    Abstract: What does it mean to be authentic? How is authenticity indexed in contexts of language expression? Authenticity is considered a driving force of individuals’ behaviour and is evaluated according to cultural contexts and mediated by and expressed in language. This volume examines the meanings of linguistic authenticity and problematises the authentic speaker as reflecting a complex and dynamic deployment of sociolinguistic and pragmatic resources.     Abstract: The concept of authenticity has received some attention in recent academic discourse, yet it has often been left under-defined from a sociolinguistic perspective. This volume presents the contributions of a wide range of scholars who exchanged their views on the topic at a conference in Freiburg, Germany, in November 2011. The authors address three leading questions: What are the local meanings of authenticity embedded in large cultural and social structures? What is the meaning of linguistic authenticity in delocalised and/or deterritorialised settings? How is authenticity indexed in other contexts of language expression (e.g. in writing or in political discourse)? These questions are tackled by recognised experts in the fields of sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, and contact linguistics. While by no means exhaustive, the volume offers a large array of case studies that contribute significantly to our understanding of the meaning of authenticity in language production and perception.

Using the example of the German sign language (DGS), this book examines if this assumption is justified or merely attributable to the constraints of the auditory medium. The grammar and syntax of DGS suggest that iconicity is at least as important as arbitrariness, which is why the former should be reflected more strongly in linguistic theory.     Abstract: Wiederholt ist die Forderung laut geworden, Sprache in ihrer Materialität und Performativität als ein Medium zu begreifen. Das Buch legt in diesem Sinn eine systematische Begründung einer Medientheorie der Verständigung vor, die Sprache als kulturelle Praxis der Verständigung denkt. Im Zentrum des Beitrags steht die Auseinandersetzung mit den Arbeiten des französischen Philosophen Jacques Derrida, der sich wie kaum ein anderer demZusammenhang von Sprache und Medialität gewidmet hat. Von daher entwickelt eine Medientheorie der Verständigung den Ausgangspunkt für eine linguistische Kulturforschung, der somit eine neue Relevanz innerhalb der gegenwärtigen kulturwissenschaftlichen Debatte zukommt. Zentrale Themen einer solchen Linguistik sind die ästhetische Dimension des Verständigungsgeschehens, die Weiterentwicklung einer linguistischen Diversitätsforschung angesichts pluraler und heterogener Gesellschaften sowie die Untersuchung des komplexen Zusammenhangs von medienkulturellem Gedächtnis und Wissensvermittlung.

    Abstract: The graphic design of texts has become a linguistic object in its own right. To date, however, it has rarely been considered from a sociolinguistic perspective. The present volume attempts to fill this gap by offering the first comprehensive sociolinguistic theory of visual communication. It shows how "meaning" is generated through graphic variation, based on collective communicative knowledge and social attribution processes

Insbesondere die »Kleinen Fächer« werden sich angesichts dessen nur behaupten können, wenn sie sich innovativen kulturwissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen öffnen, die die gegenwärtigen globalen Zustände kritisch zu durchdringen vermögen.     Abstract: Sowohl der Begriff als auch die Vorstellung von »Kultur« verändern sich aktuell radikal. Intellektuelle aus allen Disziplinen sind damit befasst, eine Neubestimmung und -positionierung von »Kultur« vorzunehmen. Im Zeitalter von Globalisierung und Migration ist die Vorstellung von einer zugleich an ein Volk, eine Nation und an einen spezifischen Ort gebundenen Kultur im Herder'schen Sinne offenbar obsolet geworden. Man versucht vielmehr, die Fluidität, die Dynamik und die Grenzüberschreitungen zwischen Kulturen zu begreifen. Die Beiträge in diesem Band zeigen, dass das Konzept der Transkulturalität, welches zunehmend sowohl die Interkulturalitäts-Studien als auch die Postcolonial Studies als kulturwissenschaftliches Paradigma ablöst, hierfür einen methodischen Ansatzpunkt bietet.

    Abstract: What is the role of language in human cognition? Could we attain self-consciousness and construct our civilisation without language? Such were the questions at the basis of eighteenth-century debates on the joint evolution of language, mind, and culture. 'Language and Enlightenment' highlights the importance of language in the social theory, epistemology, and aesthetics of the Enlightenment. While focusing on the Berlin Academy under Frederick the Great, Avi Lifschitz situates the Berlin debates within a larger temporal and geographical framework. He argues that awareness of the historicity and linguistic rootedness of all forms of life was a mainstream Enlightenment notion rather than a feature of the so-called 'Counter-Enlightenment'. Enlightenment authors of different persuasions investigated whether speechless human beings could have developed their language and society on their own. Such inquiries usually pondered the difficult shift from natural signs like cries and gestures to the artificial, articulate words of human language

Im Mittelpunkt steht die Analyse der sprachpolitischen Interaktion zwischen dem Europarat, den Ratifizierungsstaaten und den Nichtregierungsorganisationen als Repräsentanten der Minderheitensprachen. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt dem Monitoringprozess, d.h. den Berichtszyklen, in denen die in Szene gesetzte Selbstdarstellung der Staaten mit den politischen, gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Ansprüchen von Minderheiten konfrontiert werden, und dies unter den Augen europäischer Experten und Entscheidungsträger, die auf diese Weise zu Schiedsrichtern sprachnationaler Kontroversen avancieren. Die Autoren des Handbuchs liefern einen Beitrag zum Verständnis, aber auch zur Bewertung der gegenwärtigen europäischen Sprachkonflikte und deren politischer Lösungsmöglichkeiten. Die Beiträge sind alphabetisch nach den Mitgliedsstaaten geordnet und in ihrer Binnenstruktur nach einem einheitlichen Konzept gegliedert. So eignet sich das Handbuch insbesondere auch als Nachschlagewerk.
