder die Pferde eingesackt sind, wenn sie die mit Torf beladenen Wagen aus dem Moor ziehen sollten. Bei diesen Erzählern handelt es sich um die letzte Generation derjenigen, die wie ihre Vorfahren direkt am Moor siedelten und einen Eindruck davon hinterlassen können, was es heißt, ein Kolonist zu sein.
    Abstract: The life of the moor colonists who settled beyond the waterways in the outlying moors of East Frisia was miserable. The desolate condition of the paths isolated them from the outside world in fall and winter, in front of their huts the moor towered head-high. These hostile conditions become tangible when the protagonists remember their small houses where they lived door to door with sheep and goats, when they tell how arduous it was to harvest the peat meter by meter and to cultivate the land; when they show us the places where the horses used to be bogged down with their turf loaded waggons. The protagonists belong to the last generation of settlers who colonized the moor like their ancestors and who can give us an idea of what it means to be a colonist.

    Abstract: Das Unternehmen erscheint ungeheuerlich: Spatenstich für Spatenstich, Meter für Meter, Tag für Tag, Jahr für Jahr gruben sich die ostfriesischen Fehntjer ins unendliche Moor, um es dann auf ihren kleinen Torfschiffen in die nahegelegenen Städte zu verschiffen; von dort brachten sie Stallmist, Fäkalien der Städter und Sand aus der Ems zur Kultivierung der abgetorften Moorfläche mit. Alles per Hand. Die Kanäle wurden zu den Straßen Ostfrieslands und die Schiffe mit ihren Besatzungen zum Inbegriff von Mobilität, zum weithin sichtbaren Symbol für Beweglichkeit und Freiheit. Im Film wird dieses Bild zurechtgerückt: Die Fehntjer präsentieren sich in ihrem unermüdlichen Kampf als Idealtyp der Menschheitsgeschichte - gegen jede Unbill ankämpfend machen sie sich ihre Umwelt zur Heimat - nach ihrem Bilde. Eine Landschaft, die sich uns heute adrett, aufgeräumt und als "typischer" ostfriesischer Naturraum präsentiert, erscheint so in einem anderen Licht.
    Abstract: The operation seems monstrous: spade by spade, meter by meter, day after day, year after year the East Frisian 'Fehntjer' dug the endless moor to ship the peat to nearby towns in their little peat ships. In order to cultivate the cutaway bogs, they brought back dung, town-dwellers' faeces and sand from the river Ems. All by hand. The channels became the East Frisian roads, and along with them the ships and their crew became the quintessence of mobility, the evident symbol of freedom. In the film this impression is adjusted. In their tireless struggle the 'Fehntjer' present themselves as the ideal type of mankind. Fighting against any rigours, they make their land their homeland - formed after their image. A landscape that nowadays seems to be smart, neat, tidy, the "typical" East Frisian natural landscape appears in another light.

    Abstract: Die Moore Ostfrieslands sind abgetorft - das Land präsentiert sich kultiviert. Dennoch: Nahezu alle Ostfriesen verbindet noch immer eine ganz besondere Beziehung zu dem Stoff, der ihr Land einstmals meterhoch bedeckte. Ob Liebe oder Hass: Das Moor hat die Mentalität der Ostfriesen geprägt wie sonst vielleicht nur das Wasser. Auch wenn der Kampf mit dem Moor keine Existenzen mehr beeinflusst, so sind die Spuren, die er hinterlassen hat, doch weiterhin sichtbar: In den Tradierungen, den Geschichten, Legenden und Erinnerungen der Menschen. Und vor allem in den Symbolen des Torfgrabens: Der "Tweekrieger", der "Sticker" und die Torfkarre. Diese Arbeitsgeräte rufen bei wohl jedem Ostfriesen mit starken Emotionen besetzte Assoziationen hervor. Bei diesem Filmprojekt stehen die Erinnerungen an eine Arbeit im Mittelpunkt, die noch vor wenigen Jahrzehnten das Leben der Ostfriesen bestimmte wie keine andere.
    Abstract: East Friesland's moors nowadays are cutaway bogs. The landscape is cultivated. Still, most East Frisians have a special connection with the stuff that once covered their land meters high. For love or hate: the moor has shaped the East Frisians' mentality like probably only the water was able to. Even if the rigours with the moor do not influence any livelihoods, the traces it left are still visible: in the traditions, stories, legends, peoples' memories. And above all in the symbols of cutting peat: the "Tweekieger", the "Sticker" and the peat kart. For their associations, these tools still arouse strong emotions in any East Frisian. This film project focuses on the memories of a work that only a few decades ago determined the lives of East Frisians like no other.

    Abstract: Sorbe ist, wer sich als Sorbe bekennt - so die offizielle Definition der sorbischen Minderheit, festgeschrieben in der sächsischen Landesverfassung. Weder Abstammung noch Sprache sind entscheidend: Was zählt, ist das Zugehörigkeitsgefühl, die Selbst-Definition. "Sorbe sein - Sorbe bleiben" erzählt aus der Sicht "bekennender" sorbischer Jugendlicher aus Bautzen davon, was es eigentlich bedeutet, sorbisch zu sein. Die sorbische Sprache zu sprechen, an der sorbischen Kultur teilzuhaben, der katholische Glaube, der Wunsch und die Schwierigkeit, einen sorbischen Partner zu finden - all das sind Bausteine einer sorbischen Identität, die alles andere als einheitlich ist und die sich neben und innerhalb der deutschen Identität behaupten muss. Für die Jugendlichen geht "sorbisch sein" weit darüber hinaus, an sorbischen Traditionen wie dem Osterreiten oder einer Trachtentanzgruppe teilzunehmen - ein sorbisches Kabarett oder eine sorbische Jugendgruppe, die Feten, Veranstaltungen und der Austausch mit anderen Minderheiten, zeugen davon.
    Abstract: A Sorb is anybody who claims to be a Sorb - thus the official definition of the Sorbian minority, as it is codified in the Saxonian Constitution. Neither genealogy nor language matter, decisive is the feeling of belonging, the self-definition. The film tells its story from the angle of Sorbian youths from Bautzen, telling us what it means to be a Sorb. To speak the Sorbian language, to share the Sorbian culture, the Catholic faith, the desire and difficulty to find a Sorbian spouse - all these are elements of a Sorbian identity which is all but uniform and has to prove itself inside the German identity. For Sorbian youths "to be a Sorb" goes far beyond practising the Sorbian traditions like Easter riding or attending folklore groups - a Sorbian cabaret, a Sorbian youth group, their parties, events and the cooperation with other minorities bear witness to this.

Padu und Nyale bilden die beiden Hauptzeremonien im Jahreskreis dieser Ackerbaukultur (Reis, Mais und Maniok). Padu bedeutet "Bitterkeit", der Oktober steht im Zeichen von Padu und Hala (Hitze), läßt Menschen erkranken, Tier und Pflanze darben. Die Padu-Zerermonie dient der Vertreibung dieser Übel, beschwört das lebensspendende Wasser und erneuert die sozialen Beziehungen. Gleichzeitig dient sie der Vorbereitung von Nyale, der Regenzeremonie im Februar, dem Beginn der Reispflanzung. Das Erscheinen der Nyale-Meereswürmer als Vorboten der kommenden schweren Niederschläge bezeugt den Segen der Ahnen. (Forschungsfilmaufnahmen minderer technischer Qualität).     Abstract: Laboya is situated on the southern coast of West Sumba (Eastern Indonesia), an island never introduced to Hindu culture. Not until the beginning of the 20th century did Christianity and then Islam reach the Sumbanese. Even nowadays most people say they believe in Marapu, a term referring to their ancestors. It is the task of the living to nourish and pray to ancestral spirits in order to receive their blessings. Padu and Nyale are the two ceremonies marking the annual agricultural cycle (rice, maize and cassava). Padu means bitterness. October is a month of 'bitterness' and 'heat' (hala) causing people to fall ill, and preventing animals and plants from thriving. The Padu ceremony is to get rid of these ills, to let the life-giving water flow again and to renew social bonds. The Padu ritual also serves to prepare the rain rituals of Nyale which take place in February, when the rice planting season is re-opened. During the Nyale rituals the arrival of Nyale seaworms (announcing heavy rainfall) means the ancestral blessing has been given.     Abstract: Bei den Wana, die als Halbnomaden im indonesischen Regenwald leben, ist Indo Pino eine allseits anerkannte Schamanin. Ihr Neffe konvertierte vor einigen Monaten zum Christentum und predigt nun apokalyptische Visionen. Für ihn steht fest: wenn diese Visionen von Gott stammen, müssen die Visionen der Schamanen von Satan kommen. Ausgehend von der christlichen Idee der Erbsünde, werden die Begriffe "gut" und "böse" überdacht und die traditionellen Heilmethoden der Schamanen stark angegriffen. Vor unseren Augen findet ein Kampf zweier Glaubenswelten statt. (vgl. Film C 12437 "Indo Pino")
    Abstract: Among the Wana people, semi-nomads from the Indonesian forest, Indo Pino is a shaman recognized by everybody. Her nephew, who is also a shaman's son, converted to Christianity some months ago and is now preaching apocalyptic visions. And for him, if these visions come from God, the visions of the shamans inevitably must come from Satan. Through the Christian concepts of sin and original fault, good and evil notions are revised. The traditional healing practices of the shamans are heavily under attack. Under our eyes a fight between two worlds of religious belief is taking place. (see also film C 12437 "Indo Pino")

    Abstract: Der Hamat'sa (oder "Kannibalentanz") ist die wichtigste und oft dargestellte Zeremonie der Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) von British Colombia. Der Film geht der Geschichte der ethnologischen Darstellung des Tanzes und der Rückgabe des Archivmaterials an die Ureinwohner-Gemeinden nach. Er zeigt, welch unterschiedliche Einstellungen zu dieser Geschichte bestehen und wie sie die heutigen Aufführungen bestimmen. Mit Blick auf die eigene Feldforschung thematisiert der Autor Fragen der ethnographischen Repräsentation sowie der Beziehung zwischen Forscher und Forschungssubjekten.
    Abstract: The Hamat'sa (or "Cannibal Dance") is the most important and highly represented ceremony of the Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) people of British Columbia. This film traces the history of anthropological depictions of the dance and, through the return of archival materials to a Native community, presents some of the ways in which diverse attitudes toward this history inform current presentations of the Hamat'sa. With a secondary focus on the filmmaker's fieldwork experience, the film also attends specifically to the ethics of ethnographic representation and to the renegotiation of relationships between anthropologists and their research subjects.
