    Abstract: Seit 1955 erheben die Macherinnen und Macher der documenta den Anspruch, Einblick in die aktuellen künstlerischen Tendenzen zu liefern und den aktuellen Zeitgeist zu dokumentieren. Die Publikation stellt die Geschichte der documenta in den Kontext der politischen, kultur- und gesellschaftsgeschichtlichen Entwicklung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts und setzt so Kunst und Geschichte in ein sich wechselseitig bedingendes Verhältnis. Immer wieder war die internationale Großausstellung ein Ort, an dem das westdeutsche Selbstverständnis verhandelt wurde. Progressive und regressive politische Tendenzen standen dabei von Anfang an nebeneinander. „Die einzelnen Essays wechseln sich mit Bildstrecken der Exponate und knappen Kommentaren ab. So ist trotz aller hier geäußerter inhaltlicher Kritik eine handliche und ansprechende Dokumentation zur Geschichte der documenta zwischen 1955 und 1997 entstanden, die den aktuellen Wissenstand präsentiert.     Abstract: All across the Americas, from the 16th century onwards, enslaved Africans escaped their captors and struck out on their own. These runaways, having found their freedom, established their own communities or joined with indigenous peoples to forge new identities. Cimarron, borrowing a Spanish-American term for these fugitive former slaves, is a new series of photographic portraits of their descendants. From Brazil, Colombia, the Caribbean islands and Central America, as far as the southern United States, elaborate masquerades are staged that celebrate and keep alive the history and memory of African slaves and their creole or mixed-race descendants. Stock characters are portrayed in costume, or in grotesque or satirical representations. A huge variety of African tribal dress, wild ritual regalia and shimmering Mardi Gras outfits feature in breathtaking succession. Vividly coloured silks and cottons combine with woven fibres, leaves, feathers, and bodypaint; props include emblems of slavery and slavemasters - ropes, sticks, guns and machetes. These photographs record real people whose collective sense of memory, folk history and imagination dramatically challenges our expectations. Charles Freger's work has established a large and growing following among connoisseurs of contemporary photography, defining a new genre of documentary portraiture that extends and deepens our sense of the human past and the present

    Abstract: Das Begleitbuch zur Ausstellung im Kunstpalast Düsseldorf (8. März bis 10. Juni 2019) hat den massgeblichen Beitrag von Frauen zur Kriegsfotografie zum Thema. Entgegen der weitläufigen Vorstellung, die Kriegsfotografie sei ein von Männern dominiertes Berufsfeld, gibt es eine lange Tradition von in Kriegsgebieten tätigen Fotografinnen. Sie haben mit derselben Selbstverständlichkeit wie ihre männlichen Kollegen weltweite Krisen dokumentiert und unser Bild vom Krieg massgeblich mitgeprägt. Die Publikation präsentiert rund 120 Arbeiten von acht Fotografinnen aus den letzten 80 Jahren. Unter den Aufnahmen finden sich intime Einblicke in den Kriegsalltag und Zeugnisse erschütternder Gräueltaten ebenso wie Hinweise auf die Absurdität des Krieges und seiner Konsequenzen. (Verlagstext)

Between 1886 and 1903, Booth's team of social investigators interviewed Londoners from all walks of life, recording their comments, together with their own unrestrained remarks and statistical information, in 450 notebooks. Their findings formed the basis of Booth's colour-coded social mapping (from vicious and semi-criminal to wealthy) and his Inquiry into the Life and Labour of the People of London. 0Organized into 12 geographical sections, 'Charles Booth's London Poverty Maps' presents the meticulously hand-coloured preparatory and final printed social mapping of London.     Abstract: In 1949 the photographer and co-founder of Magnum Photos, George Rodger, learned of the Nuba tribe while traveling in the Kordofan region of the Sudan. Remarkably, he was granted permission by the Sudanese government to take pictures of these striking people, who lived as their ancestors had centuries before. After publication in National Geographic magazine, these pictures--as well as Rodger's fascinating journal entries from the shoot--have not been available to the wider public. Now, Rodger's rare softly colored Kodachrome images are gathered in a sumptuous volume, and introduced in an essay by photographer Chris Steele-Perkins. Beautifully reproduced, Rodger's photographs emphasize the muted colors of the Sudanese landscape as well as the Nuba's penchant for vivid body paint, clothing, and jewelry. They are a superb example of early color photography, and a stunning celebration of a little-known tribe that lives in one of the world's harshest environments

    Abstract: In the past, writers and critics such as Goethe, Ruskin, and Clement Greenberg perpetuated particular ideas about art and even dictated these ideas to the artists themselves. Today, artists no longer have to follow one prevailing theory and the art world is less centralized in particular cities: New York, London, Paris, Berlin, and Beijing all offer rich environments to artists but none are designated as the exclusive center of the art world. In this book, Alistair Hicks demonstrates his belief that no single curator, critic, or dealer should monopolize our view of what is happening in the art world today, but that by listening to the artists themselves, we can gradually make out an ever-evolving web of patterns, relationships, and themes. Organized by continent and including extracts from interviews with artists from around the world, the book offers a fresh view of the contemporary art world through artists from France, Albania, Slovakia, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, The United States, China, India, and beyond. The range of artists whose work is explored includes Laure Prouvost, Anri Sala, Roman Ondák, Gabriel Orozco, Sandra Gamarra, Cai Guo-Qiang, and Nandan Ghiya, among many others
