    Abstract: "Postcolonialism refers not only to the historical epoch after the end of the colonial era, but also to a theoretical concept for the analysis of power relations. In German-speaking theology, this concept has so far received little attention. In the bilingual volume Postcolonialism, theology and the construction of the other, scholars of all theological disciplines, including religious studies, explore the heuristic possibilities that postcolonialism provides for their subject. In particular, the question is how "the other" is constructed as the counterpart of a "we." In times of global migration and growing right-wing extremism, theology must remain capable to offer answers to the urgent questions of the present.
    Abstract: Postkolonialismus bezeichnet nicht nur die historische Epoche nach dem Ende der Kolonialzeit, sondern auch ein theoretisches Konzept zur Analyse von Herrschaftsverhältnissen. In der deutschsprachigen Theologie wurde dieses Konzept bisher wenig beachtet. Im zweisprachigen Sammelband Postkolonialismus, Theologie und die Konstruktion des Anderen erkunden Vertreter aller theologischen Disziplinen einschließlich der Religionswissenschaft die heuristischen Möglichkeiten, die der Postkolonialismus für ihr Fach bietet. Es geht dabei insbesondere um die Frage, wie „der Andere“ als Gegenüber eines „Wir“ konstruiert wird. Gerade in Zeiten globaler Migration und erstarkenden Rechtsextremismus muss Theologie sprachfähig bleiben, um den drängenden Fragen der Gegenwart Antwortangebote bieten zu können.

    Abstract: This book is a comprehensive treatment of the ancient prophetic phenomenon as it comes to us through biblical, Near Eastern, and Greek sources. Once a distinctly biblical concept, prophecy is today acknowledged as yet another form of divination and a phenomenon that can be found all over the ancient Eastern Mediterranean. Even Greek oracle, traditionally discussed separately from biblical and Mesopotamian prophecy, is essentially part of the same picture. The book gives an up-to-date presentation of textual sources, whether cuneiform tablets from Mesopotamia, the Hebrew Bible, Greek inscriptions, or ancient historians, the number of which has increased substantially in recent times. In addition, the book includes comparative essays on topics such as prophetic ecstasy; temples as venues of prophetic performances; prophets and political rulers; and the prophets’ gender which can be either male, female, or non-gendered. The book argues for a common category of ancient Eastern Mediterranean prophecy, even though the fragmentary and secondary nature of the sources allows only a restricted view to it. The ways prophetic divination manifests itself in ancient sources depend not only on the socio-religious position of the prophets but also on the genre and purpose of the sources. The book shows that, even though the view of the ancient prophetic landscape is restricted by the fragmentary and secondary nature of the sources, it is possible to reconstruct essential features of prophetic divination

    Abstract: "The Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria are exceptional for the copresence among them of three religious traditions: Islam, Christianity, and the indigenous orisa-religion. In this strongly comparative study, at once historical and anthropological, Peel explores the intertwined character of the three religions and the dense imbrication of religion in all other aspects of Yoruba history up to the present. For over 400 years, the Yoruba have straddled two geocultural spheres: one reaching north over the Sahara to the world of Islam, the other linking them to the Euro-American world via the Atlantic. These two external spheres were the source of contrasting cultural influences, notably those emanating from the world religions. Moreover, the Yoruba not only imported Islam and Christianity; they exported their own orisa-religion to the New World. Before the voluntary modern diaspora that has brought many Yoruba to Euro-America, tens of thousands had been sold as slaves to the New World, bringing with them the worship of the orisa. Along the way, Peel not only offers deep insight into such important contemporary themes as religious conversion, new religious movements, relations between world religions, the conditions of religious violence, the transnational flows of contemporary religion, and the interplay between tradition and the demands of an ever-changing present but also makes a major theoretical contribution to the anthropology of world religions."--Provided by publisher.

    Abstract: "In some religious countries, churches have drafted constitutions, restricted abortion, and controlled education. In others, church influence on public policy is far weaker. Why? Nations under God argues that where religious and national identities have historically fused, churches gain enormous moral authority--and covert institutional access. These powerful churches then shape policy in backrooms and secret meetings instead of through open democratic channels such as political parties or the ballot box. Through an in-depth historical analysis of six Christian democracies that share similar religious profiles yet differ in their policy outcomes--Ireland and Italy, Poland and Croatia, and the United States and Canada--Anna Grzymała-Busse examines how churches influenced education, abortion, divorce, stem cell research, and same-sex marriage. She argues that churches gain the greatest political advantage when they appear to be above politics. Because institutional access is covert, they retain their moral authority and their reputation as defenders of the national interest and the common good. Nations under God shows how powerful church officials in Ireland, Canada, and Poland have directly written legislation, vetoed policies, and vetted high-ranking officials. It demonstrates that religiosity itself is not enough for churches to influence politics--churches in Italy and Croatia, for example, are not as influential as we might think--and that churches allied to political parties, such as in the United States, have less influence than their notoriety suggests"--

While the two have come apart through the process of secularization, secularism is challenged today by the return of public religion. This cogent analysis unravels the nature of the connection, disconnection, and attempted reconnection between religion and politics in the West.In a comparison of Western Europe and North America, Christianity and Islam, Joppke advances far-reaching theoretical, historical, and comparative-political arguments.     Abstract: Pacifism is popular. Many hold that war is unnecessary, since peaceful means of resolving conflict are always available, if only we had the will to look for them. Or they believe that war is wicked, essentially involving hatred of the enemy and carelessness of human life. Or they posit the absolute right of innocent individuals not to be deliberately killed, making it impossible to justify war in practice. Peace, however, is not simple. Peace for some can leave others at peace to perpetrate mass atrocity. What was peace for the West in 1994 was not peace for the Tutsis of Rwanda. Therefore, against the virus of wishful thinking, anti-military caricature, and the domination of moral deliberation by rights-talk In Defence of War asserts that belligerency can be morally justified, even though tragic and morally flawed. Recovering the Christian tradition of reflection running from Augustine to Grotius, this book affirms aggressive war in punishment of grave injustice. Morally realistic in adhering to universal moral principles, it recognises that morality can trump legality, justifying military intervention even in transgression of positive international law-as in the case of Kosovo. Less cynical and more empirically realistic about human nature than Hobbes, it holds that nations desire to be morally virtuous and right, and not only to be safe and fat. And aspiring to practical realism, it argues that love and the doctrine of double effect can survive combat; and that the constraints of proportionality, while real, are nevertheless sufficiently permissive to encompass Britain`s belligerency in 1914-18. Finally, in a painstaking analysis of the Iraq invasion of 2003, In Defence of War culminates in an account of how the various criteria of just war should be thought together. It also concludes that, all things considered, the invasion was justified.

    Abstract: In the era of 'post-Christendom', how can church as a sociological reality be switched on to the destructive dangers, yet constructive possibilities, of 'power' flowing in and around its community? Attuned to the current distrust of church power, this book creatively works out responses that could turn painful censure into a revisioning of church power relations, helped by neglected critical studies. The approach exposes a complexity to power, and filters that insight into a theology of church. Much attention is paid in the book to the relevance to a religious community of post-modern philosopher Michel Foucault and of recent feminism.The topic of power has universal importance in the study of religion, though the response to analysis and critique in this book is drawn specifically from Christian sources. Kearsley concludes with an exploration for a future renovated, self-critical, authentic and growing community, sensitive to power while remaining in line with classic Christianity.

    Abstract: Den Wechselwirkungen zwischen Protestantismus und neuen sozialen Bewegungen in den von Dynamik und Liberalisierung geprägten 1960er und 70er Jahren widmen sich die Beiträge dieses Bandes. Untersucht wird die gegenseitige Beeinflussung anhand verschiedener Gruppierungen (Studenten- oder Frauenbewegung, osteuropäische Reformbewegung), Personen (Helmut Gollwitzer, Helmut Thielicke, Dorothee Sölle), Strukturen (Kirchen- und Gemeindeaufbau) oder Aktionsformen (Kirchentag, politisches Nachtgebet). Auch die weltweit entstandenen neuen theologischen Entwürfe dieser Zeit, Wechselwirkungen auf internationaler Ebene sowie die sich innerhalb der evangelischen Kirche formierende Gegenbewegung kommen zur Sprache.

    Abstract: "Kulturwissenschaft" lautet das Stichwort, unter dem sich in den letzten Jahren eine intensive Diskussion um das Verständnis der "Geisteswissenschaften" entwickelt hat. In diesem disziplinenübergreifenden Bemühen wird auch der kulturprägenden Kraft von Religion neue Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Religion wird dabei als eine Form symbolischer Kommunikation thematisiert. Die Texte dieses Bandes zielen darauf, zur Präzisierung dieses Rahmenkonzepts beizutragen durch Analysen zu wichtigen Bezugspunkten der gegenwärtigen kulturtheoretischen Diskussion wie I. Kant, F. D. Schleiermacher und E. Cassirer. Weitere Schwerpunkte bilden die Thematisierung der Bedeutung von Metaphern in der religiösen Kommunikation sowie das Verständnis von "Gabe" und "Tausch". Der Zusammenhang von Sinn und Sinnlichkeit wird exemplarisch am Beispiel alltagsästhetischer Stilisierungsprozesse, der Rolle biblischer Texte sowie der symbolischen Dimension der Debatte um Gentechnik untersucht. Die Beiträge zeigen, welches he rmeneutische Potential in der Theologie liegt, wie es für die Arbeit an der kulturwissenschaftlichen Grundlagenproblematik fruchtbar gemacht werden kann und wie die Theologie neu in der gegenwärtigen Wissenschaftsdebatte verortet werden kann.

    Abstract: In einer Zeit, da immer noch Kriege um der Religion willen geführt werden, und sei Religion der Vorwand, überrascht der Blick auf ein Land, in dem Muslime und Christen sowie Angehörige anderer Religionen friedlich miteinander verkehren - zumal auf engstem Raum, nämlich dort, wo die unteren sozialen Schichten der Großstädte Tanzanias aufeinanderstoßen. Es ist alles im Fluß - daher die Begriffe der Interaktion und Konversion im Thema der Arbeit - aber die Beteiligten und Betroffenen machen daraus keinen Aufstand Beeindruckt vom Stellenwert, den Religiösität in den Lebenskonzepten der Bewohner Tanzanias einnimmt, und von der bemerkenswerten Toleranz im Zusammenleben beider Großreligionen fragt der Autor "nach der Bewährung des Nebeneinanders im tanzanischen Alltag, in der Nachbarschaft, zwischen den Familien und in den (nicht selten multireligiösen) Familien selbst. Seine Neugier gilt den sozialen Mechanismen, die Religion zum Verhandlungsgegenstand machen und in denen die Mitwirkenden sich bewähren müssen. Der Blick ist mikrosoziologisch. Diese Arbeit hat eine überzeugende empirische Grundlage. Der Autor kennt die Sprache Swahili und kann mit ihr umgehen, ist also nicht auf fremde Übersetzung angewiesen. Fragen religiöser Konversion nehmen den Hauptteil der Arbeit ein. Der Autor kommt zu dem Schluß, daß der in der europäisch-amerikanischen Debatte verwendete Konversionsbegriff zur Beschreibung von Konversionsprozessen in Tanzania weitgehend untauglich ist. Konversion ist hier keine 'institutionelle Form der Selbstthematisierung' sondern vor allem der 'symbolisch abgestützte Erwerb einer erweiterten Identität, die zuallererst als Gruppenidentität zum Tragen kommt'. Pragmatische Kosten-Nutzen-Abwägungen bestimmen die Entscheidung für einen Wechsel der Religion. Konversion ist 'in erster Linie eine Form der Statuspassage mit dem Ziel der Erlangung einer angeseheneren sozialen Position und der mit ihr verbundenen größeren sozialen Sicherheit'. Deswegen ist auch die Rede von 'Pragmatischer Konversion'.
