    Abstract: This book provides new and established researchers with innovative methodologies and research strategies to explore European security integration from a different perspective, challenging traditional theoretical interpretations. It takes a step back from well-established theoretical approaches to the European Union’s (EU) Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) to ask more fundamental questions about the core assumptions underpinning research on European security integration. It supports methodological innovations with an analysis of the most significant empirical problems of European security governance, including the war in Ukraine or the role of Russia in European security. In the last chapter, the author offers ideas for new pedagogical approaches to teaching European Studies. Kamil Zwolski is Associate Professor in International Politics at the University of Southampton, UK, and Jean Monnet Chair of European Security Governance. His research interests include the theory and practice of European security and its governance, Europe-Russia relations and the role of the EU/NATO in European security. His previous book, European Security in Integration Theory (2018), examines federalism and functionalism – two fundamentals, yet largely forgotten, theories of international integration, in the context of the war in Ukraine and contemporary European security order.

    Abstract: This book discusses the emerging threats to European stability in different borderland regions, from the Greater Middle East to the Eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans and the Black Sea. It highlights the specific geopolitical risks that could, left unchecked, have global repercussions. The book shows how recent events have exasperated underlying problems that have been slowly destabilizing each of these regions for years. It also looks at the geopolitical constraints and objectives of the countries within these regions to build a basis for understanding their current and future security challenges. While doing so, the book discusses the European borderlands in a non-traditional way, proposing a specific framework to study them, going beyond historical analysis and employing a heuristic process and in-depth socio-economic analysis to understand regional power relations and trends. It develops the key concepts of "core borderland" and "geopolitical node" to understand the future challenges that Europe in particular and Eurasia, in general, will face, discussing specific features shaping current affairs and identifying the main drivers - countries and specific regional elements - for the future stability of the borderlands. This book will appeal to students and scholars of international relations, as well as policy-makers, practitioners, and international organizations interested in a better understanding of current and future challenges at Europe's borderlands and the security risks the European continent faces.

    Abstract: Die Covid-19-Pandemie fordert die europäische Idee heraus: Denn nicht nur die EU-Außengrenzen, sondern auch Binnengrenzen innerhalb des Schengen-Raums wurden ab Frühjahr 2020 wieder verstärkt kontrolliert, durch an deren Überquerung anknüpfende Quarantäne- und Test-Vorschriften zum Hindernis oder auch zeitweise ganz geschlossen. Damit sind die geographischen Grenzverläufe für Berufspendelnde, für Ausflügler:innen oder für Einkaufende wieder ,real‘. Doch reichen die Auswirkungen über Transit, Tourismus und Handel weit hinaus: Mit den verstärkten Kontrollen, Quarantänepflichten und Schließungen verändert sich auch die Wirkung der territorialen Grenz(ziehung)en.     Abstract: This book deals with the economic impact of technological changes and the rise of passenger shipping on social relations on board and ashore in European shipping industries between c.1850 and 2000. The changes in motive power, communication techniques and positioning technologies and the rise of passenger shipping went together with the creation of new tasks and functions and the marginalization or disappearance of traditional jobs and skills. This book presents case-studies on changes in different maritime professions between the middle of the nineteenth century and the end of the twentieth century, covering the shipping industries of a variety of seafaring countries in Europe. The subjects include changes in maritime labour at large, changes in specific groups of deck, catering or engine room personnel, such as captains, cooks, catering personnel, engineers, or radio-operators. A number of chapters employ a prosopographical or micro-historical approach, while others apply a spatial perspective, analyze business records, materials from professional associations or distil information from large sets of quantitative data. This book will be of interest to academics and students of economic history, maritime and labour history. Karel Davids is Professor Emeritus of Economic and Social History at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He has published and taught on economic and social history, maritime history, the history of technology and global history. Joost Schokkenbroek has been Executive Director of the Vancouver Maritime Museum since July 2017. Prior to this he was affiliated with The Kendall Whaling Museum in the USA (1988-1990) and Het Scheepvaartmuseum (The Dutch National Maritime Museum) in Amsterdam (1991-2017), where he worked as Chief Curator, in combination with a Professorship of Maritime History and Maritime Heritage at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. .

    Abstract: This book examines similarities and differences in 31 European governments’ responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic hit Europe in early 2020. It spread across the continent during the Spring while anxious electorates were treated to news reports about health systems under duress and frustrated attempts by public procurement officials to obtain adequate supplies of medical and protective equipment. Over the next 15–18 months considered by this book, national responses exhibited both similarities and profound variations as the different endeavours to regulate social interactions constituted a stress test for political systems across Europe. Mads Dagnis Jensen is Associate Professor at the Department of International Economics, Government, and Business at Copenhagen Business School, Denmark. Theoretically innovative and empirically rich, it is an important contribution to the study of both social memory and contemporary European politics." --Professor Duncan Bell, University of Cambridge, UK This book discusses a number of ways in which the dialogue about Europe’s past and future could be rendered more inclusive, such as the promotion of critical and sentimental education and the creation of virtual and actual social spaces in which citizens and organised identity groups can participate. The discussion about European memory is far from being a “merely” symbolic issue with no political consequences. Imagining Europe and its past in different ways will lead to different real political outcomes. For instance, thinking about European integration as an embodiment of the values of the Enlightenment (such as human rights, liberal democracy, and reason), as a guarantor of peace on the continent, as a guarantor of prosperity, or as a guarantor that massive human rights violations like genocide will “never again” be committed on its soil, all entail different political objectives. Similarly, conflicting understandings of European memory as either a thing or a social construct, as either one memory or a plurality of memories, as either the end point of deliberation or a dialogical process, represent not merely inconsequential cultural “froth on the tides of society,” but crucially important issues with real political consequences. The book is intended to contribute to this discussion about the common European approach to the past (and thus to the future). Mano Toth is Visiting Lecturer at the Central European University, Austria. He earned his PhD from the University of Cambridge, UK, and specialises in European memory politics. His work has been previously published in Millennium, the Journal of Common Market Studies, and Memory Studies.

    Abstract: The book is an edited collection of contributions by a distinguished international panel of academics on the main scientific, juridical, and economic aspects involved in the mitigation and adaptation processes imposed by climate change. Explicitly interdisciplinary, the book transversally cuts through different disciplines offering an outline of a phenomenon that is too often left to specific and sectorial insights. The volume is divided into four parts. The first part introduces the main concepts of the book: climate change and sustainability, wellbeing, and mitigation and adaptation. The second part presents the scientific understanding of climate change and explores some of the more pressing issues driving policy development, such as the melting of the glaciers and the impact on coastal areas. The third part discusses significant experiences in the environmental policies both in the European Union and in the United States of America. The last section explains possible approaches to climate change, by exploring the legal and economic aspects of both adversarial and more lenient approaches towards a more sustainable world. It faces four main issues in the economic and juridical context: consumer behaviors, climate litigations, environmental litigations and the alternative forms of dispute resolution on environmental matters, with particular regard to environmental mediation. Offering a new vision of sustainable policies, this volume will be of interest to researchers and students of environmental policy, resource economics, environmental law, sustainable development, and public administration, as well as practitioners and policy makers working in related areas.

Taking a long-run perspective over more than 150 years, this book shows the development and the distribution of human capital in the regions of Europe and its connections with the economy. It provides insights into recent research findings in this area, including theoretical advances and the use of new empirical data.

    Abstract: This book focuses on the recovery and new normal in a post-Covid scenario, drawing important lessons from the pandemic and proposing new ideas for sustainable development, endogenous dynamism, and inclusive growth. The book presents different ideas and perspectives about the present and the future, reflecting on four main fields of our economic reality: macroeconomics, governments, technology, and society. It discusses important topics for future economic scenarios, beginning with an estimation of the economic consequences of the absence of an equitable distribution of vaccines. Further topics discussed include the government’s debts sustainability, the probability of an inflation/deflation or of a stagflation scenario, as well as the impact of US and European economic policies on economic growth.     Abstract: This two-volume book examines the most important global problem—the recovery of the social-economic crises due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This economic crisis has its own basis and differs from others by the lockdown of most businesses on the decision of authorities. The uncertainty of the future economic revival obliges scientists around the world to unite in search of effective solutions that will become the basis for prosperity and human wellbeing. The death of millions of people around the world, several waves of coronavirus, and a global pandemic have forced most states to seek extraordinary measures to save people and revive economic activity. The world economy experienced a global shock, probably never experienced before due to lockdowns. The disruptions and gaps in the value chains were primarily caused by the lockdowns of enterprises. The change in the essence of the economic crisis has raised the question of how to overcome it and revive economic activity. The crisis caused a sharp decline in incomes of the population around the world, which led to social upheavals. Post-COVID economic revival in a globalized world has become the most important problem of our time.     Abstract: The aim of this open access book is to take stock of, critically engage, and celebrate feminist IR scholarship produced in Europe. Organized thematically, the volume highlights a wealth of excellent scholarship, while also focusing on the politics of location and the international political economy of feminist knowledge production. Who are some of the central feminist scholars located in Europe? How might the concentration of these scholars in Northern Europe and the UK shape the contents of their scholarship? What have some of the main contributions been, in the study of the following themes: security; war and military; peace; migration; international political economy and development; foreign policy; diplomacy; and global governance and international organizations? The volume offers both an intellectual history and a sociology of feminist IR scholarship in Europe. It showcases the vitality and breadth of feminist IR traditions, while simultaneously calling attention to their partial nature, exclusions and silences. Maria Stern is Professor in Peace and Development Studies at the School of Global Studies (SGS), Gothenburg University, Sweden. Ann Towns is Professor in Political Science at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, Director of the GenDip program on Gender and Diplomacy, and a Wallenberg Academy Fellow.

    Abstract: This open access collection is devoted to an in-depth, qualitative analysis of practices of cross-national solidarity in response to the current political and social crises, from citizens’ initiatives to networks of cooperation among civil society actors. The book analyses existing informal groups at the grassroots, furthering transnational solidarity in three thematic areas: disability, unemployment and immigration. Contributions assess how civic groups respond to the various crises affecting Europe, especially the economic and refugee crises, presenting new findings from a systematic comparative study conducted in eight European countries (Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, and the UK).     Abstract: This book explores how Europe is seeking to enlarge its launching capacities by building additional spaceports on the European continent. Various national initiatives are envisaged resulting in a “space race” in the field of constructing spaceports and building micro launchers. However, right from the beginning when choosing the launch site (land or sea based-rocket launches) there are various factors relating to international space law, European regulations and national rules that must be considered, as spaceports are rarely explicitly addressed in current legal and policy frameworks. While launching sites used to be operated by governments, private commercial initiatives are increasingly entering the field. This paradigm shift must be reflected within regulations relating to various aspects of space liability by enlarging the long-established terms of the United Nations space treaties to accommodate commercial space flights. Questions of permission, supervision and control require special liability regulations to avoid detrimental consequences stemming from the concept of “launching states” in view of the rise of private driven commercial space activities on a global level. Furthermore, not only do environmental aspects need to be thoroughly examined but also the concept of critical infrastructure requires special attention from a security perspective to anticipate, inter alia, cyber-attacks. For these reasons, several European and national regulations may need to be enlarged to apply to the entire space sector, using a harmonized approach that has direct implications for the regulations, programmes, and missions of the European Union and the European Space Agency, bearing in mind that the upcoming spaceports in Europe are an essential asset to substantially boost the European New Space.

    Abstract: Das Erdöl ist der Lebenssaft der industriellen Gesellschaften und zugleich der am meisten politisierte Rohstoff. Europa hat sich in der Vergangenheit in eine gefährliche Abhängigkeit von Ölimporten manövriert. Die vorliegende Studie geht der Frage nach, wie es seit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert zu Europas Ölsucht gekommen ist und wie sich die Interdependenzbeziehungen zwischen den erdölexportierenden Staaten und den europäischen Einfuhrländern im Zeitverlauf verändert haben. Die Entwicklung der internationalen Ölindustrie und des europäischen Erdölverbrauchs wird dabei in einer historischen Längsschnittanalyse als pfadabhängiger Prozess nachgezeichnet und anhand eines polit-ökonomischen Untersuchungsmodells durchleuchtet. Mit dem Verlust der Kontrollmacht durch die OPEC hat die „Ölwaffe“ als wirkungsvolles außenpolitisches Instrument ausgedient. Europas Versorgungssicherheit mit Erdöl hat in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten deutlich zugenommen. Der Autor Alexander Smith ist promovierter Wirtschaftswissenschaftler und diplomierter Politikwissenschaftler. Vor seiner Tätigkeit in der Finanzwirtschaft hat er am Austrian Marshall Plan Center for European Studies geforscht und am Department of History der University of New Orleans zur Erdölgeschichte gelehrt.

    Abstract: Martina Schöfbeck befasst sich mit den Ursachen der Entstehung von Integrationsskepsis in Parteien innerhalb von Transformationsländern. Die theoretische Studie fokussiert den strukturellen Nährboden für Integrationsskepsis ebenso wie die strategisch-kalkulatorischen Anreize für Parteien, den integrationsskeptischen Konflikt bewusst zu mobilisieren, und wirft dabei ein besonderes Augenmerk auf transformatorische Rahmenspezifika. Ausgehend von der europäischen Forschung erarbeitet die Autorin mittels Konfliktlinien-, Transformations- und Rational-Choice-Theorien ein theoretisches Framework, welches Determinanten auf Makro-, Meso- und Mikroebene sowie deren wechselseitige Verschränkung identifiziert, um die Genese parteilicher Integrationsskepsis in Transformationsländern - auch über Europa hinaus - zu erklären.     Abstract: Die mit 1990 gehegten Hoffnungen auf einen liberalen Frieden haben sich nicht erfüllt. Nicht nur, dass Krieg in Europa wieder zu einem Mittel der Außenpolitik geworden ist, scheint auch die Geopolitik wieder zurückgekehrt. Zudem sind die Konflikte im Nahen und Mittleren Osten nach wie vor ungelöst. Es fehlen Erfolg versprechende Strategien, dem Islamischen Staat zu begegnen oder den Krieg in Syrien zu befrieden. Auch stehen der bewaffnete Konflikt in der Ukraine, die eskalierenden militärischen Spannungen zwischen Russland und dem Westen sowie die Entfremdung zur Türkei für das Scheitern einer Strategie, Frieden in Europa durch Transformation nach westlichem Vorbild zu schaffen. Welche Sicherheitssysteme können angesichts dieser Situation greifen und sich als friedensfähig erweisen?     Abstract: Simone Larisch liefert die erste zusammenfassende Darstellung von Ausstellungsformaten, die temporär zeitgenössische bildende Kunst im privaten Wohnraum zeigen. Analysiert werden neben den Konzepten und Strategien der privaten Kunstvermittler auch Motive von Gastgebern, Ausstellungsmachern, Künstlern und Besuchern. Die Untersuchung aktueller Fallbeispiele und der Vorgängerprojekte heutiger Ausstellungen im privaten Wohnraum, also der „Urväter“, „Prototypen“ und „nahen Verwandten“, führt im Ergebnis nicht nur zu Erkenntnissen über diese Ausstellungssparte, sondern auch zu vielen erstaunlichen Kunstgeschichten.     Abstract: Tanja Wolf entwickelt eine Typologie zur Unterscheidung rechtsextremer und rechtspopulistischer Parteien in Europa. Diese basiert auf einer systematischen Herleitung der Unterscheidungsmerkmale. Hierfür werden nicht nur die gängigsten Definitionen extremer Parteienformen beleuchtet, sondern auch verschiedene Theorien und die zentralen Charakteristika der beiden Parteitypen. Die bereits existierenden Definitionen werden anhand dieser Charakteristika und grundlegender Wissenschaftstheorie weiterentwickelt, um aus ihnen adäquate Unterscheidungskriterien ableiten zu können. Die Angemessenheit der Typologie wird anschließend mittels Sekundäranalyse anhand von elf Fallbeispielen aus allen Regionen Europas überprüft.     Abstract: Histoire et anthropologie des ensembles populaires de violons en Europe.00Les fortes ressemblances entre anciens ensembles ménétriers de violons et actuelles bandes de violons ? tsiganes ? d?Europe centrale, autorisent l?hypothèse des transferts culturels.00Les Tsiganes étant présents en Europe depuis le xve siècle, les processus de mise en contact entre eux et les populations locales (Gadjé) sont multiples : circulations humaines de toutes sortes, cadre répressif et carcéral associé au vagabondage, fréquentation, par les Tsiganes, des nobles, des cours, de l?espace économique et performatif de la foire, des milieux du théâtre itinérant. Par ailleurs, au xviie siècle, les bandes de violons ? surtout françaises ? ont essaimé dans toute l?Europe, notamment centrale.
    Abstract: De ce fait, les actuelles bandes de violons européennes, témoignant de l?histoire migratoire tsigane, des échanges entre Tsiganes et Gadjé et entre Européens eux-mêmes, constituent une mémoire interculturelle de l?Europe.00Si l?itinérance, l?oralité, la périphérie sociale et culturelle, la dilution du ?Bohémien? dans le ?vagabond? complexifient le traitement d?une telle recherche en raison de la raréfaction des sources directes, l?un des objectifs de cet ouvrage est de révéler le dynamisme et le mouvement des sociétés européennes anciennes, l?extrême complexité de leur fonctionnement musical, l?enchevêtrement de leurs réalités sociales, économiques, politiques, culturelles.

    Abstract: This book provides an insightful analysis of the looming refugee and mixed migration crisis in the context of four major, contemporary flows: two in west and east Europe, and one each in the Americas and Asia. The analysis, in each case, is followed by a judicious identification of the key issues involved and the presentation of a set of proposed policy responses to them. The discussion is then placed in a global setting and dovetailed with the recently launched United Nations initiative to adopt global compacts on refugees and migrants. The author brings to this book, the first of its kind, his vast experience of advising, and actively engaging with, many of the principal international organisations concerned with refugee and migration issues.     Abstract: Katharina Sophia Burlafinger geht der Frage nach, was europäische Stiftungen erreichen können, um den Einfluss der Europäischen Union auf ihre Nachbarschaft zu erhöhen. Dazu analysiert die Autorin die Lebens- und Gedankenwelt zivilgesellschaftlicher Aktivisten in der Mittelost-Nordafrika-Region. Dieser Perspektivwechsel auf die Graswurzelebene ermöglicht besonders authentische Daten und Einblicke in ein bisher unterbelichtetes Themenfeld. Die Analyse zeigt deutlich Probleme, aber auch Fortschritte in der europäischen Demokratieförderung auf und kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass konventionelle Instrumente zum Regel- und Normentransfer in der Zukunft stärker durch weiche Instrumente wie die der Stiftungen ergänzt werden sollten.     Abstract: Christiana Gransow untersucht anhand von zehn Rundfunksystemen die Implementierungen des Public-Value-Tests. Der Vergleich zeigt, sobald ein Regulierungsmechanismus besteht, der die Angebote der öffentlichen Medienanbieter auf deren Beitrag zur Erbringung des gesetzlichen Auftrags untersucht, wird der Umfang des gesetzlichen Auftrags im Hinblick auf die Onlineangebote und -aktivitäten bewusst weit vom Gesetzgeber gefasst. Die qualitative Untersuchung legt offen, dass lediglich 8 der analysierten Mediensysteme eine Form des Ex-ante-Tests umsetzten und wiederum nur 6 Fallbeispiele das Prüfverfahren anwandten, die allerdings nicht frei von Mängeln sind. Nicht nur das Ausführen erweist sich als schwierig, sondern auch das Bestimmen des Schlüsselbegriffs Public Value stellt eine Herausforderung dar. Entlang von institutionellen sowie organisatorischen Kriterien formuliert die Autorin ein Vergleichsmodell der einzelnen Public Value-Tests.     Abstract: This book explores the roles of religion in the current refugee crisis of Europe.     Abstract: "This volume explores the specificity of the urban culture in western Europe during the period c. 1150-1550. Since the mid-twentieth century, many studies have complicated the association, traditionally made, between the medieval growth of towns and the birth of a modern, secular world; but few have given any attention to what actually made urban culture 'urban'. This volume begins by placing medieval 'urban culture' within its spatial context, to consider how urban conditions determined the perception and representation of the city-dweller. Contributors examine a variety of urban cultures, from the political to the artistic, from London and Bruges to Florence and Venice, and beyond Europe. They show how urban culture involved a process of interaction with other discourses (royal, noble, ecclesiastical) and that it was not monolithic: the relationship between urban environments and the cultures they generated were hybrid, fluid and dynamic."--Back cover
