    Abstract: Das heutige Angebot an technischen Übersetzungswörterbüchern ist so groß, dass sich auf dem Markt nur die behaupten können, die sich im praktischen Einsatz bewährt haben. Der Ernst hat sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten durchgesetzt und ist zu einem Begriff geworden. Der Ernst bietet eine fachlich fundierte Auswahl von Termini aus folgenden Sparten der Technik und der Naturwissenschaften: theoretische Disziplinen als Grundlage (wie Mathematik, Physik, Chemie), geschlossener Wortschatz der Schwerpunktindustrien, ihrer Rohstoffe, Entwicklungen und Erzeugnisse als Kern (Bergbau, Hüttenwesen, Maschinenbau, Energietechnik, Elektrotechnik, Elektronik mit Daten-, Kommunikations- und Regelungstechnik, Bau- und Verkehrswesen), von den wichtigsten Branchen der Leichtindustrie (Textil, Glas, Holz, Papier, Leder, Gummi, Druckindustrie) ergänzt. Geboten werden auch die wichtigsten Akronyme und Abkürzungen. Die lexikografische Gestaltung der Bände folgt den über Jahrzehnten bewährten Grundsätzen der gesamten Reihe, die Termini mit Fachgebietsangaben, Sacherläuterungen und Synonymen zu versehen und dem Benutzer so eine sachliche Einordnung der Begriffe und die Wahl der richtigen Übersetzung zu ermöglichen. Querverweise sind weitgehend vermieden. Besonders benutzerfreundlich sind die übersichtliche Typografie und das handliche Format. Die Arbeit an der Reihe wird ständig fortgeführt.

    Abstract: This open access textbook introduces and defines digital humanism from a diverse range of disciplines. Following the 2019 Vienna Manifesto, the book calls for a digital humanism that describes, analyzes, and, most importantly, influences the complex interplay of technology and humankind, for a better society and life, fully respecting universal human rights. The book is organized in three parts: Part I “Background” provides the multidisciplinary background needed to understand digital humanism in its philosophical, cultural, technological, historical, social, and economic dimensions. The goal is to present the necessary knowledge upon which an effective interdisciplinary discourse on digital humanism can be founded. Part II “Digital Humanism – a System’s View” focuses on an in-depth presentation and discussion of the main digital humanism concerns arising in current digital systems. The goal of this part is to make readers aware and sensitive to these issues, including e.g. the control and autonomy of AI systems, privacy and security, and the role of governance. Part III “Critical and Societal Issues of Digital Systems” delves into critical societal issues raised by advances of digital technologies. While the public debate in the past has often focused on them separately, especially when they became visible through sensational events the aim here is to shed light on the entire landscape and show their interconnected relationships. This includes issues such as AI and ethics, fairness and bias, privacy and surveillance, platform power and democracy. This textbook is intended for students, teachers, and policy makers interested in digital humanism. It is designed for stand-alone and for complementary courses in computer science, or curricula in science, engineering, humanities and social sciences. Each chapter includes questions for students and an annotated reading list to dive deeper into the associated chapter material.     Abstract: Weder in der Technikphilosophie noch in der technischen Bildung besteht Übereinkunft hinsichtlich der Verwendung des Begriffs Technik. Da verwundert es nicht, dass auch die empirische Erforschung des Technikbegriffs von Kindern und Jugendlichen ein Forschungsdesiderat darstellt. Im Rahmen der hier vorgelegten Arbeit soll diesem Desiderat nachgegangen werden. Mittels Alltagssprachlichem Struktur-Lege-Spiel und Fragebogen wird untersucht, welche subjektiven Vorstellungen Kinder und Jugendliche bezüglich des Begriffs Technik zum Ausdruck bringen und wie stabil diese Begriffe sind. Die Aussagen der Kinder und Jugendlichen werden mittels strukturierender Inhaltsanalyse ausgewertet. Im Zentrum steht dabei das entwickelte Kategoriensystem, mit dem die Technikbegriffe aus den kindlichen bzw. jugendlichen Aussagen erfasst werden. Zusammenfassend lässt sich festhalten, dass keine typischen Technikbegriffe aus dem Datenmaterial herausgearbeitet werden können. Die Technikbegriffe der befragten Kinder und Jugendlichen unterscheiden sich stark. Allerdings kann gezeigt werden, dass die Kinder und Jugendlichen zum Teil scharfsinnige Gedanken über Technik zum Ausdruck bringen

    Abstract: A proposal that we think about digital technologies such as machine learning not in terms of artificial intelligence but as artificial communication. Algorithms that work with deep learning and big data are getting so much better at doing so many things that it makes us uncomfortable. How can a device know what our favorite songs are, or what we should write in an email? Have machines become too smart? In Artificial Communication, Elena Esposito argues that drawing this sort of analogy between algorithms and human intelligence is misleading. If machines contribute to social intelligence, it will not be because they have learned how to think like us but because we have learned how to communicate with them. Esposito proposes that we think of “smart” machines not in terms of artificial intelligence but in terms of artificial communication. To do this, we need a concept of communication that can take into account the possibility that a communication partner may be not a human being but an algorithm—which is not random and is completely controlled, although not by the processes of the human mind. Esposito investigates this by examining the use of algorithms in different areas of social life. She explores the proliferation of lists (and lists of lists) online, explaining that the web works on the basis of lists to produce further lists; the use of visualization; digital profiling and algorithmic individualization, which personalize a mass medium with playlists and recommendations; and the implications of the “right to be forgotten.” Finally, she considers how photographs today seem to be used to escape the present rather than to preserve a memory.

    Abstract: Hacker und Haecksen zählen zur Avantgarde der Computerisierung. Seit den späten 1970er-Jahren bildeten sie sich in der Bundesrepublik und in der DDR zu eigensinnigen ComputernutzerInnen mit einschlägigem Wissen heraus. Sie eigneten sich das Medium spielerisch an, schufen Kontakträume und brachten sich so aktiv in den Prozess der Computerisierung ein. Durch ihre Grenzüberschreitungen zeigten sie dabei Chancen und Risiken der Digitalisierung auf. Julia Gül Erdogan geht der Entstehung der Hackerkulturen in Ost- und Westdeutschland nach. Sie analysiert, wie deren teils subversive Praktiken Machtgefüge in Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft herausforderten. Zugleich verdeutlicht die Arbeit Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der frühen sub- und gegenkulturellen Computernutzung in den beiden deutschen Teilstaaten.

    Abstract: In Keeping autonomous driving alive, Göde Both studies the relationships between researchers and artefacts held together by contested visions. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in a pioneering research project in Germany, he argues we can make sense of technological visions only if we simultaneously grasp the role of care, gender, and narrative in sustaining technological research.
