    Abstract: In the first part this book investigates the changing paradigms that determine the evolving approaches to religious matters during the nineteenth century, providing readers with a sense of the fundamental changes at the time. Section two considers human nature and the nature of religion. It explores a range of categories rising to prominence in the course of the nineteenth century, and influencing the way religion in general, and Christianity in particular, were conceived. Part three focuses on the intellectual, cultural, and social developments of the time, while part four looks at Christianity and the arts-a major area in which Christian ideas, stories, and images were used, adapted, changes, and challenged during the nineteenth century. Christianity was radically pluralized in the nineteenth century, and the fifth section is dedicated to 'Christianity and Christianities'.     Abstract: = Klappentext: Mit Beispielen aus Kultur, Religion, Geschichte, Literatur und Ökonomie beleuchten Christina von Braun und Bettina Mathes die Beziehung zwischen den kulturellen Vorstellungen von Weiblichkeit und Männlichkeit im Islam und in den Traditionen der anderen monotheistischen Weltreligionen. Die mit Geschlechtervorstellungen aufgeladenen Bilder und Stereotype des »Orients« erweisen sich bei genauer Analyse als Projektionen des westlichen Subjekts. Der Schleier der muslimischen Frau dient dabei oft als »Leinwand«, auf der diese Wunsch- und Angstvorstellungen sichtbar gemacht und verhandelt werden.Die Forderung nach der Rückkehr zu einer traditionellen Geschlechterordnung gibt es heute in allen drei Weltreligionen; sie sind ein Charakteristikum des Fundamentalismus moderner Glaubensrichtungen. Die Analyse dieses Phänomens eröffnet neue Perspektiven auf den nach wie vor stattfindenden Dialog zwischen den Kulturen. Die Autorinnen wechseln die herkömmliche Perspektive und lenken den Blick auf die gegenseitigen Verstrickungen von Orient und Okzident, deren gemeinsame Geschichte von Anpassungen wie von Abgrenzungen gekennzeichnet ist. Ein Wissen um diese Geschichte eröffnet den Weg für ein gesellschaftliches und kulturelles Miteinander, in dem das Fremde nicht als unvereinbar mit dem Eigenen verstanden wird.

    Abstract: Based on several years of fieldwork in Egypt and Turkey, this book tells the stories of charity providers and volunteers. The book also places their stories within the overall development of Islamic ethics. Muslim charity, Tugal argues, has interacted with Christian and secular Western ethics over the centuries, which themselves have a conflict-ridden and still evolving history. The overall arch that connects all of these distinct elements is (a combined and uneven) liberalization. Liberalization tends to transform care into a cold, calculating, and individualizing set of practices. Caring for the Poor meticulously documents this insidious process in Egypt and Turkey, while also drawing attention to its limits and contradictions (by using the American case to highlight the contested nature of liberalization even in its world leader). However, as historians have shown, charitable actors have intervened in decisive ways in the rise and demise of social formations. Tugal raises the possibility, especially through his study of two controversial Turkish organizations, that Islamic charity might appropriate elements of liberalism to shift the world in a post-liberal direction

    Abstract: In the early twenty-first century it had become a cliche that there was a 'God Gap' between a more religious United States and a more secular Europe. The apparent religious differences between the United States and western Europe continue to be a focus of intense and sometimes bitter debate between three of the main schools in the sociology of religion. According to the influential 'Secularization Thesis', secularization has been an integral part of the processes of modernisation in the Western world since around 1800. For proponents of this thesis, the United States appears as an anomaly and they accordingly give considerable attention to explaining why it is different. For other sociologists, however, the apparently high level of religiosity in the USA provides a major argument in their attempts to refute the Thesis. Secularization and Religious Innovation in the Atlantic World provides a systematic comparison between the religious histories of the United States and western European countries from the eighteenth to the late twentieth century, noting parallels as well as divergences, examining their causes and especially highlighting change over time. This is achieved by a series of themes which seem especially relevant to this agenda, and in each case the theme is considered by two scholars. The volume examines whether American Christians have been more innovative, and if so how far is this explains the apparent 'God Gap'. It goes beyond the simple American/European binary to ask what is 'American' or 'European' in the Christianity of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and in what ways national or regional differences outweigh these commonalities

    Abstract: Obwohl Eremiten im barocken Bayern lange zur Alltagskultur gehörten, ist über ihre Lebens- und Glaubenswelt überraschend wenig bekannt. Dabei lebten in der Zeit zwischen 1600 und 1804 im heutigen Freistaat mehrere Tausend Einsiedler an über 382 Wohnorten. Ausgehend von Einzelschicksalen zeichnet die kulturwissenschaftliche Studie nicht nur die konkrete Lebenswelt der Einsiedler nach, sondern untersucht auch deren Kultur – ihr Handeln, Denken und Fühlen. Die Entwicklung des Eremitentums und die Gründe für das verstärkte Auftreten im Barock unter dem Einfluss theologischer, geistlicher und gesellschaftlicher Strömungen werden herausgearbeitet. Als wesentliche Kontur der emotionalen Einsiedlergemeinschaft ließ sich das mystische Empfinden der inneren Einsamkeit identifizieren. Dieses für die angestrebte Gottesbegegnung notwendige Gefühl unterlag historischen Konjunkturen – ein Grund für das Verbot der Eremiten in der Zeit der Säkularisation. Der methodische Ansatz, historisch beschriebene Emotionen mit Forschungsergebnissen in gegenwärtigen psychologischen Studien zur Einsamkeit zu vergleichen, setzt wichtige Impulse für die erst beginnende kulturhistorische Emotionsforschung. Die beigefügte Karte der nachweisbaren Klausen verdeutlicht die lokale Bedeutung der Waldbrüder.
    Abstract: Methodisch überzeugend ist das Prinzip der Fallbeispiele, das die Fülle des Materials zu strukturieren vermag. Geschichten von Personen, Viten und Wundern, Gnadenorten und Klausen, Kirchen und Kapellen fügen sich so zu einem Gesamtbild, sie leuchten das Thema in seiner Breite und Tiefe aus. Auch bewährte volkskundliche Zugänge bieten besonders präzise Einsichten in den Klausneralltag. So kann etwa das Inventar-Verzeichnis des kargen persönlichen Besitzes und der Klause weit mehr aussagen als Regularien, Gesetze oder Polemiken (S. 225). [...] Von besonderem dokumentarischem Wert ist das „Klausen-Inventar“ im als Kapitel 16 deklarierten „Anhang: Übersicht über die Klausen in Bayern“.     Abstract: If piety, faith, and conviction constitute one side of the religious coin, then imperfection, uncertainty, and ambivalence constitute the other.     Abstract: Among the assumptions interrogated in this volume, edited by Anthony E. Clark, is if Christianity should most accurately be identified as “Chinese” when it displays vestiges of Chinese cultural aesthetics, or whether Chinese Christianity is more indigenous when it is allowed to form its own theological framework. In other words, can theological uniqueness also function as a legitimate Chinese Christian cultural expression in the formation of its own ecclesial identity? Also central to what is explored in this book is how missionary influences, consciously or unconsciously, introduced seeds of independence into the cultural ethos of China’s Christian community. Chinese girls who pushed “the limits of proper behaviour,” for example, added to the larger sense of confidence as China’s Christians began to resist the model of Christianity they had inherited from foreign missionaries.     Abstract: "With the rise of Christianity in the Roman Empire increasing numbers of educated people converted to this new belief. As Christianity did not have its own educational institutions the issue of how to harmonize pagan education and Christian convictions became increasingly pressing. Especially classical poetry, the staple diet of pagan education, was considered to be morally corrupting (due to its deceitful mythological content) and damaging for the salvation of the soul (because of the false gods it advocated). But Christianity recoiled from an unqualified anti-intellectual attitude, while at the same time the experiment of creating an idiosyncratic form of genuinely Christian poetry failed (the sole exception being the poet Commodianus). In The Baptized Muse: Early Christian Poetry as Cultural Authority, Karla Pollmann argues that, instead, Christian poets made creative use of the classical literary tradition, and - in addition to blending it with Judaeo-Christian biblical exegesis exploited poetry's special ability of enhancing communicative effectiveness and impact through aesthetic means. Pollman explores these strategies through a close analysis of a wide range of Christian, and for comparison partly also pagan, writers mainly from the fourth to sixth centuries. She reveals that early Christianity was not a hermetically sealed uniform body, but displays a rich spectrum of possibilities in dealing with the past and a willingness to engage with and adapt the surrounding culture(s), thereby developing diverse and changing responses to historical challenges. By demonstrating throughout that authority is a key in understanding the long denigrated and misunderstood early Christian poets, this book reaches the ground-breaking conclusion that early Christian poetry is an art form that gains its justification by adding cultural authority to Christianity. Thus, in a wider sense it engages with the recently developed interdisciplinary scholarly interest in aspects of religion as cultural phenomena" --

    Abstract: "This book argues that the runaway popularity of Pentecostal Christianity on the Zambian Copperbelt is a result of this religion's capacity to produce novel forms of value realization. A close analysis of the relationships that form in Pentecostal churches reveals that Pentecostal social life is structured around an animating idea - a value - called 'moving by the Spirit.' Moving by the Spirit entails personal advancement both with regard to material prosperity and religious skill or charisma. While moving by the Spirit makes Pentecostalism attractive, it is difficult for Pentecostal believers to balance prosperity against charisma without reproducing divisions in economic status. These divisions undermine the social world of the church by limiting the access of poorer believers to the relationships with their leaders - relationships through which the value of moving by the Spirit is most effectively realized"--Provided by publisher

    Abstract: From its earliest days, Christianity has viewed Judaism and Jews ambiguously. Given its roots within the Jewish community of first-century Palestine, there was much in Judaism that demanded Church admiration and praise; however, as Jews continued to resist Christian truth, there was also much that had to be condemned. Major Christian thinkers of antiquity - while disparaging their Jewish contemporaries for rejecting Christian truth - depicted the Jewish past and future in balanced terms, identifying both positives and negatives. Beginning at the end of the first millennium, an increasingly large Jewish community started to coalesce across rapidly developing northern Europe, becoming the object of intense popular animosity and radically negative popular imagery. The portrayals of the broad trajectory of Jewish history offered by major medieval European intellectual leaders became increasingly negative as well. The popular animosity and the negative intellectual formulations were bequeathed to the modern West, which had tragic consequences in the twentieth century. In this book, Robert Chazan traces the path that began as anti-Judaism, evolved into heightened medieval hatred and fear of Jews, and culminated in modern anti-Semitism.

    Abstract: "Through interviews with Christian and Muslim women in Norway, Spain and the United Kingdom, this book explores intersections between religion, citizenship, gender and feminism. How do religious women think about citizenship, and how do they practice citizenship in everyday life? How important is faith in their lives, and how is religion bound up with other identities such as gender and nationality? What are their views on 'gender equality', women's movements and feminism? The answers offered by this book are complex. Religion can be viewed as both a resource and a barrier to women's participation. The interviewed women talk about citizenship in terms of participation, belonging, love, care, tolerance and respect. Some seek gender equality within their religious communities, while others accept different roles and spaces for women. 'Natural' differences between women and men and their equal value are emphasized more than equal rights. Women's movements are viewed as having made positive contributions to women's status, but interviewees are also critical of claims related to abortion and divorce, and of feminism's allegedly selfish, unwomanly, anti-men and power-seeking stance. In the interviews, Christian privilege is largely invisible and silenced, while Muslim disadvantage is both visible and articulated. By acknowledging and returning to this European perspective and context, the volume engages the historical, theological, philosophical and political dimensions of the term`s development. Scholars of European intellectual history will find this volume timely and relevant."
