Abstract: This book offers the first methodological synthesis of digital food studies. It brings together contributions from leading scholars in food and media studies and explores research methods from textual analysis to digital ethnography and action research. In recent times, digital media has transformed our relationship with food which has become one of the central topics in digital and social media. This spatiotemporal shift in food cultures has led us to reimagine how we engage in different practices related to food as consumers. The book examines the opportunities and challenges that the new digital era of food studies presents and what methodologies are employed to study the changed dynamics in this field. These methodologies provide insights into how restaurant reviews, celebrity webpages, the blogosphere and YouTube are explored, as well as how to analyse digital archives, digital soundscapes and digital food activism and a series of approaches to digital ethnography in food studies. The book presents straightforward ideas and suggestions for how to get started on one's own research in the field through well-structured chapters that include several pedagogical features. Written in an accessible style, the book will serve as a vital point of reference for both experienced researchers and beginners in the digital food studies field, health studies, leisure studies, anthropology, sociology, food sciences, and media and communication studies.

Note: Japan is heterogeneous and culturally diverse, both historically through ancient waves of immigration and in recent years due its foreign relations and internationalization. However, Japan has socially, culturally, politically and intellectually constructed a distinct and homogeneous identity. More recently, such an identity construction has been rightfully questioned and challenged by Japan's culturally diverse groups. This book explores the discursive systems of cultural identities that regenerate the illusion of Japan as a homogeneous nation. Contributors from a variety of disciplines and methodological approaches investigate the ways in which Japan's homogenizing discourses are challenged and modified by counter-homogeneous message systems. They examine the discursive push-and-pull between the homogenizing and heterogenizing vectors, found in domestic and transnational contexts and mobilized by various identity politics, such as gender, sexuality, ethnicity, foreign status, nationality, multiculturalism and internationalization. After offering a careful and critical analysis, the book calls for complicating Japan's homogenizing discourses in nuanced and contextual ways with an explicit goal of working towards a culturally diverse Japan.

Description / Table of Contents: With developments in media technologies creating new opportunities and challenges for social movements to emerge and mobilize, this book is a timely and necessary examination of how organized labour and workers movements are engaging with this shifting environment. Based on extensive empirical research into emerging migrant and low-wage workers movements and their media practices, this book takes a critical look at the nature of worker resistance to ever-growing global corporate power in a digital age. Situating trade unionism in historical context, the book considers other forms of worker organizations and unionism, including global unionism, social movement unionism, community unionism, and syndicalist unionism, all of which have become increasingly relevant in a digitized world-system. At a time when the labour movement is said to be in crisis, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in the state of the labour movement, the future of unions, and the possibilities for challenging corporate exploitation of workers today
Description / Table of Contents: «The book will be useful for students of trade union and labour movement studies, politics, activism and media studies.» (Mike Wayne, European Journal of Communication 31/6 2016)

Abstract: The revolution in media technologies and the political upheavals intertwined with them demand a new media ethics. Given the power of global media corporations and the high-speed electronics of media technologies worldwide, more and more people are either brought together through dialogue and communication technologies or assimilated by them into a dominant culture. In cultural conflict all over the world, people tend to emphasize absolute differences when they express themselves, and under conditions of censorship and oppression citizens are increasingly prone to violence. To take seriously dramatic technological changes in a complicated world of cultural diversity, media ethics does not simply need to be updated but moved forward in a new intercultural direction. The Ethics of Intercultural Communication presents a futuristic model for doing so

Description / Table of Contents: Language of Migration: Self- and Other-Representation of Korean Migrants in Germany analyzes a variety of genres that depict Korean migration in Germany - namely, newspaper articles, autobiographical narratives, and documentaries - and deconstructs the language of these texts to provide a more layered picture of the discursively constructed identities of this particular group. By applying methods of media analysis, Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), and postcolonial theory to the present intertextual and interdiscursive data, colonial discursive practices in Other-representations of Koreans in the German media and postcolonial forms of resistance in Self-representations of Koreans in autobiographical narratives in the German language are identified. In the past, research on migration and research on migrant literature were separate entities with little opportunity to cross. In this book, these two are brought together in order to examine both sides of the discursive coin
