    Note: Heinz Sahner ist ein Wissenschaftler, der sich durch Offenheit gegenüber divergierenden Positionen sowie durch Neugierde auf neue Themen und Arbeitsfelder auszeichnete und auszeichnet. Mit den Kenntnissen und Kompetenzen der Kölner Schule ausgestattet, praktizierte er selbst eine Art von phänomenologisch inspirierter Personalführung. Ihm ging es immer um die Sache der Soziologie, nicht um Zuordnungen oder Abgrenzungen; ein Denken mit Geländern war seine Sache nie. Die Vielfalt der Themen und das damit einhergehende Neuansetzen im Verlauf seiner wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn, machte es den Herausgebern nicht gerade einfach, eine Festschrift zu konzipieren, die in ihrer inneren Struktur zu dem zu Ehrenden passt. Nicht um Quantität ging es, sondern um thematische und personelle Verbundenheiten, die in der hiermit vorgelegten Fassung zweifelsohne nur einen Ausschnitt des Möglichen aufzeigen

Damit sind Chancen auf die Verwirklichung von Lebenszielen gemeint, die in einer Gesellschaft als erstrebenswert angesehen werden. "Lebenschancen" ist ein Kompaktbegriff, der genügend abstrakt ist, um diverse Gegenstandsfelder sinnvoll zu bündeln, ohne dabei diffus zu werden. Das lässt die Spannbreite der in dem Buch versammelten Beiträge erkennen: Von der Lebenserwartung in der Antike bis zu den Risiken jugendlicher Spätaussiedler, von den Restriktionen der australischen Migrationspolitik bis zum Wandel der Lebensbedingungen für Frauen in Oberhausen, von der Mediennutzung türkischer Migranten bis zu den Selbstbildern deutscher Spitzenmanager reicht das Spektrum der behandelten Themen.     Note: Der Band dokumentiert die Reichweite der rationalistischen Handlungstheorie und deren Bedeutung für ein heuristisch fruchtbares soziologisches Erklärungsprogramm, das die überkommene Teilung in Mikro- und Makroanalyse überwindet. Dieses Forschungsprogramm wird in einem ersten Schritt wissenschaftslogisch fundiert, wobei der Autor eine realistische Erkenntnishaltung und einen methodologischen Revisionismus verteidigt. Ein zweiter Abschnitt klärt sodann die Frage, in welchem Verhältnis das soziologische Erklärungsprogramm zu ähnlichen Versuchen, insbesondere in der Ökonomik und der politischen Philosophie, steht. Ein dritter Teil zeigt anhand ausgewählter Themen - zur Problematik der Normentstehung, zur Reziprozität, zum Verhältnis von Konsens und Gewalt und mit Hilfe der Untersuchung der Frage, welchen Theoriefortschritt die Wiedervereinigungsdebatte gebracht hat -, die theoriekritische und -integrative Kraft einer handlungstheoretischen Erklärungspraxis. Auf diese Weise wird sichtbar, dass und wie gesellschaftliche Ordnungsbildung und soziale Wandlungsprozesse gleichermaßen vor einem gemeinsamen handlungstheoretischen Hintergrund erklärt werden können

    Note: Die Ungleichheitsforschung befasst sich mit Diskrepanzen zwischen Sein und Sollen: zwischen einem weithin anerkannten Gleichheitsideal und einer davon abweichenden sozialen Wirklichkeit. Zumindest implizit geht sie davon aus, dass die (meisten der) von ihr ermittelten Ungleichheiten als sozial problematisch, mithin veränderungsbedürftig gelten müssen. Diese Annahme ist aber nicht selbstverständlich; zum einen, weil sie auf normativen Prämissen beruht, die nicht nur meist unausgewiesen bleiben, sondern mit empirisch-analytischen Forschungsmethoden auch gar nicht ausweisbar sind; zum anderen, weil bereits ein flüchtiger Blick in die einschlägige normative Theoriebildung zeigt, dass die Frage, welche Gleichheiten (vorrangig) anzustreben und welche Ungleichheiten (vorrangig) zu beseitigen sind, hoch umstritten ist. Es gibt nicht die Gleichheit oder die Ungleichheit, sondern es gibt ganz unterschiedliche Gleichheits- und Ungleichheitsdimensionen, und zwischen diesen Dimensionen bestehen nicht nur zahlreiche Querverbindungen, sondern oft genug auch Zielkonflikte, so dass mehr Gleichheit in einer Hinsicht notwendig mehr Ungleichheit in einer anderen Hinsicht bedeuten würde

    Abstract: Indigenous peoples today are enmeshed in the expanding modern economy, subject to the pressures of both market and government. This book takes indigenous peoples as actors, not victims, as its starting point in analysing this interaction. It assembles a rich diversity of statements, case studies and wider thematic explorations, primarily from North America, and particularly the Cree, the Haudenausaunee (Iroquois) and Chippewa-Ojibwe peoples who straddle the US/Canadian border, but also from South America and the former Soviet Union.     Abstract: Isaiah Berlin's response to the Soviet Union was central to his identity, both personally and intellectually. Born a Russian subject in Riga in 1909, he spoke Russian as a child and witnessed both revolutions in St. Petersburg in 1917, emigrating to the West in 1921. He first returned to Russia in 1945, when he met the writers Anna Akhmatova and Boris Pasternak. These formative encounters helped shape his later work, especially his defense of political freedom and his studies of pre-Soviet Russian thinkers. Never before collected, Berlin's writings about the USSR include his accounts of his famous meetings with Russian writers shortly after the Second World War; the celebrated 1945 Foreign Office memorandum on the state of the arts under Stalin; his account of Stalin's manipulative 'artificial dialectic'; portraits of Osip Mandel´shtam and Boris Pasternak; his survey of Soviet Russian culture written after a visit in 1956; a postscript stimulated by the events of 1989; and more. This collection includes essays that have never been published before, as well as works that are not widely known because they were published under pseudonyms to protect relatives living in Russia. The contents of this book were discussed at a seminar in Oxford in 2003, held under the auspices of the Brookings Institution. Berlin's editor, Henry Hardy, had prepared the essays for collective publication and here recounts their history. In his foreword, Brookings president Strobe Talbott, an expert on the Soviet Union, relates the essays to Berlin's other work. The Soviet Mind will assume its rightful place among Berlin's works and will prove invaluable for policymakers, students, and those interested in Russian politics, past, present and future.

    Abstract: This edited book draws from work that focuses on the act of telling family stories, as well as their content and structure. The process of telling family stories is linked to central aspects of development, including language acquisition, affect regulation, and family interaction patterns. This book extends across traditional developmental psychology, personality theory, and family studies. Drawing broadly on the epigenetic framework for individual development articulated by Erik Erikson, as well as on conceptions of the family life cycle, the editors bring together contemporary examples of psychological research on family stories and their implications for development and change at different points in the life course. The book is divided into sections that focus on family stories at different points in the life cycle, from early childhood and the beginnings of narrative skill, through adolescence, young adulthood, midlife, and then mature adulthood and its intergenerational meaning. During each of these periods of the life cycle, research focusing on individual development within an Eriksonian framework of ego strengths and virtues is highlighted. The dynamic role of family stories is also featured here, with work exploring the links between family process, intergenerational attachment, and storytelling.     Note: Konsum beschränkt sich nicht bloß auf den Verbrauch von Gütern, sondern enthält auch eine symbolische Dimension: Die Erwartungen, Bedeutungen und Botschaften, die zwischen den Instanzen der Werbung und des Konsums zirkulieren. Dabei kommt der Werbung keineswegs, wie in älteren Ansätzen, ausschließlich der aktive Part zu. Vielmehr produziert und rezipiert die Werbung gleichermaßen, wie auch die Konsumenten aktiv an der Rezeption und Produktion von Sinn beteiligt sind. So bedient sich die Werbung via Marktforschung gerade jener Sinnpartikel, wie sie von den Konsumenten ständig hergestellt werden, und umgekehrt wird die Sinnproduktion der Konsumenten insbesondere durch Kreativwerbung auf vielfältige Weise angeregt und in Gang gesetzt. Der Band schlägt ein Kreislauf-Modell vor, mit dessen Hilfe die Produktion und Rezeption von Erwartungen, Bedeutungen und Botschaften zwischen allen Instanzen dieses Feldes ohne dominante Zielrichtung beschrieben werden kann. Die einzelnen Beiträge thematisieren jeweils Ausschnitte dieses Kreislaufmodells

    Abstract: This volume inserts the place of the local in theorizing about language policies and practices in applied linguistics. While the effects of globalization around the world are being discussed in such diverse circles as corporations, law firms, and education, and while the spread of English has come to largely benefit those in positions of power, relatively little has been said about the impact of globalization at the local level, directly or indirectly. Reclaiming the Local in Language Policy and Practice is unique in focusing specifically on the outcomes of globalization in and among the communities affected by these changes. The authors make a case for why it is important for local social practices, communicative conventions, linguistic realities, and knowledge paradigms to actively inform language policies and practices for classrooms and communities in specific contexts, and to critically inform those pertaining to other communities. Engaging with the dominant paradigms in the discipline of applied linguistics, the chapters include research relating to second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, literacy, and language planning. The majority of chapters are case studies of specific contexts and communities, focused on situations of language teaching. Beyond their local contexts these studies are important for initiating discussion of their relevance for other, different communities and contexts. Taken together, the chapters in this book approach the task of reclaiming and making space for the local by means of negotiating with the present and the global. They illuminate the paradox that the local contains complex values of diversity, multilingualism, and plurality that can help to reconceive the multilingual society and education for postmodern times.

    Abstract: Genetic Databases offers a timely analysis of the underlying tensions, contradictions and limitations of the current regulatory frameworks for, and policy debates about, genetic databases. Drawing on original empirical research and theoretical debates in the fields of sociology, anthropology and legal studies, the contributors to this book challenge the prevailing orthodoxy of informed consent and explore the relationship between personal privacy and the public good.
